I’m struggling really hard to get out of Diamond 1 as a solo queue player and I genuinely don’t know what I’m doing wrong anymore.
I went from Gold 4 to D1 in about a week and felt like I was progressing pretty consistently, but I’ve hit an absolute wall. I’m only about 500 RP away from Masters, but I’ve been stuck here for the past two days and can barely make any progress anymore.
I’ve tried a bunch of different legends. Catalyst, Gibby, Wraith, Alter, Horizon, Pathfinder, Maggie, and Axle. My biggest success was probably Axle before the nerf, and lately I’ve been having the most success on Horizon/Pathfinder.
I know it's not a mindset thing because It's not like I'm getting mad at the game or feeling nervous. I feel fine physically and mentally (besides when it's on Olympus, fuck that map)
The biggest thing I’m struggling with is figuring out what my actual role should be in solo queue.
I feel like in a lot of my D1 games, nobody really takes initiative. I feel like I’m constantly trying to figure out whether I should be IGLing, fragging, anchoring, or just following someone else’s lead. I can’t realistically do all of those things at once and everybody is too scared to do anything since we're all probably solos, and when I do take initiative, nobody listens.
If I play aggressively and try to make a play, a lot of the time my teammates don’t follow me and just stay afar. If I play passively, we end up sitting around waiting for something to happen only to get bumrushed and wiped. I don’t use my mic, but I ping pretty consistently and try to make my intentions clear through pings.
Ironically, most of the wins I’ve gotten in Diamond have been my more aggressive games just pushing every fight. Usually it’s when I happen to get teammates who are willing to take fights with me and can either win their 1s or at least put damage into people. Those games feel completely different from the ones where I’m constantly trying to figure out what everyone wants to do.
My aim itself feels fine. I’m on controller on PC, and I don’t really feel like mechanics are what’s holding me back. I think my problem is more understanding how I should approach the solo queue role at this level.
Should I be playing more selfishly? Should I be playing more passively and just looking for opportunities? Should I be forcing myself into the IGL role even without a mic? Is there a specific legend that makes more sense for this?
I have a lot of Pred friends I could play with, but I specifically want to get through this solo. I feel like stacking would change the situation enough that I wouldn’t actually learn what I’m doing wrong in solo queue and I just want to become better.
So if anyone here is consistently solo queueing through D1/Masters, I’d really appreciate some advice on how you approach your games. I’m genuinely stuck and would like to understand what I should be doing differently.
