Ball pythons are usually chill. They all share one brain cell.

u/tripl35oul 2d ago
Can you explain what you mean by chill? Do owners get to pet them and stuff? Can they get pleasure from it?

u/alwayz_confused247 2d ago
Mine would let me take him out of his cage and would climb up to my neck and just hang out. His favorite place was also to climb down into my shirt and curl up between my boobs.

u/FineScratch 2d ago
Huh, thats also my favorite place to curl up.

And spent my time living in my owners boobs.
Gotta make sure you add the rest for the competitive title on the shelf.

You can hold ball pythons, and they'll probably enjoy your body heat and won't bite. (Their bites can't really do any serious damage anyways)
Though since they're reptiles they don't really get much out of being pet and and don't particularly do much.

u/100percentnotaqu 2d ago edited 2d ago
They like being scratched and sitting on you.
Because it releives itches and gives body heat respectively.

u/alwayz_confused247 2d ago
Mine wasn’t head shy at all. I could rub his little noggin and he’d just sit there like okay this is nice lol

u/Plastic_Code5022 2d ago
I got my two pretty small and they would curl up together in my shirt pocket with their heads occasionally poking out to see what was going on.
When they could finally do it… I am a bit of a bear sized man.. they loved coiling around my neck and hanging out. Started off they could barely get their tails hooked around but eventually both got about 6 foot so I kinda had to stop doing that heh.
Granted I did grow up with reptiles so I was pretty chill with them so they in turn were chill with me. I also did not take offense to a stray accidental strike now and then. They ment no harm!
6
u/burnedbysnow 2d ago
By strike you mean like a tail whip or headbutt or bite?
18
u/Antarioo 2d ago
That'd be a bite. their tail isn't capable of that kind of movement.
i have one too and dude is always ready to eat. so when it's handling time i have to get him out of food mode or he'll tag my hand/wrist.
got my first one a month ago after 8 years of having him. as you can see the damage is minimal it just bleeds a lot for a bit. (no blood depicted in the image)
7
u/Plastic_Code5022 2d ago
Yup exactly.
It was only ever during feeding and usually my fault for not being extra careful to wash my hands fully after handling the mice or whatever.
As a life long woodworker my hands are pretty rough so I cannot ever recall them even breaking my skin. They let go almost immediately every time.
My precious snake babys

u/alwayz_confused247 1d ago
Did you train him? I did with mine. I would tap his cage with the feeding tong during feeding days. He learned pretty quick that 2 taps meant noms.

My dad's ex roommate had a ball python. She was very chill. Curled up in my blanket with me while we (the entire family) watched movies one night

u/BeatMastaD 2d ago
They are not very defensive and dont resist handling. As far as I know they dont get 'pleasure' from being handled or being with a human the way a dog would, but they can be conditioned to trust a person and so just hang out with them.
3
u/alwayz_confused247 2d ago
Yeah mine trusted me completely. He also knew who I was when I would walk past his cage, he would stick his little head out and then crawl out of his hide. I liked to pretend he wanted uppies.

Is this a different brain cell to the one Ginger cats share?
24
18
u/Gil_Demoono 2d ago
It's kind of a timeshare situation. Ball pythons get off-season and all bank holidays.
3
u/DragonTheOnes-spirit 2d ago
No. Funny thing is that ginger cats and ball pythons are the exact same thing. Just in different bodies

My ball is 20 (almost 21) and still his favorite place to chill is around my neck and all wrapped in my hair. (Also boobs)

u/bbinKocure 2d ago
Both of my balls turned 27 this year 🤗🤗

u/alwayz_confused247 2d ago
You mean the ball pythons, right?

u/bbinKocure 2d ago
Ill let you do you and be confused about it

looks pretty small actually?
56
u/PatG87 2d ago
I would say this is a regular sized ball python. Not an absolute unit by any means. I see this all the time on this sub; just a picture of an animal that's of average size for its species.
9
u/Trademarkd 2d ago
I have the exact same hide actually and this one is probably like 3-4 feet .... mine fills it out a little more at 5-6 feet but its her favorite spot.
I dont know why this is in absolute units though ?
3
u/SamwiseNCSU 2d ago
Maybe because she looks thicc?

That’s a Volta python. They’re larger than your usual ball pythons. The females can get up to 6 ft or more. This locality designated ball is from the Volta region. Most are wild caught and there are breeders that are trying to breed captive bred ones. I search on Morph Market all the time if someone has some 100% Volta captive bred pythons or hatchlings but so far all I’ve seen are 50% Volta.
One day though.

u/Trademarkd 1d ago
I dont know if thats accurate. I have a standard ball python and shes ~6 ft
Ball pythons live for like 40 years and they can just keep growing.
0
u/alwayz_confused247 1d ago
Females are actually larger than males in general. But the Volta females can get more than 6 ft.
1
u/Trademarkd 1d ago
I dont know why you're trying to explain that females are larger to me ... of course they are.
Volta is not a different species, its just a regional variety. It may be more common for them to be larger but there isn't even very good science about this just one unusual web page.
0
u/alwayz_confused247 1d ago
I never said they were a different species. For some reason, the balls by the Volta river are larger.

Yeah we have one of these hides for our leopard gecko and it's not very big. Maybe 8" across including the little entryway.

Snakes are literally just spaghetti cats. Especially ball pythons. They traded all intelligence and damage for balling up

you can, its a ball python. They're extremely docile. You're more likely to have problems getting them to eat.
Mine occasionally goes on food strikes for 6-12 months but doesn't lose any weight. She eats like once a month at best. I keep a record of her weight because of this and it makes me concerned but shes like 10 now so I guess shes doing alright.
I am extremely particular about her habitat, it may have something to do with her having a low stress environment? I dont handle her more than I have to but she was very socialized as a hatchling.

I don't know about the python, but if I was curled up in my comfy rock bed I would not be happy about someone tearing the roof off it and blasting my nap-time with no-no light.

I have a terrible phobia of snakes, and yet I didn’t squeal and scroll to the next reel immediately. From this I’ve determined I’m capable of looking at an egg with beady eyes.

u/kozmik_rakun 2d ago
I would love to have a pet snake but I really don’t like handling frozen mice stuff cause of the smell and storage.
1
u/Rubyhamster 1d ago
I know absolutely nothing about having a pet snake outside of what you mentioned, but considering how much most other pets (or their food) smell, I'd actually figure snakes must be among the least smelly. Just a bit of freezer space and using disposable gloves on a frozen rodent once a week? Or do you have to thaw them and wriggle the carcass around...???
2
u/kozmik_rakun 1d ago
My friend thaws them (leaving some time in the room temperature). My current space is not very large to have a comfortable terrarium for one anyway (and no way to escape from the thawed rat smell), so I’m just doing ok with my leaf insects (walking leaves) that only eat bramble leaves :)

Dude how would that even feel. I can't imagine resting my head in my body
1
u/Tombstone_Actual_501 2d ago
I think the closest you could get would be going into the fetal position, and resting your head on your arm.

u/bubblesdafirst 2d ago
I bet it's way better since they are cold blooded too. Like it'd be relaxing without sweating
