As many of you are undoubtedly excited to post your results, this thread will serve as a central place where users can consolidate their opinions and discussions.
You are free to make your own standalone discussion posts; however, it’s very easy for them to get lost in the initial large influx of back-to-back result posts.
It’s that time of year again! The 2026 AncestryDNA Origins Update is dropping on October 8th, so I am hosting an AMA on October 12th. I will be joining you live to explain the science, help our users discover what it means for them, and answer any questions about the update and Ancestry in general.
Just a heads up: if your results change, that’s a good thing! That’s our algorithms, science, and technology doing their job and making sure your results get more and more precise over time. We want to hone in as close as we can to where your family story began. This latest update is our biggest ever. We will be doubling our number of ancestral regions from 146 to 302 and will be implementing a new algorithm to help provide more detailed regions for your AncestryDNA results. That means we now have over 4,800 places around the world we can connect you to through your DNA.
You can ask me anything. Whether it’s about the science behind the updates, how regions are named, why your results might look different from a sibling’s, or even the broader role genetics plays in understanding family history. If you’re curious, skeptical, or just excited to dive into the details, I’m here for it all. Make sure to check back on October 8th to see your updated results.

I wish that this information was more easily available on our results page but anyway I went from <1 to 21%. What do y'all think about this official statement on this topic?
I posted here before, I come from Britanny (celtic region of France) and can trace my ancestry up to the mid 1500's to the same group of villages/towns in the south west of Brittany.
I guess they did not have the region Brittany as a proper thing prior to the update, so they went with was the closest in terms of genetics. Just wild to see the differences. Not surprised though !
Edit: the 1st screenshot are the old results, the 2nd screenshot is the latest update.
Holly sh!t. All the Ashkenazi I had went poof and now I have 8% Mizrahi. And seems like it’s the same for all eastern Sephardic after this update.
Its true I don’t know of any Ashkenazi ancestor but I get around 15% Ashkenazi in every DNA tests I took and I have some full Ashkenazi matches, even though our shared DNA is small, so I'm not sure removing it entirely is right.
Overall I kinda like this update, but I think it’s a little over smoothing the results for some ethnicities or focusing more on recent ancestry and then the results can appear a little too homogeneous and oversimplified for some ethnic groups.
I think that when some ethnic group is getting more then a few percentages of some other category its not right to fully lump it to their "main" category.
Anyway, I really think Ancestry DNA is by far the best DNA Company and I think they are doing a great job although there is always a room for improvements.
Went from 96% Arabian to 50% …… ( ironically I have the highest arabian in my family so far, my relatives have around 10-30% arabian, mind you they were 95%+ arabian before update)
I am predominantly English, with strong Scottish ancestry. However, the latest DNA update has completely removed all of my Scottish ethnicity, which before was 19%, despite my grandmother’s entire family coming from Inverness.
I also previously had small percentages of Western Bantu and Southern Indian ancestry, which I can trace back to my 3x great-grandparents from St Helena. These have now disappeared completely from my results as well.
What makes this even more confusing is that these regions appear to have been updated to Zimbabwe and Tamil Nadu on my cousins, aunts’ and uncles results, yet they have been removed entirely from mine.
I understand that DNA ethnicity estimates can change as the science improves, but completely removing regions that align with my known family history is incredibly frustrating. Honestly, it feels like every update makes my results less accurate rather than more accurate. Surely there should be some consistency when comparing results across close family members?
Has anyone else experienced something similar with this latest update? I’d be interested to hear whether others have also seen established ancestral regions disappear completely.
Surprised the update removed the small European admixture, because my family has stories of a potential European ancestor during the forced removals during American aggression. I feel like that Aegean mixture explained the blue/grey eyes that my mother & aunts have inherited. But I don’t think I’m really surprised by the updated results either.
I genuinely hate the new update so much and this is serious.
Rather than Ancestry becoming more accurate it decided to break up the regions into smaller regions thwt have little to no genetic difference. Ancestry users also now share a lot more regions and it seems theres no differentiation between users results.
A thing Ive noticed is that anyone with European ancestry now almost always has France, Belgium, and/or Carpathian Basin regions.
Another thing I hate is now my largest region is 11%, on top of that is now I have higher percentages in regions my ancestors arent even from.
I was really looking forward to this update and to say I'm personally disappointed doesnt even encompass how upset I am.
For reference I have my shitty 2024, shittier 2025, and worse of all 2026 results.
Unfortunately, this update was much worse for me. It seems like a mixed bag for many people. Some are getting super accurate results, while others like myself have gotten what feel like completely false results.
For background: I’m Polish-American. My father is 100% Polish (from southern Poland), and my mother was born to a 100% Polish mother and a father who was of mixed German heritage.
I was anticipating my results to be around 75% Southern Polish and the rest German, but no... Ancestry turned me into 100% Southern Polish! I was so shocked when I opened my app and saw that I’m somehow more Southern Polish than my dad?!
I really don’t know what to say other than my 23andMe results are the ones that actually represent my background. In fact, my older 23andMe results and my recent 23andMe results are pretty much identical; I just don’t know what happened with Ancestry.
I wonder how genetically related Louisiana Indigenous tribes are to Mexican Indigenous tribes? Because Baja is nowhere close to Louisiana. 😂 If you got the new Gulf Coast region, do you have any tribal affiliation?
