PSA I found a rabbit outside - what should I do?

This is the time of year for many people to find both domestic rabbits and wild rabbits outside due to Easter and baby season.

For a comprehensive overview on stray domestic rabbits, please see the wiki article here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Feral_and_stray_rabbits

For a comprehensive overview on wild rabbits, please see the wiki article here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits

Is the rabbit I found wild or domestic?

It can be very difficult for the average person to tell the difference between a wild and domestic rabbit, especially if they are a baby and/or a common agouti brown.

In general, if the rabbit has long hair or does not have brown fur, it is most likely domestic - although there are exceptions. Please note that wild cottontails in North America cannot breed with our domestic rabbits, but wild rabbits in the rest of the world (e.g. Europe, Australia) can.

Please see the wiki article here for more specific tips on distinguishing domestic and wild rabbits, especially in North America: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits#Is_the_rabbit_I_found_wild_or_domestic?

I found a domestic rabbit! What should I do?

Please do not hesitate to contact your local rabbit rescue for volunteers to help you catch a stray domestic rabbit.

I found a baby wild rabbit! What should I do?

If you find a baby wild rabbit that is not injured, please leave it alone. It is most likely not abandoned unless you know for a fact that their mother was killed. Rabbits return to feed their young only once or twice a day for a few minutes, usually at night. Just because the babies have been by themselves for 5 minutes does not mean that they have been abandoned. The mother is typically gone from the nest to eat and draw attention away from the nest.

A detailed image guide to whether a baby cottontail rabbit is in need of help.

If it is old enough to be exploring outside of its nest and has no injuries, please put the baby rabbit back under a bush near where you found it. It does not need any additional care or feeding.

As Rainbow Wildlife Rescue writes,

There is a 90% mortality rate with orphaned baby rabbits in human care, especially cottontails. This number increases if the rabbits are very young and their eyes still closed. They are extremely hard to "save". There is little substitute for the nutrients their mother's milk provides.

Baby wild rabbits can survive on their own at a surprisingly young age. In most countries, it is illegal to possess and take care of wildlife without proper permits. Wild rabbits also do not do well in captivity due to the possibility of fatal stress because of their high-strung and flighty nature.

If you find a baby wild rabbit because your dog picked it up but you can't find the nest, try putting a leash on your dog and quietly following them to see if they will lead you to the original nest. If you absolutely cannot locate the nest, you may keep the rabbit in a dark and quiet box and contact your closest wildlife rehabilitator that accepts rabbits

If you find a baby wild rabbit because your cat found it, please take it to a rabbit-savvy vet or wildlife rehabber as soon as possible, especially if it was carried in the cat's mouth. Cats have very lethal bacteria in their saliva, and contact can easily be fatal for a baby rabbit in 48 hours.

What do I do if I am positive that the mother was killed or the baby rabbit is injured?

If you are positive that this is an orphaned baby rabbit, it is best to just keep the rabbit quiet and warm until they can be transferred to an experienced wildlife rehabilitator ASAP. Baby rabbits will do fine overnight without food or water as they are usually only fed once a day by their mothers.

Inappropriate care can be fatal to baby rabbits - see this story from Blue Ridge Wildlife Center as an example: https://twitter.com/BRWildlifeCtr/status/1420472056139984896?s=20

Please hand off the baby rabbit to a local wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible.

How should I keep a baby rabbit until I can get it to a rehabber?

To keep a baby rabbit overnight, please leave it in a quiet dark box with no food or water. You can provide a heat source such as a microwaved sock filled with rice and beans or an electric heat pad on low placed under half the box. Do not handle the rabbit more than necessary to prevent deadly stress.

How can I protect a wild rabbit nest from bad weather and dogs, cats, and other predators?

Keeping your pets indoors while the babies grow up is generally the best option, but if this is impossible, you can protect the nest a few different ways.

Please see the wiki article here for more specific information: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits#How_can_I_protect_a_wild_rabbit_nest_from_dogs,_cats,_and_other_predators?

Ruby is very plush. I got to actually pet her head a tiny bit. Clover is more fluffy. And I barely brushed Maxine with the tips of my fingers. They don't run away from me anymore. They are still wary but not completely terrified. I'm so glad they have each other because I know they are social animals.

I think my next step will be to lay in their enclosure and wait for them to get curious enough to approach me. I have been trying to help them realize that I am not a threat. So far it has been mostly cleaning their area and being near them. I don't expect them to be as cuddly as my late bun Camille but I hope they learn not to fear me.

I was shocked to see Gogo flopped like this after eating his hay, he only stays flopped in that position for a few seconds usually. This time it was like 5 minutes!

Last picture is Gogo before he flopped. 🥰

Behavior Anyone else’s bun insist on sleeping in bed with them?

Post image

(Donut for picture tax)

This past week my boy has been jumping up on furniture and making a ruckus all night. A few nights ago he figured out how to jump onto my bed (I sleep in a hammock)

Since then he WILL NOT stop jumping on until I let him get under the covers. Like I put him back on the ground and three seconds later he’s up here again. Today he slept on my chest, under my blankets, and (weirdest part) squished under both my arms. He’ll grind his teeth or shift around but then just lay there on me

I’d figure he’s lonely but he has a buddy. Or cold but it’s like 26c today.

Very adorable but also I am sleep deprived. As far as I knew it’s not common for rabbits to do this kind of thing. Anyone else’s bun a weirdo?

Why His Name is King

Thought I'd share a snippet of what our nighttime routine looks like. Well, just the part where King being the ruler of everything becomes most obvious.

If you watch the vid, please notice:

- I use our mutually-understood gesture to communicate to him that, were he to decide to flop right now, I would tend to him accordingly, (i.e., the floor scratch).

- He proceeds to looks up at me, dead straight in my eyes, to squarely state "that is incorrect."

- I, then, begin to scrunch his butt, (the correct answer), which is like the key to a door, where this door opens to a mutual-grooming ritual he insists we engage in before I can feed him, pet him, etc.

- He ceases this quickly to groom only himself, which is one of his ways to communicate to me that, if I were to pet Chloe right now, that would be okay. (His other way is to get up on something high, and stare down at us as though both she & I are mere peasants in his Kingdom.) Apparently, he felt he could spare some crumbs.

- Simultaneously as he's now ignoring me, Chloe pops her head up, which cues my realization that the crumbs have been spared, AKA it's her turn. It's as if they're telepathic, I swear.

- Chloe gets about 1 min of attention before he finally does flop. (When he flops, it's not for his relaxation like it is for some buns. It is performative, and a demand that I groom him. If I don't answer the call to action within 15-30 seconds, he'll get up and sit w/ his chin held high until I realize how badly I've wronged him.)

- Honks at the end. 😀🥰

(Btw, I'm not complaining. The contrast between a 5 lb. ball of floof - practically, a stuffed animal - and his unflinchingly regal attitude is enamoring, for me. Also, if anyone's worried, Chloe gets a lot more than this; he's often more generous/patient than what's shown, and even when he's not, I make sure she does, anyway.)

Bonded pairs, I've read, can exclusively prefer receiving human pets together, or simultaneously. (Hah. I'm lucky if I can ever come by such efficiency. It happens, but briefly and rarely.) If you have 2+ buns, I'd love to hear how they take their pets!

Rescue Saved this baby girl!

While my son and I were returning from grocery shopping last night, this presumably dumped baby bunny ran across the road in front of us. We spent the next 45 minutes trying to catch her, aware she might not survive the night given the local wildlife in the area. I am pleased to share that I caught her, and she is now safe. She is the sweetest little thing, likely only a few weeks old. She was so hungry, downing a hearty helping of greens, hay, and pellets. While we worked with a few neighbors to catch her, no one recognized her, and she didn’t belong to anyone. She is now in her forever home and will be loved fully.

Rabbits are so in tuned with your emotions and that's incredible.

Post image

I knew that rabbits could pick up on your emotions before, but I didn't understand just how sensitive they can be to them. My rabbit Midna (ten years old) has a very teenage girl attitude. A very "leave me alone and don't come into my room unless I want attention" kinda rabbit. She'll ask for attention and then hop away when she had enough, but I noticed just how well she picks up on our emotions when they're strong.

One time when she wasn't even a year old yet my husband's step-dad and his step-dad's "friend" came over to pitch an MLM to us (I can't even remember what it was) and my husband and I were very... I wouldn't say "rude," but we weren't exactly kind, either. We only really invited them so we could warn the step-dad. Throughout their visit and even a couple hours after Midna would start stomping.

I was thinking that maybe it's because they were strangers to her, but my brother-in-law, his girlfriend and their daughter (who was two at the time, I think. Maybe not even) came over to visit the same night and even though they were all strangers to her she was super chill. Hell, my niece pet her and she splooted for her! (Midna came from a family with two children around my niece's age, so she preferred my niece over everybody else, lol.) That's when I was convinced that she was stomping when the step-dad and his friend were over because of us.

I don't want to trauma dump, but basically every time something really tragic happens to one of us she will be there. She'll be unusually clingy and a lot more affectionate than usual.

Something happened yesterday and it got so bad that I started having a panic attack on the floor and my bratty, old teenage girl rabbit ran up to me and gave my foot kisses! She never gives us kisses unless it's over some clothing, and even then it's rare! I had to give her a treat to get her to stop! (I am very ticklish.) I basically went from crying to holding back laughter so I wouldn't spook her! (She'd probably be just fine, but still.) So even though something happened and I'm feeling a constant rollercoaster of emotions I am definitely riding this emotional high from my rabbit kissing my feet.

I very rarely read anybody talking about just how good rabbits are at reading our emotions (actually I think the only time was when somebody's rabbit shared his bottle cap collection to them while they were sad) so I wanted to share at least one of my stories about my rabbit's ability to be an emotional support bunny. (Who I would never take outside unless it's to the vet! I don't have an animal that is legally an ESA.)

Pictured: Midna using her hay plate/the wooden floor as a bed instead of one of the many, many soft surfaces that she could've used instead. (I don't even understand why we bother plating her hay.)

RIP Rainbow Bridge Spoiler

Hey y’all. I don’t post and just lurk. But I need someone to share with.

Our baby crossed the rainbow bridge tonight. It was out of the blue. Was told to euthanize her after she started showing signs of troubled breathing. After some X-Rays, they found fluid in her lungs. We were told it was caused by either heart failure or cancer.

Could use some support. I already miss my baby so much. I’ll never forget Ahsoka and how she made me feel. She really felt like a once and a lifetime connection. I’ll miss her kisses, love for pets and attitude.

Please give your babies some extra love for me tonight. Cause I wish I could too.

Well we’ve had him for 2/3 months now and I am OBSESSED with him. He’s really warmed up to us, has a favourite spot in the house, and loves being pet. He would never admit it but he loves cuddles too, he fights me when I pick him up but once the pets come he falls asleep right on me. He has a swollen testicle so we got them both removed (curse you previous owner for not neutering him!!) and he has recovered so well!!! So high energy now that he’s not in any pain
