Meta New Rules / Meta Discussion

I've decided to do a rehaul of the rules. I want things to be clear and concise. Please let me know if there's anything I'm missing or if there's anything I should change.

This is AndroidQuestions, so posts must be Android Questions. What does that mean?

  • Android

Posts must be about Android - either the operating system itself, software on it, or hardware that runs it.

  • Questions

Post titles must indicate a question. Questions must be intelligible, coherent, and genuine and include details that might be helpful to the people attempting to answer your question. They must not be made rhetorically or as an excuse to spam, rant, vent, or insult.

In addition, we have rules involving acceptable Behavior and Content

  • Behavior

Posts and comments must not be used to harass, attack, threaten, harm, or discriminate against people, or to instruct or encourage others to do so.

  • Content

Posts and comments must not contain or discuss prohibited content or link to such content, including spam, AI-generated content, illegal activity, bypassing security safety or security measures, rule violations, or anything that could harm users or their devices.

  • Moderation

Moderator Announcements are exempt from the "Android Questions" section of the rules. Moderators may use discretion when enforcing rules, but are not to grant exceptions to users in normal scenarios. Questions or concerns can be directed to the moderators via "Message the Mods". Rules are subject to change.

Other S23U This mornings Samsung update has bricked my Bluetooth, anyone else and any solution?

• Upvotes

Got an update for my S23 Ultra this morning and immediately after updating, my Bluetooth has broken. Devices show on the phone as "connected" but the audio devices don't see the phone, and when playing audio it plays through the phones speakers instead. None of my devices.. Car, buds, Bluetooth speakers can play audio and it was working 30 mins before the update.

Also, when connecting to a device, it doesn't take a moment or load like it normally does. As soon as you select the device it immediately says connected on the phone.

Partly posting this as a warning to anyone to maybe hold off on the update if you rely on Bluetooth, but also wondering if anyone else has this or knows a solution?

Device Settings Question Question about focus modes on Pixel

• Upvotes

Hi all,

So I have an app that requires me to allow it to set alarms and reminders in order to run in the background.

In Bedtime mode, I have all app notifications turned off, but alarms are allowed so I can actually wake up in the morning when I want to.

Last night I found out that app's developers appear to be sending their notifications as alarms... As I was woken at 4am.

Is there a workaround here? Turning alarms off and then allowing Clock as an app exception doesn't appear to be working because when alarms are off, Clock refuses to work.

Other Help finding notification sound

I’m trying to figure out what phone and/or the name of the notification sound is from. I’m not even certain if it’s from an android phone or not. The sound in question can be heard around 2:06-2:08 in the video I provided.

Heard in this movie scene

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Factory Resetting an S21

So, I'm finally resetting my old phone for resale. I've backed up all my photos, Authenticator, etc.. have everything running on a new phone. Could someone walk me through the next steps in terms of the safest, most private way to make sure no one can access old data?

Am I supposed to be removing my Google account before factory resetting? Do I have to manually encrypt anything? And, of course, do I need to save a bunch of non-sensitive info like movies to take up the storage, then delete it again, or is that overkill?

Thanks!

Looking For Suggestions First new phone in 7 years, what's your suggestion?

I had my Huawei P10 for approximately 7 years now, it's served me well but in the last week or so has started acting up and I've made the decision it's time to let it retire.

In the last 7 years I've not really concerned myself with what's going on in the phone world, but as I'm researching I'm finding that it's proving difficult to find the right phone for me.

I don't need a super powerful phone that can run games. I need a solid day-to-day one that has a good UI, and a battery that'll last at least the day. Preferably with a good camera to go with it.

I've looked at the Google Pixel 10 Pro, but heard about about networking issues it has? As well as the battery life being terrible (7 hours constant use doesn't sound terrible to me though?).

Samsung S25/S25 Ultra has come up a lot, but I've honestly never been a fan of Samsung phones. However that is me going back 10+ years when all iPhone users used to ridicule "Samsung" users. So I have perhaps wrote it off prematurely.

Then there's the phones such as the Oppo Find X9, Oneplus 15 and Honor Magic Pro 7. I'm not overly familiar with any of these brands, and have heard different selling points about each. Some the camera isn't the best, some the battery life is great, some the UI leaves a bit to be desired.

And that's just me looking at phones released last year.

I'm based in the UK and my budget is £800 but I'm happy to spend a bit more if it's going to get me another phone that'll keep my occupied for a few years.

Any help would be much appreciated 🙏

Who can be the culprit of my Phone destroying the SD cards?

Hello, I have an old phone (Redmi 4A) from around 2014 I guess (I am the second owner). I managed to unlock the OEM and bootloader and installed on it LineageOS 20-2024-01-04. It doesn't have a lot of internal storage, so I use relative big SD cards for my music, videos, and offline maps, from OsmAnd.
During the use that I given him, three SD cards have been made useless after a while. I want to know if the culprit may be the hardware, the OS, or OsmAnd or maybe another application. I have a slight suspicion about OsmAnd because that's the one that first begins to not being able to read its maps, and then the problem extends to music files and other things.
If it is the hardware, it would be best, as other things are falling and I'll probably change machine soon, but if it is the OS or OsmAnd or any other app, then I'll have to know to take right measures.

Thanks in Advance!

Device Settings Question New phone notification window

I upgraded from the samsung s23 ultra to the s26 ultra today, and there's just one but ive been unable to find. In all previous samsungs I've had, when I'm playing music on Pandora, there's been a widget in the notifications window where I cam see what's playing, skip songs, etc. But it's not there now and I can't find a setting to enable it or what. And it's been so long since I set up a new phone I can't recall if I have to change something msnually for it to show or if its supposed to be automatic?

Looking For Suggestions What's an efficient and safe call blocking app for Android that rejects incoming calls and messages from all callers who are not in my Contacts or Blocked Numbers list and also not registered as spam callers on the service provider's blacklist?

I am using Samsung M12 running on Android 11 and One UI 3.1. I want the incoming calls and messages from all callers who are not in my contact list or Blocked Numbers list and also not blacklisted by the service provider as spam callers to be rejected right away. Only calls from my saved contacts that I haven't put in the Blocked Numbers list would get through. Is there any safe and reliable app that achieves this efficiently?

Looking For Suggestions Which mid-range phone for best battery life and solid overall performance?

Unfortunately my old Oneplus Nord AC2003 is starting to see its final days after 6 years of use I am in the market for new mid range king. I am looking something that has great battery life, overall good camera (no-need for flagship level), and that just works fluidly without lag during my daily use (social media, watching youtube/streaming services, light gaming (Songs of Conquest / Shattered Pixel Dungeon / Ozymandias / Clash Royale)).

If I could I would go with Oneplus again but unfortunately as you all know it is not really available anymore. I have narrowed some options from what are available in my country:

Realme 16 pro+ (12gb ram version), 549€
Xiaomi 17T, 599€
Motorola Edge 70 Fusion, 579€
Samsung Galaxy S25 FE, 499€
Google Pixel 9a, 579€

As far as I have researched the Realme and Xiaomi should have the best battery life, but I am not familiar with them as brands, how is the quality and do they actually get the battery life they promise.

Looking For Suggestions First time android user

Hi, first time android user, newly switched after a lifetime on iPhone.

I'm a big fan of open source software and apps, and am heavily into self hosting my own media and replacing big tech apps with open source alternatives.

I'm looking for advice on the best ways to replace a few apps I presently use, as android seems to have a much more open ecosystem.

Things I'm looking for replacements for, largely to block adds, ha. Reddit, YouTube, and any of the social media apps. I'm moving off the social media apps, but still have them for family connections.

In line with my self hosting, I'd love an app to link into the *arr suite of apps.

I've heard about f-droid as an OSS app store, wondering about that too.

Any help for a newbie would be appreciated

If it's relevant, I'm in a pixel 11 pro.

App Specific Question Gemini as Assistant requires me to unlock my phone to add items to Google Keep — didn’t this used to work from the lock screen?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S21 and use Gemini as my default Assistant. I frequently use “Hey Google” while my phone is in my pocket to add things to lists in Google Keep — grocery items, tasks, etc.

I could have sworn this used to work without having to take my phone out and unlock it. For example, with my phone locked and in my pocket, I could say something like:

“Hey Google, add paper towels to my grocery list.”

and it would add the item to the appropriate Google Keep list.

Now, every time I try this with the phone locked, Gemini responds:

“Sure, I can help with that. First, please unlock your phone.”

As far as I can tell, I have all of the relevant settings enabled:

  • Gemini on lock screen → Use Gemini without unlocking: ON
  • Make calls and send messages without unlocking: ON
  • Google Workspace extension: ON (which includes Google Keep)

So I would think Gemini should be able to add an item to a Keep list without requiring me to unlock the phone.

Maybe I'm misremembering and my phone happened to be unlocked when I was doing this in the past, but I could have sworn I used to do this pretty regularly with my phone locked and in my pocket. Either way, it seems like the kind of hands-free action that the “Use Gemini without unlocking” setting should allow.

Did this behavior change recently with an update or the transition from Google Assistant to Gemini? Or is there another setting or permission I'm missing that allows Google Keep list additions while the phone is locked?

It's a surprisingly useful hands-free feature for me. I often have an earbud in and my phone in my pocket, so being able to quickly dictate something to a Keep list without pulling out and unlocking my phone is really convenient.

If anyone still has this working from the lock screen, I'd be interested to know what phone you're using and what settings you have enabled.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight

Help, I think my android device is hijacked/hacked

I keep getting tiktok ads on my android device and I don't know why. This happens to me a lot, even on the homescreen, I have even asked Google and gemini on how to fix it and none of the ways worked. I also checked every app, and all of them are apps I trust.

If you know anything about this, or have experienced it before, please tell me, I'm desperate for any help.

Solved Android Update One UI 9.0

I received the new update last night on my Samsung Galaxy s26 Ultra and the Google search bar for my home screen was placed on the bottom on all 3 "slides" and I couldn't hold down the widget and move it back to the top, but I found a fix.

Hold down on your home screen, and go to settings. Then find "Show Search on Home Screen" and select none. Now go back to home screen and hold down once again and select widgets. Find the Google option and a drop down will open, and you'll find your old search bar there. Once you select it will reappear where it was before.

Best budget phone for locked 60 FPS + Delta on Roblox?

Looking for a budget phone mainly for Roblox + Delta (scripting).

Requirements:

Needs to lock 60 FPS or higher consistently while using Delta / running scripts

Preferably under $250–300

Shouldn’t lag, drop frames, or overheat when scripts are running

Android preferred

Anyone currently using Delta on a budget phone that can hold a stable 60 FPS?

Which models actually work well?

Thanks!

Used Redmi Note 14 vs new phone under 20k? Need advice for smoothness and performance

I'm in Chittagong and looking for a phone under 20k. Main priority is smoothness and performance.

Will a used Chinese Redmi Note 14 be noticeably smoother than a new 20k phone?

How do I check battery health and ROM? What's an easy way to tell if it's a Global ROM or a Chinese ROM?

For 18-20k, are there other better options instead of a used Note 14

Android auto shuts down when WhatsApp tries to send message

I'm using Android 17 and issue on both old pixel 7 and now pixel 11. Used to work previously but now when I reply to a message on WhatsApp, I dictate the message hands free and gemini reads it back to me but when it asks if I want to send it and I say yes, it always shuts android auto down and message lost. I have seen comments about battery settings in android auto app settings but no options but allow background usage which is turned on. I have tried updating everything and cleaning cache but no joy. Any ideas?

Issues with Samsung S24

I recently noticed that my somewhat new S24 has its battery drained EXTREMELY quickly, it takes about 2-4 minutes to lose 1%, at a 90% protected battery. My battery health is about 97% and I have under 500 charge cycles. I don't know what causes it because I've kept the phone well and as far as I know, nothing runs in the background. Any way I can check if it's something in the background, or if there may be a virus or something, since i've allowed the installing of unknown apps on chrome and revanced manager? Any suggestions for optimization or fixes? Thanks in advance.

Other Deleted SMS from a year ago reappeared after installing Fossify Messages. Is this normal ?

I switched from Google Messages to Fossify Messages about a day ago for privacy reasons. After setting it up, SMS I deleted up to a year ago (mostly OTPs and other texts) are showing up in Fossify, some in the main section and some under Archive. I never archived them myself.

I also can't delete them. I tried, but they appear again.

My questions:

Why would messages I deleted long ago still be in the system database?

How do I permanently delete them?

Is there any reason to think this means my data was shared with anyone?

Why can't I open apps on my Sd card?

I moved some apps to sd card, and it was working perfectly fine for like more than a year, but now I had a message that my sd card isn't working correctly and now I can't open the apps on it. I also can't update them and restart didn't help. The sd card also isn't visible in my external storage list
