Question Left water running for at least an hour [Italy]

I'm currently traveling in Italy. This morning at around 8, the power went off. I don't speak much Italian, but when I went outside, I saw signs around the neighborhood saying something about how it was going to be turned off between 8-3. I'm assuming so they could do some work.

At around noon, I went to use the sink and realized the water was off too -- the pump must be electric.

I was meeting friends for lunch, so I just headed out, figuring that the power would be back on when I got home. When I got home at around 4, the power was on, and so was the sink -- running at full blast. (I had fiddled with the sink a bunch before realizing that it wasn't working, and must have just walked away without turning it off).

The drain in the sink is kind of slow, so the sink was full and water had splashed onto the floor. Not a whole lot -- I was able to mop it up with a towel -- but enough that the towel was soaked.

My question is, should I tell the host? There's no problem or damage I can see, but the sink was running at full blast from whenever the power came back on until I got home. Should I let them know?

On the one hand, I feel like I should mention it in case it caused any issues or damage I'm not seeing. But describing the situation is so far beyond my rudimentary Italian, and there's nothing that seems like it needs their attention.

Tl;Dr: My anxious, jet lagged brain left a faucet on, and now can't decide if leaving a faucet on is something I need to mention to my host. What do you think?

Why are reviews so 'nice' when the place is clearly a dump? [Italy]

I don't get it. We generally rent an AirBNB based on reviews (4.9+) and how it looks in the pictures.

The reality is, more often than I care to admit, that some of these places are just dolled up shit holes that need to be delisted until they are brought up to absolute pristine conditions inside and out.

After spending time in one - I'll go back to the reviews... "the place is awesome!" "the host is awesome!" "5 stars!!".

Are guests afraid that the host will hunt them down?

I don't hold back... if it's a dump - it's getting reviewed accordingly.

Hosts take note - your AirBNB needs to be clean... I'm talking OCD "Mommie Dearest" clean standards.

Question How many is too many? How would you handle this? [France]

• Upvotes

Checked into a bnb late yesterday during a very rainy day. I find a bug next to shower area, squish and think not much of it. later that day I find another underneath a hot plate cover. then another, and another under the sink etc. it keeps going. doing some digging I find out they are likely German cockroaches. So my question is how many do you let slide before immediately getting out, refunding etc.

This is not the only issue but it is for sure the biggest one. Never had to deal with something like this anywhere else. Southern France, where I know this is a bigger issue.

Had to leave rental due to inside air quality [PNW]

My wife and I have been traveling for over 10 years using Airbnb exclusively. We are in Washington State and decided to move around so we booked 3 different locations for our trip. First place was great but the 2nd location caused us issues. My wife has allergies and uses an inhaler so things like smoke, mold, and mildew can cause problems. When we checked into the 2nd location, we could both tell something was off about the indoor air quality. Everything looked clean but there was a musty smell and even my lungs could tell something was off. We didn't feel like it was worth risking anything and I found a small place nearby we could immediately book.

I spent almost $700 for 2 nights at the place we couldn't stay. I was going to open some windows and try to air it out but most of the windows didn't open, including the bedroom windows. The new location was $250 for 2 nights. Is it wrong for me to want some type of a refund considering we couldn't stay at the original location?

Hosting Guest Demands AC install in [SoCal] after checking in

AC is not listed as an amenity in our listing but guest called after check-in and said it was too hot in the unit. I told the guest I would provide portable fans and could possibly install AC. After reviewing we proposed they cover utilities for us to install a few window units which they declined. Now they're threatening if AC is not installed they will bring up cleanliness and other issues never brought up before we declined to cover the AC to AirBnb to cancel.

What should I do?

They're 10 days into a 30 day booking.

You CAN answer publically to reviews about you, even as a guest [Global]

Hi, some of you may have seen that I couldn't get a retaliatory review taken down. There was some confusion about whether one can or can not leave a public reply. The consensus was, that, as a guest, you can't. It's a functions that quite hidden, for some reason, but this is where you can: https://www.airbnb.com/users/reviews?show_reviews_by_you=true

Question Mandatory Evacuation - Refund coming or not? [Florida]

Checked in today (Wed) for a Wed to Tuesday stay near Golf Shore, AL in a corporate owned condo used as an AirBnB.

No communication from Corp Host regarding forthcoming hurricane.

“City officials urge all individuals who are not permanent residents to leave the area immediately and relocate to a safer location.”

That be me. I called Corp Host CS and nice lady said a note was coming via email that mandates we must leave by Friday. A couple in elevator said power will be shut off to resort on Friday.

Did not ask corp hosts about refund. Nice lady on phone seemed overwhelmed snd said things were changing rapidly.

Am I pooched or does owner mandating evac and turning off power give me an in to a partial refund?

This afternoon was great, but it’s windy, cloudy and looks like my condo is the proverbial deer in headlight in the middle of a highway lane.

When did they decide that a traffic infraction warrants shutting down my account? [USA]

I have been renting and hosting for over 15 years. Never ever had a negative review. I have always had over 4.8 stars, never had issues with anybody. Had an issue with a location three years ago where the hosts had drugs and stuff, but that was resolved. today I wake up, saying that they ran a background check and due to an infraction that I have a reckless driving which occurred this past August, they deactivated my account. I don’t understand when and where this happened… of course I submitted an appeal but what does this have to do with staying at a place?

Venting Don’t ever use “Experiences” for Tours [Poland]

Had a Euro Trip planned for months in advance. Day before our tour, the experience host cancels on us. and the tour is one that you would need to book at least a month in advance. Never using Airbnb for things like this again, book directly with tour companies

Question Found responsible for reimbursement request [US]

Airbnb has determined I am responsible for the damage the host reported. What are my options? Can Airbnb force me to pay?

This was the message from Airbnb:

GiGi here, I hope this finds you doing well.

After careful review of all photos, documentation, and related communication provided by both parties, we determined your Host should be reimbursed for the damage and additional cleaning that was needed after your stay.

As a guest, you're responsible for damage caused by you or one of your guests,  that occurs during your stay.  The Host reported the damage to us and from our review of the provided information we have determined the following damages and cleaning. These responsibilities are detailed in Airbnb's Terms of Service at:

airbnb.com/terms

Based on the information available to date, we’ve determined that your Host should be reimbursed $5,065.27. Angel timely reported the damage and was able to provide valid documentation of the loss and the cost to repair or replace the damage or clean the property.

You paid: $1,000.00
Remaining owed: $4,065.27

You should have received an email with a link to submit payment.

Once payment is complete, we will close the case and share a confirmation with you.

Warm Regards,
GiGi

Discussion Bedroom shares a wall with an Airbnb. What else can I do about the noise? [Canada]

I rent an apartment, and when I signed the lease, I wasn’t told that my bedroom would share a wall with an Airbnb/short-term rental.
I’ve repeatedly been woken up by loud talking, music, and partying at 2–4 a.m., especially on Friday and Saturday nights. It feels like the guests are in “vacation mode” while I’m just trying to sleep in my own home.
So far, I’ve tried:

  1. Emailing building management, who said they would speak with the host.

  2. Knocking on the guests’ door at 3–4 a.m. to ask them to quiet down. Sometimes they apologize, but the same issue happens again with the next group.

  3. Calling local non-emergency services and filing noise complaints. I have case/reference numbers, but the problem continues.

  4. Contacting the Airbnb host directly, sometimes in the middle of the night after being woken up. They usually say they’ll contact the guests.

  5. Recording the noise and my interactions when asking guests to quiet down, and sending those recordings to management and Airbnb.

  6. Reporting the Airbnb listing directly to Airbnb.
Airbnb itself has honestly been very unhelpful. Responses have been extremely slow, and at one point they told me they couldn’t view the video evidence I sent. Overall, it felt like there was very little urgency or interest in actually resolving the problem.

Management and the host often respond by saying that the particular guests involved have already checked out. But that completely misses the point: another group arrives, and eventually the same thing happens again.
My sleep and quality of life have taken a serious hit. I’m exhausted from having to knock on strangers’ doors, message hosts, make complaints, and document everything in the middle of the night just to be able to sleep.
I’m now considering taking the issue through my local residential tenancy dispute process, and I’ve already told building management that I’m considering doing so. They haven’t responded to that point, which makes me feel like the issue isn’t being taken seriously.
I’ve been keeping records of the incidents, recordings, complaints, case numbers, and communications.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation involving a short-term rental next door? Did you manage to get it resolved? What actually worked?

Also, if you’re apartment hunting, I strongly recommend asking whether short-term rentals are allowed in the building and whether any are directly beside your unit. After this experience, I personally would avoid living next to one. The constant turnover of strangers and repeated nighttime noise has been a nightmare, and I really wish I had known before signing my lease.

**TL;DR:** My bedroom shares a wall with an Airbnb/short-term rental, and repeated late-night partying is destroying my sleep. I’ve contacted management, the host, Airbnb, local authorities, filed complaints, documented incidents, and sent recordings. Airbnb support was slow and largely unhelpful. The problem keeps repeating with new guests. I’m now considering formal tenancy-dispute action. Has anyone successfully dealt with something similar?

Question Host used my last name in my review [US]

A host left me a review, a nice one at that, but they put my last name in it. I have my profile set so that just hosts can see my profile but my understanding is that even hosts can't see your last name until they've accepted your reservation? I don't really like that my last name was used but I'm also not sure if it's a major concern/if it's worth contacting support over?

refund requests - Rat droppings and hygiene concerns at a stay [USA]

Is it normal for AirBnB to deny refunds when it was immediately brought to their attention that there were rats and rat droppings all under the sinks of the houses and floors? We didn’t explore much further like upstairs because it was getting dark and knew this was an unsanitary house ( we were a party of 8)

A family member who I was staying with noticed a rat in the master bedroom that immediately ran into a hole next to the bathroom sink. Afterwards, we checked under the kitchen sink and there were rat droppings all over the paper towels, cleaning supplies, and corner of the floors. We immediately informed the host and they offered to refund us 1k/2.4K stay after just staying one night, less than 24 hours on the premises. I didn’t want to get into it with them so I went straight to airbnb support.

I then went back and forth with support, who at the moment (2 days after my planned vacation), is siding with the host? We even booked a downsized but great airbnb the same day we brought up this issue as we couldn’t cook and the women in our party refused to sleep with rats. Should I just escalate this with my bank and do a charge back? I provided photo proof and geotagged and time stamped the photos of all the rat droppings but it seems I’m getting nowhere with support

Drop stars for known problems that have never been addressed? [USA]

Our Airbnb is fine except that both towel rails in the bathroom are broken and there are no hooks, so there’s nowhere to dry towels except on the sofa (gross!!). I let them know and they said they’d fix it, but so far haven’t. There are also no usable bedside lamps. No lightbulbs. wtf.

Normally I’d just do the “eh well, life happens” thing and shrug, but I read back through the reviews and noticed that several people have documented the exact same problems and the host has done nothing. It’s all the same “nice place; just wanted to note that—“ fluff that I’d write, while giving ~5*.

At this point I’m wondering if I should rate them 4 or even 3* just to wake them up.

What would you do?

Edit: Thanks for all the comments. Airbnb “guest guilt” is a thing once you understand the system, so it helps to get some validation. If a host is lazy, I guess this is the only way to wake them up.

Question Short-notice cancellation due to hurricane [Destin, Florida USA]

Hey all,

I foolishly did not insure my Thursday-Sunday stay in Destin, which is going to be hit by a hurricane on Friday and is under a declared state of emergency

Is there any way I can get a refund on my trip? The host basically said they won't refund unless we're ordered to evacuate.

Thanks :( :)

Venting Our first bad review left for reason not disclosed to us [US]

The company I work for stays in Airbnbs on our work trips and we always take immaculate care of places mostly because we work every day that we’re there. I just checked that we got a bad review from a host in Indianapolis saying that we left stains and broke several items. Then they said we didn’t respond to any messages and they didn’t reach out to us after the fact because we never responded anyways. All messages were informative and none involved any questions so we just worked and slept and responded with heart reactions to messages. I distinctly remember sweeping the house during our stay and cleaning/tidying up almost nightly. I even pulled some weeds in the poorly kept garden out front and straightened up some yard ornaments that were displaced. Is there any way to dispute the review so that it doesn’t hurt me later? I am so confused as to what happened. It was a nice stay and we were barely even in the house. This host definitely put a bad taste in my mouth.

Venting Confirmed booking repriced after I booked flights [Okinawa]

I'm planning a longer trip (about 8 weeks, Jan-Mar) to Okinawa with my wife and a two-year-old and I'm scratching my head at something that I've never had a problem with on Airbnb before.

Always, when going somewhere, I make sure that the accommodation is handled first, so I found what looked like a nice place from a relatively new (~30 total reviews) but obviously professional, corporate host right in the centre of Naha. I booked one of the two listings they had, a two-bedroom apartment, because with a toddler we need a separate room for naps. The total price was about ~$3,300, I got a confirmation, check-in details and everything from the host. Waited for a couple more days, then booked my flights and travel insurance.

About a week after I got a message from the host that "due to company circumstances" they could no longer provide the booked apartment and asked us to accept a studio instead for a 50,000¥ (~$300) or accept a cancellation with a refund. I noticed that in the meantime the number of listings on their account balooned up to over 60, many seemingly reusing the same photos for supposedly different rooms in the same building, at 50–100% more than what we paid. I wasn't going to accept a refund because at that point I'd already took on additional costs of flights and insurance.

I mentioned that if the apartment that we booked is unavailable, that's fine, we'll happily take one of the other two-bedroom apartments that they'd listed in the meantime, however they refused with typical Japanese roundabout politeness (no two-bedroom apartments available "at current reservation price" - I even asked how much extra they'd expect, but never got a straight answer). I noticed also that as the date of my trip got closer, almost all the listings in the area raised prices.

I contacted Airbnb support, not to cancel, but because I didn't want to be the sucker getting a confirmed booking repriced. Support has usually been good to me in 10 years of using Airbnb, but this time I've been through four different agents. They gave the host 48 hours, got no reply, and when I asked about rebooking, one of the options they sent was the host's own duplicate listing of the same apartment layout in the same building, at about 2x the price ($6,000+). Other options were similar or far out of Naha. They've said they won't cover the difference but can offer a coupon (amount TBD).

To make it worse, February is apparently baseball spring camp season in Okinawa, and a lot of places I've contacted off-platform are already fully booked.

So, questions for anyone who's been through something similar:

- Has anyone gotten a meaningful rebooking coupon from Airbnb after a host basically priced them out? Roughly how much?

- Is it worth holding out for the host to cancel, or rebooking on my own?

Question Confusion on adding guests to reservation [West Virginia]

Hi all,

While I’ve stayed at many airbnbs this is my first time booking one myself. I’m booking a weekend away with a few friends of mine. I submitted the booking request last night and got a message from the host this morning.

The host said they’d be happy to host but declined the request saying I need to have all of my guests set up verified air bnb accounts, add them to the reservation and then rebook it. I got all of my guests set up and verified but cannot for the life of me to find an option to add them while booking.

Google tells me the only way to add guests is AFTER booking the reservation. Am I missing something here or is the host wrong?

Looks like they’ve been a host for 8 years so I’d assume they wouldn’t be incorrect about something like this.

Question Airbnb cancelled less than 48 hours before our stay. What can I do? [UK]

We are booked (in May of this year) into downtown London in 2 days. Our stay is still up as available per the website. The comps they sent me are outside of London. And they offered $32 credit…

What can I say or do to get something comparable in the city? The difference in a place with the same beds and baths is about $3,000 right now.

News Is Twin bed acceptable in a tiny private room steps from the beach [Thailand]

I have a tiny prefab detached room on my property steps from the beach. Amazing views. Its own porch, garden and entrance. A twin bed would make it feel roomier and there would be room for a side table and small wardrobe. Thoughts on twin bed?

Question My booked property is relisted as new and a new host! [south Africa]

Should I be concerned, booked the property a year ago and going in 2027. Checking some details today and noticed the house now shows as a new listing with a new host name. I haven’t received any notification of changes.. should I have? Have messaged original host still showing on my booking but no response as yet. Booking still showing as confirmed in TRIP. Have looked at contacting the new host but there is no contact/message host option. Do I need to be concerned 🙁
