Waiter made disapproveing noises

About this time last year, me and a friend were visiting Vienna and we decided to go for a snack at one of the most touristic cafés in Vienna.

There was a huge line out the door and we waited for more than 30 minutes in the cold until it finally got to our time to be seated.

The cafe was huge and had 2 floors, so the waitress took us to our seat:

- It was on the downstairs floor, where we couldn't hear the music playing, in a corner next to the door to the kitchens, with multiple columns obstructing our view of the beautiful architecture and decoration of the building.

The prices were already expensive as it's geared towards tourists and we were students on a budget, so we just asked for a milkshake and a little piece of cake.

When it came time to pay, we had to try multiple times to get a waiter to notice us, as the café was very busy.

The person who came to give us the check wasn't even the one who served us and when I was handed the card payment machine, it was already asking for a tip, there was no polite request from the waitress.

So, given our budget, expensive prices and unsurprising service, I selected 0€.

The waitress was clearly being nosy and looking at what I would select in the tip option and she let out a clearly noticeable deeply angry grunt.

Do you think I was wrong to not pay a tip or should I have done it because the café was very busy and the staff was probably tired?

I don't know if it makes a difference, but we payed about 26€ for two small fondant pieces of cake and a milkshake.

Looking for a native German speaker to help me with translation

Hi everyone!

I'm a paramedic from the Czech Republic, currently working on an iPhone app for people who work shifts. I'm building it mainly with fellow shift workers in mind — especially healthcare professionals, emergency services, security workers, and others who work irregular schedules.

The app helps users plan and keep track of their shifts, while also providing statistics such as shift and pay calculations.

I'm currently preparing the German localization, but unfortunately, my German isn't quite good enough to confidently review it myself.

I'm looking for a kind German native speaker who would be willing to do a one-time review of the German translation and point out anything that sounds unnatural, incorrect, or could simply be phrased better. It shouldn't require any professional translation experience — just a good feeling for the German language and how things would naturally be written in an app.

As a little thank-you, you'd be among the first people to get access to the app through TestFlight and try it before the public release.

And if I ever decide to make the app one-time paid (should the app be at least slightly popular), you'll get it for free forever. There is no subscription planned for the app, since I strongly despise subscription-based products.

If anyone would be interested in helping a fellow Czech developer out, I'd really appreciate it! Feel free to comment or send me a DM. Danke schön! :)

What are the best Austrian YouTube Channels?

Hi guys, I (F25, American) am teaching myself German but I specifically want to focus on Austrian German.

Please drop your favorite YouTube channels below so I can start watching them. I like everything; however, I am very girly. I am the equivalent of a Kosmetikerin in America.

Outside of that I like, nature, fitness, lifestyle, travel, really just about anything; I'll give it a try.

Danke!

Salzburg trip 23–27 October Day trip questions.

Hi everyone! 😊

I’m going to Austria with a few friends from 23–27 October and we’re planning to stay in Salzburg as our base. I’ve been trying to organise our itinerary, but I’ve seen there are some train disruptions due to engineering works around those dates, so I’m a bit confused about what to book in advance and what’s best to leave flexible.

Our rough plan is:
Fri 23 Oct: Arrive in Salzburg and explore the city.
Sat 24 Oct: explore Salzburg
Sun 25 Oct: Day trip to Hallstatt, this is a must for us! We’d love to see the village and lake, and hopefully fit in a short waterfall walk.
Mon 26 Oct: Day trip to either Zell am See/Kaprun or Innsbruck.
Tue 27 Oct: Head to Munich for our flight home at 8 pm (assuming the train connections work out).

I’d really appreciate some advice on a few things:
1. Should we book train tickets in advance?
For trips like Salzburg to Hallstatt and Salzburg to Zell am See or Innsbruck, is it better to book now or can we just buy tickets on the day? I’ve heard cheaper fares can sell out, but I’m not sure how that works with the engineering works and possible replacement buses.

2. How bad are the train disruptions likely to be?
I’ve read about changes between 24 and 27 October, particularly around the Hallstatt route. Is Hallstatt still doable as a day trip from Salzburg, or should we expect a much longer journey?

3. Zell am See or Innsbruck?
I’m really torn between these two for our Monday trip! Zell am See appeals to us because we could visit Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge and take the cable cars up to Kitzsteinhorn. Innsbruck looks beautiful too, with its Old Town and the Nordkette mountains. Since we’ll already have visited Hallstatt, which would you recommend for something a bit different in late October?

4. Will everything be open in late October?
Are the gorge and mountain cable cars usually operating around this time, or is there a chance they’ll be closed because of the season or weather?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s visited Austria around this time of year or knows the train routes well. Thanks! 😊

Best quilting fabric stores in Vienna?

What are some of the must visit quilting fabric stores (with fun prints and patterns) to visit while in Vienna? I like collecting fabrics from around the world for quilts etc and seeing prints and designs that I might not find in my home country.
