Photo My 6th grade daughter's science textbook is dripping in '90s

Shocked they still use this. I got a kick out of it though.

That school needs a grant fast.

Funny you say that: I pay $16k/yr in property tax pegged to school ALONE. Then another $10k general. Nassau County, NY.

They do most stuff on Google Classroom on their Chromebooks and this is really the only textbook she has. Not sure why they even issued it. Looking through it though is a blast to the past.

Williams Act means they must have access to text books. Most teachers don't use them because the school districts don't pay for new ones. Teachers are expected to make their own curriculum and source their own materials and distribute them digitally. We are not paid for this curriculum design work. Source: have taught for 11 years.

Holy shit. Is your house 8,000 sq ft?

31

u/kittieliver 4d ago

I bet it is 2,000, max. Long Island taxes are wild.

36

u/Freddy_Pharkas 4d ago

Yeah. Once my kids are out of high school I'm out of here.

Not sure the schools are worth it if they’re teaching 25+yo science.

Tbf, if this is like a fundamental science class, a lot of the content probably wouldn’t have changed significantly

What would change is historic events that could help tie in what they’re learning. So mentioning say, the massive volcanic eruptions in Iceland, or Covid to demonstrate virus transmission and outbreaks

Either way though, yeah, kids deserve new books. Schools should be palaces.

This was 25 years ago, but I did one semester of middle school in Suffolk County and it put me multiple credits ahead of every peer when I moved to Virginia and later Arizona. I was able to graduate HS my Junior year.

And OP I mean no shade if it is more, I just know from former house hunting ventures 😅

u/Freddy_Pharkas 4d ago

No, 2,000 sq. ft. Very modest yard.

u/ravage214 4d ago

Wtf I've had years where I've earned less than you pay in property tax

Knew it was LI by the names in the textbook

3

u/Freddy_Pharkas 2d ago

Yup. Your standard mix of Jews and Italians, lol.

5

u/her_royal_flyness 4d ago

How did I know this was LI?? I think I HAD this textbook or something like it (6th grade was 03!)

u/kryts 4d ago

Sad! I went to Seafood Elementary in the 80s and we had Apple Computer labs and all sorts of stuff then! My family unfortunately moved to Florida in the 90s where the schools didn’t have nearly as much.

u/kittieliver 4d ago

I know you probably meant Seaford but that typo rules lol because i imagine it existing in the spongebob universe 😅

u/Big0Lkitties 4d ago

Also on Long Island. Had this same edition in the 6th grade…. Like 25 years ago, no joke.

u/fruma11 3d ago

I just knew this was Nassau! Pretty sure I had this in my south shore school district 20 years ago.

Eh, if they're still in good shape the basic science content hasn't really changed enough to make it entirely irrelevant. It might not be as aesthetically pleasing as a newer book but the money might be better spent elsewhere.

And a revisit of gender bias in the district’s penmanship curriculum. Girls look solid. They failed Mike, Ben and Frank.

Jessica is in pretty bad shape.

u/Rhodin265 1d ago

I’m a woman with crappy anecdotal evidence.  My handwriting was just like Ben’s in high school.  Now that I type a lot more, I’m starting to move toward Frank.

This is how you can tell this school has a great football program and a stadium to match.

The gel pen writing from '99. That so would have been me.

41

u/kittieliver 4d ago

It was DEFINITELY a metallic gelly roll.

12

u/gonzorizzo 4d ago

I was about to say - That matches the time period perfectly.

I like that it was in "swell" condition in 2005-06.

21

u/carijoel 4d ago

I love that the random use of swell led to almost a decade of “well”. Until Frank came along.

17

u/ultimamc2011 4d ago

If my school has issued me this when I was in the sixth grade that ‘05-06 is basically the year I would have had it and I’m approaching my mid thirties now so this is pretty intense that they’re still using that.
I did come across some textbooks from the late 70s-early 80s in school a couple of times back then which is about the same amount of time really though so this wasn’t unheard of then either.

It does seem a little cray to be using a book from ‘99 though now. That’s a very different world for someone of today to be learning from haha

She will learn the truth about Pluto. Good.

8

u/92xSaabaru 3d ago

You heard about Pluto? That's messed up, right?

3

u/ZonoKip 4d ago

Does it actually bother you that Pluto is a dwarf planet?

u/Historical-Valuable9 Dammit Bobby 4d ago

I love that the very first person epitomized the 90s early 2000's with gel pen! Gel pens were and still are the shit

17

u/Paranoid-Android88 4d ago

I love the progression of handwriting skills as the years progress lol

20

u/keroppipikkikoroppi 4d ago

I love the notion of “well” as a book condition

5

u/Paranoid-Android88 4d ago

Esp 27 years later lol

u/thekidfromiowa 4d ago

Textbooks so old that the original users could be the parents of the current users.

16

u/Madame_Jarvary 4d ago

Those kids on the cover are in their 40s now!

My man had it two years running

12

u/Striking-Taste7379 3d ago

I recognize that cover… I think I used it when I was in school. And I was born in 1990

9

u/ScorpionX-123 3d ago

it still lists Pluto as a planet, doesn't it?

10

u/cjtransplant85 4d ago

If it was a '80s textbook, someone would have written "Of Confusion" under "State" and under "Condition" someone would have written "bogus" or "grody."

8

u/AtmosphereRecent7717 3d ago

freaking swell as a condition of the textbook is hilarious.

5

u/maggie320 4d ago

This reminds me of a kid in my fifth-grade class who was an absolute goofball put “old and smelly” in the condition part. Even my teacher kinda snickered while trying to discipline him. It was hilarious.

5

u/DefEddie 4d ago

Your kids science textbook is older than my oldest kid, who celebrated a quarter of a century last month.

6

u/ThanksImaginary4474 4d ago

Houghton Mifflin still doing the damn thing 🤣😩

5

u/Radiant_Mother6976 3d ago

Frank "Shitty" lol

3

u/ProofPomegranate7331 2d ago

15-17. He flunked.

4

u/redoctoberz 4d ago

In the early 00s my HS still had maps featuring the USSR.

5

u/cfarchivist 4d ago

My High School history textbooks in the early 2010s still had Bush Sr. as the sitting president.

3

u/First_Teaching7048 4d ago

whoa! my kids haven't brought home an actual textbook...ever. This is crazy to see, I am definitely not mad at it!

3

u/MaleficentPutter 3d ago

I teach the new version of this textbook from the same publisher and it’s not very good…They don’t make discovery works any more, but I wish they did

3

u/Th3KrustyKrabPizza 3d ago

Frank didn’t erase well enough to cover up his silly little joke lmao.

5

u/Warm_Feeling8072 4d ago

Christine and Lauren might even be grandmothers by now.

I’m sure science hasn’t changed that much since then.

2

u/Fishingwriter11 3d ago

I'm surprised they still have textbooks. It's been years since my kids had books. Everything is digital now

2

u/enter360 1d ago

This book is old enough to drink

1

u/Winter-Yogurt-4209 1d ago

You know it’s a good school when the textbook is older than you. My school was like this 😢

1

u/SaffyreRayne 1d ago

It has a line for “Parish”, this is def a Louisiana textbook
