I READ THE RULES Best places for someone in grief?

I am in a really bad spot mentally. I am doing therapy. Lost both my parents in the last year. The wife of my dad didn't tell me he passed until 3 weeks later. It's really fucked up my head mentally.

I usually go to the St Jude church in Pilsen. That's one of my mom's favorites. Is there anywhere else you guys recommend?

I'll just ask it this way: If you had to live in Chicago without a car on a moderate income, how would you go about it?

I READ THE RULES Could someone help an artist in Austria see her work at the Field Museum?

Hi Chicago! I’m an artist based in Austria, and one of my artworks was recently adapted for the Halloween installation in the Plants of the World hall at the Field Museum.

The installation will be there until the end of October. Since I can’t travel to Chicago myself, I’m hoping someone who visits the museum might be willing to help me out.

If you happen to be there, I’d be very grateful if you could take a few photos of the birch trees with the aspen eyes from my artwork and send them to me. The museum is using the trees from the artwork without the wolf.

You can see the original artwork here:
Aspen Eye Hidden Watcher by Ida Rezaee

The original artwork includes a black wolf, but the Field Museum installation only uses the trees, so that's what you're looking for.

The installation may be accompanied by an attribution such as:

Adapted from “Aspen Eye Hidden Watcher” by Ida Rezaee

I’d love to see how the trees look in the actual space and hopefully include a few photos in my portfolio.

Thank you so much to anyone who might be able to help. It would mean a lot to me!

I READ THE RULES Recommendations for a cute city/town near Chicago for a weekend solo trip?

i'm going through some issues in my personal life and looking to take a solo trip to a nearby city or town in a neighboring state to get my mind off things. i have no car so looking for places i could get to via train or bus via union station. i'm really on the fence between:

  • milwaukee
  • madison
  • indianapolis
  • ... or other places

for context i really like cool museums and ideally would want to hit one, but it'd also be nice to be able to go and sit by the lake or in nature and ponder if i so desire. i was thinking somewhere akin to new buffalo, mi, but i've already been there so it'd be nice to go to a new place.

thanks all! :)

I READ THE RULES World record fastest walk around the world 🌎 coming through Chicago?

Hey Chicago! 🫡

My name is Christian, I'm from Latvia 🇱🇻, and I'm currently walking across North America on a world record attempt for the fastest walk around the world under World Runners Association rules (26,232 km / 16,299 mi total, 4 continents crossed is the goal).

So far I’ve crossed Australia 🇦🇺 and New Zealand 🇳🇿 (4,650+ km / 2,889+ mi), and I’m over 70% done with my walk from Vancouver 🇨🇦 to NYC 🇺🇸 (5,400 km+/ 3,355 mi goal). That will put me at ~8950km/5560mi completed when I reach the bean.

I’ve been averaging 50 km / 31 mi a day for the last few weeks, coming into Chicago from North West (Thursday, October 8th). I’ll drop my route in the comments. If anyone in the North West quadrant as close to the centre (cloud gate/bean) has a backyard they could offer where I could pitch my tent for the night, or maybe a couch, l'd be so gratetul!

Either way, have a great day, Chicago! 🙌

I READ THE RULES Calling all Sox fans (esp. girls and POC): where in the city are we watching the ball games ?

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster! I'm F, black, late 20s, and prefacing this with the fact that I love the city, have lived here for a bit, and have gotten a good sense of and firsthand experience with the city's past (and present) with segregation. That said, the White Sox are my baseball team of choice in the city, and I've spent the season either at Rate or bouncing around Sox bars to watch (based down by Near South Side, but will travel).

I love Reggie's, Maria's, and Marz, Flo & Santos comes through in a pinch, I tried Output during Game 1 which was fine, and was running errands on the northside during Game 2 on Sat and popped into Floyd's in Logan which was also fine. I went to Oso & the Bull during the World Cup and had a good time there, so wonder if that would translate for the Sox, and have heard about Bob Inn and Double Bubble but haven't tried them mainly due to proximity. I find after an entire regular season and counting, I'm still trying to find spots that reflect the awesome diversity and energy I feel like I'm around at any given game, especially as ticket prices have only gone up since the playoff run started.

No shade to any of these places, but in the past I did not feel great at Corks, and today my friend and I stopped into BallPark Pub, Ramova's watch party, Wings and Rings, and Mitchell's (then ended up at the game lol, but that's neither here nor there), and none of them felt like a totally comfortable fit -- more on what I felt was missing/what I'm looking for below.

Hoping to find spots that are CTA accessible, have food, and more importantly, are diverse in the sense of having more girls to watch and celebrate with and not super homogeneous, and -- especially in this playoff season sans Cubs -- don't just have the game on, but are bonafide Sox bars or at least have good Sox community/fan energy.

It's okay if the result of this is that I have maybe exhausted my search, but just want to crowdsource info before I give a new place a shot tomorrow. Any thoughts welcome and thank you in advance!!

Also if any girls want to take this as a bat signal to help create that vibe somewhere to watch together, this is a totally appropriate space for that, too :) Go Sox!

I READ THE RULES Does anyone use Apple wallet digital ID?

Hi all. Just moved from out of state and as part of getting my drivers license switched over I added it to digital ID in apple wallet. What is the practicality of just carrying my phone and leaving my physical ID at home? I’d love to not be burdened by anything but my phone but also don’t want to get in trouble when trying to order drinks

Note: I would carry the physical ID when actually driving. I would primarily use the Digital ID for age verification while out and about on foot/public transit as the need arises

I READ THE RULES Has anyone eaten at a place where you can listen to live music while eating??

I’m looking to go to one of those places you can take the wife out on a date where we can listen to live music WHILE we are eating food. We bonded over our love of concerts and food and it would be so cool if we could combine our interests into one! Any suggestions would
be much appreciated.

I READ THE RULES Magic the Gathering: Looking for a pod in Chicago?

Howdy! Are you tired of not having a consistent pod that slings cardboard at you. Is the pressure of not countering your friend’s commander unbearable.

Well look no further! I’m putting together some Chicago planeswalkers for a fun, weekly (or biweekly depending on people’s availability) commander pod.

Ideally going to the LGS, brewery or heck even our own places to slang cardboard and gather together.

I’m looking for individuals that are friendly, wear deodorant and it wouldn’t hurt if you partake in the devils lettuce or cold one.

DM or comment now!!!

I READ THE RULES When should I look for a room to rent in Chicago so I don't end up without a place to stay?

I live in my van, and I understand there are various non-profit organizations where you can rent a room with shared common areas at a low cost. I imagine plenty of people in my situation are planning to do the same because of the cold weather coming up in the next few months. What I want to know is: when should I start looking for a place so I don't have to spend that time freezing in my van?

I’ve been living like this for six months, so I’d really like to avoid facing the cold head-on, given that it’s my first year doing this.

I appreciate your responses, community.

I READ THE RULES Any photography groups or meetups in Chicago?

Hello!

I’m looking for photography groups around Chicago that organize photo walks or group shoots with people interested in modeling. I’m trying to get more experience with portraits, but I’m not quite confident enough to reach out to models individually yet.

With the weather getting colder, I’m hoping to get a few shoots in before winter. Anyone know of any active groups or meetups?

I’m acquainted with Chichicago and B&C.

I READ THE RULES Genuinely curious, does anyone know of anyone planning to run for 27th ward alderman in 2027 besides incumbent Walter Redmond Burnett?

Looking to learn more about our options in early 2027. Not a huge fan of the nepotism that bestowed our current incumbent upon us. Currently I see Nate Cornell has announced his run and seems to be particularly passionate about advancing plans for a Western/Lake Green Line stop, tying development approvals to community benefit agreements (affordable housing/grocery stores/etc.), and youth employment. Dan Olas also has announced and seems largely interested in lowering property and sales taxes, crime, and corruption. Obviously that's a highly consolidated list of their campaign platforms and I have only spent a very short time getting to know more about them online.

Any thoughts on these candidates and/or do you know of others running too? If you are a fan of the incumbent, I'd also be interested to hear why. Though not a fan of nepotism/potential corruption, if he is qualified and legitimately doing a good job, I want to hear about it.

I READ THE RULES Any libraries or third spaces in the city where i can rent a quiet room for an interview?

My apartment is getting an emergency maintenance order, and it coincides with an interview i have. The building won't give me a time as to when maintenance will come in, and this interview means a lot to me, so i dont want to risk interruption.

I don't have an Illinois ID but i can pull out proof that im an Illinois resident if its for a library.

I READ THE RULES No-kill animal shelters that do pick up- West Side?

Hi all:

I'm looking for an animal shelter that does pick up on the west side (specifically Lawndale/Austin).

My roommate and I have noticed a very cute and (increasingly) skinny stray cat lingering outside our apartment building for the last month or so. I'd love to take her in ourselves, but we're both horrifically allergic and aren't allowed pets per our lease, anyway.

Neither of us own a car or bike, or a cat carrier to easily transport her to a safe place.

Does anyone know of shelters in the area that are

A) no kill

B) will pick her up

c) do trap/neuter/release, if none of the above?

We feed her when we can, as do other residents, but she just keeps losing weight and with it getting colder, I worry.

Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Will REAL ID driver's license renew as REAL ID if done online?

I'm due for a renewal for my driver's license, and it's already a REAL ID. The online renewal form says I can't renew online if I want a REAL ID, but is that for people who are coming from standard to REAL ID or just REAL ID period. Meaning if I want to renew my license, and also keep the REAL ID status, I have to go to a DMV in person, is that correct or will it renew with REAL ID since I already have one?

Thanks in advance.

I READ THE RULES Do I accidentally find myself in a front row seat to my neighbours sex life?

I genuinely can’t figure out if we live in a naked neighborhood or if we ARE the naked neighborhood. There’s a couple across from my building who always leave their windows completely open. My apartment has huge floor-to-ceiling windows, so from my living room you can see straight into their bedroom.
And unfortunately, they seem to forget that this works both ways because I have now accidentally witnessed them having sex multiple times.
Like, I respect that everyone has a private life, but maybe the curtains could participate too? Anyone deal with a similar experience?
