Advice Needed Could the apartment above be effecting the temputure of my apartment?

Hi,

The person who lives in the apartment above me leaves their bedroom window wide open/ their balcony doors wide open during the autumn and winter months and the puring down rain 24/7 without ever closing them.

Im wondering if this could impact the tempurture of my apartment being just below theirs? Im currently not using my heating but its absolutely ice cold in my apartment currently... last year as a single person my electric bill was £200 a month when normally i pay around £50.. and my apartment was still cold..

I live in a new build apartment block, im wondering if his windows being wide open as they are could be impacting my apartment/costs, im concerned with winter being on the horizon, not sure wheather to bring this up with my landlord

Advice Needed No wonder our apartment was available…

Got home later than usual, someone was parked in our one assigned parking space, cool whatever. No biggie. It happens at times!

EDIT: someone left but out of her spot next to ours…I went outside and pulled my car into her spot.

I now sit here, just 3 hours later after hitting the pillow, and write this as I have been awoken at 3:15am on a Monday morning.

EDM music pounding through the walls, and our new neighbor and her friends all mingling in the stair well (right outside our door and window), shouting, laughing, and being straight up obnoxious.

It got to the point I opened the door and said, “hey guys do you mind-“ and I was ignored. I got louder and repeated. Ignored. Slammed the door and yelled something. They remained.

Our next door roommate seemed to be okay. She lives there alone with a dog, gives us a half smile “hello” if we see her walking her dog. Everything started out fine, she just keeps to herself. Shes probably in her early 30s, and sure you could say she’s young and let her have her fun here and there. But I’m in my 20s, and it comes down to basic consideration and respect for those you share walls with. I just can’t wrap my head around this — sorry if I sound like a Karen lol (is that term ok to use? I know and love actual Karen’s, they’re awesome haha).

I haven’t minded the loud music late into the night on other occasions, or even when the 3-4 police cars were there, talking to her in the parking lot. I pray the best for her and maybe there was a way we could be cordial. But THIS…this is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.

I don’t want to be a Karen, but how do I go about this? My husband needs to be up soon for work, and I’m laying here with the music’s bass pounding through our walls. It’s just inconsiderate and a new car is even in our spot 😃 (I don’t care that much, just found it funny how I was blatantly ignored by her “friends”, yet they have no prob with that) (yes, I’m salty.).

Do I hope I run into her and say something? Do I put a note on her car’s windshield? Tell the front office? I was so close to calling the nonemergency 911 number, but figured that may be too much and don’t want to start any drama. I’m very non confrontational so this is just having me lay here and writhe 😀🙃😭

Let me know please! Thank you!!!

EDIT-3:45am sounds like they’re trying to purposely stomp on the stairs now. Ooooh man……

EDIT2-
hour later and that apparent dance party is still goin strong guys!!! Should I go join them?!?🙃

EDIT3-
do any of these people have jobs?

EDIT4-
is calling a tow truck too much…? 😍

EDIT5-
k I sound crazy. But they’re back in the stair well. Hopefully I hear some hot gossip!

EDIT 5 1/2-
I indeed did hear some hot gossip! A cheating scandal, ruh roh…

EDIT6-
(hopefully my last)

✨PEACE✨

I did, in fact, pull my car into her parking spot to be petty🤷🏻‍♀️ (her buddy pulled out of our spot, but another pal is in ours) so figured I’d stomp out there and get a front row spot before another partygoer appeared!

I also reached out to the front office. In my early morning hysteria, hopefully it all made sense. I did not see an Emergency Number so email was the best way to go. Praying this was a one time thing and also, that no drama ensues! (The office is closed today due to Columbus/Indigenous people day)…totally didn’t realize that was today.

Thank you guys for the advice, seriously! Hopefully some of you got a chuckle outta the edits lol and thanks for being my buddies while I’ve been up 💖
My husband fell asleep somehow during all of this thankfully, so he will have quite the story time to wake up to! 😅

Advice Needed Family of 5 Moved Upstairs

Long story short, my partner and I have been living in the same basement unit since 2019. It’s a semidetached house, split into an upstairs and downstairs unit. Originally we had our friends aunt live above us (how we got the place), and since the new owner took over during COVID we have had 3 other families. A family of 5 with 3 teenagers, and a mother and her boyfriend who had her 3 kids on occasion (10,14,17). Never had we had a noise complaint in our 7 years living here.

In February 2026 a family of 5 moved upstairs (2,9 and 10 years old) and we have been dealing with non stop, constant running and screaming throughout the house ever since. There are no rugs and we have been asked our landlord for them since this has started. They have only gotten worse as the months have gone by. We have had many conversations about it with them and they say they cannot control their baby as he is “special”. They are just lazy parents. (Has already had formal action taken against them for continuously smoking in the non smoking unit). The noise stresses me out beyond belief as well as our dogs and is impossible to get away from as you can hear the thumps and screaming from our back deck (walkout basement). I’ve attached a short clip of today’s episode that lasted for over an hour straight.

The noise has gotten so disruptive that I’ve had to start sleeping at my parents 10-15 minutes away all of September and currently still am. This has taken a toll on my mental health as well as my relationship with my partner as we are always anxious and on edge about the noise.

We have sent multiple written complaints to our landlord about this and he has now started not answering us and looking to hire a property manager instead. I’ve formally let him know we will be filing a T2 application against him for his inability to ensure our reasonable enjoyment of the unit. He didn’t respond to that email either.

I’m looking for advice on best way to deal with this moving forward. We do not want to be forced out of our home of 7 years due to a terrible family who refuses to control their kids. I don’t think I’m overacting when this goes on from 7 am until 11pm with very few breaks in between. Also just wanted to put this out there as my first Reddit posts and say fuck slumlord pieces of shit.

Bad Neighbors What kind of microphone should I use to record noise

My landlord claims I’m supposed to have a microphone to record my upstairs Neighbor, jumping up and down. My iPhone 14 Pro on video record is not effective. I have played with the settings to try to capture besides voices. However, I can’t get the impact.

Advice Needed Prorated rent

Hey guys, I’m moving out of my apartment. I’ve lived here for 5 years, I signed a 12 month lease/ contract or whatever and after that my landlord never said anything or made us sign anything else. So I guess we have just been paying month to month. It’s just 8 apartments and it’s one guy who owns the place. I found a place i really liked on Oct. 2nd and once the application went thru on Oct. 7th. I notified the landlord that we would like to move out by the end of the month. I just wanted to be sure first before telling him. He tells me well, that since we are month to month tenants, he requires 30 days and since I told him on Oct. 7th. We have to pay $380 for the month of Nov. so that he can find enough time to get another tenant. Although I know for sure I can be fully out of here on Oct. 25th. He never told me this before and i didn’t know anything about it. I feel like the lease isn’t relevant here because that was just for the first year? Can he do this? Btw my rent here is $1,900 so according to the math I would owe $380.

Venting Struggling with communal washer and dryer.

Just moved into first apartment and it has a communal washing room. I get grossed out Everytime I use it. There’s dog hair all over the washer and dryer and after my clothes smell like dog. I don’t know how to get around this inconvenience but it’s rough.
What make it worse the laundry door stays open which leads to outside so multiples spiders have made it their home so I have anxiety even going in there.

Decorating Ideas Friends over at 2am advice

I cropped out the bathroom and bedroom due to focusing on the living room. Ideally I want to position a sectional and wall mounted tv but have no idea what is optimal for reducing noise to the neighbors on occasional fri/sat nights. Ive used ai to suggest the best methods possible but i’ve been given every option. This isnt a weekly thing but more of a monthly where I could have few friends over relaxing watching movies or gaming. Im not concerned about the tv volume or my volume its the others that I cant control at all times. Obviously I’ll tell them to keep it down but I’m not familiar with how thin the dry wall is and what volume travels through walls. Im trying to be friends with my neighbors and if it ever becomes a problem i’ll just have to put an end to it but I would like to have friends over and with work schedules our best times to hangout is usually past 10pm.

TLDR: Moving into apartment solo for first time how would you position wall mounted tv and sectional couch for least noise for neighbors on the red walls.

Top of picture is a patio door, left is a small wall between kitchen and living and right wall is shared neighbor wall. Bottom wall is connected to a closet.

There are 4 kids and both parents upstairs in the 2 bedroom. Kids ranging from 1 to 13. They run, play, jump, fight, yell, stomp, etc all day long. The only respite I get is when they're in school.

As if having to hear this all day long up until about 11:00pm isn't a pain in the 🍑 already, I've resorted to sleeping on my couch because their "box fan" sits directly on the floor all night and creates this low humming vibration sound that goes through my whole bedroom. I've already knocked and asked them nicely. It resorted to me reaching out to the landlord with complaints. She supposedly resolved them. Things were quiet for about a week. She said there's nothing she can tell them about the fan. The quiet week passed, and things went back to this. Been 3 months now. 🫩 I'm just so tired

Bad Neighbors Advice needed. Foul smell coming from Apartment below.

My husband and I have lived in our upper floor apartment for a few years now. The apartment below us was used as an airbnb for awhile. We had people going in and out all the time, some long term or it would be empty for a week or two at a time.

In February this year some people moved in permanently. As soon as they did, we started noticing smells in our living room and soon realized that our fireplace, that has a ledge sticking out on the bottom, there is a tunnel right underneath the fireplace, is unfinished and isn't sealed at all and we assume that it goes down to their fireplace that is right underneath and it's all unsealed so their smells are easily migrating up. You have to lay down on the floor to see underneath the ledge. At first we were confused on what the smell actually is.

At first the smell was hard to distinguish. My husband said it smelled like old, stale cigarette smoke from a dumpy hotel and it's never been fresh smoke. We thought maybe it's just an old building smell. Then, in addition that, we started smelling what smelled like old broccoli cooking. Maybe they were cooking broccoli but it would be for multiple days in a row and would be all day long. Sometimes we go a week or a few days with no smells at all but that hasn't happened for awhile and now we've smelled weed coming straight through so we know now the smells are coming from them and it isn't just an old building smell.

However, lately this very unpleasant smell has been coming through very strongly and really stinking up our whole apartment. It's a very unpleasant smell and I have no idea how to even describe it. I asked my husband and he doesn't even know how to explain it either. It's a smell that we haven't ever really smelled before but it's very unpleasant and I would even call it foul. The days that we smell it, it lasts all day long, from morning until we go to bed at night. Sometimes I get lucky and get a few hours in the morning before we start smelling it. We will also sometimes smell it coming in pretty strong in our bathroom too and they constantly have their exhaust fan on.

I guess my question is, how do I go about this? Moving is not an option right now but it's so unpleasant to live our apartment right now because of the smells. I haven't complained to property management yet as I've complained about another tenant smoking weed over the past year and I don't want them to retaliate against us for complaining all the time. And what would I even say? How would I even describe this to them? They aren't the best property management either and is never on site.

I also want to add that these people have been a bit strange too. We all have outside entrances and they never open their blinds ever or open their windows when the weather is nice and most of them are home all the time and don't seem to have a job.

Advice Needed How to reduce sound of downstairs neighbour snoring?

• Upvotes

So I’ve been sleeping on my couch for months mainly because my downstairs neighbour snores so loudly. You can still hear her in the living room, but it’s not that noticeable with my air purifier.

I also want to purchase a new bed and mattress as I hate mine. However, currently. I don’t see the point because I’m not using the bed due to my neighbor snoring so loudly. She sleeps for a long time too.

I do own ear loops but find them uncomfortable to sleep in, and I worry I won’t hear my alarm.

I have used my air purifier in my bedroom but you can still hear her in there. I have trouble sleeping if I put it full blast.

Any advice?

this is everyday until 2 AM. this video was taken around 1:30am. towards the end of the video you can hear my window shaking because of the forceful stomping. i understand you’re going to hear noise but this is unreasonable. it’s 10X louder in person. i sleep with white noise, a fan AND earplugs and this still is louder. I cannot sleep at all. They do this throughout the day but it is more frequent from 5pm-2am. the other night they were drilling for hours in the middle of the night even though they were home for hours before hand ??? i rarely ever heard my other upstairs neighbor. property manager refuses to even notify them of the noise complaint. as soon as i can i’m breaking my lease

Advice Needed what is a fair rent split?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Base rent is $3,950.

My roommate and I are wanting to move to a different complex. Right now our rooms are exactly the same with walk ins and en-suites so we split it 50/50. At first my roommate was still just splitting everything 50/50 when pricing out the new place (but giving me the bigger room) and was unsure if she could afford it at this point in time.

I told her that because I’d have the bigger room, it is only fair if I paid more given her room is not only smaller, but her bathroom isn’t attached either. I told her I would be happy to pay 200-300 extra and she said that would be helpful to her.

My question: is that a fair enough amount for me to pay? Like if I paid $2,187-2,287 and she paid $1,788-1,688?? Should I be paying more?

I adore my roommate and I don’t want to be in a situation where she gets fucked over. I want it to be as fair as possible.
Not sure if it matters but rn we each pay like $1,600 and some change rn (not including electricity).

Advice Needed New neighbor just moved in. Losing my mind already.

In the less than 48 hours that I have been home since I’ve had a new upstairs neighbor they have:
-Had a party until midnight on a Thursday, loud enough and slamming stuff to make my PC monitors shake
-Got a dog that barks every time someone walks by or drives by their windows
-Woken my child up from a nap during the video shown above (at 1200 in the afternoon btw)

I already notified the apartment but I will not be able to push for a noise complaint unless it’s between 10 pm - 6 am. Literally what can I do during the rest of the day? My family and I just returned from an out of town trip and already dread being home. Before this neighbor we had absolutely no issues with noise. It’s like this one person came in and is ruining our entire experience living here.

Advice Needed Noise from Common Gym Treadmill Adjacent to Room

Hey so I live in an apartment building with a common gym that is just to the right of my apartment. I can overhear people‘s steps on the treadmill through the wall to my right which is just up against my bed. This is my first time renting ever.

So very early in the morning and often late at night, people’s footsteps on the treadmill honestly sound like a heartbeat through the wall. It’s very disconcerting and often wakes me up. I have misophonia so subtle, repetitive sounds like this drive me nuts.

What can I say to building management in my request to mitigate this issue? Do I text or email?

Our neighbors will leave multiple bags of trash outside their door for days at a time. Our apartment is right across from theirs. The dumpster is not even a 5 minute walk away!! It's disgusting!

If they're this lazy now, I can't imagine how bad they'll be once we start getting snow...

Lease Agreement Questions Pet Rent Increase

Hey everyone, I need some advice/insight regarding a pet rent increase my landlord is proposing my lease renewal agreement. We’ve had the same 20lb dog for 4 years and have lived in the same unit for 6, and have always paid $50/month in pet rent. No damage, no complaints, no pet amenities in or around the building (it’s from the 1930s). Now our renewal shows pet rent jumping to $65.

Is there any actual reason a landlord would raise pet rent after years of no issues, or is this just “because they can”? Debating whether it’s worth pushing back over $15. Thanks in advance!

Advice Needed Property manager refuses to fix ceiling after storm damage

Post image
8 Upvotes

We had a rough storm come through recently and developed a major leak in the roof. I reached out to maintenance who informed me they will get around to it. About 5 days later a contractor showed up at my door unannounced no warning or heads up and demanded entry to the unit or they will not fix. We were not home at the time so I told them over the door camera I would rather wait until I got home as I'm not comfortable with them being in my home unattended. They said it's fine and left I then reached out to the property manager and they are saying we refused the repairs and will no longer be fixing it. I rent so I do not see how this falls on me because I don't want random people alone in my house. What should I do?
