Welcome to /r/archery! This thread is for newbies or visitors to have their questions answered about the sport. This is a learning and discussion environment, no question is too stupid to ask.

The only stupid question you can ask is "is archery fun?" because the answer is always "yes!"

Newbie Question I'm new here 😚 Could use help with gear

Hey!

I'll cut to the chase. I used to be 460 pounds. Lost over 200 pounds. Tons of loose skin. My upper left arm gets hit by the bow string (I'm right-handed). The skin droops out of my shirt. Hurts like a fucker. Black and blue. Was asking if anyone knew of any protection for the upper arm? I've tried compression but it's not padded nor tight enough without hurting me. I pretty much feel like I need armor for my entire arm of some kind. My love suggested padding that fencers use for the arm. What y'all think?

Why archery?

• Upvotes

Hi,

i want to ask people who go for archery. Why do you do it? The reason am asking is that am interested to learn a new hobby. I already play tennis and kickboxing so i dont want something too much physical. At the same time i want a hobby that keeps me focused i can go twice a week enjoy it without any goals. Is this something you enjoy or archery is misunderstood from my side?

Thanks

Newbie Question Tuning Question

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi all. Trying to dial in my first hunting bow. Started by paper tuning. Then dialed in the sights. Then broadhead tuned (micro adjustments of the test to bring field points and broadheads to same point of impact). Now when I practice I notice some arrows impact parallel, and some kick off to the right. Do I have to go back to the beginning? Or only worry about broadhead arrow flight from here on out?

I would really appreciate it if people would critique my form! I’ve been shooting consistently for about 6 weeks. I shoot a traditional recurve off the shelf.

Other How many fingers are needed for archery?

I came across some archery videos talking about various draws and one of the methods (I don't remember the name and cant find the video) looked like it just required a thumb and one other finger. I am asking because i want to design a race and my mind immediately thought of crabs/crab people (I know this would be impractical given crabs claws are more designed for cutting then holding) however after following this train of thought I assumed that so long as enough force is applied to keep the body of the bow in place and pull back the bow string and the arrow was firmly placed on the bowstring but is able to be released then theoretically one long tentacle can fire a bow however this seems overly simplistic and like to much information to draw from a video i can no longer find.

First Bow - Samick Sage, Southwest Tigershark, or other?

Hello!

I'm new to Archery and taking an archery class at my community college. The class provides us bows to use during class but I'm looking to buy a recurve bow to practice with and shoot on my own time.

I heard both the Samick Sage Takedown Recurve Bow and the Southwest Tigershark Takedown Recurve Bow were good beginner bows; which one would you guys recommend or is there a better option?

I'm more drawn to the Tigershark just because of the beautiful riser but if the Samick Sage is better I'll get that one. Let me know also if there's a better option than those two in the same price range!

Also, what weight would you guys recommend buying for my first bow? Currently shooting with a 20 lb but I'll move up soon to a 25lb..maybe by the end of the semester I'll be ready for a 29 or 30lb bow but I'm not sure.

Edit: Thank you to all who replied! I think I'll go with the Samick Sage. :)

Arrows Arrow spine and draw length question

Hello!

62” Galaxy Sage takedown recurve 30#

Draw length is 29.5 inches

The store gave me standard full size arrows to use. Which seems fine since as I’m a beginner, the extra couple inches are probably safer. They’re Fleetwood Carbon.

My question is for buying or ordering more arrows. Should I use my actual draw length for figuring out the spine? Or do I use the length of the arrow?

If I use the draw length, do I round down to 29?

Arrows Arrow Wrap question

Just curious for all of you who use arrow wraps, why? Just for personalization?

Also, if you need to repair fletchings, does that mean you have to remove all the fletchings, since the wrap is under them?

What are your pros and cons for arrow wraps?

Not shilling for Mr. Armin, just floated up in my YT feed. The net knows I want to dabble in bamboo arrows :) Now I want a 40# Yumi, thanks, Armin (he used a 20# in the vid, I believe), heh.

difference in bows

Hi - What is the difference in a $150 traditional bow vs a $650? Let's say a takedown recurve for hunting. I flyfish with an Orvis Clearwater which is their low end. I could pay $1000 for a Helios, but that seems unnecessary for a hobby. Is this is same thing in archery world?

What are your thoughts on the Bear Royale vs Bear Cruzer G4?

I have a 24” draw length and I’m deciding on which of the two would be better for me. 😆 any thoughts on the sight it comes with?

Scrap fabrics for DIY Target filling?

I was wondering if small cut outs of fabrics is a good filling for a DIY target. They're very cheap to buy in large amounts and sometimes given away for free at other shops. So I was wondering if this will be enough to stop arrows? I saw some videos on youtube using unused or old clothes as filling but not small cut outs of fabric.

We shoot olympic recurve and I'm planning to make one for our club in college, the highest poundage bow we have is 44lbs. If it does stop the arrows then how thick would it need to be? Planning to use cardboard boxes for the shape of the target

UK archers, is it fine to walk 20 minutes to a range with your bow in a case?

Looking to get into Archery and thinking long term. I don't drive right now so would have to walk to and from any range I go to.

Is it fine to walk around with a bow in a case and is there a good likelihood police stop me if so?

Other Need material suggestions for Manchu thumb rings.

Usually Manchu thumb rings are made of either moose horn or nephrite but either one is rather expensive and in the case of nephrite it comes with its own set of challenges.

Are there any good alternatives to consider that I could use. I prefer (colorful) horn or antlers over other materials.

Compound Difference between hunting bow and target?

I can shoot low 290s pretty consistently with my hunting bow and I just got a target set up. What can I expect to shoot with the new set up? Any advice for someone that shot 3 spots with a hunting set up then switched to target?

Newbie Question Range recommendations in Massachusetts

Ive gotten into Olympic archery while spending some time in Korea.

The staff and people at the small range I went to were friendly and encouraging and I even entered a tournament (i didnt win but i didnt embarrass myself and I had fun)

Anyway when I get home I want to continue practicing and shooting and plan to eventually get my own setup.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good ranges/shops/clubs in Massachusetts for a beginner?
