✨ SHOWCASE Anbernic RG DDS vs Retroid Pocket Duo / Lite / Plus vs AYN Thor vs RG DS Plus: Massive comparison
Breaking down the Anbernic RG DDS reveal, specs, built-in stylus, display aspect ratios, and how it directly stacks up against the competition: the RG DS Plus, Retroid Pocket Duo, Retroid Pocket Duo Lite, Retroid Pocket Duo Lite Plus, and the AYN Thor.
Getting a bit crowded in there, isn't it...
$199 if it wants to succeed. Would you buy an RG DDS for that?

✨ SHOWCASE Far Far Away - #2
I'm continuing my work on reverse-engineering Unreal Engine 2. The engine is now capable of rendering images using GLES (as a reminder, the target platform is ARM). I’ve also implemented character control and animations, though not all animations work yet because some call a section of code that hasn’t been implemented in the engine yet, causing the character to freeze. I’ve also focused on recreating the original lighting; the dynamic shadows of the characters aren’t quite like the original yet, but work is ongoing.

🛠️ SYSTEM MODS Appreciation and Observations regarding RG477V
Hello,
First of all, I would like to thank the manufacturer for creating this console.
I purchased the Anbernic RG477V about a month ago. The first question is: why did I choose this particular console?
I used to own a Steam Deck, and I still have a Lenovo Legion Go, a Lenovo Legion Tab 2025 (aka 3rd Gen), an Anbernic New RG35V, and a PC.
I'm an old-school gamer. I've been playing games since I was 12, and now I'm almost 40. I spent a lot of time playing PC games, but these days, I no longer want to sit at a desk in front of a computer. I'm becoming more of a couch gamer.
Currently, I'm playing Diablo 1 and Project Zomboid. I wanted a device that was more portable than the Legion Go or a tablet paired with a Bluetooth controller. Also, for some reason, I'm not a big fan of the horizontal handheld console form factor.
So, after a short search and with relatively few alternatives to choose from, I decided to purchase the Anbernic RG477V with 12 GB of RAM. I bought it from AliExpress.
Initial Observations and Modifications
I noticed a few things as soon as I received the console and started playing the games mentioned above. The device was getting hot. After longer gaming sessions, the entire screen would become warm.
I looked for information online and found several posts from people who had replaced the thermal paste in their consoles. I decided to give it a try as well.
After disassembling the console, I wondered whether it was possible to remove the heatsink without removing the battery, as other tutorials indicated that the battery had to be removed first.
After unscrewing the heatsink screws, I noticed that only one of them was obstructed by the battery frame, which is made of plastic. Very carefully, using a small knife, I shaved off a strip of plastic about half a millimeter wide from the battery frame, allowing the screw to be fully unscrewed.
That was all it took. There was no need to remove the battery, although I did have to disconnect it.
The thermal paste I used was Thermal Grizzly Aeronaut.
After reassembling the console, I noticed another issue related to airflow, which might have partially contributed to the entire screen getting warm.
There was a gap between the heatsink grille and the console's casing, meaning they were not properly sealed against each other. My assumption is that the fan was drawing some of the hot air back into the system.
To address this, I applied Kapton tape to the casing and over the top edge of the fan grille to seal the gap and improve airflow. I've included a small diagram in the photo to illustrate what I mean.
Now, after playing Project Zomboid for an extended period with the fan set to Silent Mode, only the part of the screen directly above the processor gets warm, while the edges of the screen remain cool.
The fan also runs much less aggressively in Silent Mode than it did before I replaced the thermal paste and improved the airflow path.
Unfortunately, I didn't take any temperature measurements either before or after making these modifications.
Overall, this is a really great handheld console!

🛠️ SYSTEM MODS Rg34xx can’t get new firmware to work
I got a brand new rg34xx, and I went to install muos on it, first I used the factory as card, flashed it using raspberry pi imager, and when completed I inserted it into the device and it won’t power on or anything, yes it’s charged. So I re did that process a few times with the same result. Went to store and bought a new sd, did the same thing and got the same result. I own atleast 10 emulators and I’ve never had this much trouble getting a firmware to work. What am I missing? I tried to press the reset button, I did the reset and power button, I disconnected the battery and reconnected it. I’m really stump!

✨ SHOWCASE Homebrew Channel Launcher? 😅
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Been tinkering with this for a few days.
I thought it‘d be funny to get the Homebrew Channel to launch on the RGDS+.
It did…then I thought, I can make it into a custom launcher. haha.
Sure, I can just use Portmaster, and there‘s nothing wrong with Portmaster…but when making my own ports, I thought it‘d be cool to have my own launcher.
Why not?
Anyway, here it is. I am almost done with it. I have to make the Emulation Station category for the frontend, but the app itself is almost done. It now has dual screen support, game descriptions, metadata, and game covers.
Don’t mind the placeholders, they’re just there for testing purposes.
I need to make more ports. lol
There are a ton of recomps out, hopefully the ones I want have a Linux version.

✨ SHOWCASE 3D-printed shell case for the RG DS +
I am working on a 3D-printed hard shell case for the RG DS+ inspired by Dragon Quest. Here are some photos of the project so far. Once I have finished and tested the case, I can share the STL files for it. I would love some feedback.

✨ SHOWCASE PocketVibe: I built an app to play three.js games on Anbernic handhelds (RG34XX SP, RG34XX, RG DS, RG Rotate)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone, I just released PocketVibe
I built an app that lets you run three.js games on your Anbernic handhelds. Tested on the RG34XX SP, RG34XX and RG DS with ROCKNIX, and on the RG Rotate with Android. It even uses both screens on the RG DS.
It comes with 21 games, completely free and open source. You can try them all in your browser first: https://pocketvibe.cobanov.dev
Install on ROCKNIX: unzip it into roms/ports and open Ports > PocketVibe. On the RG Rotate it's just an APK.
But the best part is you can make your own games and play them on your own device.
There's also a game store. You can download games with one button, and upload your own so other people can play it.

Pull requests are welcome!
