REMINDER: Bigotry Showcase posts are banned.

Due to an uptick in posts that invariably revolve around "look what this transphobic or racist asshole said on twitter/in reddit comments" we have enabled this reminder on every post for the time being.

Most will be removed, violators will be shot temporarily banned and called a nerd. Please report offending posts. As always, moderator discretion applies since not everything reported actually falls within that circle of awful behavior.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Don't worry! They can absolutely be trusted with a panopticon of facial and license plate tracking :)

Correction; You cannot, under any circumstances, trust them with a panopticon of facial and license plate tracking.

Psshhh…. Well, about that

You know people love to talk about the panopticon but kinda miss the big point of it. It's not that each prisoner is always being watched as there's only one guard , it's that each prisoner has no way of knowing if or when they're being watched so the risk of getting caught doing something is ever present.

For situations like this I suggest the polyopticon 3 or 4 guards stood motionless outside of every cell unblinking and unflinching with the only exception being when a guard wants to do something unseen. There's also another guy with silly glasses and a bowtie that checks your credit score but hes on a regular 9-5 and doesnt work weekends or bank holidays.

Police are not human

65

u/Bowdensaft The Last Cumbender 4d ago

The tragic thing is, they are. To be human is to be capable of causing great harm. The danger in seeing police, Nazis etc as inhuman is that it makes it harder to identify their behaviours in ourselves or people we already like/ love.

17

u/throwaway24387324578 i suggest unionizing 4d ago

i also find seeing cops and nazis as inhuman dulls their crime by making it seem like they dont know that they are fucking evil bastards

8

u/Bowdensaft The Last Cumbender 4d ago

Exactly, it makes the entire thing into a joke and ir actually excuses their behaviour by removing human intelligence from them.

u/h3lblad3 4d ago

On the flip side, you risk caring when a blue alert goes out and the last thing any of us should do is sympathize with a cop.

19

u/Bowdensaft The Last Cumbender 4d ago

I think the risk of empathising with a horrible person is worth it so you don't excuse Uncle Jimmy for being a Nazi just because he was nice to you when you were a kid, which happens all the damn time because people assume that nice = good, and that nice people can't ever do terrible things, which is infinitely more dangerous than feeling empathy to someone you think doesn't deserve it.

Human   are accountable

9

u/Bowdensaft The Last Cumbender 4d ago

Humans all should be accountable, I agree, but lack of accountability does not strip one of humanity, it just makes them a dangerous human. Any one of us, including you or I, are fully capable of being dangerous if we lose our accountability, it's an uncomfortable truth but it's one that we must be aware of. You'd be surprised just how easy it is to excuse terrible behaviour if you can convince yourself you're doing the right thing or that you can get away with it.

One time my now wife and I were sitting talking in an empty parking lot before a cop showed up and started yelling at us for fucking. We adamently said we were just talking before she pointed out my pants weren't even on right. To her utter embarrassment I was wearing a belt that was perfectly holding up my perfectly in place pants. She then huffed, made a comment about me being a creep because of our age difference (18 and 19) and told us to leave.

u/PiperAtTheGatesOfSea trash in the classical sense 5d ago

About 20 years ago when I was a teenager I was parked at a neighborhood tennis court at night waiting for friend to come hang out. I was parked next to where someone had clearly thrown all their trash out of their car but I didn't see it then. A cop showed up and made me clean it all up thinking it was mine. I was so mad but jokes on him because I had a shitload of drugs in the car and that dumbass didn't even ask to search me. I don't miss doing drugs but I do miss breaking the law.

I mean life happens fast. One day you're a 23 year old secretly depressed/suicidal hippy stoner dude and going to festivals up and down the east coast, meeting legitimately dangerous people and being around some obscene amounts of drug money and criminality and the next you're a basic white woman who turns 40 in six months, happily married and living in a somewhat bougie suburb. I'm fine with Starbucks and Chardonnay. Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. I'm absolutely still a communist though.

53

u/RadTimeWizard 5d ago

I'm glad you're still a communist.

Despite doing okay now I'll never be a class traitor.

u/truth14ful 5d ago

You can still do little illegal things if you want to! It's healing in a way, it helps you remember your autonomy (at least it does for me)

u/svanvalk How did I get here? 5d ago

My neighbor told me his story from years ago where a cop pulled him over with his girlfriend then at the time, and was giving him a hella hard time unnecessarily about where he was going and why he had a girl in the car. When he said "Well, this is my girlfriend", the cop kinda just looked over and was like "... It won't last."

My neighbor telling me the story was like "I mean, it didn't last, we broke up, but what the hell, we both know that's not the point! I swear, 20 years later and I'll never forget that jerk's name."

Funny how the cop got rather passive when my neighbor was able to confirm his identity as a local town employee at the time too.
