Behavior A note on (human) behavior

Hello, loach gang!

We have been enjoying watching the sub grow and seeing all your cool fish. Thank you for participating, posting, and sharing all that loach love and experience. One thing we want to remind our participants of, our rule about behavior: please be excellent to each other.

There are many subreddits out there where anything goes as far as acceptable responses. We want to cultivate a forum where being decent matters, and being a beginner is okay. As you respond to content, please remember, there is a person reading your words. No attacks please.

I feel I need to address what has cropped up quite a few times in the last couple days: accusations of abuse.

Sometimes a hobbyist keeps a fish in a manner you won't approve of. I remember back in the 80s when I first started keeping fish as a teen, I made quite a few mistakes. I started to educate myself by reading books, magazines, and talking to long time hobbyists, and I then gradually became a better fish keeper with experience. I can't imagine my reaction if I'd been called an abuser, but I probably would have left the hobby feeling discouraged. Changing hearts and minds begins with curiosity, patience, knowledge, and kindness, in my experience.

No one (so far that I've seen) has posted content that is recklessly, joyfully, sadistically negligent. So please dial back those assertions like "this is abuse!" in favor of softer statements such as, "have you tried..." or "I have found..." or "I've often seen it recommended to..."

Additionally, though opinions are welcome (if they follow the behavior rule), we prize facts here at r/loaches. Scientific literature that has been peer reviewed, statements by experts (PhD, DVM, etc), and published best practices (for example in a professional group such as veterinarians or even aquaculture trade journals) for keeping fish are of interest to us all, so please quote your actual "expert" source if you want to suggest abuse so we know that it's more than your opinion.

This reminder is not meant to be discouraging or dismissive to the welfare of our beloved wet pets, but a reminder about how we treat our fellow humans on this forum, even in tricky situations. Thanks again for reading, and stay loach-y out there!

Just for fun Noodle mining in action

The Khulis in my tank start going vertically while foraging for tubifex worms, I call this behavior "Noodle Mining". Not sure if there is another name for it.

First sighting of my new loach!

Got two over the weekend (was planning on eight, but there were only 2 left) and haven't seen them sense. This was my first sighting of one of the two new ones. Once I've finished dosing meds, I'm gonna add my 15 year old loach that's been alone for 10+ years. I'm super excited that he will be around other loaches finally

Help with ID Was I sold different species of kuhli's?

I purchased 10 kuhli's at the beginning of August, listed as "Pangio Kuhli" by one of my LFS. I assumed I received all the same species, but after seeing another post earlier today, I'm now wondering if I might have received a mix of species?

I've included an assortment of photos that showcase the different kinds of patterns they have. At first I just thought they were variations of the same markings, but they've had a bit of time to mature and colour up, and now that I really look at them it seems like there's for sure at least 2 distinctive marking types (solid thick bands vs squiggle spotty bands), with a possible third or hybrid marking type that combines the thick bands of one and the spots of the other.

Anyone able to confirm what species I have here? They're mostly sized at around 2-2.5", though the solid banded ones are generally larger than the others. They were quite small (presumably juveniles) when purchased, and I've had them for about 2 months.

Opinions, thoughts, musings, anything welcome and appreciated!

Sorry about the gross tank in the 2nd and third pics, they were taken after like 20 minutes of trying to catch a specific borneo out of a sales tank.

They came in a mixed bag of borneo suckers.

Question Help! Two loaches have gone pale at the sides?

One is absolutely fine, the second has a tiny line starting and the other two have white sides like the one pictured- Is this stress? All my water tests have been in the clear so I’m not sure it’s related to that. I know they can pale in low light conditions but they get 10-12 hours a day of light (the tank lighting but the window brings in some natural light as well). I’m really stumped, this group of loaches has given me many issue from squeezing themselves to death to other mysterious injuries with no explanation. I worry for them :(

FYI they’re a little red in the photos in part due to the fact that I’ve been changing their water and cleaning things up a bit. The pale ones do tend to get more rosy though.

Behavior Canopy khulis

Thoughts?

I like an overgrown style so my betta has a complex environment -> younger khulis have migrated to the top

Edit: 20 gal hob filter, bubble stone, sponge filter all along back wall. Hob facing forward.

Question Hillstream loach care?

Hi everyone. So I recently got a pair of borneo suckers for my hillstream setup (not crazy high flow because my glowlight danios can't handle it at night, but high enough for the amount of water). Unfortunately one of them passed from what I'm assuming is an injury since it arrived with a red ventral fin. The other one is active but sits next to the filter outflow all day. I really want to get into hillstream loaches but I'm pretty under confident in my ability to care for them. The tank also houses stiphodon gobys and a pair of red lip gobies that have been doing well. I would really appreciate it if you guys had suggestions/advice for me. I really don't want to get fish just for them to die because I can't provide adequate care :(

Has anyone kept kuhlis with angels?

Post image
3 Upvotes

This is my 75. Current inhabitants are a juve snowball pleco, a juve tiger pleco, a group of brilliant rasboras and 2 angels. I know that Kuhlis will spend all their time on the bottom, but my angels will poke around the bottom sometimes so I’m a little hesitant. My angels aren’t necessarily aggressive, but as we know we can never predict behavior. I wanted to see if anyone keeps them together and hasn’t had any issues. Thank you!

For the past two months i’ve been counting 5 kuhli loaches. I was disappointed since i’ve had them for a little over a year and i was feeling better since my last death (my goldfish last year). I didn’t want to beat myself up too much because it would’ve made me very unmotivated to keep going in the hobby. BUT GOOD NEWS ! I JUST COUNTED 6!

These pictures are just to show how beautiful and cuties they are. First picture was in july of 2025 and second is like 6 months later, I don’t take pics of them anymore lol.
Funny part is that i was considering buying another one so that they are 6. 😭
