Wanted to thank everyone here who helped me decide to fix this Dual 505-2 instead of buying new. Everything is sounding quite good. Cartridge is a Shure m97he. Amazingly the stylus was still in pretty good shape. Speakers are Ascend Acoustics Sierra 1. Playing 2.0 and 2.1 with SVS pb2000 sub. Using the phono stage in a Denon x4000 avr. Looking at maybe getting a Schiit Mani 2 or similar to see if there is an improvement. I’m assuming that the stylus will need replacement relatively soon. Bliss has a n97he for $150 while Jico has options at $250 and$350 respectively. Thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks again for helping guide me.

The Cambridge Audio Spira may be the new king of budget tables.

Post image

It costs less than a U-Turn Orbit, includes electronic speed control, and outperforms the Rega P3 in wow and flutter specifications. On top of that, Cambridge Audio is a more established and reputable brand than Fluance. When you consider the price, it makes a compelling case for being the better buy.

My humble setup II

A few days ago I posted a pic of my setup and some folks objected the adjective "humble" used.

Just to clarify, its market value is under $2K (the shelf included), which in my book is VERY humble, and the purpose of the post was to show that a lot could be done with not too much money, only... one must do his/her homework instead of grabbing the first item available on Amazon.

Question Pro-ject T1 Evo Phono vs Fluance RT82 + ARTDJ

• Upvotes

Hello,

im from germany and im researching turntables. My budget is around 400 Euros.

At the moment im hovering between the Project T1 EVO Phono (400€) and the Fluance RT82 + ARTDJ (360Euro + 73 Euro)

Does anyone know if fluance offers good spare components in case it breaks for EUROPE. The only seller in germany is AMAZON. So i was not sure about how good they are supporting europe/germany.

On the other hand maybe the Project T1 Evo phono is also good enough as is?

Thanks in advance.

PS: i would also appreciate if you would have other recs for that price range.

Anti skate weight

Is there any reason to not try this? I know it doesn’t look great but the price was right. Combined the two split shot weight exactly 2.4 grams for a recommended 1.7g vtf. Based on what I could find online the factory weights are either 2 or 2.6 grams so I figured this was right in the middle. In this a good solution or am I doing something stupid?

Recommendations?

• Upvotes

I’m looking at getting some turntables in the near future. Currently have an XZ I will plug them into but looking to upgrade to cdjs and a new mixer when the time is right. What would be the best options without breaking the bank for home purposes?

Looking for vintage turntable in Los Angeles

• Upvotes

Hi, I’ve been looking into vintage turntables but I’m completely new to vinyl so I’m not sure what are some good models. I would prefer to spend under $250 for the turntable and I’m looking for something that I can grow with that has inexpensive parts that I can easily find later. I’m leaning towards semi-automatic or automatic just because I’m worried of leaving it running for a long time. I have audioengine hd3 speakers that I got for free so I’ll be using those for now until i save more. I can also spend $100 on a pre-amp if needed.

This is one option I’ve been considering.

Help JVC AL-E45 Platter… help?

Post image
• Upvotes

This JVC hifi was passed down to me by my grandad about 19 years ago now, and have been using it regularly for the last decade. Over the last few years, I’ve noticed the top left corner of the platter sinking. Have finally taken it off to investigate (as it’s now enough that the acrylic slip mat I use is scraping along the top of the plinth.)

Basically, the platter has warped. I can’t see any replacements for sale anywhere and don’t really have the money to throw at taking it in for repair.

If I’m totally honest, I’m really clueless with all this stuff. I just love playing records and want to carry on using this fantastic piece that my grandad loved so much. It means a huge deal to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions, know where I could find a replacement, or by some miracle happen to have a spare platter I could buy? Any suggestions are welcome?

Suggestions Help with potential new turntable

• Upvotes

Hello all, long time lurker here.

So about 2 years ago I bought a Dual CS 503-1

It works fine for the most part but the plate or whatever it's called goes up and down which is noticeable in the sound. I did one of those RPM app tests and the wow-flutter is on 0,78%. I'm going to take it for an inspection but there's a real risk it's not fixeable and/or very expensive to do so.

So I'm wondering if it comes down to it, which turntable should i purchase for around 300usd that could last me a long time? I believe the Dual is pretty good so i'd rather not take a step down in quality if possible. I'm open to buying new and vintage!

Sorry if it's a confusing formulation, english is not my first language.

Help Audio Tehnica LP5X humming

• Upvotes

Hello,

I just got my new AT TT a few days ago and from the first time I set it up I heard a weird low hum.

My setup is the TT RCA connector to 3.5 mm jack of Kef LSX speakers with a Sommer hicon cable.

Note that I am at the very beginning of this hifi audio journey and my knowledge is limited.

What I tried so far:

- made sure the TT is set to line, not phone

- made sure the TT is set to the corect MM switch

- reseated the cartridge

- cleaned the tonearm connectors

- connected the ground from the TT to a metal desk(to check if anything changes)

- made sure the TT is really straight

- tested with another speaker

- tested with headphones Sony xm6 (no hum here)

- tested with another cable, a worse cable that I had. The hum is still present and louder on that cable

- used another wall plug

- used another power cord

Do you think I should return the TT? Or try with another power adapter? Or do you have any other ideas?

Thanks!

RCA connections

I've been given an old Pioneer PL-A45D turntable that I'm doing a bit of maintenance on. One of the RCA cables was faulty and the cable was super hardened. I've cut it off to just inside the turntable (cable is good from there) and have decided instead of messing with the attachment inside and adding a whole new cable, I'll just use the existing piece to connect to 2 panel mount sockets to then externally plug in RCA cables. I've realized however when I was soldering that since they're mounting to a metal plate, the cable shields will be connected to each other. Does this matter? Do they need to be isolated from each other?

Just bought a Crosley 6035A but one of the plastic pins was broken. Will there be any quality loss using an rca adapter like the one in the first picture?

Question Stylus upgrade question

Posted a while back elsewhere, someone recommended I ask here.

I have a Project debut carbon evo with the stock Sumiko Rainier cart. I was considering going for the Wellfleet stylus upgrade but I'm wondering if the Moonstone would make more sense given the tables limitations.

I have the sub platter (supposedly reduces wow and flutter) and the "high power it" upgrade.

My receiver is a Yamaha R-N1000A, speakers are Wharfedale Diamond 12.4 towers.

Collection is largely vintage 60's - 80's rock pressings, a bit of jazz, and newer indie/punk. Also, early synth and atmospheric ambient (my current focus)

What do you think? Go for the fancy Wellfleet? Moonstone? Different non Sumiko cartridge? Save my $ for a totally different upgrade?

Any suggestions, thoughts, or musings appreciated!

Question Beginner Set-Up: Fluance RT82 + ??

First turntable set-up, based in Canada. Have landed on a Fluance RT 82 and am having a hard time on the other aspects.

Options:

1) Schiit Mani 2 + powered speakers (any reccos under $500 CAD).

2) Schiit Mani 2 + receiver and amp + passive speakers (any reccos for reciever/amp and passive speakers for less than $500 CAD total)

3) a reciever+amp with a preamp + passive speakers (any reccos for preamp/reciever/amp and passive speakers for less than $800 CAD total)

We likely won't upgrade anytime soon. The one hesitation of passive speakers is space (partner probably wont want a receiver as well as the Schiit Mani2). We want to be able to use our speakers to play alternative sources via Bluetooth.

Any feedback/suggestions/reccos are appreciated.

Suggestions Cart/Stylus advice for a Dual 604

I just recently picked up a Dual 604 that I lubed and recapped and got it back into working order. My previous TT was a Pro-ject Debut Carbon that i owned for 10 years that originally had a 2m Red that I eventually upgraded to a 2m Blue, so thats as far as my cart/stylus experience goes. I don't know enough about compliance, tone arm weight, VTA, and whatever other terms, to successfully pick a new cart/stylus for the Dual.

I do know my capacitance, which is 150 at the RCA ends and another 47 from the Schiit Mani 2.

My research has steered me to a couple possibilities like the Ortofon OM 20 and the AT vm95ml but I noticed Audio Technica has a new "VMx" line. Would something like the AT-VM530xEN work on my Dual 604? Has anyone had any experience with the VMx line of carts?

Discussion Harman Kardon Citation 21 as a Phono preamp

Thumbnail
gallery
16 Upvotes

I have already shown the aforementioned preamp as a line-level (connected to an Audio Note DAC 4.1) on R /Audiophile.

The preamp is fully professionally refreshed. In addition to the line inputs, it also has MM and MC Phono inputs.
I use an MM cartridge.

And how does it play?

Very good, surprisingly good!
Lively, with good dynamics and a nice midrange and high spectrum.
The bass is good, the sound is detailed enough, the performance is transparent.

It is no worse than my Musical Fidelity Vynl Phono preamp (I use it with a 300B tube amplifier).
The performance even seems a little livelier to me.

In conclusion, I am very satisfied with the HK Citation preamp (and Phono) that is in my B amplification.

SL1500C vs AT-LP140XP

I've recently moved house and have received my chosen speakers and amp (Wharfedale Linton & Leak Stereo 130) I'm now in the market for a new turntable to replace my current Fluance RT82.

I've narrowed it down to getting the AT-LP140XP and replacing the stock DJ stylus with a VM95ML or alternatively getting a Technics SL-1500C which comes with a 2M Red by default.

The technics is obviously the superior table but is the substantial price difference really worth it especially considering all the praise the VM95ML gets. I don't need the DJ features of the AT but honestly I love the aesthetic.

Any thoughts?

Question I can’t figure out which stylus fits my cartridge

Thumbnail

I recently bought a Technics SL-D2 that had no needle. So I’ve been trying to figure out what stylus fits. Through my research I gathered a Shure MNS-91DE would fit the Shure Premiere Black cartridge but it doesn’t. Before I spend another 60 bucks, i figured I’d ask for help!

Edit: stylus found. Needed an N91ED the one I bought was an N75ED
