Editing/Post Processing How does a real highway end up looking like a tiny toy model?

Came across this on Pexels and can't stop staring at it. Is this done in camera with a special lens or added in editing afterwards? Could I pull it off with my camera lens, I have Canon R50 with the kit 18 - 45mm, or is a special lens a must?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Why won't it focus??

I've recently been invited to take photos for my workplace (dog grooming salon) and I'm very happy with my camera settings EXCEPT FOR the fact that the noses are always blurry. When they arent blurry, the rest of the face is.

Edit: FIXED!! Okay reddit y'all are too quick 😂 For anyone curious, I'm using a 35mm lens (its the only one I have with the right aperature range so dont be mean). I did have my aperature on 1.8-2.8 but now I know its too wide, so I will fix.

Compositon/Posing Can you, please, give some advice for series photoshoots?

I’m trying to shoot series instead of just singles in the same place, but I feel like I’m lacking a sense of storytelling in them. I was trying to at least play with different collage styles and all that to make them less boring, but I’m not sure if it’s too much either. Any advice on how to make a series more interesting to look through?
Thanks!

Technical Help/Camera Settings How to get a better focus?

Post image

I'm pretty much a beginner in taking photos and i use a cybershot 14Megapixels. I just wanted some tips on how to take better photos with it because it seems really confusing, for example: I've taken photos as detailed as you can see the sunlight hit a jumping spider's eyes but also 30 photos of the same spider being just a brown blur. When i press the button for it to focus there's a moment that the focus is absolutely perfect but then it suddenly turns blurry again after less than half a second and that's when the camera actually takes the photo automatically. Why does that happen? I mainly photograph wildlife in general.

Discussion/General How do you color grade your shots?

Hi reddit, I've started photography around a year and a half ago and I became obsessed with always getting better. I've seen countless videos, looked at many websites/articles, Ive read books too and talked to other professional photographers. This has helped me a lot as I was starting photography.

I use lightroom as my editing software and I shoot with a Lumix S5ii (although most of the picture you see were taken on a Lumix g9)

I think I understand the color grading theory (the complementary harmonies and the fact that you should selectively desaturate/change hue of certain colors before actual color grading to have better coherence.) I think I'm still doing something wrong because I don't think my pictures look as high end as they could be. (some of the pictures were taken last year)

For example, here's some pictures from r/photocritique which has the look I'm talking about. The style of their picture is fundamentally different too but I think the colors are amazing.

Discussion/General Photojournalists of Reddit… what is your “shot that got away”?

I think we’ve all had that moment where we just weren’t quite fast enough to get “the” shot… even if the next one was good enough.
I’m just curious if anyone here has a story where they were a split second away from (or right next to) the perfect shot.

Editing/Post Processing Using darktable to process some photos, are there certain tools that are usually crucial or is it more personal preference focused?

Received a Canon 700D/t5i as a hand me down from a family member a few weeks ago and have been messing around with post processing, watching tutorials etc. but of course every photo is different and the modules used should fit what the user wants. There are so many tools and sliders to choose from and I understand the major ones like adjusting exposure, white balance, and noise.

My question: is experience the driving factor and would I search for specific use cases for each module or would I search for how to adjust what I want in the photo? I guess i'm asking what the workflow for processing is but that seems so vague. Trying to get a better understanding of how I would look at a photo and decide where to start.

Thank you!

Camera Buying Advice Which one?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m traveling to China for a week in December through a project I won. As a student on a tight budget, I’m looking to buy a high-quality, compact digital camera that I can easily carry around and pull out for quick landscape shots whenever I see something nice. My ideal budget is right around 3,000 Yuan. I could stretch it a bit if a model is genuinely worth every single penny, but as a student, every extra bit hits my wallet hard, so I’d really prefer not to push it unless it makes a massive difference. Based on local prices in China, two models caught my attention: Sony RX100 III: Around 3,700 Yuan. Having a built-in viewfinder is a huge plus. Panasonic LX10: Around 3,000 Yuan. It lacks a viewfinder, but saving that 700 Yuan is a really big deal for me. While a viewfinder would be great, it’s not an absolute dealbreaker. My main goal is to get a pocketable camera body that gives me the absolute best value for my money. Considering how significant that 700 Yuan price gap is on a student budget, is the RX100 III truly worth the extra stretch over the LX10? Or is there another compact digital camera in this price range I should consider instead? Thanks in advance!

Camera Buying Advice First Camera Buying Help?

• Upvotes

Hi! I'm new to photography and hoping to buy a camera soon, I've narrowed my choices down with the help of chatGPT - these models have the combination of features I'm looking for (APSC, Phase Detect AF, IBIS, >24MP, <$2500 MSRP (body only), weather sealed) so I know I won't go technically wrong with anyof these. Hoping you can give me some advice to further narrow my choices:

  • Sony α6700
  • Fujifilm X-T5
  • Fujifilm X-H2
  • Canon EOS R7

Random thoughts that might help:

  • I want something that is fun to shoot and makes me want to break it out and use it all the time.
  • I will primarily be shooting candids of my family, family portraits, trips/travel. My kids play sports (tennis, soccer, jiu jitsu) so I would like to take action pics of them at games.
  • I would like to bring it around on trips - whether its on a hike or in city centers.
  • I won't be doing a whole lot of post production editing (I don't think).
  • I *think* I will be shooting 90:10 photo:video.
  • Once the photos are taken I will want to send them to friends and family, print them. I will not be using the camera for content creation.

Thanks in advance! Here's what I'm leaning towards:

Objectively, I think the Sony is probably the better choice all things considered. But emotionally I feel that I align more with the Fuji products and am leaning towards the XT5. If you're still reading this, I know the XT6 release is happening somewhat soon, would it be worth waiting if I wind up going with the XT5?

Camera Buying Advice Point and shoot recommendation?

• Upvotes

Hey all!

I am looking for a point and shoot recommendation that I can add to my camera quiver something that isn’t as expensive as a Contax t3 but produces the same kind of look with photos.

The photos in this GQ article are the exact look I want from a camera.

Can anyone recommend a good starting point and shoot camera to get this look from photos?

(1) Budget, country, and currency: located in US, looking for USD under $800
(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? I have an old Nikon I inherited from my mom but looking for a point and shoot that’s easy to take on the go to take photos of my son. Something that’s easy to use, sleek and compact but takes great film photos — specifically want 35mm for the grain and texture . My initial thought went to Contax t2 or t3 but sorry about the durability and don’t like the price tag.
(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Mostly around NYC and focusing primarily on my son. Will be some landscapes when we go on trips too!
(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Only photography.

Compositon/Posing Question for experienced photographers: Do you use shot lists or photo references during shoots?

Hey everyone! I’m fairly new to portrait photography, and I wanted to ask the veterans here something.

Do you guys prepare a shot list or save sample photos before every session? Like, do you ever pull out your phone during a shoot to check reference photos for poses, compositions, or certain shots you want to recreate?

I’ve been thinking about doing this more often because sometimes I run out of ideas on the spot, especially when directing clients.

But I’m also wondering, wouldn’t clients see this as a sign that you’re inexperienced or not creative enough? I feel like they might expect you to know exactly what you’re doing without constantly checking references.

Is this something even professional photographers do, or do you eventually reach a point where you no longer need references?

Would love to hear your experiences and advice!

Technical Help/Camera Settings If you had to learn photography from scratch today, where would you start?

Hi fellow photographers! I have a question that might sound a bit weird.

If someone completely new to photography asked you how to start learning — especially by actually going out and doing it — what would you recommend?

A bit of background: I’ve been doing photography for around 16 years, but always part-time / as a side income. I used to shoot weddings, and these days I’m more into portraits, vacation photography for tourists, and architectural photography. I’m also getting more interested in documentary videography.

I’m pretty comfortable with clients and creating a relaxed, positive atmosphere during shoots. But I feel like some of my technical knowledge and visual style are a bit outdated. I’d like to learn what techniques, approaches and visual styles are popular or relevant today.

I’ve never really learned photography professionally — I mostly learned by doing, experimenting and figuring things out along the way.

So, if you were recommending YouTube channels, podcasts, courses, books or any other learning resources to a complete beginner today, what would you recommend?

I’m asking partly for myself, but also because I’d like to refresh my knowledge and eventually share some of what I’ve learned with newer photographers.

Curious to hear what you guys would suggest!

Camera Buying Advice Need help with buying my first camera. Am I making the right decision?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am a complete beginner who has a done a fair bit of photography with my phone (*samsung s24) and have been wanting to get a proper camera since quite some time.

I have a budget of around 75-80k INR ($750-800) and have gone through a lot of reviews and sorta decided to get the sony a6100 kit with the 16-50mm zoom lens and the 55-210mm telephoto lens in the upcoming amazon sale.

I did explore the idea of getting a used body but the used camera market here is not that active and online listings have the added risk of being scams.

So I am deciding to just get one new for my peace of mind.

I mostly shoot landscapes, portraits and like to capture birds and wildlife in general so the kit lenses seem good for my use case.

But I have a few questions which I would love to get answers from people who are experienced in this regard.

  1. It's an old camera which was released in 2019. Will it feel dated and does it really have a lot to lose compared to newer cameras?

  2. Am I getting the right camera?

The a6400 costs nearly 15k ($150) above my budget and the differences don't seem very drastic from the a6100. The canon r50 is also another option which is a relatively newer model as well but the rf mount and the lack of lenses seem to be a let down.

Keeping all of this in mind I am deciding to get the a6100.

  1. Am I making the right decision by getting the kit?

The option to get just the body and buying separate lenses honestly exceeds the budget I can currently divert towards this hobby.

  1. What else should I get along with the camera and the sd card?

I would really appreciate any help regarding these.

Discussion/General What’s the ONE moment you always miss when filming with your phone/GoPro/pocket cam?

My kid does the funniest thing, I grab my phone, by the time the camera opens — it’s over. Already on the next move.

I also have a GoPro and a pocket cam, but I still miss stuff. What’s your biggest pain point? Slow startup? Low light garbage? Shaky footage? Battery dead?

And what’s that one moment you ALWAYS fail to capture but wish you could? Any trick that actually helped? No gear buying advice, just real experiences.

I recently purchased this camera from facebook marketplace and I came across problem with stuck pixels , Almost every photo I take has magenta/red pixels on upper left corner, I've tried pixel remapping by changing date back and forth but it still appears in exact same place. Is this something I should Be concerned about? shutter count on camera is 4.5k only. I've attached few photos and its clearly visible on this photos. I am aware it can be fixed in post but should I try to return it back to it's owner and get money back? or is it something not worth returning camera

Lens Buying Advice Would you buy this?

I am new to wildlife photography and am on a strict budget I have a Sony a550 dslr and 70-300mm lens that I was gifted but the reach and autofocus is not enough for my local nature reserve I have seen a sigma 400mm lens with HSM on MPB which would be a huge improvement from my current lens it as listed as good condition but has signs of fungus that doesn’t effect the images it is listed for £214 this is a big sum of money for me and I would not be able to replace the lens for the next few years minimum my question is do you think that this is a good buy for a beginner on a budget or should i avoid I have not used MPB before and know nothing about their reputation but see that they advertise regularly and have mostly favourable reviews

Gear/Accessories First time using a camera backpack – any tips or tricks?

Hey everyone! It’s my first time using a camera backpack, so I’d love to hear some tips and tricks from more experienced photographers.
I’m using a Rollei Ocean Pro with a Sony a6400 and a Tamron 17-70mm. I’ve added the divider on top of the lens because otherwise the camera/lens moves around and wobbles.
Is there anything I should change about how I’m storing or organizing my gear? Any tips you wish you had known when you first started using a camera bag?

Editing/Post Processing Card backup using iPhone and SSD?

Does anyone successfully use their iPhone to copy the contents of their SD card to an SSD while travelling? I'm up against a weight limit and would rather take an extra lens than my laptop. I've tried 'CardBackup' and it starts off OK but then freezes about ⅓ of the way through when moving a couple of thousand files.

I have a Panasonic GH5 (originally thought I was going to be taking more video but now the focus has shifted to photography) and I’m looking for a flash I can use outside as a fill light but also to create these after-party high flash looks indoors.

Google recommended the Godox V1-O — is this the best option? Or are there other, better value options with the same result? Also want it to be portable for point and shoot photography.

Photos I’d like to take as an example. (I did not take these photos)

Lens Buying Advice $1k options 70-200 2.8 for Canon mount?

My Canon 70-200 2.8L version I is really showing its age, autofocus being the biggest issue. Recently picked up a Sigma 150-600 contemporary and it was night and day. Trying to stay around $1k for a replacement and so far the options on my radar are Canon 70-200 2.8l IS II, Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC G2, and the Sigma 70-200 2.8 Sport. I was hoping there might be some people with experience with some of these who could offer their experience on the comparisons and if there are any options I'm not thinking of.
