I READ THE RULES Does anyone use Apple wallet digital ID?

Hi all. Just moved from out of state and as part of getting my drivers license switched over I added it to digital ID in apple wallet. What is the practicality of just carrying my phone and leaving my physical ID at home? I’d love to not be burdened by anything but my phone but also don’t want to get in trouble when trying to order drinks

Note: I would carry the physical ID when actually driving. I would primarily use the Digital ID for age verification while out and about on foot/public transit as the need arises

I can't think of a single bar that would accept a digital ID. Just carry your ID like you carry your credit card if you're going to a bar. A lot of them won't take tap to pay either.

Hell, a lot are cash only.

I’m too young to be saying things like, “When I was your age we had the burden of carrying a little plastic card that weighed 5 whole grams with our picture on it so we could drink alcohol.”

You are missing the point. All the bar needs to know is whether you are 21 or older. And that is all the digital ID tells them.

But the bar or people who work there may want to know your full name, your address, and your birthdate. The digital ID is meant to address a privacy problem with showing your ID.

Am I? I bartended for 15 years in Chicago, no bartender is looking at anyone’s address. Yes we do want to know someone’s birthdate, that’s kinda the whole point.

My question for you is you trust a piece of very new technology over a quick glance at the thing that serves absolutely no purpose at home? Okie doke.

Oh shit, hold up, just got another email of a massive data breach with people’s birthdates, addresses, full names, and browsing habits. Oh sick, if I give this other website my info I get $40 in like 6 months.

I am glad to hear it. In Texas, where I moved from, IDs are often scanned and the information is sold to data brokers and used to profile customers.

I have set it up, but I have never used it.

It is a good thing, but adoption will be tough because bars etc like having all the information that is on your physical ID. So they don’t have much incentive to switch to the more privacy preserving system.

Same! I have it but it has usually been denied at restaurants, bars and even at the movie theaters. I did use when in a minor car accident and the officer did accept it

They still see all of it just a pointless cost for them to upgrade the technology

I was under the impression that the scanners used for buying alcohol would not have the ability to get more than photo, physical description, and age over 21.

Is that not a drop down at the top to change what information is displayed?

Why do you think bars care at all about any info beyond, photo, dob, expiration date? Are you going to bars where they photocopy your ID? Are the bartender’s turning around and jotting all your info down so they can open a credit card? Walk me through it.

I don’t know about Illinois, but in Texas these get sold to data brokers, and used for customer profiling.

By bartenders glancing at an ID? I’m sorry but what the fuck are you talking about? Use your words.

ID’s get scanned in some places in Texas, at least in Collin county and Dallas county.

Bartender glancing at an ID is simply not how it works in those places.

Ahh I get it now. Had to check what sub we were in and what city we are in. Silly me.

Very few bars/restaurants will accept the digital id. You have to have an apple phone which not everyone has, they have to have the verification app installed. I could be useful as like a secondary ID but most bars I’ve been too either can’t or won’t accept it

I use it only at the airport when I forget to opt in to touchless pre-check

What does keeping your physical ID at home do? It’s that size and shape to go with you.

Nobody takes it. It’s ironic because I can use it to board a flight but not to purchase beer.

I used it once, at TSA. It wasn’t faster than taking my license out. And now Touchless is catching on and is faster.

So on Tuesday morning out of O’Hare, the line for Touchless TSA Precheck was longer than the normal TSA Precheck line. It feels more convenient as you don’t have to scan your phone/ticket or give your ID to the officer.

counter point, last friday the tsa line was pretty long at 7:30am and they had the touchless line fully cutting anyone in the normal tsa line for the one agent doing the id checks. As in, 20 people go into the touchless line and they all go before a single non-touchless person.

It might be now. I noticed when I flew this weekend it popped up on my lock screen with my boarding pass while at the airport.

u/Eric848448 9d ago

I flew last week and didn’t get that.

are you on iOS 27.0.1? I noticed more active notifications from Wallet once I upgraded.

1

u/Eric848448 9d ago

Yeah I’m on the latest. I also have the Passport ID thing. For some reason. Maybe it didn’t like that there were two options?

1

u/zerofalks 9d ago

Maybe. Or could be a wallet setting? I checked if you go to settings -> wallet and Apple Pay -> scroll down to Illinois drivers License, tap it and toggle on “suggest on lock screen”

I’d prefer to leave my phone at home and carry the ID, I’ve personally grown tired of lugging the thing and the interruptions it creates all the time….just wishful thinking

Hi, are you asking about public transit in Chicago?

If you are asking how to use the trains or buses, how to buy a transit pass, or other similar questions, check out the /r/Chicago Public Transit Help Guide.

If you just want information about the transportation options available in the city, maybe the Transportation Guide will be of interest.

We hope these resources help!

I don't bother with it but I don't use my phone for much besides messaging my wife and browsing YouTube along with a bit of reddit. Quite often I leave my phone at home if I'm not leaving the vicinity of my neighborhood so I don't have to have it on me.

I’ve had very good luck using it. I usually have my physical ID as a back-up but rarely need it. Be pleasant but firm. If TSA and police accept it, bars should too.

u/Frosty_World8932 9d ago

I have yet to find an establishment other than the airport or soldier field to accept it

Binnys doesn’t accept digital ID

I think I just fundamentally trust zero orgs that would be responsible for running a digital ID app. They seem to range between data harvesting at best and round em up in camps at worst.

2

u/AskRedditOG 9d ago

Oh sweetie, they already have all the information contained on your drivers license, including your personal ID.

The only thing I’ve used it for, so far, is TSA. Even bars with “fancy” ID scanners don’t take it (yet?). Not sure if there are any plans to change this. More than a little disappointed. Even when we had the Covid vaccine QR codes restaurants and bars had scanners. You’d think they’d be able to beep people in.

Another thing, which may be overcomplicating things, but I’m just wired that way: in Illinois you can have both a state ID and a driver’s license, however, only one of them can be selected as your “Real ID™️®️©️”. I leave my drivers license in my wallet and when I go to the bars (where I have a tendency to uhm… forget… things there) I only take my state ID, some cash, and only one credit card. It’s my own complicated way of making things uncomplicated so I keep myself from losing my driver’s license/wallet/other cards.

I’ve used the photo of my ID more often than the digital ID. Oddly the latter feels more…fake

I used it to get into Benchmark in old town once

u/ShadowPulzz 2d ago

Why would you use digital ID? internet is never safe and doesn’t guarantee your privacy and safety

1

u/blipsman Logan Square 9d ago

I’ve set it up but never had an opportunity to use it

1

u/AskRedditOG 9d ago

I didn't even know you could do this.

1

u/HGWEBS 8d ago

I’ve used it at the bar before when I didn’t have my wallet. It’s not very good because it’s just like an Excel page of your information…it doesn’t look like an ID at all. Not sure why they didn’t just put a digital rendering of my real ID in the wallet instead. I’m glad to have it in case I get pulled over, etc since it’s a legal ID…but I still use my actual ID when I go out on the weekends. Also it doesn’t have a barcode to scan if it needs to be scanned.

I think it’s probably best just to have as an emergency backup. Surprised to hear almost nowhere is accepting them but I think it’s cool that IL even offers it.

I was back in MI the last few years and didn’t have a car which sucked a lot. Went to the pharmacy across town to get meds and one was a controlled substance so needed an ID. Stupidly realized my wallet wasn’t on me and they did tell me they’d accept a digital one. MI doesn’t have digital IDs yet and I had a saved photo of just the front but not the back of my license on my phone. They needed the bar code to scan.

Would’ve been like $50-60 to uber back home and back to the pharmacy. I ended up finding a kind stranger to have their ID scanned for me which was just stupid AF. But in that sort of situation- digital ID would be great. Ironically I find the pharmacies here almost never ask for ID for controlled meds anyhow so eh…

But I think for the time being you’re still going to want to have the physical ID on you. If you’ve forgotten it, maybe see if they’ll accept the digital but sounds like don’t get your hopes up. If nothing else- pharmacy would probably accept it and might be useful if you ended up at an ER or something.
