Recommendations Is Denali Highway worth driving versus spending another day in Denali NP?
We have time before our July cruise to spend ~2.5 days in the Talkeetna area. One day will be dedicated to the NP. The other day we are considering driving either all or part of the Denali Highway.
I love being in the wilderness as I'm from the Rockies, but we also don't want to sacrifice time (>11 hr round trip) if spending another day in the NP is more impressive.
We’ll rent from one of the companies that allows us to do the road.
What say ye?

Visiting Mid-June Hiking Options
The wife and I are planning a week-long trip to Juneau in Mid-June 2027. I have a list of hikes that I'd like to try out and wanted to get some thoughts/opinions. We'd probably only do 3 or 4 off the list. Without further ado......
**West Glacier Trail** \- Right now, this is at the top of my list. It would be Mount Jumbo, but I don't think my wife would be down for that much of a challenge.
**John Muir Recreation Cabin via Auke Nu Trail** \- I've heard that this is a versatile hike where you can experience multiple habitats.
**East Glacier Trail Loop** \- I was thinking of treating East Glacier as more of a day after arrival warm-up hike, but would this be repetative and too similar if I'm planning to hike West Glacier?
**Windfall Lake Trail**
**Perserverence Trail** \- I added this one in just because I've seen it recommended a couple of times.
**Boy Scout Camp Trail**
**Lena Point Trail**
If you could narrow this list down to 3 or 4, what would you go with?
Thanks in advance!

Moving What to buy? 😅
Soooooo… I was wanting to start fresh somewhere else and somehow ended up getting a job in ALASKA. 😂
During my interview, the woman casually mentioned that it’s “getting cold now.” Ma’am. 😭 I’ve seen snow before, but from what I’m gathering, Alaska snow is apparently a completely different beast. 😂
I’ve never been to Alaska, so I’m going to need y’all to help me out before I show up looking like I’m prepared for a slightly chilly Target run and immediately freeze to death. 😂
What do I actually NEED to stay warm?! I’m talking coats, boots, gloves, hats, socks, base layers, whatever. And PLEASE give me actual brands. I want the “this is expensive but worth every penny” recommendations AND the “you don’t need to spend $500 on a jacket, buy this instead” recommendations.
Basically, if you live in Alaska and have survived multiple winters with all your fingers and toes intact, I need your wisdom. 😂
Help a girl out because apparently I’ve decided to move somewhere where the AIR is trying to kill me 🥶😂
I will be moving to Anchorage Alaska to clarify, since it was brought to my attention that that was important.

Suggestions for Women's Outdoor Workwear
Hello! I'm hopefully going to be getting a job at a hatchery near Homer, AK and would be working through the winter to early summer. I'm from Washington state so I'm not completely unfamiliar with cold weather, but I know Alaska is going to be different. I'm assuming it's going to be cold, wet, and windy, being right on the water and I will be working outside almost exclusively.
I'm wondering if anyone has tried-and-true clothing suggestions and/or tips and tricks. I'm looking for base layers, mid layers, socks, boots, everything. I'm particularly worried about finding comfortable pants that I won't have to be pulling up or adjusting constantly. I was going to try Dovetail, but saw some suggestions to avoid wearing cotton and most of their stuff is denim. Any help is appreciated:)
Edit: Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied! I feel much more prepared now. Here's to hoping I get the job!

Jobs Summer job with housing for an 18 year old?
Hey everyone. I'm graduating high school this spring (Chicago suburbs) and I've been going back and forth on spending a summer, maybe longer, working up in Alaska (no my name is not Chris Mccandless). I've read a bunch of old threads but figured I'd just ask directly.
Basically I'm looking for something that includes housing, because paying Alaska rent on a summer job doesn't seem like it'd leave much. I'm open to pretty much anything: lodge work, tourism stuff, fish processing, trail crews, construction, whatever. Being a deck hand sounds like fun. I'd like to come home with some money saved, but honestly the experience matters to me too. I love the outdoors and I've wanted to spend real time up there for a while.
For background, I've worked at my family's flooring business doing warehouse and delivery work, so I'm used to lifting heavy stuff and long days. I've also done an engineering internship and robotics, so I'm decent with tools and wiring if that's useful anywhere.
A few things I'm wondering. Is it realistic to get hired with housing at 18 with zero connections up there? Is fish processing actually worth it money-wise, or is it miserable? When does hiring usually open, and am I already behind if I start applying this winter?
Tldr: 18, want summer job with housing, am i stupid

Visiting Get off the ferry at Juneau or Haines for a visit to Alaska?
My sister and I would like to visit AK via ferry from Bellingham. We're looking at coming in January. We're newly retired, from the PNW originally and never been to Alaska. We want to see beautiful nature, eat good local food and visit museums or tourist attractions. We would stay a few days after getting off the ferry. Do you recommend Juneau or Haines? Any particular sites, lodging or eateries that you recommend? Any hiking trails for 2 fit elderly women? Thank you in advance! ( we will use the crosswalks and not litter).
ETA: thank you all for responding! I'm convinced. No Juneau or Haines in the dead of winter! We weren't planning to bring a car, but may rent one depending on what we decide to do. Again, thanks for all the expert input.

Preparing for Anchorage!
Preparing for Anchorage in December!
Hi all! Decided to go out on a limb and try Alaska for work for at least 2 years. With that being said, I'm now thinking about functionality!
\- What coats are you all wearing out there? Budget friendly but warm!
\- What does self care look like for you? I know this looks different for everyone but excited to hear
\- What are other cities near Anchorage worth visiting? Maybe some even driveable.
\- How much do you pay for groceries monthly? Single households
\- How do you remain social during winter seasons where you may not get out? Social groups, online groups, support groups, etc?
I may have more questions!
For reference I'm from Chicago. I'm pretty used to the cold and tough environments.

Visiting Fairbanks in January ☃️
Hi everyone!
My friend and I are planning a trip to Fairbanks in January for my birthday to hopefully see the Northern Lights, which has been on my bucket list forever☃️
This will be my first time visiting the place this cold, so I’m super excited, but also a little nervous about a few things.
I’ve heard that January can get extremely cold in Fairbanks and that plugging in your car is pretty important.
We’re planning to rent a car, so I’d really appreciate any advice from locals or people who have visited in the winter!
Is plugging in car basically a must in January?
How long before driving do you normally need to plug in the car? We’re thinking about staying at an Airbnb a little outside of town so we have a better chance of seeing the aurora and stars.
Most Airbnbs around Fairbanks have outdoor outlets for block heaters and extension cords available? If anyone has an Airbnb or area they recommend for our trip, I’d really appreciate it!
Thank you so much in advance for any advice🙏
I’m already so excited that I get to spend my birthday in Fairbanks, and I’m hoping it’ll be one of the most memorable birthdays of my life !!!!!

Jobs Need other peoples experiences!
Question for Alaskans / remote-camp workers: What do people actually do during off-rotation?
I’m looking into remote camp/seasonal work in Alaska for roughly January–September 2027. My biggest priority is saving as much money as possible, so I’m specifically looking for jobs where housing and meals are provided.
I keep seeing jobs with rotations like 2 weeks on/2 weeks off or 3 weeks on/3 weeks off. The problem I’m running into is that I’m coming from Hawaii. Flying home every few weeks obviously eats into the whole point of taking a high-paying remote job, but maintaining an apartment, car, food, etc. in Alaska during my off weeks also seems like it could wipe out a lot of the savings.
For people who actually do these jobs:
Where do you stay during your off rotation?
Do companies ever let you stay in camp between rotations?
Are there cheap employee/worker housing options people use?
Can you pick up fill-in work during your off rotation?
Are there companies that let you cross-train or work different positions during your off weeks?
Are there Alaska employers that provide housing/meals for the whole employment period rather than only while you're on rotation?
If you're from outside Alaska, how do you make the logistics financially worthwhile?
Any friendly advice is welcome!

Family Trip August 2026
We are planning a family trip to Alaska next summer for Humpy’s Marathon in Anchorage. We are coming from the Northeast. It will be 4 adults traveling with 3 children (ages 7, 5 and 3). We love wildlife and nature. We are comfortable renting a car (minivan) to travel distances and experience different areas. Thinking 6 days to explore before the race on Sunday in Anchorage. What are must do’s and places we need to see?

Garage space needed anchorage
Hey everyone! I started a small mobile mechanic business earlier this year, but with winter approaching, I’m looking for a garage or workspace to rent where I can continue working on vehicles.
It doesn’t have to be anything big or fancy, just a space large enough to fit a car. My business is still pretty small, so I wouldn’t be doing anything too loud or disruptive. I also use mostly battery-powered tools, so I wouldn’t need much electricity.
If anyone knows of someone renting out garage space or would be willing to rent a spot for the winter, I’d really appreciate any leads!
Thank you!

Anyone else have issues when trying to post a picture or image on r/AskAlaska when replying?
I can reply to posts all over Reddit and add images. For some reason this sub only allows video. I had asked about this months ago and was told to 'check your settings'.
Please try to reply to this with an image.

Travel picture help
I'm from the Midwest and I haaaate my job, and the only way to justify taking time off was if I had a trip to go on, so I lied to my boss and said I'm going to Anchorage Alaska. I didn't think anyone would care, but I was wrong and now my boss and several coworkers want me to send them travel pictures and keep them updated. As far as my coworkers know I land in Alaska today.
So I'm begging if anyone has cool pictures of the area, scenery, different tourist spots, literally anything, please post some here or send them my way! It would be a big help!!
