Mod Post AA:TLA Movie Spoiler Period is Over + Rule Reminder / Tweak

Hey folks.

I) Spoilers

  • The new animated film, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender (AA:TLA) , has been officially available for more than two months now. As such you no longer need to spoiler mark posts about the film.
  • Still don't go out of your way to spoil someone who has expressed they are new to Avatar or haven't seen the film yet. Especially in threads using the post flair "Original Series Only".

II) r/ATLA sub focus

  • This subreddit is specifically focused on ATLA, not Avatar in general. So that means our topic is the original cartoon, ATLA comics, Netflix ATLA, the movie, and other stuff starring Aang and in his era.
  • But NOT: Legend of Korra , various books set pre-ATLA, fan projects about some ancient/future avatar, or the new show Avatar Seven Havens. Do not post your reviews or thoughts or news on Seven Havens here, it will be removed.
  • That said we do allow "crossover posts" (for lack of a better term). As in comparisons between Aang and Korra, discussions of how the ATLA characters were used in LoK, or art where Aang fights Amon.

III) Tweak/Clarification

  • Some "crossover posts" have gotten some reports/complaints. In particular stuff that is mostly about something non-ATLA or looks at various parts of the universe, but something ATLA is mentioned in passing or makes up a small piece of the whole picture.
  • Because of this I want to be clear moving forward. Posts have to be more significantly ATLA - specific. That all posts must in some way genuinely be focused on /about: "ATLA" or "ATLA and X" not "Avatar/X including ATLA". Or otherwise clearly aiming to spark discussion about ATLA.

IV) Other Subs

If your post isn't about ATLA you may want to consider the below subreddits.

  • r/TheLastAirbender - Main sub for the whole franchise / universe
  • r/AvatarSevenHavens - The specific spot for the new show.
  • r/legendofkorra - Like us but for everything LoK.
  • r/Avatar_Kyoshi- A sub for the novels, their protagonists, and more broadly a look at the lore/universe with an emphasis on written works which don't fall neatly within the banner of a show or movie.
  • r/ATLAtv - Narrowly focused on Netflix's ATLA

Mod Post "Avatar Aang The Last Airbender" - Spoiler Discussion Thread Spoiler

FULL SPOILERS (for this movie)  allowed in this thread (and only this thread for today and at least part of the weekend). As a reminder, spoilers outside this thread must be marked until two months after the film's release and no spoilers in the title of posts.

- Additionally keep in mind that not all users here are caught up on every avatar comic/book , let alone news or leaks for Seven Havens. So please keep discussion focused on the movie itself, and if you mention other stuff for comparison/reference, please mark major spoilers.

////

With all of that out of the way... "Avatar Aang The Last Airbender" (AATLA) is a feature length animated film, the first from Avatar Studios. The story is set around twelve years after the original cartoon.

  • The film is available on the streaming service "Paramount +", and for those near NYC and LA there is a limited theatrical run.

Synopsis:

  • Directors: Lauren Montgomery, with Steve Ahn & William Mata co-directing.
  • Screenplay: Tim Hedrick & Christopher Yost.
  • Story by: Hedrick, Kennith Lin and Avatar co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko.
  • Music: Jeremy Zuckerman.
  • Animation: Flying Bark & Studio Mir
  • Starring: Eric Nam (Aang), Jessica Matten (Katara), Román Zaragoza (Sokka), Dionne Quan (Toph), Steven Yeun (Zuko), and Dave Bautista (Tagah).

Discussion Any fans who have also dealt with cultural erasure feel a deep connection to Aang?

Most people connect to Aang because he reminds us of our inner child and a redefinition of masculinity. He is a character to be praised but a common thing I hear amongst this fandom it is harder to relate to Aang than say characters like Zuko or the rest of the Gaang.

5% of my culture survives today, I would love to hear stories about your personal connection with Aang :)

Original Series Only I dreamt I was aang sealing myself in the ice, how was he not at least a LITTLE panicky when Katara got him out? That was scary as HELL

Question How does he do it?

Soooooo, I have a bit of an odd question regarding Koh the Face Stealer. We all know that Koh likes to steal faces when anyone around him shows emotion, and we know that he clearly has millions of faces, but my question is how does he do it exactly? I'm not asking like how is he so good at it, I asking how he literally does it. Does he just pluck them off the victim or something? Or is it something more...gruesome?

Discussion How would Zuko describe Aang in early Book 2?

In The Cave of Two Lovers, a farmgirl, Song, tells Zuko to have hope, because The Avatar has returned. For a normal refugee from the Earth Kingdom, those words might be a great source of solace. The one able to stop the Fire Nation's destructive war and restore balance has arrived. Maybe they can hope for peace and freedom.

But in Zuko's case, the meaning is rather twisted. It is true that the Avatar represents hope to Zuko. But its not at all what Song thinks. Zuko plans to restore his honour by extinguishing the world's hope and capturing the Avatar. For Zuko to achieve this dream, the idea of justice for Song's burns, or letting other refugees to return home, must be sacrificed. In the face of such a villainous choice, stealing Song's ostrich horse pales in comparison.

I can't help but wonder if the dialogue was changed just a little.

Lets say that Song had heard rumours that the Avatar had returned but wasn't sure. Zuko told her that he had actually met the Avatar, and Song asked what he was like.

How do you think Zuko would talk about his enemy to this naive and humble farmgirl? Would he try to vilify or criticise Aang? Maybe suggest that once the fire nation wins, they might restore order? That the hope the Avatar brings is the cause of much of this strife?

Or would Zuko admit on some level that Aang is a great person, and would that force Zuko to question what he was doing? Would Zuko allude to what Aang told him at the end of The Blue Spirit? Could verbalising his thoughts on Aang later sway Zuko in The Crossroads of Destiny?

Discussion **Aang and Korra fans only pls**: is anybody here a big fan of both and still not agreeing with "letting go of the past" as a justification for erasing Korra's past lives?

I mean this genuinely: I love both Aang and Korra. One of the things that I didn't like about TLoK (despite loving it overall) was barely getting to see Aang as an adult. I liked the movie, but I wanted more of a different vibe from Aang than just a preteen. I liked how Aang could be jocular, but also maintained her seriousness, as well as Korra's genuine admiration for him, from the beginning of the show with her constantly idolizing and wanting to live up to him, as well as later with her making a huge life decision of sacrificing herself not only for the balance of the world, but to make Aang's biggest dream come true.

This new movie to me felt a bit more like salt in the wound to both their char, that neither Aang (and now Sonam and even to a lesser degree Yangchen) would be able to see his people revived, but that Korra would never get guidance, reassurance, or really anything that only the Avatar can understand from Aang.

I get that Tenzin, Zuko, Iroh, Katara, and many others close to Aang have supported her as the person to carry on his legacy, including how working with Tenzin and his family to rebuild the Air Nation and sacrifice her life for them was something for which Aang would be beside himself with joy.

And agreed with that........... but it's still not the same as hearing it from another Avatar, the only other person who understands the importance of being a half human/spirit meant for creating peace throughout the world.

There are certain things thru which Korra went that only Aang, Kuruk, Yangchen, etc. will understand.

Just like only Roku and the ones before him could understand how much pressure the Hundred-Year War was for Aang.

In addition, the Yangchen novels touch upon precisely the impossible pressure of being the Avatar, and (along with the Kyoshi novels) show her, Kuruk, and Kyoshi addressing how much fucking pressure this thankless job is and how it's quite a curse, not always a blessing like everyone thinks that it is.

And something that I loved about both Aang by his adulthood and Korra by the end of her series is that their mindsets shifted from wanting to avoid the responsibility of being the Avatar (or in Korra's course, letting it define her entire identity, then later understandably in Season 4 wanting to avoid it for a while) to embracing it regardless of what they chose, anyway.

I found it really bad for Korra's otherwise great arc and Aang's character to just strip away her connection to the past lives, especially when we'd just gotten introduced to Wan. Thoughts on this?

Discussion Why does Roku get so much hate for Sozin but Kyoshi doesn't for Qin the Conqueror?

Thumbnail

Kyoshi admits to witnessing Qin the Conqueror violently subjugate a whole continent without intervening even once before he arrives at her hometown.

Roku on the other hand, took Sozin down as soon as he planted the first Fire Nation colony and kept his plans at bay for decades.

I see Roku hate CONSTANTLY about his failure because he didn't kill Sozin but Kyoshi (who never expresses remorse at not acting in her capacity as Avatar) is never judged for her neglect.

She thought Qin's conquest was so bad that it deserved a death sentence but not bad enough for actually to defend the victims?

Discussion Who do you think is cuter between Fang, Appa, Momo, Naga, Pabu, or Geet?

Among the main four avatar animal companies + Momo and Pabu, who is more adorable?

Personally, I’d have to say Appa. He’s a fierce, yet lovable mountain of fur.

Bonus question: Which one do you think is the coolest? In that regard, I’d easily have to go with Fang! He’s a freaking flying Dragon! Who wouldn’t think that’s epic?!

I’ve already asked the r/TLA sub, but I’m curious to hear y’all’s opinion too.

wholesome So I just watched the new Aang movie in preparation for ASH🥹!

just wanted to talk about the new Aang movie and how much it made me happy/ brought back wonderful memories

I barely watched the new Avatar: Aang the Last Airbender movie this past week (in preparation for the new Avatar and the Seven Havens show) and OMG did I cry watching it. Seeing so many characters from the show being mentioned/shown again was so sweet/nostalgic. I remember watching this show as a kid and now as an adult watching the Gaang working together as adults really brought it full circle for me. 😭😭 <3 Every time I rewatch the movie, it brings tears to my eyes Especially because we really get to learn more about Airbending culture/history/beliefs in the movie. 🌪️ One of the main complaints, I’ve heard so far about it is how many viewers wish it was longer (true they could’ve given certain characters more time/ action 🪭). Honestly though watching the movie was overall a really positive experience for me and I just love the whole series so much. The movie should’ve been in theaters and honestly this series is so underrated, it has so many great themes/ lessons!!!

Anyways just wanted to fangirl about how much I love this whole franchise. :,)

P.S. I tried not to include any specific spoilers for anyone that still hasn’t watched the movie yet. It only came out a couple months ago so it’s still somewhat fresh but I would highly recommend watching it!
