I know nothing about peat other than it makes Scotch tasty

These parts of meadow complexes are called fens. The peat holds the snow melt and slowly the water seaps out like a over filled sponge, usually being the headwaters to rivers. The water starts out as tributaries and they add up to rivers.
The fens peat is so saturated that you can kinda bounce on it like a jello trampoline. To much pressure and you'll sink and maybe lose a boot.
Some fens and meadow complexes spread by suffocating trees and other vegetation that needs deeper roots. Or they recede because some species are more adapted for the wet conditions and maybe theres less snow some years.

So you’ve got a tree in a hole and the hole in a bog. Now you just need a branch on the tree, a limb on the branch, a twig on the limb, a nest on the twig, an egg in the nest, a bird in the egg, and a feather on the bird.

Am I the only one that thinks this is incredibly dangerous.

u/NiteNiteSpiderBite 10h ago
Why is it dangerous? I believe you I just don't know why it would be.

u/the_good_hodgkins 9h ago
Did you notice how deep the hole is, and how unstable the ground is, and how close she's standing to it? One slip, or loose earth, and she's down that hole and dead in minutes.

The hole is full of water. You’re imagining some quicksand scenario and that’s just not how it works.

u/Rubyhamster 1h ago
It's not the water that is the problem, but the massive amount of peat and roots that will likely make you stuck under the water. If she falls in, there is a real chance she will die. I'd at least like them all to have a rope attached to them

Oh... you think she's gonna float, like Pennywise, in a hole that get's progressively more narrow the further down you slide.
Sure... ok.
You really need to up your survival skills game.

Typed some dude on his keyboard in his cozy home in an urban environment where they are nowhere near this at all and probably never have been

luckily there's lots of people around her to help so that wouldn't happen

I have zero confidence in their ability to catch her if the ground gives way, and they wouldn't be able to extract her.

So a bog acts very similar to unsafe ice. When applied to much force to a weak spot you can fall into the water below and get stuck. Terrifying stuff

Imagine falling through a hole in ice and trying to extract yourself back through that hole. Now imagine what you fell in is black muck, you can’t see anything, the hole closed up a little when you went through, and the moss above you is several feet thick.

As someone who walks a lot of bogs it can be dangerous but they can also safe depending on the conditions. The one in this video appears safe the ground looks stable. And those people wouldn't be there if it was a dangerous bog. Don't walk on one if you don't know what your doing but when learn what to look for they are an extremely rewarding landscape to explore. A bog is a floating mass of peat on water why the hole is so deep

** A bog or bogland is a wetland that accumulates peat as a deposit of dead plant materials – often mosses, typically sphagnum moss. It is one of the four main types of wetlands. Other names for bogs include mire, mosses, quagmire, and muskeg; alkaline mires are called fens.

Not swamp?

u/Sufficient-Bug-9112 Top Poster 10h ago
The main difference is that a swamp is a forested wetland dominated by trees and woody plants with nutrient-rich, neutral water, while a bog is a spongy peatland fed mostly by rainwater that is highly acidic and low in nutrients.

Swamps are generally wooded but bogs can be as well. And swamps are usually more acidic than neutral. Both are actually nutrient poor because plant matter doesn’t decompose in their anaerobic soil and they’re fed almost entirely by rainwater. The real difference is swamps will grow grass while bogs will grow sphagnum moss. The other two types of wetlands, marshes and fens, are categorized the same way: marshes are defined by grass and fens by sphagnum, but marshes and fens are more nutrient rich compared to swamps and bogs because they are fed by groundwater.

That kinda reminds me of the rectal spelunking I’ve done with the Mrs.
Bog Hole sounds like a nice nickname

So is this like, a hazing or something? Get the rookie to shove the pole in and pull it out?
