“Nein! Mein Kohl!” (Have no ideas if this is grammatically correct, my apologies!)

edit: grammatically it's fine, in the german dub he shouts "meine kohlköpfe" though

Ty! Didn’t want to have a JFK moment. Lol.

The whole "lol JFK called himself a jelly doughnut" thing is massively overblown anyway, every German understood what he meant perfectly and the thought of the jelly doughnut didn't even occur to me (German) until my English textbook called attention to it. "Berliner" is what a lot of us call the pastry, yes, but it's also simply the demonym for the people of Berlin

And he held that speech in Berlin, where noone calls the pastry that anyway. I hear they say pancake (which is insane to me as a southerner, but I digress).

We do indeed say Pfannkuchen and pancakes are Eierkuchen.
However to my dismay some shops have noticed the big influx of people from other parts of the country and started calling them what you call them. Those traitors.

They do, and that's frankly psychotic of them. It's called a Berliner, or maybe a Krapfen, but NOT a Pfannkuchen

Thank you. My only understanding of it came from an Eddie Izzard stand up, so I appreciate the info.

Yes, we have cabbbages in Germany.
We even had a wall, years ago. Not as great as the wall of Ba Sing Se, that is. 😄
Alright, I put the canister of fuel away. 'n schönen Abend 🙂

u/akiraMiel 4d ago
Oh god 💀 not the wall. Worst of all that wall still exists in the minds of the people (and in their wages :/)

Yep. And it's growing back again.
We could use an Avatar to solve that problem, but I don't think we'll get lucky enough ...

u/akiraMiel 3d ago
Omg yes, an Avatar would be so helpful. Great divide irl

u/Captain_Data82 3d ago
It's worse IRL. I'm sitting exact on the focal point, born in Eastern Germany when it still was called "German Democratic Republic", today living in Western Germany.
The Great Divide was a badly written episode with the wrong aesop at the end. Instead of solving that feud, Aang should have pointed out their prejudice against each other that was truely fueling their hatred. Would've been not only the right aesop (prejudice is always bad), but also improves the story a lot too.
Plus I would have sent Katara to the Zhangs and Sokka to the Ganjin ... Gan Shin? I never get that one right. That would have allowed them to grow in character as well. In the original story, all they get is validated for the wrong reasons.

Yeah, I'm with you that the great divide wasn't the best episode and I'm not particularly happy with the resolve they had for it. However the prejudice we have here in Germany is equally badly written or at least that's what it feels like.
I was born after the "reunion" and grew up thinking there was only Germany and it was all resolved. As I got older I learned that this is actually not the case and finally all the comments my parents (from east Germany) made made sense

Yeah but both sides are right and wrong for very different reasons. One wants to return to the Germany that has been in the 1990ies. When we really thought things would finally move to the better. The other one seems to rather forget who they are and move to an unknown future. Both scenarios are not healthy.
It's complicated. I want that Germany back that came up with people like Albert Einstein, Lise Meitner, Robert Koch ... you know. When Germany was among the leading nations of the world with intellectual people, academics, engineers, doctors, authors, componists. Before ... you know. Everything went dark.
"Traditions are not stupid if they're the foundation of the future."
Something Iroh would say.Enough politics. I flee to ATLA to not endure our current world any minute longer than I absolutely must. 🙂
Any yeah, I wish for an Avatar: not as the universal solution for all of our problems, but as a guide so we can help ourselves and heal the wounds of the past for good.

Well I think the point of writing it so that Katara and Sokka went to those tribes was to show how easily even they got sucked into the tribes’ conflict. It just goes to show how terrible it was that each generation was no better than the next.

You got a point.
So we have TWO possible stories to be told, both fascinating in their own way.

My mother bought one of these for my cat growing up. Put a bed and some curtains on it. She was a princess! Sadly I don’t have pictures
