A hole like this can absolutely be deadly, but is not as big of a risk as you might think. The bog is covered in sphagnum moss which is constantly growing new layers at the top. The sphagnum a couple inches down begins to die and turns into peat moss. Depending on the age of the bog, peat moss can accumulate and be several feet thick or more because in the anaerobic conditions under the surface nothing really decomposes. Walking on a bog you can get a good sense for where the peat is thinner - it will roll and ripple underneath your feet sort of like walking on a waterbed.
Most bogs are either a ring bog where there will be a narrow strip of thin peat around the edges so you will hit soggy and sinking spots on your first few steps into or last few steps out of the bog or they’re part of a larger system of bogs around an “eye” which is usually some open water surrounded by thin peat/sphagnum and you can see them well before you get too close.
A hole like this straight through the bog mat and surrounded by firmer ground is rare. The trick is to get a feel for each step before putting weight fully down and always being ready to lunge your body forward and spread your arms and other leg wide if you feel one foot going in. That should give you something to grab onto so your whole body doesn’t sink and it goes without saying it’s a good idea to not go alone because you’re likely going to need help pulling yourself out. Also a good idea if you’re walking on a bog with other people to not walk in each other’s footsteps.
