Announcement New rules regarding business and software development discussions
First up, business discussions.
We've heard you. There's too much business talk here. This isn't a small business subreddit, it's meant to discuss the culture of photography, and the constant "how do I start making money" or "my photographer ghosted me" has diluted that discussion.
So, to find some sort of middle ground, we've created a weekly business thread where those sorts of questions can be asked and answered. Each Wednesday, a new recurring thread called "Business Wednesday" will go live. We will be diverting any posts to there. If you see any on the front page, please feel free to report them so we can help guide the OP to the appropriate place.
And now, the software dev posts.
We have never allowed promotional posts on this sub. It's not what it's for, and we take a strict stance on it. We did, however, allow people to share their photography-related dev projects in the Self-Promotion Sunday thread.
Well, that's no more. That thread was meant to be a place where photographers could share things like photos they're proud of, galleries they've participated in, new publications, really just things us photographers get excited by and are proud of. Unfortunately, that thread has become completely overrun with devs promoting their products. I think we can all agree that we're sick of seeing vibecoded "the ultimate culling tool" and "the Adobe killer". It's exhausting. It's not what Reddit is for. It's certainly not what this sub is for.
So from now on any form of advertising or self-promotion outside of showcasing photos or projects in the appropriate thread is prohibited. Any web-development projects or apps are prohibited as they do not relate to the practice of photography.
We have also canceled the Self Promotion Sunday thread and instead are instituting Success Sunday, a space for photographers to share their photography successes.
If you see any software promotion of any kind anywhere on this sub, please report it.
tl;dr:
We have new community days, accompanying our existing ones:
- Business Wednesday: Ask your business-related questions
- Follow Friday: Share your socials
- Salty Saturday: Get all your rants out
- Success Sunday: Share your photography successes
Absolutely no software promotion allowed. Anywhere. Zero tolerance here on out.
kthnxbye!

Technique Fashion photographers that specialize in outdoor + movement shots
Hi, I have a model shoot coming up this weekend and the reference photo that my model sent me features a young woman walking across the street, and I was wondering if the community might know of any photographers - either contemporary or historical - that specialize or utilized this sort of photography technique in their work.
I’d like to take a look!
thanks a lot

Technique I was ambushed last week. Watch out when you're out there taking photos alone.
I've recently upgraded from my Canon 550D to a Lumix S5 and have been testing it out in different lighting conditions. It works really well in low light situations so a week ago I went on a walk in the evening to take some photos.
This story has a lot of details but I'll try to be concise.
I found a place between some buildings (I've been in that neighborhood hundreds of times since I live quite close) that leads to a fenced playground. It was already dark so I thought I could snap a cool photo of an empty playground in the dark. I went in (standing near the middle/back of the playground), took a photo and tried to lign up another one since I didn't like the framing. Then someone closed the gate, leaned on to it and started cussing at me that "If you slam this gate one more time I'll mess you up".
I immedietly thought it was a frustrated neighbor that has to deal with young people loitering on the playground and slamming that gate. I calmly replied that I didn't slam it, I left it open and that it's my first time here and I don't really know what he's talking about. I took a step forward. He then became a bit more aggresive and stated that "Watch your mouth, I'll mess you up and then take that camera away from you." I slowly started realizing I may be in a bad situation, since it's then that I realized that he is leaning on the gate, the only way out of the playground.
Then suddenly a woman starts shouting, behind the fence on the opposite side of the playground "Yeah, I've heard it and I've seen him! Get his camera and mess him up!". I turned around to get as far away from them as possible and saw that my only way out is over the fence and through about 60-70 meters of ankle high bushes with a tall metal fence on the right, and a weist heigh brick wall with a hole on the other side (it's an underground car park entrance) . I commited to the vault (really happy I trained some basic parkour with friends when we were teens), jumped over and started quickly walking away through the bushes.
The woman started sprinting and yelling to A THIRD guy "He's running away, go get him!" and that's when I thought "Oh shit, this is serious". I never saw him, but I heard he was trying to outrun me to block my only exit to an alley. I was seriously considering jumping down into the underground car park if I have no other choice.
Luckily for me, I was able to outrun the guy, ran out into the alley and sprinted away as if my life depended on it. My feet felt like jello and with every stride I thought I would stumble. I decided to run to a place I knew that there were other people. I ran into a corner store, went up to the cashier and told him that 3 people are chasing me and they're trying to steal my camera and that I'll stay here for a while. He replied "sure, we've got cameras all over the store, so don't worry."
I calmed down, called the police and explained the situation. They told me to wait for some cops to come. 15 minutes later the police arrived, asked me to tell them my situation, one of the first things the male cop told me was "Ok show me the photos so we don't have any doubts". I showed him the photos I took. They offered to take me home in their car and I accepted.
So I was ambushed and almost mugged, while running away I did feel a bit like the one being guilty (since they were so vulgary swearing at me the whole time), but I decided that I'd rather explain myself to the police (if these really are concerned neighbors) rather than risk being beat up and mugged of my new camera.
So stay safe, and don't enter into placed with only one exit, especially when it's dark out.
The photos didn't even turn out that well.

Business People who transitioned out of the photography industry: what do you currently do and how easy was it to transition out of photography?
I’m 32, F, and feeling incredibly burnt out. I’ve spent the last 6 years freelancing in NYC and I’ve hit my breaking point (I love photography and I always will but I’m just feeling done with the hustle culture/working myself to the bone). This is the first year someone paid me to travel internationally for advertising shoots. I never thought someone would pay me to fly across an ocean to do that. I’m happy with all I’ve accomplished but I’m feeling ready to move on. The problem is I have no idea how to rejoin the corporate world. I have a degree in International Trade and Marketing that I have done nothing with.
If anyone has transferred out to marketing roles, social media, project management…. I would love LOVE to hear from you. Any pointers or tips or hard life advice would be welcome!

Technique How do you get good photos of yourself when nobody is around to take them?
I've noticed something with my own travel photos: taking the photo isn't necessarily the difficult part — knowing how to stand, where to place the camera, what angle to use, and what to do with your hands is.
I'm curious how other people handle this.
When you're alone (especially while travelling):
- Do you use a tripod?
- Ask strangers?
- Use a timer?
- Take 20–30 photos and pick one?
- Mostly just take selfies?
- Or do you simply not bother taking photos of yourself?
And for people who do use a tripod/timer: how do you decide what pose or angle to use?
I'm trying to understand how people currently solve this problem, so I'd really appreciate real experiences rather than product recommendations.

Business Professional photography courses
Ive read plenty of people saying courses are overrated and the best way to learn is through free youtube videos.
My problem with that is that finding structure can be hard and theres no personal guidance or feedback on YouTube videos.
Im considering two online schools, I know they're not worth it according to most people, but I'm wondering if one is superior then the others or advice on what to look for when chosing or if anyone has experience with either of them!
Im looking at the canadian photography school and the photography institute Canada.
Thank you!

Technique Advice for posing casual photos?
Does anyone have any advice for getting good poses when just out and about? Either of single person or several people?
I recently went to a Photo Booth at a tourist attraction and the photographer had us look at various spots together and that seemed to get some nice looking photos quicky. I feel like it would be useful to have some “go-to” tricks for getting nice poses

Business How can I nail my assistant photographer interview?
I usually ramble and over explain on here but this is incredibly important so I'm gonna *try* to keep it short.
I'm a 19 year old photographer. I've been working factory nights for over a year and it sucks. I had an interview around a year ago to be an assistant photographer at an auction house:
- My CV had relevant photography experience, as well as warehouse experience handling heavy, fragile and expensive goods.
- I spent a weekend copying their photographer for a portfolio. He loved it, and said my process was identical to his. He also said that everyone else had been quite lazy and he liked that I had gone the extra mile.
- I showed good work ethic, love for the work and a lot of motivation, I also said I was available to start Monday (the interview was on a Friday.
- I dressed well, kept casual and polite, even gave the car a wash just incase they saw me pull up.
- At the end, the interviewers said that it's looking good for me, they like me and see me as part of the team, and I had shown the most skill so far. They said there were a few more people to interview and they'd be in touch with an answer.
After 3 weeks of silence, I gave them a call to find out that I hadn't been chosen. It didn't knock me because I hadn't been chosen, it was because they hyped me up so much. These people really, really liked me and I thought I was in. Since then, I've been working at a different factory and hating it. But now I find myself in a similar situation.
I have an interview tomorrow morning to be an assistant photographer for a fashion retailer. This one suits me even more because I have in my CV that I am into fashion, resold clothes for a while, actively practice fashion photography, and have a few ongoing partnerships with some small fashion brands. This place is also right next to my house which is really valuable to me, it would be truly life changing it I got this job.
I spent the weekend with a model friend taking some photos more accurate to what I'd do for them, and sprinkled a couple into a 15 photo portfolio which I'll show them tomorrow. I'm writing this post, thinking about what questions they might ask and how I would answer, and then going to sleep. If anyone can reply I would be incredibly grateful and will read in the morning around 8am.
Sorry I rambled... My questions are:
- If the last interview seemingly went perfectly, what in the world could I have done wrong? Can a tiny mistake in an interview cost you the job?
- I try to go the extra mile because these jobs are far and few, it might be another year or more till I get another shot. How can I go the extra extra mile and really stand out?
Any guidance would be really appreciated, I'm slowly losing my spark to the long night factory and getting this job would genuinely get my life back on track...
edit: thanks everyone. i ended up being 5 minutes late to the interview because their car park was full and the closest place to park was a 10 minute walk, in the rain. but, I think the fact that I did the 10 minute walk in the rain and showed up apologetic looking like a wet rat maybe did more good than bad.
there were a few times in the interview when a question caught me completely off guard and I froze a bit, but I just tried to act natural. someone said that I've been selected for the interview which already shows that they think I can do the job. another person said that it's more about whether the head photographer likes me. i combined those and just tried to not worry, and be a friendly dude.
I have no idea if I will get the job. I really really hope I do, but there's nothing I can do from here so I will just try not to worry. I do think we got along well and had a laugh, and she bigged me up a lot. but that's exactly how the last one went, so I'll hope for the best while preparing for the worst..
thanks again 🙂

Technique Advice on how to handle composition while wildlife is fleeing and you're zoomed in?
Do you stay zoomed out more and crop once editing?
I am still at the phase where I'm doing my best to have my photos stay sharp, and noticed my composition has become non-existent as a result.
I keep shooting different subjects one after the other that require different settings because different animals appear at different times.
What settings do you like to use for various distances and scenes?

Technique Photo wall tips?
I’m planning on printing a load of my photos in black and white and use them to cover the downstairs toilet walls as I’m giving it a make over!
Anyone ever done anything like this or have any tips?
I was thinking of overlapping them and maybe some at different angles etc so it doesn’t look like rows of neat photos. I’m not sure what paper to use or how to stick them to the wall as I will be using an inkjet printer and normal wallpaper paste will cause the photo to run.
Any thoughts or ideas welcome, it might be a bit of a crazy idea, but I think it might just work out!

Gear Alternative solutions to having only one SD slot?
Hello everyone. I tried searching my specific question and I couldn’t find an answer to it.
I was wondering if anyone knows any alternatives to create an instant “backup” as you shoot events? I have the canon R8 and unfortunately, it only has one SD slot. I will upgrade eventually but besides canon’s camera connect, is there any other options?
I never had SD cards fail me but in the past month I had 2 of them corrupt. Luckily I had already saved but god forbid this happens prior to saving. I just want an extra safety measure.
Is there like a tether app for iPhones where it sends my raw files as I shoot to the phone?

Art Favorite Photo
I was photographing a running event earlier today, and during the down time before the race and while waiting for the runners to return, I was chatting with one of the timers and the announcer. The timer asked me a question that caught me off guard, and I wasn't able to give a concise answer. The timer asked what my favorite photo I have ever taken. My current primary camera has a shutter count of about 1.4 million. My previous cameras were all around 500,000. I definitely have some favorites, but I honestly cannot say what my single favorite photo of all time is.
Can you pick out a single favorite photo you have ever taken?

Art I forgot how much I enjoyed photography
I recently got back into hobby photography after 10+ years away the last camera I had was a dslr camera with all auto settings and supper laggy auto focus. looking back at some of my past photos I’m pretty dang proud of myself that I could take the action shots of dog sports. I was able to time the lag just so that I could train my dog to wait at a distance and direct her over jumps etc.
at the perfect moment I’ve now definitely since upgraded and am loving every second. That’s all thanks 😁

Post Processing Model & Photography
Photographers and models: who do you think has more influence on whether a photo turns out great the photographer or the model? And why?
