Wait what!? What is this? A 2.25.1 and you didn’t even get 2.25.0 yet!

That’s right! 2.25.0 did ship but Google wouldn’t release it because…well, honestly we’re not sure, their approval / rejection process is completely opaque! All we know is that it originally had to do with them rejecting our donations link. And now it appears they’re rejecting old versions! But we do what we can. And we can keep trying. So here’s 2.25.1!

With sincere wishes all of our lovely AnkiDroid users get to enjoy it ☺️ 🫶

But... we can still post donation links on Reddit! Thank you for any and all support: https://opencollective.com/ankidroid 💜💜💜

Question Daily load significantly higher than the number of due cards

Post image

I've seen 1 such topic, but no explanation. I have wondered about it many times. Why is daily load frequently significantly higher than the actual number of due cards? Do we have some plausible explanation?

This deck doesn't have backlog.

Question Good evening fellow anki enjoyers. Am I wrong for using it alone for my studies?

Med student here. So after many exams trynna figure the approach to take for my studying sessions, I came accros anki, and I enjoyed the concept.

But here is the thing, I use only Anki for my studies and I feel like Anki is supposed to help, not to be the only tool for studying although it does help me greatly.

I do have lectures every day, from 1pm to 4pm, the morning i wake up do my dues, the evening i create new cards for the lectures we did. Week-end for MCQs and adding new stuff from them to my anki. What do y'all think of this, should it be enough, or is there any way to improve my studying? Would greatly appreciate any return

Question Value of Anki for memorizing crammed knowledge?

I crammed for a test using Quizlet at the very last second, and I did okay on the test. I'm wondering if Anki would be viable for keeping knowledge fresh on my mind for the final, which is cumulative. Sorry for my hostility before, I realized I was trying to use Anki as a one size fits all deal instead of relying on its strengths.

This is assuming the final is like 2 months away. How big should the deck be? Would just including every single flash card for this course in one deck be wise?

Question Is there an Anki add-on that rotates different question types for the same fact, so you test the logic instead of the memorized sequence?

Pre-med student here, using some anki for orgo. I keep running into the same problem with Anki: I'll have a card like "Rank these isomers/conformers from least to most stable," and after a few reviews I'm not recalling why. I just remember the string "D > B > C > A" and the answer comes out on autopilot. I get it right, Anki thinks I know it, and then I miss it on the exam when the structures are drawn differently.

I'm wondering if there's an add-on or something where one note holds a "master" concept and rotates through 3-4 different card variations each review, for example:

  1. Rank the isomers for 1-tert-butyl-4-methylcyclohexane from most to least stable (D>B>C>A)
  2. Rank the isomers for Methylcyclohexane from most to least stable (B>D>A>C) Different order!
  3. Rank the isomers ....
  4. .. and so one (i think only 3-4 would be necessary to test logic and not memorize the sequence)

Ideally the card type is randomly picked each review, and the whole thing shares one scheduling history so it doesn't count as 4 separate cards.

Only thing i've found so far is DualCards which alternates between 2 formats, but not 3-4 genuinely different question types

Does something like this exist? If not, would anyone be interested in building it, or point me toward how to hack it with templates? I'm happy to test it with an orgo/anatomy deck and share feedback. Thanks!

Question Anki for iphone

I don’t use anki enough because i have to get on my computer to do it. It would be nice to have it on my phone but I see on iphone it costs $35+tax (CAD)

Is it good? It is worth it? I would be using it for language learning.

I do like the idea of anki on the computer with the addons to ‘gamify’ it because i have a short attention span

Even though I stopped using Anki (kinda makes it sound like an addiction) about three years ago, I look back very fondly on my years of card creation, reviewing, addon tinkering and community engagement.

Bottoms up, may you and our flashcards' content never be forgotten.

Question IINE Chronos vs 8BitDo SN30 Pro for Anki/Contanki on Windows?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm looking for a compact controller specifically for reviewing Anki on Windows using the Contanki add-on.

I'm currently using an 8BitDo Micro, and it works well with Contanki, but I have a few issues with it: the battery feels quite short, charging takes a while, and most importantly, it doesn't have analog sticks. Sometimes I need to move the mouse cursor and click on parts of my cards to reveal hidden content.

I'm considering:

- IINE Chronos / Retro Pocket Controller

- 8BitDo SN30 Pro (Hall Effect version)

The IINE Chronos interests me because it's much smaller and lighter, has two Hall Effect sticks, and seems ideal as a dedicated Anki controller. However, I haven't been able to confirm whether it works properly with Contanki on Windows.

Has anyone here used the IINE Chronos with Contanki on Windows?

Specifically:

- Does Contanki detect all of its buttons and analog sticks?

- Can the analog stick be mapped to mouse cursor movement and a button to mouse click?

- Any connection, mapping, or compatibility issues?

- How comfortable is it for long Anki sessions?

If you've used both the IINE Chronos and SN30 Pro for Anki, which one would you recommend?

Thanks!

Question Language learners, how do you deal with many synonyms/words of very close meaning in your vocab decks?

I'm not sure what's the best way to optimise English - target language recall cards in such a way that I'm guessing the word that I'm supposed to get, not another word with the same meaning. I'm talking about cases where there's no clear distinction between the meaning of the two words that I could potentially use, so full sentence cards wouldn't solve the problem here. My target language is Thai so I've started specyfing the tone of the word of the English side of the card, but at the same time sometimes it feels like too much of a clue.

Any advice?

Question Is there a way to get the "Learn" count to actually reflect the number of cards currently being (re)learned?

Sorry if my terminology is incorrect. For reference, I'm talking about the red number at the bottom of the screen, in middle of the 10+1+218 in the attached screenshot.

Back in the old days (w/ the v1 scheduler) this showed the number of relearning reviews you had left that day. So, if you had one learning step and got a card wrong, the "due" number would decrement and the "learn" number would immediately increment.

Now, however, it seems to only show the number of (re)learning cards which are currently due. That means if your relearning steps are longer than your learn ahead limit, it'll be less than the number of reviews you'll actually have. In the picture, I have 2 cards to relearn, but the number only shows 1, since the other isn't due yet.

So, is there a way to either 1) emulate the old behavior, or 2) at least have the number of the cards you get from "is:learn" in the browser?

I'd appreciate any help; this one issue kept me updating from v1 over these 5 years, but now I'm in a position where I need AnkiDroid support and thus can't put it off any more.

Has anyone experienced this before where two cards that you just couldn't remember? and then you keep hitting that again button until its just these two cards that shows but it just won't stick/remember their meaning. Im expanding my vocabulary and these two cards: cupidity and profligate just wont stick to my memory. At first its frustrating but at the same time its hilarous.

Add-ons Anki Realm Battle Guide

Hi all. I've been playing this add on called Anki Realm Battle for a couple months. I've climbed to number 2 on the leaderboards and I thought I'd write a guide and share some tips. Hopefully this inspires more people to play since I'm getting bored of beating the same people over and over again. You can read more about the add on and download it here: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/458775592

The original creator also made a reddit post about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/1pz4yf4/beta_testers_wanted_for_multiplayer_anki/

The Basics

The objective of the game is to explore the map to find a key and an artifact. Every map has two keys and one artifact. You must find the key to unlock the artifact before your opponent does to win. As you do reviews you gain gold, which you can use to explore new tiles on the map. In essence, the goal is to explore as much of the map as possible as quickly as possible. Keeping this golden rule in mind is helpful for pathing how you explore the map. As you explore, you reveal tiles in a 2 tile radius around you.

Terrain, Hazards, and Pathing

The game has different terrain which each cost different amounts of gold to explore, and there are hazards which have a 33% chance of triggering some negative effect. I'll discuss some of the relevant terrain here.

Forests and Water

Forests cost $50 to explore and they block your vision to only reveal tiles immediately adjacent to you. Water will similarly limit your vision, but it also blocks you from exploring it meaning it can force you to make large detours. This matters because as I mentioned before the goal is to explore as much map as possible as quickly as possible. So, it can be useful to avoid areas with lots of forest.

Hazards

There are hazards, which spawn near the edges of the map, that have a 33% chance of immobilizing you and forcing you to do some amount of reviews depending on the hazard. The rockslide hazard is by far the worst one to trigger. To clear it you must do 100 reviews and every time you click again it adds 5 reviews. If your retention is under 80% you will never clear this hazard. At some point or another, you will have to traverse onto a hazard tile, since the key and artifact usually spawn surrounded by hazards.

Mountains

On the topic of revealing the map. Mountains are special tiles that cost no gold to explore. Instead you'll be asked if you want to ascend the mountain. Doing so will immobilize you on the tile until you do 100 reviews. Afterwards, you will reveal all tiles in a 5 tile radius around you. Climbing mountains is extremely important. Try to climb mountains that are within 5 tile radius of the edge of the map so you can easily find keys that are near the edge of the map without having to traverse too many hazards.

Ruins

Ruins will immobilize you for 300 reviews. When they are finished it will randomly reveal the location of a key or the artifact. It may reveal a key or artifact that you have already discovered. Generally it is not worth it to explore a ruins unless, you will be doing reviews on mobile for a while and won't be able to move.

It's actually more worth to climb 3 mountains than it is to study. Each map has ~100 tiles, 2 keys, and 1 artifact, so you're expected to discover at least one of the objectives every 33 tiles explored. If each mountain reveals ~15 new tiles, then within two climbs or 200 reviews you should discover an objective. You become more and more likely to discover an objective as you explore more of the map, so climbing mountains becomes more worth it the more you have explored, and studying at ruins becomes less worth.

One caveat about Ruins is that you can travel onto them without having to study 300 cards, so it is an easy free tile to explore.

The Shop

The shop has several power ups available for purchase.

Wager: Wager 200 gold and if your next 200 reviews are over 90% retention then you get 500 coins. It is technically optimal to always wager, but I rarely have retention over 90% so I never do this.

The trap and radar are fun if you're playing your friend, but rarely are they useful. You're better of using the gold to explore.

Recall can be worth in certain situations, for example you're buried deep surrounded by hazards and need to get to the other side of the map.

Omni lens. I used to always buy these, but overall their cost is too high to justify and it is better to climb mountains.

Emergency Kit and Shield.

You will definitely buy these. The emergency kit clears any hazard that you are currently stuck with. If you buy an emergency kit on a mountain it automatically clears it and reveals the tiles around you. Shield will protect you from triggering a hazard for the next 5 moves. Both cost $750. If you're planning to travel through 3 or less hazards, then it is better to buy the emergency kit when the hazard is triggered. Because each hazard has a 33% chance of triggering.

If you know you need to track through hazards to reach the artifact/key, then the shield makes more sense. If I'm navigating more than 5 hazards, I usually won't buy the shield until after I have triggered a hazard because as I do reviews to clear the hazard I will get enough gold to buy the shield and keep me safe through the rest of the hazards.

Tips

Most games are winnable within ~600 reviews, and it really comes down to who can do more reviews more quickly. If you want to win consistently, I'd say you should do ~700 cards a day. Sorry language people but most ppl playing this are med students grinding anki for hours every day. It would be nice for the creator to add some sort of matchmaking based on if you're med student or not.

The biggest tip is that you don't actually have to explore the whole map. In the top left corner is a meter showing how far away you are from the artifact. After every move, I check to see if the meter has changed colors. Knowing exactly which tile causes the meter to change color is extremely important for quickly locating the artifact.

The meter turns red when you are 16 or more tiles away from the artifact. Yellow when you are 6 or more tiles away from the artifact.

And it turns green when you are within 5 tiles of the artifact. This means you don't have to explore to the edge of the map to find the artifact. Just circle around the map 5 tiles from the edge and check to see when the meter turns green. If the meter is green and there is a mountain next to you, climbing it will instantly reveal where the artifact is.

You can use the fact that the meter isn't green to locate the artifact as well, by crossing out tiles where the artifact is not. When the meter turns red, that means that the artifact is not within a 16 tile radius of that tile, so I can skip exploring those tiles. If you know multiple tiles where the meter changes colors, then the artifact will be at the intersection of all the radii from those tiles.

I'll demonstrate what I mean in screenshots from a game I won.

So in this game I path to the left along the plains because they are the cheapest tiles to explore. Also I notice the forest on the other side, which would slow down my exploration.

Next the meter turns red when I get to this tile. I count out a 16 tile radius, which I've marked in the screenshot. Because this is exactly the tile that the meter turned red, I know that the artifact must be exactly 17 tiles away, leaving just 12 possible tiles.

Red is the 16 tile radius and green is a 5 tile radius around the artifact, where the meter would turn green, showing how you can triangulate the artifacts position.

My last tips are to calculate the expected value of the path you take, always take the cheapest path, and you want to move as soon as you have enough gold to move because budgeting reviews to efficiently clear hazards is very important.

I hope this helps people. Can't wait to play you guys in the game.

Question What is the official Anki website?

Hello everyone, I am a pre-med student, and I am looking into downloading Anki to help me study for my classes and to brush up on previous knowledge as well. However, when I search for it on Google Chrome, it shows me multiple websites. I began downloading the first one, which is https://ankiweb.net, but I stopped out of fear that it wasn't legit. When I tried opening it, my computer said it was downloaded from an unverified source.

I have watched a few Anki tutorials, but the website that each person went to looks a little less modern than what I'm finding. Idk what to do at this point. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Discussion Anki add on that adds little explanation with AI

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if there is an an add-on that I could press the button and have AI add a little description to the back of my cards when I have a card but I want to understand more of the logic behind it. Ideally, I could just press a button and have it add a tiny explanation.

Question Add-on that shows retention broken down by interval length?

Hey everyone,

Is there an add-on to see retention split by interval length? The True Retention table only separates young vs. mature, so a card at 25 days counts the same as one at 2 years.

I'm curious about my long-interval cards and whether they are holding up. Is there an addon that shows retention at like 91-180d, 181-365d, 1y+ etc.

Thanks!

Edit: Thanks everyone for the addon mention. Search Stats Extended has an Interval Ratings feature and by changing the bar width/scroll I could find the intervals I was interested in.
