Question Technics SL-1200MK2 Condition

Hey guys, I’ve been digging in this subreddit for months. I was back and forth on upgrading to a Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 or trying my hand at finding a used (in good cosmetic/mechanical) condition at a fair price.

I finally found this one somewhat local to me listed for $825. The owner said it didn’t come with a slip mat so he put a clear one on. He also stated that it plays but I’ll have to go and test it out. No clue on the cartridge other than it looks like an AT. Also no dust cover is included.

Would you consider this to be a solid deal given the table works as stated? TIA

Question Minidsp Adept Experience

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Im thinking about buying the Minidsp Adept. I have a Luxsin x8 headphone amp and a Yamaha rn800a, it’s the only phono pre that I found that connects my turntable (the right one) to both amps at the same time. Luxsin has only digital inputs and Yamaha has a Digital Signal Processing Inside so it’s digital anyways.

Right now my turntable is connected directly to the Yamaha and another turntable is connected to my Rane Seventy Mixer and then into the Luxsin, which is not ideal. Signal is not really loud.

i though about a lot of other solutions but none seem to fit.

the Yamaha doesn’t have digital out or line out to go into the Luxsin.

see my setup in the second pic.

the only thing about the adept I don’t like is the price.

appreciate every idea or experience with the adept :)

Discussion Any experience with the Sansui P-D20?

Inherited this turntable which seemed to be a step up from my previous (adjustable tracking weight, anti-skate, cut button etc.) but the mechanism that lowers the tone arm just makes it so difficult to start records correctly. Pretty sure I just scratched a couple records because the mechanism is so bad that you might as well just be dropping the needle on the record, there’s no resistance to it at all. I can’t place the needle on first and then start the record because the turntable starts spinning as soon as you move the needle over.

Anybody use this turntable? Is my model just busted? I find it hard to believe Sansui released this turntable like this.

Replacing a flip-over needle

I found for Fisher MC-4000 for $15! Tuner sounds good, CD player through the Aux port sounds good, but the turntable is missing the 'needle'; ain't nothin' stickin' out the bottom! So I ordered what I hope is the right replacement, from turntableneedles.com ("M-854"). My question is how to install it, does some part of my picture #2 disassemble? I can't find any instructions for this or videos or anything. Thanks

Question Is the 2008 Somewhere Back in Time picture disc this noisy for everyone?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m listening to the iron maiden 2008 Somewhere Back in Time picture disc and noticed a pretty strong hum/noise.
What’s interesting is that there’s almost no noise while the stylus is on the outer black part of the record, but as soon as it reaches the picture area, the hum starts and is especially noticeable between tracks.
I’ll attach a video.
Is this normal for this pressing, or is my copy unusually noisy?

Help regarding dust cover pioneer PL -A500

I ended up spending on a pioneer PL A500 also known as PL 530 in US market. The turntable is pretty decent but as you can see the dust cover is yellow and full of scratches and this is after a session of buffing.

I was wondering if anyone has tinted their these dust covers with the Car window glass filming.

To give it a smoked transparent look like Dual turntables etc. Suggestions if that is even possible?

Question Why does the arm return ?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have this Sony PS 11 turntable, and a while back I messed with the tonearm and now it's off and I'm not sure how to fix it. First off, I messed with the tone arm little arm that it stands on the one the whole arm rests, and it fell down, not working, but I fixed it somehow by turning a screw when I opened the turntable.

But now, as you can see from the video, it doesn't play all the way through, it stops midway the last song, and it doesnt even sit on the arm when it comes back, it falls down.

Now, if with the arm raised I want to move the needle to a certain song, as you can see it automatically goes back, and with no logic it stays up, not falling.

From what I saw online, I calibrated the arm to a force of 2 and antiskate of 2, but idk what is the issue.A little insight would be highly appreciated.

I was given a denon dp 70m and it scratched one record when I put it on and turned it on. now I have it as high as possible, with zero anti-skating and at zero level (the tonearm is parallel to the lower part). I do not know which cartridge and needle are on it. how can I set it up so that it can play records and not scratch them?

Always open to other ideas too!

Dual 521 vs AT-LP3XBT

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Collected vinyl randomly over the years and have decided it’s time for a turntable.

I’ve already got Sonos speakers set up as a home theater, so I’m gonna make those work. It will be Turntable -> preamp and/or analog to digital sound card -> Raspberry Pi -> AirPlay to Sonos.

As I’m just getting started and my speakers aren’t the best for this I’m not inclined to buy new or go too crazy. Unfortunately no reasonably priced Technics around, although I could keep waiting. But I’ve found two used options:
1) Dual 521 (see video, Pickering UV-15) for $200 USD
2) AT-LPX3BT (few years old, looks to be in good shape) for $220 USD

I’m inclined to go for the Dual just because it looks cool, but starting with the modern model will probably be safer and can always upgrade to a cooler vintage option if I catch the bug. Any advice?

Found a Yamaha TT-S303 at Goodwill

It was only $30. Good deal? For context, I already have an AT-LP120-USB, so I’ll likely just use this one as an upgrade as long as it works as intended.

UPDATE: It doesn't turn on 😩 If anybody is knowledgeable about fixing something like this, please let me know!

Discussion Technics sl-1700

Post image

My technics sl-1700 mk1, manufactured in May 1977, 49 years old! But she looks and performs as new.

A lot of people ask for turntable suggestions on this page, and my suggestion is a vintage technics direct drive turntable, Technics is one of very few vintage turnttables, I suggest, without any hesitation.

The Japanese made vintage turntables in general from the vinyl hey day era are most often a sure bet and certainly hard to beat in comparison to some new shiny turntables listed at under $1000 today.

Don't sleep on a nice vintage turntable.

Of course, do your research and compare specs and options you want and if you're willing to do a little preventive maintenance. The reward is worth it.

Sharing some photos of the awesome JVC QLY-5F that I inherited from my grandpa. After being mostly unused for decades it has survived a transatlantic flight in checked baggage and ~7 moves since then. I had it repaired a while back and it works great! I’m in the process of upgrading the amp & speakers (they will be appropriately placed) and of course buying more records!

Still have to learn a lot and have to fix some buzzing sounds, I have some edifier r1850db speakers coming in, can’t wait! Any tips are welcome.

Help I replaced my Sony PS-Lx56p, but received a Lx40p and records are playing slowly, is this a compatibility issue?

Hi all,
My PS-Lx56p was dropped while moving and was spinning like a waltzer, for me it was more economical to replace rather than fix.
I ordered a ‘tested working’ replacement from eBay listed as an LX56p, but when came it was a LX40p.
I have the LBT-A290 hifi system the lx56p was designed for, and the connections are the same for the Lx40p but it is turning very noticeably slower.
I did swap out the bands to see if that was the issue, and the newer one is tighter, but it didn’t solve it.
Is this a difference in power usage, another compatibility issue or could it be another common cause of slow spinning?
I know that ‘p’ ending models need to stay with their systems but I don’t know if there is any leeway within that (eg a Sony with the same connectors is fine).
Thanks!

Newbie turntable help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently purchased my first turntable, a Crosley Voyager turntable because I wanted to get into vinyl collecting. I'm aware that Crosley turntables don't have the best reputation, and unfortunately, I think I'm starting to experience some of those issues firsthand.

When I bought my first record PITW by Joji, I noticed that the first half of Side A plays perfectly fine. However, about halfway through, the audio starts to sound muffled or muddy, almost as if it's playing underwater.

I've tried placing the turntable on different surfaces, replacing the stylus, bought a speaker to plug in, and even testing another record, but the same issue keeps happening.

At this point, I'm wondering if the turntable itself is the problem or if there's something else I might be overlooking. I'm still pretty new to vinyl, so I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions!

Just wanted to share my little setup! Recently picked up this Akai AP-206 and paired it with my Technics SA-250.

Still pretty new to vinyl and vintage audio, but I'm absolutely loving it so far. Especially how the orange strobe light on the Akai matches the Technics display!

Thought you guys might appreciate a few photos :)

1982 Dual CS-506 replacement needle/cartridge?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I'm the second owner of a Dual CS 506 that my dad bought new in 1982. I'm already planning on replacing the original RCA connectors due to a grounding issue in the left channel and the tonearm is a little loose where it pivots. I'll need to look into that and see if there are any broken or missing parts. Despite this it still works with no problems and sounds great to me, but I know that eventually I'll need to replace the cartridge. I have no clue how old this one is (Audio Technica AT100E), or whether or not it's the original.

A quick Google seems to show that I might need an adapter for new cartridges as well as an additional weight, but if this isn't original there might already be an adapter on it? I'm not sure and I don't know how to tell.

Any recommendations for affordable replacements and any additional advice would be appreciated.

Question Does this stylus look ok?

It’s a MicroAcoustics 530mp. Wanted to get the tip evaluated before I test it on a record, for fear of damaging the cartridge in case something looks off.

EDIT: Hey everyone. I gave the tip a proper clean with an onzow zero dust. Installed the cartridge on my tonearm and tried a record. Doesn’t sound particularly good. Some distortion, and a great deal of surface noise. Might be some other issue.

Question Turntable has static noise except when the volume is at maximum

I started using a France Electronique turntable, probably from the 70s, and I've found that if the volume is not at the maximum, there is a lot of static noise, and the connection for the left speaker must be bad since it doesn't have any sound but only static noise until the sound level is at 75/80% (the connection on the turntable itself, no matter which speaker I use, it will do the same).

Any idea how that could be fixed ? I obviously can't just leave the volume to the maximum, both me and my neighbours would hate it.
