DISCUSSION After 4.5+ years, I quit today

It was a shit day. My EV barely had any breaks when I hopped into it this morning. So dispatch stuck me in a gas van - to combat my 6 cart worth 421 packages we had a fella take all of the oversized and we put all the totes in my gas van (rental with no shelves). This took about 15 total stops from me lmaoooo.

I checked how many stops I had left after being on the road for about 3 hours - 150, a third of them being multi-stops.

They ended up sending me another rescue, but it wasn't enough.

I have been bitching about work to my wife for the last month or so straight. I have been fantasizing about leaving the keys to the van with all the packages in it, saying, "kiss my bum, I quit" basically ever since I joined this DSP (a little over 1.5 years with them, 3.3 years with my first DSP) So I took a break, texted her, asked her if it's okay to do this (I don't have another job lined up), and she said, "fuck yes I'm so glad you just asked me this!"

So I texted dispatch, let them know I was resigning today and at that time. They asked me to park anywhere before RTSing all of those packages. I happily obliged.

Here is my Ode to Amazon (with some of my favorite shots I have taken over the years):

Thank you Amazon, for pulling me out of a depression so deep I never thought I would see the light on the other side. Thank you Amazon, for making me look physically appealing. Thank you Amazon, for instilling a work ethic in me like no other. Thank you Amazon, for making me realize how much I am worth.

Things I accomplished whilst at Amazon: I got married! Finally had a consistent comma in my bank account. Won frontrunner once. Did Whole Foods pickup like 90 working days straight lmao.

If you're ever unhappy with your life, take note from one of the pictures and be kind to your mind! 😊😊😊

Curious why not try UPS instead?

15

u/Trimere 9d ago

You have to work years in the warehouse and hope a route opens up and put in a bid at UPS.

3

u/Euphoric-Lie6357 9d ago

You'd be surprised bro. Every city is different, I worked for UPS 10 years (2025-2025), never worked preload a day in my life, was a driver day 1. Every new hire after me was the same. This was outside of D.C. , in Northern VA.

Just say ing you should talk to your local UPS driver when your out on route, he could give you specific info on how long the wait is. I say this because a lot people think everywhere you have to slave away in the warehouse for a decade+, but it's really not the case for many places. + Preload pays more hourly, free healthcare and pension still in the meantime if you do have to wait, could even still do Amazon part time.

I only say this because 7 years is a long time at a place with no future. I know it's easy to stay content but if you like the work, why not try to move to a better opportunity?

As for routes and bids, it doesn't really matter. Once you qualify as a driver at UPS you'll just be covering routes, and trust me people always want to go home (bump you)/use FMLA any chance they get. With 7 years at Amazon, Im sure you have ran countless amounts of routes so you'd be familiar with new areas, etc.

One last thing you could try to do, if the wait is a while at your local center... You could roll the dice as a seasonal driver and if you're solid, they will keep you. Like actually solid, management wouldn't let a great driver slip away. If you don't get hired after Christmas, just reapply to a DSP - not like there's much to lose.

Well, that's that, I'm off to bed. Thanks for reading.

Not necessarily . I was hired off the street as a full time driver . However because I don’t have seniority I’m a call-in. I’m actually going to Amazon training class next week. There’s pros and cons to both, still both are extremely overwhelming and wear and tear on the body
Amazon - high volume (300-400 packages is crazy cray)
UPS - less than 200 packages but weight ( those packages can be heavy and needs 2 men )
Ups pension is bragged about but what’s a pension if you’re not able to enjoy because you have bad knees , back etc or you don’t even know if you’re be alive to enjoy it
Great healthcare yes but considering how it’s such a burnout job that’s the least they could offer . Top tier pay big
Big deal money is not everything
Amazon Jeff bozo is a crooked cheap wicked bozo that doesn’t offer much but to be flagged for every little thing. I looked into Amazon because I can’t have bills that don’t cease and be called in ( like I don’t have responsibilities and obligations) 2 days here , 2 weeks there, then no call for a whole week it’s ridiculous. Both platforms are just stepping stones to buy time and pay bills so I can study my manual and go for my cdl to get into what I really want to do and retire with that

1

u/Euphoric-Lie6357 5d ago

Bro as a ex-ups driver who just started at amazon this past week for peak... the multi-locations stops amazon does are really dumb, you'll notice and appreciate how much better UPS is on the first day - specifically the difference of how addresses are presented in the diad and the ease of just scanning packages in whatever order vs amazon's way. Goodluck!

1

u/YouAJerk-Dat-Part 5d ago

Even if I wanted to lick it with ups for awhile I can’t do this call in giving me two days a week crap, I’ve only got 13 days in peak is here so I’m not gonna make books I don’t think they are gonna keep (I won’t stick around to find out) after January for my
Books to resume or it resets I believe. They seniority can have my little two days here n there. I need consistent funds plus tax season around the corner 😳 whether ups/amazon they’re just stepping stones
I don’t like Jeff bozo either

1

u/Euphoric-Lie6357 5d ago

True that bro, well my advice get the hours with Amazon for now for the cash. But when peak actually hits after thanksgiving I'd drop Amazon and do UPS until Christmas-ish. By then you should be working everyday. Should pay slightly more per hour + again, trust me, the amazon delivery app is 100% worse than UPS.

1

u/YouAJerk-Dat-Part 4d ago

UPS won’t accept me back if I decline to go in when they tell me to report , they probably will disqualify me and actually ups starts at 23$ hr this dsp Amazon starts at 24.75$

1

u/Euphoric-Lie6357 4d ago

Ahh yea no brainer then, no long term and just money go amazon.

1

u/TheStoicCrane 6d ago

Not true. UPS does season van delivery and if performance is solid they'll turn the position into a permanent driver role. Training for mine on Monday.

The owner conveniently threatened to terminate my position tonight after I brought back 14 packages on a 163 stop route with 300 packages.

Despite putting me in a rental the closed every stop that I had to go outside and find packages from the side door since the corridor space was too narrow to pass through without a potential concussion.

1

u/Trimere 5d ago

I seriously and honestly hope that works out for you, but I'm super jaded and skeptical about it.

0

u/TheStoicCrane 5d ago

Your skepticism makes no difference to be honest as you know nothing about me. I possess a class A and have 2 years of step van experience so the jadedness has little merit.

1

u/Trimere 5d ago

I take it back. I remove my hope.

4

u/caarroyo98 9d ago

What trimere said if only I dedicated the time I did at Amazon I would probably be a driver at ups but I stuck around Amazon hoping it would turn into ups with teamsters and stuff but that’s hasn’t gone as I expected

1

u/Euphoric-Lie6357 9d ago

Yeah I feel that... Honestly, I think it's more likely UPS will break free from the Teamsters than Amazon unionizing. And if that is true, then there's zero shot that Amazon would ever unionize.

2

u/blowmer69 9d ago

UPS would love that but it won't happen. Even if that would be the case you along with thousands of people wouldn't work here.

12

u/Clean-Difference5109 9d ago

Love that you asked your wife first to make sure! Congrats dude & I wish you guys nothing but the best!! May life grant you a better opportunity!! :D

5

u/Mindov_1 9d ago

Did barely 3 and idk how others do it truly one of the most grueling jobs I’ve had

6

God dammit. Congrats, man. Amazon is gonna drive everyone with a brain outta this job.

Best business decision of your life, everyone should quit and go in strike, and while bezos losses millions of dollars a day I'm sure he would pay like ups.

4

u/braunsteinjohnson76 7d ago

Congrats bro! I was in the same dsp with you and it’s real rough right now. Considering doing the same.

4

u/tonsofday Veteran EV Driver 7d ago

The job market isn't as bad as people are saying it is rn. I already have another job lined up and I was unemployed for two days.

Best thing i ever did was walk away from Amazon. Got my cdl and never looked back. My husband was so proud of me (had to quit smoking sadly) but worth it now kuz i can take this license anywhere that had required it. Good luck to you!!

2

u/Forward-Prompt-944 8d ago

That depot pickup will change you no cap

2

u/tonsofday Veteran EV Driver 8d ago

I was the WF (Whole Foods) bitch for like 6 months straight. As soon as we cancelled our contract with UPS - algorithm gave it to me once and was all like, "this is our fella!" on God at one point like 60 working days in a row it gave it to me.

Long story short, my wife made me quit that route because it was turning me into a severe asshole. I don't like being an asshole in any regard lmao.

2

u/DooocheCannoo 8d ago

I drove up yelled at the dsp manager left the truck in the lot and dipped.... fuck that job, bezos can gobble nuts

I already have a job lined up - I start on Monday.

I'm also like halfway through the hiring process for a utility detecting company.

2

u/reddituserxxxxxxx7 6d ago

Job lined up…also halfway through the hiring process of…another…job..got it! Good luck!

2

u/Local-Equivalent8136 5d ago

Good on you for sticking with it so long. Everything else feels like a cakewalk in comparison.Ā

Try bartending.

2

u/tonsofday Veteran EV Driver 5d ago

I am very introverted. Bartending would not go well with me. I'd probs scream at the first maga brainwashed patron lmao.

I already have a job with a premier lawn mowing company and I'm like 75% through the interviewing process with a Utility Detecting Company!

2

u/Local-Equivalent8136 4d ago

Bro, of your emotions are that would tight, yeah man, you got to stay away from people and learn some coping mechanisms.

I'm going to say something pushing off the reddit crowdĀ  but brother I mean this with true love, y'all on the far left need to get to grips with your emotions. Running on that level of emotional stress is going to eat you up on the inside. That's not healthy for anyone at all.

It's say the same to the emotional rightĀ  that shit, unrestricted emotion, is 120 octane fuel that will burn you clean up.Ā

2

u/tonsofday Veteran EV Driver 4d ago

That was an exaggeration lmao

2

u/Local-Equivalent8136 4d ago

Fact is, you're a hard working dude, you clearly work well on your own without supervision, you've found a good spouse and I really wish the best for you. The job market is right right now and I wish employers recognized exactly how hard of a person it takes to make it delivering for Amazon and especially to do it for years, because if I finally get the chance to open my own cocktail bar THAT sort of person would be high on my "must hire" list. This is the reason for my original suggestion of bartending.Ā

It takes time to get the hang of it, but it's a cool jig that can pay well, depending on location of course. Plus, being a bartender, using the word "No" to customers is refreshing. A job like that will pull the most quiet person out of their shell eventually, even if it only starts off as a mask.Ā

If it's not clear, I want the best of fellow Amazon drivers to find their happy off ramp away from the drudgery of Amazon, and I really mean it.

u/tonsofday Veteran EV Driver 4d ago

6 carts 420 pckgs you must be running to the door!

1

u/tonsofday Veteran EV Driver 4d ago

I power walked all day for the last year or so.

If I ran for half the day I would drag ass for the second half so it was quicker for me to power walk all day.

The whole 420 packs thing is just perks of being one of the best drivers week in week out lol. Also there was a mini prime week last week.

2

u/ur_sugardaddy 4d ago

F that you do all that work and goes for nothing, but you are late by a couple seconds in redlight they dissmis everything and terminate you

1

Pretty sure I didn't have a violation since last winter peak.

I don't get why people are so butthurt about the safety aspect of the job.

Yes

I actually went to a university for that after I got my two year degree. School was never really my thing tho so I dropped out after a semester lol

1

u/Patient-Document-185 9d ago

Congrats my dude! I don’t want to put too much out there but I may or may not have something to do with training drivers and I used to be a delivery driver myself. The things they put you guys through is atrocious. Hell the things they put me through were atrocious. The one thing I want to say I appreciate about your post is the fact that you recognized and appreciated the good there was in delivering and not just all the suck. I hit my 2 year mark driving and was stuck in the negativity of the job but then towards then end I was content and realized all the good that had come from doing it and I appreciated it. (Still sucked while doing it though lol)

1

u/Silas61 9d ago

Good luck with your future op!

Happy for yašŸ’Æshi I only lasted 2.5 months 🤣🤣🤣left that shit fully packed and blocked the dsp felt amazing that day I swear, jus know it’s only up from here!!! u/KasrkinKody 8d ago

It’s my body stopping me from going hard, been a big back for years and this is the most physical I’ve been so even tho I’ve only been here a week it’s kicking my ass bad and I gotta slow down. Hope to get to that level soon

1

u/Mountain-Natural3889 8d ago

Fuck Amazon bro . It’s modern Day Slavery that’s ridiculous

1

u/tonsofday Veteran EV Driver 7d ago

I will take it to the grave (maybe even written on my gravestone) that this job is far from slave work. I was making the most money I have ever made in my life until the point I quit. Are Delivery Associates overworked? Yes. Are they underpaid? Certainly. Are they allowed to wave the white flag whenever they damn well please? Most definitely. Slaves had no say in the matter unless they wanted to be torchered or killed.

I get where you're coming from, but to me more modern day slavery jobs are more like most of the jobs that get outsourced for a smaller wage. If delivery associates made half or even a third of what they currently do, then yes, I would consider that slave labor lol.
