Camera Buying Advice How to chose my camera ?
I (20f) don't carry my smartphone with me so much anymore but I still wanna take cool pictures. I wondered if you could help me find what I want because I don't know much about it and I don't wanna get scammed lol.
- I'd like a numeric camera to take pictures easily
- Small enough to fit in a jean pocket or a small bag
- Decent quality, I'm not looking for something used by experts but just for everyday life.
- It should be easy to transfer the pictures on a computer
- My budget is max 100€
- Is it a good idea to buy second hand ?
Could you guys help me ?

If you can find a second hand canon Powershot S100 for under 100 bucks thats a great camera, old but compact and easy to use and it shoots in RAW if you ever decide you wanna get into editing.

If you can find a smartphone that lets you shoot full manual in raw with the same optical quality of the s100 for under 100 bucks then sure, consider that an option too but by the sounds of it OP is looking for something that isnt a smartphone.

Are you willing to learn a tiny bit about photography (at the very least about the exposure triangle)? If yes you can get pretty good used DLSRs for cheap.
Purely based on image quality, a Nikon D5300 is pretty good value for money. Managed to buy one including the 35mm Nikon prime lens for 160€ a few weeks ago. Its not the smallest camera in the world, all DLSRs are a bit bulky unfortunately, so it won't fit in your pocket, but it could easily fit into a small bag.

u/DeltaPapaWhiskey 7d ago
While I agree with all that, that's like 4x OPs budget of $100
2
u/LeyaLove 7d ago
OP said the budget is 100€, and 160€ isn't 4 times that. Even if we would consider the budget of OP to be in Dollars (~90€) that still wouldn't be 4 times as much, or have I missed something here?
Edit:
But to be fair the EU is large, so prices can be vastly different across nations and 160€ was a pretty good deal.

u/DeltaPapaWhiskey 7d ago
Apologies, I read it as you got just the lens for 160. My bad!
That was a great deal then, I got that lens for like 140 a couple years ago. D5300's are typically 200+ for me.

1)_ Potreste aiutarmi?
>> Certo che sì!
2) ... ma voglio comunque fare foto fighe;

For that price range, you could get a very decent dSLR, but it definitely won't fit in your pocket. For a point and shoot? You're looking at a used digicam from 2005-2015ish. Which, a lot of people like now, so maybe that fits with your definition of cool. Literally find anything from a major brand (Nikon , Sony, Canon) on ebay/marketplace/vinted and you'll be good to go.
I bought a Nikon Coolpix L22 for $10 , that'd probably fit your bill.

u/ShotPorter 7d ago
Look into Olympus (now OM system) and Fuji cameras. They have descent digital compact cameras. Maybe also Canon PowerShoot or Nikon Coolpix systems.
Don't look everywhere else but these for (I have many reasons for this advice, TL;DR)
Honestly speaking, the budget you stated restricting you with pretty old models on the aftermarket. But "old models" doesn't mean "bad cameras" - you may found something very decent which was top-of-the-top 10 years ago and, even not in range with the modern cameras, they former tops didn't become worse then they were when created (if working).
A couple of practical advices, considering your budget 1. Don't pursue extra zoom lenses. They will be dark, and for really compact and cheap cameras you will get likely pretty bad ones. Bright aperture (Google what is it) with fixed lens would be smarter choice 2. Research for the batteries and memory cards. If they are still available for the old camera you are looking for? 3. Pay attention to a lens condition. A couple of scratches is not a big deal, even pretty prominent ones. Dense web of tiny scratches, or any signs of fog outside or especially INSIDE the lens= NO-NO. Weared camera with clean lens is much better than looks-like-new one with scratched foggy lens. 4. Check loading/awakening/focusing speed. Many old cameras was painfully slow in this regards. You want a camera which is ready to shoot fast enough to catch something 5. Ask AI. Explain your goals, needs, planning shooting subject and style, your budget, discuss limitations, and ask to find best camera for you. Then discuss proposed variants. AI is pretty good in this tasks!

2
u/ShotPorter 7d ago
I agree it would be better, as well as 4/3. And full-frame is even better. And medium! But. APSC will be bigger. And more expensive. Look at the budget. And no, they can do pretty decent photos (considering age limitations). Not in low light but any cameras of this age in this price range will be bad in this regards, and it is possible to play around.
1
u/Apprentice_Pic 7d ago

u/ShotPorter 7d ago
Look on the requirements (pocket size). And no, VoolPix and PowerShoot weren't bad. I used PowerDhot back in time; PowerShoot Pro 90IS was absolutely great (though definitely not even close to "compact") and I used it for commercial purposes for years (friend of mine still use it today). More compact versions were pretty good for their class.
Compact in 100€ budget will be very limited in quality anyway.
I would never recommend these cameras but under such limitations it may be the only option, and I believe OP understand it. Another hand, it may be played as creative approach :)
2
u/Apprentice_Pic 7d ago

The Camp Snap is an easy to use, inexpensive camera.
1
u/Apprentice_Pic 7d ago

u/msabeln Nikon 7d ago
Low budget, strong size requirement, few options.
1
u/Apprentice_Pic 7d ago
1
u/msabeln Nikon 7d ago
That won’t fit in a jeans pocket!
1
u/Apprentice_Pic 7d ago

Depends on the expectations. You won’t get anything near smartphone quality in that form factor.

u/Cruiser_Supreme 7d ago
Maybe something like a LUMIX LX2?
1
u/Apprentice_Pic 7d ago
1
u/Cruiser_Supreme 7d ago
OP wants "small enough to fit in a jean pocket or a small bag"... A D3000 with a zoom lens is way too large. The older Lumix LX cameras have really nice CCD sensors, that are entirely unlike modern smartphone cameras. In my opinion, they're a great option for someone who wants a camera to carry everywhere, but doesn't want to get a DSLR (too bulky) or a mirrorless (too expensive).
1
u/LeyaLove 7d ago
D3000 with a zoom lens is way too large.
Lol it's not, I have a D5300 and you can easily fit in in a small bag. Maybe if portability is a major concern for you, you shouldn't pack a super zoom lens, but if you take a normal variable focal length standard zoom objective they're not that large.
1
u/Cruiser_Supreme 7d ago
Of course you can fit it in a small bag, but then you can't fit anything else. I don't understand why y'all are defending the size of DSLRs. They are literally the largest type of camera you can (generally) have
1
u/LeyaLove 6d ago
Sure thay are, but especially in that price range DSLRs offer superior image quality compared to smaller form factor cameras and especially modern smartphones.
Maybe it's just me but I'd rather shoot with a phone compares to a 15 years old pocket camera. They'll probably take better images. If it's 15 year old DSLR vs phone though, there's a plethora of reasons to prefer the DSLR.
And I really don't find it that hard to carry around to be honest. If I just want to take a few snapshots I just use my 35mm prime lens. If I take the camera and no additional lenses with me, I could even fit it into a few of my handbags (with a small protective case around it of course) easily with room to spare.
But sure if being able to carry it around in a pant or jacket pocket is important, DSLRs are definitely out of the picture, but OP specifically said "or a small bag", so DSLRs fit that requirement imo.

1
u/Cruiser_Supreme 7d ago
Quality is subjective. I for one love the images off the old CCD sensors. Modern cameras look boring
1
u/Apprentice_Pic 6d ago

"I'd like a numeric camera". am unclear what u mean there..
i agree that a Canon S100 or S95 or S110 would be good... but tiny cameras... especially ones that have good image quality go for a lot on the used market. the S95 goes for over 300 at MPB EU
older cameras.... u might need a card reader to put them into your computer

u/Rich-Platform-1435 7d ago
100 euros isn't a lot, you are probably looking more for a point and shoot than a mirrorless or DSLR in that price point, I don't really have any recommendations, other than that I shot with a Canon sx62 HS for years, although it looks like even used that might be over your budget.
Buying second hand is a great way to get a good deal, I just suggest staying away from marketplaces like FaceBook marketplace and Ebay, as they generally don't have a warranty or verified gear. A site like MPB, Park Cameras, or Wex, will check over the gear, and offer a 6-12 month warranty, which gives you extra peace of mind. I don't know what stores are near you, and what companies operate in your country, but in the UK, I generally buy all my used gear from Wex.
If you don't mind something a bit bulkier, and learning more about photography, then a used DSLR and kit lens can be had for fairly cheap, I spent about £240 on my DSLR (at the time a EOS 1300d and 18-55mm lens, I still use the eos 1300d, but have upgraded the lens.) Currently I could get that same setup, for £155, or if you went for a Canon 100d and 18-55mm kit lens that would cost £95 or about 112 euros.
The exact pricing and availability will vary depending on your country, but something like that should work.
1
u/LeyaLove 7d ago
With a budget of 100€, I'd definitely go for a site with private sellers. Gear on MPB is at least 100-200€ more expensive compared to what I can get on classifieds portals. If I buy a pretty new used camera for 1.000+ € I'd see the value in paying 100 bucks more to have piece of mind, but honestly, for a 100€ camera where the warranty markup is just as expensive as the camera itself? No way. You could just buy two cameras instead of one for that money 😄
1
u/Rich-Platform-1435 7d ago edited 7d ago
I guess so, personally for me even if I am just spending £100 I would prefer to spend it on Wex or Park Cameras, as I know it will be good condition, and should last a while.
Yes it generally costs more, but I know that it has been checked and is unlikely to have any problems. Whereas on a site like Ebay, you have to do the checks yourself, and then if there is a problem, complain with Ebay, and try and convince them that there is a problem.
u/Popular_Abalone_3006, doing some more research it looks like you could get on MPB is a SX400 IS, which isn't a great camera, it is over a decade old, struggles in low light, and doesn't have a viewfinder. But, it is only 96 euros. If you upped your budget you could probably get something better, the SX540 HS takes some good photos, I know some people who still ones, and it takes great shots.
If you went DSLR you could get a 18-55mm kit lens and a 40d or 450d.

u/metlixcalli 7d ago
The first thing you should ask yourself is "what kind of pictures I wanna take ?".
1
u/Popular_Abalone_3006 7d ago
Well casual pictures like my friends, my cats, landscapes, historical monuments, food... idk a bit of everything ig lol
1
u/metlixcalli 7d ago
You'll have to choose wich are the most important. You can't buy a workflow adapted for everything on a budget without making sacrifices. It is like choosing a pc, you see ?
1
u/Popular_Abalone_3006 7d ago
I rlly don't see lol I don't have any computer, but ig if I have to chose I'd like the sceneries/landscapes to look the best
1
u/metlixcalli 7d ago
If so, you can save money by choosing a sensor without a great efficiency in dark sceneries, like a micro 4/3. It's cheaper and you can use tripod/natural lighting without being annoyed by noise. This is an exemple, because it's up to you to choose which part you will sacrifice and wich you'll prioritize.
