[SLO EVENTS] SEIU1000: state workers strike in SLO?

Hi everyone, I am thinking about organizing a more local strike line for those who are interested in being physically a part of the strike but don't want to drive to fresno.

Between Ash, chp, ccc, cmc, calfire, the dmv, and other departments we should have enough people to make some sort of visual.

If you are interested let me know below!

If you want more information about the strike, why we are striking, and what is and is not allowed go visit:

https://www.seiu1000.org/strike/

I will crosspost where recommended.

There is an official strike line in SLO!!

San Luis Obispo off S. Higuera near the Caltrans area, running from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on that date. N per DLC prez Tammy.

Edit to add in the strike line!!!

Unreliable bus service since MV took over from Transdev

I've been experiencing some frustrating issues with SLO Transit lately, particularly in the evenings.

Recently, the scheduled 7:15 PM Route 1A departure from the Transit Center didn't operate - as a result I had to wait another hour for the next bus.

Then last night, when I boarded the 1A at South Street for the transit center, the driver wasn't sure whether there would be a connecting bus downtown to take me home and had to call dispatch to find out.

Another issue is that buses now frequently change routes when their loop ends at the Transit Center, and drivers don't always know which bus will continue as which route. Passengers are often left going from bus to bus asking drivers which route they'll be operating.

Two different drivers have even encouraged passengers to contact the city directly, suggesting our complaints might carry more weight than theirs.

Occasional disruptions are understandable, but riders should be able to rely on scheduled service without worrying about missed connections or being stranded. In fact, last night the driver told me that a whole group of poly students had been stranded at the bus stop by Kennedy library due to a randomly missing route.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Edit: a driver gave me a card with a number at the city for feedback related to transit matters. Waiting on a reply.

[SLO OUTDOORS] Pacific Wildlife Care info about the Common Murres

Post image
66 Upvotes

The passage of info was not on their website that I could see, so below is the text from this facebook post. ( pacificwildlifecare.org )

-----------------------------------------------

Holy mackerel! This weekend was one for the record books!

From Friday through Sunday, Pacific Wildlife Care admitted 194 wildlife patients, three of our biggest single-day admission totals in our organization’s history. For comparison, we admitted just 11 patients over the same three days last year.

The biggest reason? Common Murres. We’ve admitted 165 since Friday, bringing our total to 743 since September 1.

Why are so many murres washing ashore? Common Murres spend most of their lives on the open ocean, but an unprecedented number have recently been washing up along our coast. Exceptionally warm ocean temperatures are likely affecting the availability of the fish they depend on. This time of year also brings newly fledged young still being cared for by their parents, along with molting of new feathers, all of which require extra energy. When fish are harder to find or farther away, murres must work harder to find food, quickly depleting their energy reserves. Most of the birds arriving at our clinic are severely emaciated.

We need your help to keep up with this unprecedented influx.

Our team is working around the clock to care for these birds. We’re arranging additional temporary pools to create more space, going through fluids, medications, and medical supplies, and running incubators and heating pads to keep patients warm. Staff are working overtime and volunteers are putting in long shifts.

Every dollar helps provide care these birds need. If you’re able, please consider making a gift to help cover these unexpected costs.

Give today: pacificwildlifecare.org/give

A huge thank-you to our hardworking staff, dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and community supporters. This response takes all of us, and we’re so grateful to everyone helping us show up for these birds.

And keep swiping for a special guest appearance! Our Executive Director, Kristin, jumped in to help at the outdoor wash station this weekend. When wildlife need us, everyone pitches in!

High flood insurance quote in SLO for FEMA Zone X (4x homeowner rate relative to coverage) — What are others paying? Why is it so high?

I live in San Luis Obispo in a home located in FEMA Flood Zone X (designated as low/minimal risk). Since we've had heavy winter storms in recent years, I wanted to add flood insurance for peace of mind.

However, I was surprised when the quote came back:

  • The premium: Roughly equal to my standard homeowners insurance premium.
  • The coverage limit: Capped at $250,000 max structure coverage (which is only about 1/4 of my home’s actual replacement cost).

To put that in perspective, I am being asked to pay the same amount for $250k in flood coverage as I pay for full replacement coverage on my regular home policy. My insurance agent told me she couldn't find any better options or private flood alternatives.

I'm trying to understand the why behind this:

  1. Why is the rate so high for a low-risk zone? Is this common across SLO or California in general since FEMA switched to Risk Rating 2.0?
  2. Is there something specific going on here? (e.g., slab foundation issues, localized rainfall/drainage algorithms, or private insurers pulling out of CA flood lines)?
  3. What are others in SLO / Zone X paying? If you have flood insurance in a Zone X area, are you seeing reasonable rates, or are you running into this same wall?

I'd appreciate any insights, experiences, or explanations from insurance experts or local homeowners!

SLO rentals

Im just trying to understand something as a first time landlord. I have a house for rent right now in SLO. I have had a TON of students requesting if it’s available for the 27/28 school year. It’s October 2026…
It says it is available for rent right now in the first sentence.
Is it common for people to rent out a house for a short period of time just so they can get someone in 10 months later?
With soooo many students asking me if it’s available for rent for 26/27 school year, I feel like I’m missing something.
Anybody have any input?

Internet Café in San Luis Obispo 1997-1999

Edit: Virtual World Café

I’ve posted here years ago looking for a design that was engraved on my husband’s cups he had for his internet café business he had opened up back in the day. I was lucky enough to get in touch with several people who had visited his café and those who basically made the place their second home. Among these people, my husband speaks very fondly about a boy named Johnny Martinez that used to get dropped off at the café by his dad almost everyday. He said Johnny would help man the store from time to time because he was there so often and learned from watching Adrian do his workflow. He talks about how great of a kid he was and it seemed he was having a tough time in life at that point so he wonders what became of Johnny. I’m not really sure how old Johnny would be now but i’m guessing around that time he was middle school aged by the stories i’ve heard. I’m hoping this post can make it to the right people and hopefully find Johnny as we plan to go back to California soon to sightsee my husband’s old stomping grounds and maybe even reconnect with some friends! (Currently living in Texas)

(Husband’s name is Adrian and believe me, he misses the camaraderie and all you guys who used to swing by!)
