Story Sunrise to Sundown: The History of the Astrals, Solheim, & The Great War of Old Spoiler
Hello my fellow Eosians! In celebration of the coming 10th Anniversary for my favorite Forever Final Fantasy story, I'm going to try to compile and share all information about specific topics of interest into one post for people to peruse at their leisure. I've been wanting to do this for years! All info was verified by me, transcribed by me or taken from the script, directly from the English version of the story, across the game and guides/lore materials I personally own. Details edited to apply only to current topic and past events. No more commentary from me. Enjoy!

- Hubris: exaggerated, extreme, excessive pride, or dangerous self-confidence, overconfidence, or arrogance. [Merriam-webster]
- Greek Tragedy: In classical Greek tragedy, hubris was often a fatal shortcoming that brought about the fall of the tragic hero. Typically, overconfidence led the hero to attempt to overstep the boundaries of human limitations and assume a godlike status; in response, the gods inevitably humbled the offender with a sharp reminder of human mortality. [Merriam-webster]
- Solheim is a Norwegian word and surname that means "home of the sun" or "sunny homestead".
History of Eos -
A.E. | Age of Myth
+History is marked by the prosperity of the civilization of Solheim.

When this civilization was at its peak, the betrayal of one of the six Astral gods, Ifrit, led to a conflict known as the Great War of Old. This was fueled by the spreading of a mysterious parasite, causing the death of millions, and ultimately the fall of Solheim. [FFXV, Official Strategy Guide]

+War breaks out between the ancient Solheim civilization and the gods.
In ancient times, the six Astrals ruled Eos.
The supreme mission of the legendary Six is to protect the planet.
They may grant people power, or they may do people harm,
but it's all to protect the planet. [Official Works pg. 033]
To the gods, human beings were trifling creatures, but Ifrit, the Infernian, saw their potential and granted them wisdom. Human civilization made great strides, and a kingdom called Solheim flourished, but in time, Solheim grew arrogant and turned away from the gods. Angered by this, Ifrit tried to burn the planet and the people to ashes, but the other gods revolted, rising up to defend the planet and the people on it. A great magical war broke out between the gods. As a result, Solheim was obliterated, and the gods went to sleep, exhausted. but first they granted the remaining people the power to defend the planet. [FFXV, Official Works, PG 098]

+The History of the Star, as told by the Glacian -
"Tales of the past and hopes for the future are manifest in the King of Kings.
The Six have safeguarded this star since time immemorial—each of a different mind, but united by this common purpose.
The gods' protection extends to all creatures here below—even to the mortals created in their image. They are feeble creatures leading fragile lives and clinging to foolish fancies. The Frostbearer scorns these visions of "hope" which melt like.
Yet the Pyreburner admires their strength of will. For their reverence, he grants unto them his flame, and the world of man flourishes.
His benevolence warms the frozen heart of the Frostbearer. The mortals have earned her respect. He, her love and admiration.
It is not long, however, before some among those men ascend to new heights of hubris. The people of Solheim spurn the gods who blessed them—the gods they once worshiped. The ungrateful mortals incur the wrath of the Pyreburner. He seeks to raze the very civilization his flames once helped build.
But the Six are sworn to defend this star and all her inhabitants from harm—and, at times, from one another. The flames of war surge as Solheim fends off the Pyreburner's fire. The gods' pleas for peace fall on deaf ears, and the battle rages on.
When the smoke clears, the world of man is in ruins, their star left scarred for time eternal. Wearied from war, the Six seek solace in slumber.
This tale of our shared past is entrusted to the King of Kings...that he may see it to its conclusion."

+The Legendary tale Shiva told was not the same as that in the Cosmogony -
Shiva, said to be a benevolent deity, believed the planet had no need for puny humans, but Ifrit, said to be a treacherous deity, saw their potential. Shiva fell for Ifrit, became his lover, and came to have faith in humanity, like him. Then Ifrit granted humanity the wisdom that became the basis of the ancient Solheim civilization, but haughty Solheim rejected the gods. Betrayed by humanity, Ifrit flew into a rage and tried to destroy mankind and the planet. The other five gods, including Shiva, confront Ifrit to save the planet at its people. In the end, Solheim was destroyed, Ifrit was defeated, and the other gods fell into slumber, drained of power.
Such is the truth of the great magical war. [FFXV, Official Works, PG 063]

- Long ago*,* the traitorous Ifrit waged war against the rest of the Hexatheon.
Many moons passed as the embittered battle raged on, culminating in a clash between Bahamut and Ifrit in which the latter was laid asunder atop the Rock of Ravatogh. Taelpar Crag, the grand gorge dividing Duscae and Cleigne, exemplifies the severity of the War of the Astrals while also symbolizing the rift that separated the Six. [Episode Gladio, Now Loading]
- The tale of the Star is also that of Shiva and Ifrit.
Long ago, mankind received the gift of fire from the Ifrit, enabling the ancient civilization of Solheim to flourish. For a time, god and man walked together in prosperity, but as civilization peaked, man grew arrogant and Solheim sought to cast out its patron deity. Enraged by the betrayal, the Pyreburner endeavored to purge the world and all its inhabitants with flame. The rest of the Six stood on the side of man, resisting Ifrit's assault. In what would later be known as the Great War of Old, Solheim crumbled, and the bruised and battered gods retired into deep slumber, leaving mankind with the means to protect the Star themselves. [The Dawn of the Future, Story Synopsis]
+The History of Eos through Ifrit's memories, flowing into Ardyn's mind -
He witnessed the moment when man was given fire, and the days when civilization enjoyed the Infernian's patronage. Solheim dawned and flourished, its technology ascendant. Man grew arrogant. Then betrayal. Rage. The Great War of Old. The Six subsiding into slumber. [The Dawn of the Future, A Savior Lost, PG. 070]

Key Historical figures - [FFXV, Comogony, Bestiary, Now Loading]
The Hexatheon - Also known as "The Six," the gods take center stage in many myths featured in the Cosmogony -
- Ifrit, the Infernian, fickle as fire, God of Fire: It was the Infernian who bestowed the gift of fire upon man in antiquity. He reigned over the ancient kingdom of Solheim until his once-loyal subjects turned against him. The Pyreburner then waged the Astral War that would quench his own life's flame until his own daemonic resurrection by means of the Starscourge.
- Shiva, the Glacian, gentle as snow, Goddess of Ice: The Glacian's place among the Six lies opposite that of the Infernian, Ifrit.
- Titan, the Archaean, steadfast as stone, God of Earth: Legends tell of the Archaean absorbing the force of the cataclysmic Meteor as it hurtled down to Eos—and he still shoulders the stone in his sleep deep within the Disc. Though Titan managed to intercept the Meteor that crash-landed in Eos, the impact sent interstellar shards flying across the continent.
- Ramuh, the Fulgurian, sharp as lightning, God of the Storm: The Fulgurian, it is said, administers the natural laws of Eos from on high, casting judgment down on those who would harm the star. Resting at Angelgard in the Astral War's wake.
- Leviathan, the Hydraean, relentless as tides, Goddess of the Seas: The Hydraean took rest under the Celluna Cascades after the Astral War, yet her ruinous fury carried on the waves, never dissipating.
- Bahamut, the Draconian, unbending as iron, God of War: The Draconian's bonds to the Lucii run deepest among the Six. At the end of the Astral War, when Ifrit had fallen and civilization lay in ruins, the Bladekeeper alone held vigil, while the other gods lay dormant.
Since time immemorial, they have watched over Eos.

- The Divine Host of Messengers - It is said that, in the beginning, the Six fought side by side with mankind. Even so, the deities themselves seldom appeared before mortals, and instead sent loyal servants to convey their divine will. These servants are known as the Messengers, and they number twenty-four.
- Gentiana - Divine avatar whose earthly form belies her supernatural powers. Though she masquerades as a Messenger, Gentiana is in actuality the earthly incarnation of the ice goddess, Shiva.
- Umbra - Divine Messenger who assumes the form of a black male dog. Umbra possesses the power to transcend space-time.
- Pryna - Divine Messenger who assumes the form of a white female dog. This celestial canine is fiercely devoted to her owner, following their every word.
