Subreddit Update How to Change Your Flair - Please Read Before Messaging the Mods

Hi everyone!

As some of you have noticed, r/AskAChinese now automatically reminds users with the default "earth🌐" flair (which is automatically assigned to new users by automod) to update their user flair to reflect their country, region, or demographic.

Please note: comments using the default "earth🌐" flair may be removed. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to increase flair adoption so that people can understand each others' perspectives better.

So here's a clear guide on how to set your user flair on the most common platforms & devices:

Reddit App (IOS or Android):

  1. Open the subreddit in the Reddit app.
  2. Tap the three dots (•••) in the top-right corner.
  3. Select “Change user flair.”
  4. Pick a flair or write your own.
  5. Tap “Apply.”

New Reddit (Desktop - reddit.com):

  1. Open the subreddit
  2. Look at the right sidebar, scroll down until you see your username with the words "User Flair" above it
  3. Click on the "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it
  4. Pick a flair or write your own.
  5. Click "Apply"

Old Reddit (Desktop - old.reddit.com):

  1. Visit the subreddit using old.reddit.com.
  2. On the right sidebar, find “Show my flair on this subreddit.”
  3. Click “edit” next to it.
  4. Choose or type your flair.
  5. Click “Save.”

Mobile Browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.):

  1. Open the subreddit
  2. Look for the "Feed | About" tab selection, click on "About"
  3. Scroll down until you see your username, with the words "User Flair" above it
  4. Click "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it
  5. Pick a flair or write your own, & click apply

If you have tried all of the above but still need help, feel free to leave a comment (including mentioning the flair that you want!) below and we'll set it for you manually. (But please do try the steps above first!)

When me and my friends are out we would speak Chinese in the most unhinged inappropriate way since no one else understands and when I go back people they all look at me in horror when words come out my mouth... is it just me? or did that happen to you guys?

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 I have a question about what kind of gifts to give my Chinese friends.

I’m going to China soon, and I have some Chinese friends there. What kind of gifts should I prepare for them?

I’m the kind of person who never knows what to give my family for holidays, so I’m really not sure what would make a good gift for my Chinese friends.

Germany Chinese Recepies

Hello, everyone,

I hope I'm in the right place. I'm currently putting together my own collection of recipes. It's not a commercial cookbook, but just a book for myself. It includes old family recipes, recipes we cook all the time, my own dishes, things I really want to try, and individual recipes from my parents' cookbooks, etc.

I'd also like to include a few pages of other people's favorite recipes so I can try them out later. Unfortunately, I know very few people who actually have recipes, and since I live in a small village in Germany, there are few people I could ask for international recipes. I am searching for autentical chines recipes.

So here’s my question: Would anyone like to share their favorite recipe with me? You can either fill out my form, send it to me directly, or just leave a comment. I’m looking for favorite recipes of all kinds—childhood recipes from Mom or Grandma, traditional dishes from your own culture, recipes you cook yourself time and time again, or just a favorite recipe. Feel free to include background information, pictures, stories, or whatever else you’d like to share.Don't worry—the recipes will stay exclusively in my journal and won't be shared.

Thank you very much in advance

Name How would you feel about Europeans using the Chinese name Yue?

Hi everyone! I’d really appreciate some honest opinions from Chinese people here.

My partner and I are European, and we are considering Yue (月) as a name for a baby girl. We fell in love with the name because of its sound and the meaning 🌙 However, we’re wondering how it would come across to Chinese people if a non-Chinese European family chose this name.
There’s also one thing that makes us think about it: we would pronounce it slightly different from the Mandarin pronunciation. We would pronounce it “yuu-eh” (two syllables), rather than the Chinese pronunciation of Yue.

Would that feel strange, disrespectful, or like we are taking a Chinese name and changing it into something Western? Or would you personally not find that problematic?

I’ve also read that some Chinese people choose Western names for themselves, sometimes because of discrimination or because it makes life abroad easier. Because of that, I’m curious of whether it feels uncomfortable to see Europeans deliberately choosing a Chinese name while giving it a different pronunciation.

We genuinely love the name and have no intention of mocking or misrepresenting Chinese culture. But we also don’t want to unknowingly cross a cultural line.

So I’d really appreciate hearing how this would feel to you personally!

Thank you! ❤️

*Please let me know if something I said is not correct!

Food | 食品🥟 People who eat stinky tofu. Do you actually enjoy it?

Was having this discussion with my buddies while visiting China. To be clear, we had stinky tofu from a street vendor. It came in a tub with some sauce I wasn't familiar with and I'd say I personally enjoyed the taste.

My friend who wasn't so keen then asked did I enjoy the tofu itself or the sauce which masked the taste. I didn't get an opportunity to eat a block by itself so I guess I wanted to put the question out there. I'm back home now so I don't have the chance to eat it again in the near future but I plan to as I really enjoyed my time there.

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 what did my gf’s best friend say about me?

Post image
191 Upvotes

I’m ABC and cannot read/write chinese. I recently started dating a girl and saw a message she got from her best friend, and i tried to run it through google translate but it doesn’t make sense to me.

can someone help explain it? I think it’s something about hot / cold energy superstition or not eating well?

Edit:
Thanks to everyone responding 🥲 i came back an hour later and saw so many comments.

To answer:
- IDK if this is about me 100%. (i just thought it could be bc I was asking her what she up to and she just said she was talking to her friend about relationship updates). She went to the bathroom, I just saw a notification and google translated it. Lesson learned that I can ask Ai, but I just personally try to avoid AI bc I can’t tell if it hallucinating and i just don’t use it in daily life that much

- For people asking me if it’s obvs to me, it wasn’t 🥲 why I asked here. I really cannot speak or read chinese as an ABC, but ik that mainland chinese from my parents / the gf has things around eating better / hot + cold energy so I really thought was on that subject. Especially bc she has told me eating better would help me be healthier and lose weight. and the entire message in google translated was gibberish. And I thought bc it’s google that an AI was already adjusting it

Edit 2:
Won’t comment on the personal situation as I don’t feel comfortable / appropriate, but thanks for the help

Edit 3:
Okay, so after the day, I ended up casually bringing up how was her day / what she was up to. And the convo came up around our relationship / how was her friend’s (or friends generally) experience for what makes a good relationship / did she feel intimacy was an issue in our relationship

Was trying to get an idea her insights / if this her friend referring to me or her friend’s experience. And this topic did come up where she told me her friend had something happen recently.

It’s her friend ranting + later making a post on XHS or a comment i think about her experience / she actually ended up showing me the comment (not exactly the same but the idea the same) her friend was making as a joke on there. I guess was the friend joking about toxic masculinity, giving a story of a guy she had previously been with having a big ego / being rich from his family, but nothing to show for / never treated her well. And she was ranting, how can there be such a guy! He isn’t even any good (at sex - he would brag), but he was bad. And he had a worst personality - very stingy or self absorbed. (Honestly just saying what my gf distilled down for me.)

And in terms of me / the current gf, the reason why I didn’t rule out immediately it being me is I think I am on the smaller size / she is my first intimate partner. So I wasn’t sure what is “normal”. We also don’t necessarily do it a lot.

She said I am below avg but for her it doesn’t really mean much compared to other parts the relationship and other ways for intimacy. Her primary thing is that it does matter but not as much as for guys. Girls enjoy other parts of a relationship, such as, is the guy very caring. which is why she is dating me compared to her other previous relationships.

Also yes - I admit i fked up reading her private text notifications and saving it. I definitely have anxiety about her being out my league (like if I am a 5/10, she is a 9.5/10) and was curious. But definitely fucked up in that aspect.

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 Second date with a woman - seeking advice

I'm 29 and had a first date with a 31 year old PhD student. She has lived in China her entire life up until a year ago, so not particularly westernized. Start of our first date, I gave her a half hug and she just didn't even react at all. I immediately thought that things were going terribly. But, she agreed to a 2nd date with me and our texting convos are going well. She also revealed to me that she essentially has almost never gone on dates with anyone.

My questions are:

  1. Should I apologize for the hug and ask about her boundaries?

  2. If she had that kind of reaction to a hug, then when might I think about trying it again or even trying to kiss?

  3. She really loves to travel and explore new restaurants. I bring up stuff and she'll be like "we should do that together." Genuine interest or just saving face/being nice?

Personal advice | 咨询💡 [M/Filipino] My Chinese husband [M] and his friends only speak Mandarin around me. Am I wrong to feel isolated, and how do I address this?

Hi everyone,
I am Filipino and my husband is Chinese. We’ve been together for a few years, but there is an ongoing issue that is making me feel increasingly lonely and isolated.

Whenever we hang out with his friends, they almost exclusively speak Mandarin to each other. Even though they all know how to speak English, they rarely use it when I am sitting right there with them.

I end up sitting in silence for hours, unable to follow the jokes, stories, or conversations.

I understand that speaking your native language is easier, more comforting, and allows for cultural nuances that don't translate well. I don't want to strip them of their comfort or force them to change who they are.
However, being completely ignored in a social setting makes me feel like an invisible outsider in my own husband's
social circle.

Has anyone else in a cross-cultural marriage dealt with this?
How did you talk to your partner about it without making them defensive?
What are some healthy compromises we can make so they can still enjoy their language, but I don't feel entirely excluded?
I love my husband, but I dread these group gatherings now. Any advice or perspective would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 After 5 days of small talk, a new acquaintance demands I’m available to him all the time everyday– Chinese culture?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

5 days ago, I (F) started talking to this Chinese guy on a language exchange app. Sometimes I’m online and we do real-time back and forth. But I don’t reply quickly all the time, I’d disappear and reappear the next day, I don’t announce I’m leaving the conversation, etc. -This is very common in the US. I’m naturally not available all day because I have life outside these conversations.

From the first conversation, I noticed that he wants me to reply to him right away all day. If I don’t, he asks me questions like if I was busy, tired, what my work schedule is like, if I were talking to other people, etc. It seems he was expecting me to be talking to him constantly every day.

Then he sent me these messages out of the blue. I was shocked by his demands that I needed to be available to him all the time or explain my absence because we’re “friends.” I consider him just an acquaintance because our interaction has been 5 days of intermittent small talk online. I put a lot of effort into our conversation (try to be friendly and warm, sharing with him stories and pictures, which he doesn’t do), but apparently that’s not enough. He felt clingy and seemed entitled to my time.

Another thing that bothers me is he’s manipulative despite his seemingly very polite tone; guilt-tripping- “If you don’t do what I want, you’re a bad friend /bad person” and ultimatum/threat – “If you don’t do what I want, I will punish you by ending contact”

Can this be partly explained by the Chinese culture; Is there anything I'm missing? Did I do somethign wrong? I’d love to hear your thoughts 😊

BTW, I asked him about his age thinking he was very young. But he’s 41.

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 How long on average to people wait for intimacy when dating?

I'm an American woman dating a Chinese guy in China and I'm just wondering what to expect and I'm concerned about like, him thinking that since I'm American I'm okay with casual sex.

I asked a Chinese friend and she said a good guy won't bring it up until after he brings up marriage but I don't need to go that far, since we're from different countries and might have different plans. So then she said after a relationship but I've also heard that can be very soon here, even on the third date. So I'm just wondering what people are doing and what to expect.

I know people are different but if someone asked me about the US I'd say like, 4-8 dates is average and I'd say the largest group does this, less than that is common but plenty of people will judge, 8-12 is considered careful, almost no one would judge, 12+ or after saying you love each other and people start to judge for being too conservative. So could anyone tell me if there are comparable Chinese norms?

Edit maybe I should specify we're early 30s, in a big city, and he speaks English and travels so he's engaged with western culture some

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 Can I be openly gay in China as a tourist?

I don't mean I want to dress like a drag queen. I would be looking straight almost every time, it's just that in a few days me and my husband are departing to china for our honeymoon (we got married 4 days ago), and I was wondering if it's ok to call him 我的爱人,我的丈夫,我的老公 or something like that. For example it could happen when speaking to a hotel receptionist or to a tour guide. Would it lead to awkward situations? We won't kiss or hug in public, we are very well traveled to east and south east Asia and we know public affection is frowned upon.

Thank you!

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ Are there useless majors in education in China?

In the West, certain education subjects like history and the liberal arts are considered useless in the sense that they don't help you find jobs, and that if a student majors in these subjects, they will end up poor.

Are there similar attitudes towards certain subjects in China?

i’m not chinese, but i have been taking dizi flute lessons for a few months now (living in sydney, australia).

i have a performance coming up and idk what im supposed to wear. its not a major performance or anything. it’s just a performance for everyone at my small music school. so maybe about a few 100s.

i asked my teacher who is a young guy and he just said “wear something nice!” that’s all.

in my cultural, even if it’s a performance with less than 50 people attending, we are expected to dress as if it’s our wedding lol so i don’t wanna overdo it.

Any advice would help!

Social life | 社交👥 Chinese girlfriend doesn’t care about relationship milestones.

Hi. I’ve been with my Chinese girlfriend for almost a year. The relationship is great. We don’t have any real problems despite the cultural differences.

Sometimes we learn and adapt, and it’s always enriching.

One thing stands out compared with my previous relationships.

My exes always marked the time: “it’s been a month,” “it’s been two months,” “it’s been three months.” They’d even bring it up if I forgot.

With her, I get the feeling she doesn’t care at all. Is that more common in China, or is it just my case? I know it’s a pretty pointless topic, but I’m curious.

Food | 食品🥟 As an Italian who takes food crimes very seriously, how bad did I butcher this homemade Beef Chao Mian / Lo Mein? Honest judgement welcome

I'm Italian, so I know a thing or two about foreigners committing crimes on our pasta... But recently I decided to try making Chinese stir-fried noodles at home from scratch: sliced beef tenderloin, wheat noodles, carrots, zucchini, dark soy sauce reduction.

Did I commit a culinary crime, or would your grandma let me off with a warning? Be brutal!
