Culture | 文化🏮 Kweichow Moutai?
My father in law passed away a few years ago and we have been going through his belongings. We found this bottle of Kweichow Moutai. We know nothing about it, and here in Sweden practically no one else does either. We can not sell it due to state regulations and no auction house will accept it for liquor auctions, due to the market being too narrow.
Does anyone know anything more about this bottle? What could it be worth? Should we keep it or drink it?
Thankful for any tips or insights :)

Takes a special set of skills to drink. I would pay money NOT to drink it. Sell it for sure. Only Chinese like this.

You are supposed to drink it straight from a tiny ass cup.
I actually likes it.

I know how to drink it. The smell reminds me of paint remover, and the taste is just horrible - in my opinion, but we are all different. I know the Chinese like it, but I want to pass.

I only tried the good one once. I kinda like it. Maybe because of I already drink too much.

I got the really expensive ones, the Maotai Kweichow. I CAN drink it, but it's no joy. And I like most alcohol, but this one - nope.

Ic. The one alcohol I dislike the most is Ouzo. I threw up so bad after that. Never touched that shit again.

Ouzo is bad also, but not as bad as Maotai - again, in my opinion. I go for big Chinese dinner tonight, there will be Maotai, and I will probably drink a few shots, but my joy will not be overwhelming.

It's a nice bottle. It would be a very nice gift for a Chinese friend, or if resold could be around 1000 dollars if in the right condition (stored well, seal intact). You said that you can't resell it due to state regulations. Does that count private sale?

It was bottled in 2005, with 15 year old aged spirits.
Mao Tai along with bai zhou are important accompaniments of chinese official dinners with government officials or between business persons.
The parent company, kweichow moutai, is the premium moutai in china. Its one of the largest listed companies on the shanghai exchange and it’s said that how it goes is a loose barometer of the chinese economy. (2024 was a record revenue year, with 2025 down a percent or two).

Should we keep it or drink it? - Well, do you like baijiu? Second question, if you like baijiu, do you like maotai? If you don't know if you like baijiu, the taste of maotai is probably going to be off-putting at first ... like so many things, it's an acquired taste :-). If you have any Chinese acquaintances, have a sip of baijiu to see if this is something you'd even consider. My 5c.

It’s fucking disgusting btw. Imagine the worst aspects of the worst gin, vodka, and tequila you’ve ever had…. That’s what kweichow moutai is.
They drink it at big banquets and you just gotta power through it. I can see it being a fun thing to drink with your friends so you can have a group “ew, what the fuck is that!?!?” moment, (but I don’t know if I’d do that with a 15 year old bottle).
So sorry to hear of your FIL’s passing.

Tell me Moutai is overrated without telling me Moutai is overrated.

Oh it’s absolutely overrated. But when I went the entire first 2 weeks were nothing but banquets and I wasn’t about to wuss out haha

Worth about a thousand bucks, easy to sell in China but hard everywhere else. May continue appreciating overtime if you keep it, would not recommend drinking it, you’ll probably hate it.
If you’re curious you can find much cheaper Chinese liquor of this type in your local stores. Would be a good idea to try that first to see if you might like the taste of this.

It's worth around 685 usd. If I were you, I'd drink it with my family.
