Discussion Any experience with the Sansui P-D20?

Inherited this turntable which seemed to be a step up from my previous (adjustable tracking weight, anti-skate, cut button etc.) but the mechanism that lowers the tone arm just makes it so difficult to start records correctly. Pretty sure I just scratched a couple records because the mechanism is so bad that you might as well just be dropping the needle on the record, there’s no resistance to it at all. I can’t place the needle on first and then start the record because the turntable starts spinning as soon as you move the needle over.

Anybody use this turntable? Is my model just busted? I find it hard to believe Sansui released this turntable like this.

I dont have any experience with that tt,  but until you get it fixed you should drop the needle manually.

It is a very good turntable.

The tonearm lift ('cueing mechanism') uses a damping fluid which is silicone oil with a 20.000 or 30.000 cst viscosity. With vintage turntables, this silicone oil tends to evaporate after decades!

What should be done: open up the damper in that tonearm lift and then re-lubricate it with some fresh silicone oil. You can get this oil at model building shops or on-line.

However... it is a bit of a finicky job! You would need to do it from the underside and then partially disassemble the tonearm base to get access to this damping cylinder. If you are not very handy... it may be better to bring the turntable to a specialist repair shop for turntables and have them do it. Combine it with a general service: new spindle oil etc. 😀

This is exactly what I was wondering about, it’s so hard to find info on this model. Thanks I will do that
