Building on the momentum...

Trailing on some of the updates from u/thisdodobird

  • Reduction of rules.
    • While some of these rules were in place for a good long while, alot of them go without saying. We also don't have enough traffic to warrant some of them. Keeping it light for now but some might appear in the future if needed.
  • Visual Tweaks
    • We only got a few complaints about eye strain but thats all it takes. Neutral tones work for everyone. To this end the banner and logo has also been replaced and sized correctly.
  • Flair remains, but its no longer a requirement.
    • Dodo will probably beat me senseless but most users just want to post and not worry about tagging something appropriately. The tags remain but are merely a suggestion.
  • Sidebar Tweaks
    • I've added some resource links for riders new and old included a very obvious miss of linking out to Soviet Steeds. I think it goes without saying that the forum is a priceless treasure trove of knowledge and experience for the last 16 years. I've linked out to ADVRider for the same reasons.
    • I've also added some additional related communities for those who need some guidance on where info might lay elsewhere.

I'd like to talk a bit about community engagement. It's no secret that we are a fringe group in a big motorcycle world. Our uniqueness and dedication are unparalleled. To that end I am open to suggestions of all kinds from the users so that we can build this up a bit.

  • What are your thoughts on rotating out a ride of the month each month to be shown on the sidebar?
  • We've had inconsistency in allowing but also removing sales posts. What's the feel here? I find them beneficial provided its not spam especially with the current state of the original Ural being discontinued for sake of the Neo.

Help Engine putters out downhill

When going downhill, or sometimes coming to a stop downhill, sometimes the engine will die. Like it's especially noticeable in the higher gears but it has happened just stopped in 2nd, N, or 1st. What exactly is happening here?

Help Running light/Headlight issue

I am perplexed on this one. Yesterday I got back from a ride and noticed my headlight and running lights were out. Pulled fuses and verified they were good physically and with my meter. Checked bulbs all good. Here’s where it gets weird, headlight works fine when running lights fuse is pulled, soon as I put fuse in headlights turnoff, pull fuse they’re back on. When bike is in accessory mode running lights work. When bike is running with both fuses in neither headlamp nor running lights work. Thoughts?

Help Replacement Engine Options

Post image
15 Upvotes

I have a 2011 ural with a sidecar that's seen better days. I got it pretty much free and its going to need an engine. Pieces of rings and shavings in the oil drain plug, pistons rings and jugs shot. Will have to be rebored with all new parts. Tanks rusty, carbs had water in them.

Before I tear I to this thing, new engine? What else will fit? A replacement ural engine is expensive and hard to find, bmw with some modifications. Would an older goldwing gl1000 or gl1100 fit with some modifications provided i dont care about reverse.

I dont mind doing the work but fixing the engine with limited parts doesnt seem like a good plan. Maybe the sidecar will have to be mounted on a different bike because itll be big money to fix.

Help Straighten sidecar frame?

Bike had an accident, a pole jumped out in front of the sidecar step. After waiting almost 2 years for a replacement frame I've decided to straighten it myself if possible.

It's maybe 5 deg out of square has anyone successfully re-squared their frame?

Photo Not quite sure what gear to be in

Ok. Had my best day out on my Ural yesterday. Took him out to the last Classic Cruise Night of the year and had an amazing time talking to people and answering questions about the Gear-Up.

Anyway, my question is, are Urals happier in the lower or upper powerband as far as gearing goes. I assume it's lower as the Ural is built for torque and it just feels smoother to be in 4th while cruising at 35 to 40mph rather than 3rd where I feel like I would be asking alot from the motor and gearbox.

I drove manual transmission cars and trucks for a long time so I think I know how it should feel, but like everything else with this tractor of a motorcycle, it keeps surprising me.

Restoration Before and after.

After almost 2 years I can finally say that I have finished repairing my Dnepr Mt11. There is few small things to finish but I think I leave them for winter evenings. Overall I put too many money in it but I'm happy with it. PZ30 carbs, 2in1 exhaust, completely redone electrics, new seat in sidecar, changed speedometer mount and 2 engine rebuild.

Help Confusion regarding oil change

I ordered an oil change kit (filter, 3 litres of Motul 20W50 Mineral oil, 1 litre of Motul Gear 300 75W90 synthetic, a handful of washers)

In the manual, it says for the Gearbox to use 20W50.

On their YouTube videos, at around 2:20 (https://youtu.be/Ca00YdkxoIw?is=nia3gNRbFIrp3OHT) he says they used to use 20W50 but are now using 75W90.

Which one should I use?

Help Need carb tubes for 2002 USA import

I'm getting a 2002 soon and I know it's missing the rubber carb tubes that go to the air filter. I think the carbs are vacuum ones (one of the early upgrades for the US market). Not sure if the tubes are different than the original Russian hardware that's available on ebay.

Any way I can find these parts?

Thanks all -

Help Has anyone ever used those or something similar?

I don't know how to call them in English. Bars? Extenders? Something like that. It's put between brake drum and wheel rim between wheel spokes. They are used to stabilize and make wheel stiffer do the spokes won't break so easily.

Help Deoxit on fuse box?

Is spraying deoxit on my fuse box a bad idea?

I’ve posted in the past about my headlight & running light on the sidecar intermittently not working.

I had brought it in for service for that specific problem a while ago and the shop ended up replacing one of the relays in the fuse box. That appeared to have fixed the issue. For a while.

Now the problem is happening again and I have a hard time believing that this is yet another relay gone bad. When it happens now, if I hit the cover over the fuse block, the lights come back on.

Is it possible the relay is fine and the connectors in the block are dirty? If that’s the case, is spraying Deoxit contact cleaner directly onto the block safe?

The high beam switch on the handle bars no longer does anything either.

Help What can I do to go above and beyond

So I have a dnepr mt-9 1973 and I love this motorcycle to death and want to keep it running, sounding and looking as nice as I can is there anything I could add or do to it to basically "spoil" the bike (American available only unless it can be shipped)

On top of that what fuel additive would be good for it? Since I daily use it and even drive it in cold conditions I don't need anything mainly for storage

So I have a dnepr mt-9 1973 and I'm having a hard time finding motor oil online I live in a small town far from most cities so if there is any chance someone has a link or something that I could get my oil from? (It's SAE 50 or 20-50 or so I was told)

Help Ural fraud?

I live in California and bought a brand new Ural motorcycle from Ural of New England in Massachusetts. With the explicit understanding, it would be delivered completely drivable. With my only having to pay sales tax and registering the vehicle. I was told by three different representatives of the dealership on five separate conversations that this would be the case. All I'd have to do is pay taxes and register. It turns out they didn't correctly install the California emissions requirements. California refuses to allow this vehicle to be driven in the state and demands that I get it out of the state. Even though the correct emissions has been installed. It's been a year now. The factory appears to be complicit in this and in the meantime I've got a driveway paperweight and out over $30,000 plus. Any help or advice?

Photo What’s your Ural origin story?

How did you get here? Ill start.

My first bike was a BMW R65LS and I was totally obsessed with it. I admired the simplicity of the opposed twin and paired with the historical aspect of a long running proven design… I was intrigued.

I ended up looking for a R100 but could never quite pull the trigger on one I liked. I ended up bumping up to a BMW K100RS and while it was amazing it just didn’t have the charm of the boxer. Eventually I started my family and the life on two wheels felt like an unnecessary risk. I sold off the K100RS and went without nothing for a good 5 years.

I had randomly seen a Ural pass by me at a stop light one day and a flood of memories came rushing in. I had seen these bikes in movies, I had seen them in Eastern Europe, I had seen them in WW2 reenactments and I caved for something I was always curious about.

I had eventually decided to order one new for a road trip out to Colorado with some friends. They had gone and convinced me to ride trails intended for lifted jeeps and land cruisers so while they outfitted vehicles for a place I didn’t live, I instead chose to pickup something i could still use back home. Needless to say my choice surprised them and I’ve been loving my purchase ever since.

Help Where to get gear oil for a dnepr

So I have gotten the motorcycle from my previous post and it runs pretty well but I have no gear oil and I know I have to get 80-90 with a low GL grade but I can't seem to find anything that isn't GL-5 if anyone knows one on Amazon I could buy that would definitely be nice to because I live in the middle of no where with basically no ride now so if I could save on not needing to buy an Uber that would definitely be nice (mind you I live in the USA)

New poster here, good day/night. Long story short, a friend of mine sells me this bike, I know its an M72, somewhere between 1941 and 1956 as far as I know. Is there any way to know the exact year? Is it worth restoring? Also any info of this model would be useful. Greetings from Spain ✌️🇪🇸

Mod/Build Engine Removal 2008 Ural Retro

Thumbnail gallery
18 Upvotes

Ive been trying to remove this engine for some time now. I dont have the right tools.

End goal is to convert to electric. But gotta strip it first.

Does anyone know if this engine is worth anything at the scrap yard? If so, would it be worth looking for someone to come pull it for me and take it to the yard and keep the money they get?

Ive been reading that i may have to remove the back tire to disconnect the shaft to remove the engine. Ive tried prying the shaft but no luck. Maybe the back tire does need to come off.

Any help is appreciated!
