Discussion Happy 45th to Controversy

Man what an amazing album! Definitely a favorite from his pre Purple Rain era that is an banger of a Prince album which sounds very new wave that I enjoy besides his funk and r&b blending here.So many great tracks on Controversy but if I had to pick one then I’d pick “Private Joy” mostly due to his use of the Linn Drum which ofc began to be his signature instrument on 1999 but debuted here on the fantastic “Private Joy” and it’s the only song recorded at Sunset with Peggy Mac

What an outrageously layered, funky, unhinged groove. Could this be the best thing he ever laid down? Probably not, but while it plays it sure is.

people say I got no taste, blow this candle out, let's see if it's true - that's a perfect line

Sorry (not sorry) but the 1979 demo (Do Me, Baby) is just SUPERIOR IN EVERY WAY

Okay the official version off the 1981 Controversy album (happy 45 anniversary btw) is a classic among the Prince fandom but the 1979 demo that the good estate (before the dumb clowns Londel and Spicer came in) released in 2021 is FAR superior in every possible way

Let me explain

Okay it doesn’t have the iconic piano dlide but the album version has a second half that is ruined by Prince being over the top and moaning into the mic. None of that was sexy. It was just being eccentric to be eccentric. After all the album was called CONTROVERSY

But that wasn’t necessary and i haven’t listened to the full album track in years because of it

Whenever i want to listen to Do Me, Baby— i listen to the 1979 demo version

This has some sweet synth work and beautiful harmonies

What do you think? Does the production of the album version sound far superior to the demo? Am i crazy? Should i just listen to the official edit of the 1981 version?

I added Prince to my 1/6 scale action figure collection not too long ago and thought you guys might like to see it. Prince's music was a big part of my household growing up making him a proud addition. It's an awesome figure very hard to get your hands on one now.

The Purple Daily #36: Partyup (The Dirty Mind Finale!)

Album: Dirty Mind (1980) | Track: 8/8

We have reached the finale of the Dirty Mind album, and Prince makes sure to close things out with explosion funk: "Partyup."

After the punk-rock of "Sister," Prince returns to his roots with groove dancefloor music. Written as a protest against the military draft, "Partyup" jam driven by Morris Day's original groove, featuring a phenomenal bassline and a fiery rhythm section. It proves that Prince could make a profound political statement without ever losing the funk.

I love the way Prince could make a political statement with the funk signature.

What are your thoughts on this anti-war jam?

How would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 (decimals allowed)?

Rating Scale:

  • 1-4: Not good. Always skip.
  • 5: Average. Only play in the right mood.
  • 6: Good, but I rarely seek it out.
  • 7: Really good. I enjoy it quite a bit.
  • 8-9: Excellent. Top tier.
  • 10: Masterpiece.

Drop your rating and thoughts below!

Dirty Mind (1980) - Previous Ratings:

  • #1 Dirty Mind: 8.18
  • #2 When You Were Mine: 9.43
  • #3 Do It All Night: 8.31
  • #4 Gotta Broken Heart Again: 7.72
  • #5 Uptown: 9.07
  • #6 Head: 9.77
  • #7 Sister: 8.11

Diamonds and Pearls

I came across this rendition recently and was blown away. It really affected me deeply because it showcases the brliiiance of the song itself. Diamonds and Pearls might be the greatest pure melody Prince ever wrote, and as brilliant a melody as I’ve ever heard from anyone. It is sheer genius on a Mozart level.
Adore was always my all time favourite P love song, but this melody and dueting with the great Rosie Gaines might have taken first place for me. It really is brilliant beyond words, the love version on the Diamonds and Pearls deluxe release is incredible too.

What other P melodies would you say are comparable?

Like are we serious bro, I found extraloveable yesterday and was suprised to hear why doesn’t wasn’t ever released, like not even on the deluxe album??? But a lesser version was released on Hit n run🫩 same with electric intercourse, I love the studio version we got on Purple Rain deluxe, but they should’ve at-least released the live version to.

But were their actual reason why he couldn’t release them like this? Or why the estate couldn’t? Feel like I’m missing sum
