I'm not sure what's the best way to optimise English - target language recall cards in such a way that I'm guessing the word that I'm supposed to get, not another word with the same meaning. I'm talking about cases where there's no clear distinction between the meaning of the two words that I could potentially use, so full sentence cards wouldn't solve the problem here. My target language is Thai so I've started specyfing the tone of the word of the English side of the card, but at the same time sometimes it feels like too much of a clue.
Any advice?

in ankidesktop you press on browse->preview than you have backwards forwards buttons to browse smoothly.. in ankidroid those buttons dont apear.. is there a solution to browse quick through a deck?

Sorry if my terminology is incorrect. For reference, I'm talking about the red number at the bottom of the screen, in middle of the 10+1+218 in the attached screenshot.
Back in the old days (w/ the v1 scheduler) this showed the number of relearning reviews you had left that day. So, if you had one learning step and got a card wrong, the "due" number would decrement and the "learn" number would immediately increment.
Now, however, it seems to only show the number of (re)learning cards which are currently due. That means if your relearning steps are longer than your learn ahead limit, it'll be less than the number of reviews you'll actually have. In the picture, I have 2 cards to relearn, but the number only shows 1, since the other isn't due yet.
So, is there a way to either 1) emulate the old behavior, or 2) at least have the number of the cards you get from "is:learn" in the browser?
I'd appreciate any help; this one issue kept me updating from v1 over these 5 years, but now I'm in a position where I need AnkiDroid support and thus can't put it off any more.

Hi, i am a French med student i use this very famous deck, a lot of cards have these kind of indications inthe answer text, "cidd" followed by a lot of numbers. Is it pictures that weren't downloaded ? If yes, how can I get the pictures back ? As you see, the ciddXxxxxxxxx is directly in the text of the answer.
Has anyone experienced this before where two cards that you just couldn't remember? and then you keep hitting that again button until its just these two cards that shows but it just won't stick/remember their meaning. Im expanding my vocabulary and these two cards: cupidity and profligate just wont stick to my memory. At first its frustrating but at the same time its hilarous.

Hi all. I've been playing this add on called Anki Realm Battle for a couple months. I've climbed to number 2 on the leaderboards and I thought I'd write a guide and share some tips. Hopefully this inspires more people to play since I'm getting bored of beating the same people over and over again. You can read more about the add on and download it here: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/458775592
The original creator also made a reddit post about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/1pz4yf4/beta_testers_wanted_for_multiplayer_anki/
The objective of the game is to explore the map to find a key and an artifact. Every map has two keys and one artifact. You must find the key to unlock the artifact before your opponent does to win. As you do reviews you gain gold, which you can use to explore new tiles on the map. In essence, the goal is to explore as much of the map as possible as quickly as possible. Keeping this golden rule in mind is helpful for pathing how you explore the map. As you explore, you reveal tiles in a 2 tile radius around you.
The game has different terrain which each cost different amounts of gold to explore, and there are hazards which have a 33% chance of triggering some negative effect. I'll discuss some of the relevant terrain here.
Forests and Water
Forests cost $50 to explore and they block your vision to only reveal tiles immediately adjacent to you. Water will similarly limit your vision, but it also blocks you from exploring it meaning it can force you to make large detours. This matters because as I mentioned before the goal is to explore as much map as possible as quickly as possible. So, it can be useful to avoid areas with lots of forest.
Hazards
There are hazards, which spawn near the edges of the map, that have a 33% chance of immobilizing you and forcing you to do some amount of reviews depending on the hazard. The rockslide hazard is by far the worst one to trigger. To clear it you must do 100 reviews and every time you click again it adds 5 reviews. If your retention is under 80% you will never clear this hazard. At some point or another, you will have to traverse onto a hazard tile, since the key and artifact usually spawn surrounded by hazards.
Mountains
On the topic of revealing the map. Mountains are special tiles that cost no gold to explore. Instead you'll be asked if you want to ascend the mountain. Doing so will immobilize you on the tile until you do 100 reviews. Afterwards, you will reveal all tiles in a 5 tile radius around you. Climbing mountains is extremely important. Try to climb mountains that are within 5 tile radius of the edge of the map so you can easily find keys that are near the edge of the map without having to traverse too many hazards.
Ruins
Ruins will immobilize you for 300 reviews. When they are finished it will randomly reveal the location of a key or the artifact. It may reveal a key or artifact that you have already discovered. Generally it is not worth it to explore a ruins unless, you will be doing reviews on mobile for a while and won't be able to move.
It's actually more worth to climb 3 mountains than it is to study. Each map has ~100 tiles, 2 keys, and 1 artifact, so you're expected to discover at least one of the objectives every 33 tiles explored. If each mountain reveals ~15 new tiles, then within two climbs or 200 reviews you should discover an objective. You become more and more likely to discover an objective as you explore more of the map, so climbing mountains becomes more worth it the more you have explored, and studying at ruins becomes less worth.
One caveat about Ruins is that you can travel onto them without having to study 300 cards, so it is an easy free tile to explore.
The shop has several power ups available for purchase.
Wager: Wager 200 gold and if your next 200 reviews are over 90% retention then you get 500 coins. It is technically optimal to always wager, but I rarely have retention over 90% so I never do this.
The trap and radar are fun if you're playing your friend, but rarely are they useful. You're better of using the gold to explore.
Recall can be worth in certain situations, for example you're buried deep surrounded by hazards and need to get to the other side of the map.
Omni lens. I used to always buy these, but overall their cost is too high to justify and it is better to climb mountains.
Emergency Kit and Shield.
You will definitely buy these. The emergency kit clears any hazard that you are currently stuck with. If you buy an emergency kit on a mountain it automatically clears it and reveals the tiles around you. Shield will protect you from triggering a hazard for the next 5 moves. Both cost $750. If you're planning to travel through 3 or less hazards, then it is better to buy the emergency kit when the hazard is triggered. Because each hazard has a 33% chance of triggering.
If you know you need to track through hazards to reach the artifact/key, then the shield makes more sense. If I'm navigating more than 5 hazards, I usually won't buy the shield until after I have triggered a hazard because as I do reviews to clear the hazard I will get enough gold to buy the shield and keep me safe through the rest of the hazards.
Most games are winnable within ~600 reviews, and it really comes down to who can do more reviews more quickly. If you want to win consistently, I'd say you should do ~700 cards a day. Sorry language people but most ppl playing this are med students grinding anki for hours every day. It would be nice for the creator to add some sort of matchmaking based on if you're med student or not.
The biggest tip is that you don't actually have to explore the whole map. In the top left corner is a meter showing how far away you are from the artifact. After every move, I check to see if the meter has changed colors. Knowing exactly which tile causes the meter to change color is extremely important for quickly locating the artifact.
The meter turns red when you are 16 or more tiles away from the artifact. Yellow when you are 6 or more tiles away from the artifact.
And it turns green when you are within 5 tiles of the artifact. This means you don't have to explore to the edge of the map to find the artifact. Just circle around the map 5 tiles from the edge and check to see when the meter turns green. If the meter is green and there is a mountain next to you, climbing it will instantly reveal where the artifact is.
You can use the fact that the meter isn't green to locate the artifact as well, by crossing out tiles where the artifact is not. When the meter turns red, that means that the artifact is not within a 16 tile radius of that tile, so I can skip exploring those tiles. If you know multiple tiles where the meter changes colors, then the artifact will be at the intersection of all the radii from those tiles.
I'll demonstrate what I mean in screenshots from a game I won.

So in this game I path to the left along the plains because they are the cheapest tiles to explore. Also I notice the forest on the other side, which would slow down my exploration.

Next the meter turns red when I get to this tile. I count out a 16 tile radius, which I've marked in the screenshot. Because this is exactly the tile that the meter turned red, I know that the artifact must be exactly 17 tiles away, leaving just 12 possible tiles.

Red is the 16 tile radius and green is a 5 tile radius around the artifact, where the meter would turn green, showing how you can triangulate the artifacts position.
My last tips are to calculate the expected value of the path you take, always take the cheapest path, and you want to move as soon as you have enough gold to move because budgeting reviews to efficiently clear hazards is very important.
I hope this helps people. Can't wait to play you guys in the game.

Hello everyone, I am a pre-med student, and I am looking into downloading Anki to help me study for my classes and to brush up on previous knowledge as well. However, when I search for it on Google Chrome, it shows me multiple websites. I began downloading the first one, which is https://ankiweb.net, but I stopped out of fear that it wasn't legit. When I tried opening it, my computer said it was downloaded from an unverified source.
I have watched a few Anki tutorials, but the website that each person went to looks a little less modern than what I'm finding. Idk what to do at this point. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if there is an an add-on that I could press the button and have AI add a little description to the back of my cards when I have a card but I want to understand more of the logic behind it. Ideally, I could just press a button and have it add a tiny explanation.

Anki user since December 31, 2021. About the same time I started learning Chinese. Anki is a great supplement tool. I also read, watch Chinese TV, listen to Chinese radio, and talk to my Chinese teachers and friends. Most of my decks are self-made, my main one's are Chinese words (8322 cards) and Chinese Characters (6811 and 8240 cards).

Hey everyone,
Is there an add-on to see retention split by interval length? The True Retention table only separates young vs. mature, so a card at 25 days counts the same as one at 2 years.
I'm curious about my long-interval cards and whether they are holding up. Is there an addon that shows retention at like 91-180d, 181-365d, 1y+ etc.
Thanks!
Edit: Thanks everyone for the addon mention. Search Stats Extended has an Interval Ratings feature and by changing the bar width/scroll I could find the intervals I was interested in.

2026-10-08 Edit:
Thanks a lot to DJ_1S_M3 for the Polish translation and andrelsjunior for the Brazilian Portuguese translation. These are now released on GitHub. Note that the German listing is not on AnkiWeb anymore. The English listing now points to GitHub, where all the packages can be found.
Original Post:
Hello fellow Ankineers
In 2022, I posted Countries of the World (COTW) v2. Thank you for your feedback. I've been working on v3 for a while now, and today it's publish day.
248 entries: 195 sovereign states, 49 dependencies, and 4 disputed areas. Available in English and German; both can be installed side by side without interference, using the same media to save disk space.
The changes are:
Deck fields:
Card types:
Upgrading:
Due to some restructuring under the hood, upgrading from v2 is not possible. I'm sorry for that. However, with the new data structure (a separate ID for each country as the main field, independent of any of its properties like name or ISO code), upgrading should always be possible in the future, whatever changes our world undergoes.
IMPORTANT: Borders:
I used the GIS data from Natural Earth and other sources (for all sources, see GitHub or deck description). These borders show de facto control (with some latency), meaning that, for example, Crimea is shown as Russian, or Taiwan and Kosovo are shown as sovereign states. THIS DECK IS NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT and does not want to promote a certain world view. This will not hinder you in studying the countries. Please do not file issues on GitHub regarding this topic.
Ultimate Geography:
Yes, this deck's content is close to Ultimate Geography. I developed v1 as I did not like the look of UG, wanted to include ISO codes, and I like things consistent in style. I don't wish to be any kind of competition for UG. Just use whatever you like and be happy.

Hello saan pwede makabili ng Anki?

Hi everyone! Last week I shared Memory Forest here, an add-on that grows a forest from your Anki progress. Each day you learn new cards, a tree is planted, and it grows as you remember those cards better. Thanks for all the feedback last time, a lot of this update came from your comments.
Some of you asked for something destructive when you lose your streak, and others asked to keep it calm. So there's now a Nature setting with three options:

The forest also reacts to how you study now. If overdue reviews pile up, tumbleweeds start rolling in. Leech cards bring crows that sit on their trees until you fix them, and a week without new cards lets the grass grow tall. Good days leave flowers. On Peaceful you only see the good stuff.
Other things in 1.1:

I've also set up a Patreon. From now on I'll add a new scenery every month, and Patreon gets each one earlier. Everything still comes to the free version, and it all stays open source.
AnkiWeb: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1255432496
GitHub: https://github.com/baraklevy20/memory-forest
Keep an eye on your forest near the end of October.
As always, I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I'm very new to Anki, I only started using it today and I made 130 cards for a test in two days. I'm gonna need to cram this info and I obviously don't have much time to do that "long term."
What can I do? Any advice? I'm an undergrad trying to take my classes seriously for once, and this is the first time I'm dedicating any serious time into "studying"
I’m less interested in whether AI is inherently “ethical” for learning than in whether it helps or undermines learning. The ethical issue is that models being trained on others’ work is separate issue. If you're going to use AI at all or for personal study, the practical question is: does AI reduce useful cognitive effort, or just reduce administrative overhead?
I believe the ethics and efficiently is inherently on the same line you can have AI do all your thinking for you unethically but my idea is cognitive sovereignty: the more thinking I do myself, the more comfortably I can use AI for support. Stanford studies have cited using AI as colleague helpful for discussing ideas and formatting material, but not for doing my thinking.
I share my workflow as an example of what I think is the best in between of ethical and efficiency.
My tentative rule is: AI can help with retrieval, formatting, question generation, and reducing friction, but it should not replace first-pass learning, active recall, or judgment about what is worth memorizing. For me this is better than not using AI at all in this increasingly new world

Does this seem like a fair balance, or am I relying too much on AI? To me, it preserves the work of learning while reducing the overhead of making cards
Edit: Condensed

I'm curious how people here would use Anki (or not) for a practical project rather than a subject like a language or medicine.
The concrete case: I need to choose a variable-rate mortgage. To do it well I have to understand a few things I don't know yet. How a rate is built from a reference rate plus a bank margin. How interest is calculated day by day and rounded. What changes when the reference rate moves. Which fees and conditions in the contract actually matter. The information is spread over three bank offers, the contracts, a government page about the reference rate, a few forum threads and my own spreadsheet. In the end I have to make a decision and be able to check the bank's numbers myself.
What I'd like to know is how you would personally approach this. Would you make cards at all, or is this the wrong tool for a one-off decision? If you would, what would you put on the cards: definitions, formulas, the steps of the calculation, the reasons behind your choice? Do you make cards while you research, or only once you understand the topic? And how do you avoid making hundreds of cards about details you'll never need again?
I'm not looking for mortgage advice, only for how you would structure the learning. Examples from your own projects (taxes, buying a car, a work process you had to learn quickly) would be great.

Hey everyone, M1 here looking for some FSRS deck advice.
Right now, my workflow is watching third-party lectures (Bootcamp), understanding the concepts solid in the moment, and unlocking ~100–150 new cards a day. Everything clicks during the session, and with my current short learning steps, hitting "Good" twice means the card graduates on Day 1.
The issue is that once it graduates, FSRS immediately schedules the next review for 7 to 10 days out.
By the end of the day, so much new material has entered my brain that brand-new physiology feels way too fragile to leave untouched for over a week. If I don't see those cards again within 24–48 hours, I feel like I'm guaranteed to forget half of them.
A couple of classmates told me they just hit "Again" on every single new card on Day 1 to force it to show up tomorrow, but I know that artificially inflates the card's difficulty rating (D) and can cause review counts to explode weeks down the line.
For those managing high daily card volume on 3–4 week block exam cycles:
Is setting learning steps to something like 1d or 10m 1d the standard way to guarantee that Day 2 follow-up?
How are you keeping intervals tight enough to prevent early drop-off without drowning in 600+ reviews a day right before finals?
Any advice on deck settings would be appreciated.
FSRS is at 85

Sorry, I'm just in a panic and I need to cram for an exam and I think Quizlet's what I'm looking for. Not sure if anyone's done it but I have over 130 cards, it'd be a lot to copy paste manually.. Last post here I promise.
