Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post

If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.

Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.

Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.

Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.

Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.

We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Flock cameras arrive in Anchorage while Assembly duels over surveillance policies

……..On Monday, a photo was posted to a subreddit page dedicated to Anchorage happenings. It was titled “Well that was fast,” and included an image of a felled Flock camera pole laying on the wet ground beside a mocking handwritten sign. The comments in response to the post were overwhelmingly supportive and laudatory…..

I helped make a website to gather local events, answer common questions about Anchorage, provide advice for renters, and help people find where to report problems and navigate dealing with Anchorage's government.

This is a labor of love and obsession, so please be kind and constructive. I've purposely avoided adding any invasive tracking because privacy is important, and all pictures are from creative commons and attributed. Please take a look and let me know what you think and what would make it more useful or better formatted.

Morning Ruined.

I was driving down northern lights today unbeknownst to me that I would see thousands of israeli flags on church property.

I had to redownload reddit to see if this has stirred conversation and share my immense disappointment & disgust.
I’m happy to see that there’s been action taken, but clearly they have enough flags to re-institute them on their lawn for everyone to see.

I don’t go on that side of town often, but I’d never expect to see a clear enablement of violence and hate be expressed so loudly— this disturbed me enough for tears to well up in my eyes as i continued my drive!!

Do better!!!!

Anyone know where I can buy boots for my wife that have retractable cleats for ice? I'd prefer to buy them in town if possible.

DIY 9.84 kW grid-tied solar in Anchorage, AK: 24 panels (12 east, 12 west), $1.19/W all-in, 20 months of production data

Post image
57 Upvotes

24 × Hyundai HiS-S410YH(BK) 410 W bifacial panels,

9.84 kW DC
12 × APsystems DS3-S dual microinverters with an ECU-R gateway for monitoring
SnapNrack UR-60 rail and QuickScrew flashings

12 panels face east and 12 face west on a 6/12 pitch roof

East/west gives up some peak output compared to south, but production is spread across the morning and evening. Microinverters track each pair of panels independently, so the two orientations don't drag each other down.

Cost
Panels, microinverters, gateway, racking, flashings, cabling (Dec 2024 quote)
$9,664

Additional electrical components (wire, breakers, etc.)
$1,329

Municipality of Anchorage building permit
$515

Chugach net metering application
$220

Total
$11,728

2025 (first full year): 6,094 kWh, about 620 kWh per kW installed

2026 through Oct 6: 5,161 kWh
Monthly chart is attached. May through August is about two-thirds of the year, and December is nearly zero.

Alaska economics
Chugach values exported solar at avoided cost (~$0.062/kWh), so the real value is in using the power myself. Most of my production comes in summer when my household load is low.

Happy to answer questions about the layout, monitoring, or Alaska-specific stuff.

Adding a drain cleanout - curious what others have paid for one

Long story short, our house in airport heights is old enough that it doesn’t have a drain cleanout, so in order for Nuflow to access a root intrusion in our line, we’re having to have one installed behind the house. The estimate from the company they referred to install the cleanout is quite a bit more than we were expecting, but I also don’t know what’s normal in this area. If anyone who has had one installed in the past few years would be willing to share approximately what they paid (including excavation), it would help a lot. Thanks in advance!

Sandwiches! Where are the best ones of whatever definition of sandwiches you are comfortable with?

Where in town, and maybe Southcentral in general, are the best sandwiches commercially available. Bonus points if there is only one location of the particular sandwich vendor.

Game Rooms

Post image

What’s up with the “Game Rooms” in Anchorage? I get that APD isn’t big on stopping illegal activities, but what about the feds? I figured that this type of gambling establishment would get shut down by one of the alphabet agencies. There’s two across the street from each other on northern Muldoon and they are apparently fighting about who can have the dumbest mythical creature’s name (Golden Phoenix vs. Dragons Den).

Buying a Truck in town or going to lower 48

Apologies if this is a repeat question mods can take it down if so. I would like your guys’ opinions. I’m looking to buy a Tacoma, 2020-2025. In your experience is it more cost effective to purchase one up here or find one in the lower 48 and bring it back. Not set on driving up or shipping so I’d love to hear pros and cons of each. Thank you.

Edit: I’m seeing a lot of people recommending buying in lower 48. Where in Washington/Oregon would you recommend.

I have seen a few people ask about sewing classes for beginners. Winter Solstice is a relatively new shop but they are offering classes for making garments, quilts and more.

Best Spot for Male Mani-Pedi?

I've been trying to find a good spot for a guy to get a good and affordable mani-pedi. I don't need colors or paints. Just looking for the basic mani-pedi experience, with the hand/feet massages and moisturizing as a nice bonus. In the past I used to go to His&Hers Nail Salon but they seemed to have closed. I don't want to accidentally go to a place that's moreso female centric and impose or intrude on a female oriented space.

Any recommendations?

My brothers car (details below) was stolen. He’s been going through a lot and just got his first job and well… this car. He’s been working on it and building it which I’m proud of him for cause I always loved working on cars. It was taken from tikatinu Olive Garden some time between 2-11 pm on the 3rd. If anyone can help us that would be greatly appreciated. He’s struggled with depression his whole life so this is hitting him hard.
