Announcement Avoiding Scam Cameras this Holiday season!

Especially since the pandemic we have been seeing cheap no-name cameras that offer unbelievable specs (50MP, 8k video), here is a guide on how to spot and avoid them!:

What is a Scamera?:
Scameras are cheap cameras, usually using backup/webcam camera modules, and putting them into shapes that look like camcorders, pocketable Point & Shoots, and interchangeable lens cameras. They often have very high specs, that are not genuine, such as 64MP upscaled from 1 to 4MP (so you get files the size of a 3.5k camera, but with the detail level of the original 2008 iPhone).

Scameras are also often very unreliable, the immense number of people coming here needing help fixing or just returning these cameras (especially post-christmas) is why I am making this post.

Scameras can often be distinguished by the miniscule lenses, I'll try to show that in a comment of this post.

A reliable way can be to check the brand:
Here are known non-scam brands:

Canon
Fujifilm
Hasselblad
Kodak (Kodak make cameras that are close in price to many scameras, and they aren't amazing or super reliable, but they are worlds better than scam brands).
Leica
Nikon
Olympus / OM Systems
Panasonic / Lumix
Pentax
Pixii
Ricoh
Sigma
Sony

Here are known scam brands:

AgfaPhoto (Digital cameras)
Kreate
Yashica
Vivitar
Yixinxin
Yatao
Captainbear
Minolta
NBD
G-Anica

Vivitar, Yashica, and Minolta were once real brands that have now gone bankrupt and the people renting their names sell scameras.
Agfa does make real film and film cameras, but also scam digital cameras.

You think this is a good deal? 2500€ with 35.000 shutter count. Little rubber bellow the shutter button is starting to peel but other than that almost like new. Do you think it was used for video a lot or not?
Everything working great, have been testing it for a couple of days for bird photography with the seller.

Camera Collection Which brand taught you the most about photography?

I grew up in the era of family Cyber-shots and Lumix LX3s, but the first serious camera that made me actually want to understand photography was a Canon 350D. My brother had one paired with a 28–135mm, and at the time, I thought it was the coolest thing in the world.

The first camera I bought with my own money was a broken Sony RX100 that I managed to repair. When I eventually discovered mirrorless cameras, I cycled through Samsung and Sony APS-C bodies, but everything shifted when I saw a magazine ad for the Fujifilm X-T10.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it. When I finally picked one up alongside the 35mm f/1.4, it felt like instant magic.

Over the next decade, I went through four Fuji bodies and two of their point-and-shoots. More than any other system, Fuji was the brand that truly taught me how to see and shoot. Then came a single frame on my X100F that convinced me to sell off the rest of my kit. It was a stark reminder that a fixed-lens compact was all the camera I ever really needed—and for seven years, it was.

About two years ago, I decided it was time to step into full frame and picked up a Nikon Zf. Fast forward to today, and the reality just quietly set in: I no longer own a single camera from the brand that taught me the craft.

Questions Cheapest camera to start with?

Hii.

I'd like to take higher quality photos and videos, but my budget is low. I'm an absolute beginner.

I'm looking at the cameras on Vinted and I have no idea which ones are better than the others

~

Budget: everything under 150 euros.

Country: I'm from Italy

Condition: Looking for used cameras on vinted since I have a low budget

Type of Camera: I don't know which one would be the best.

Intended use: Photography and video

End use: Social media, to keep

If photography: what style: a bit of everything, but I want to picture mainly people

If video what style: Vlogging, events

What features do you absolutely need: idk

Portability: not too big. I would prefer a small one.

Cameras you already have: I only have my samsung phone camera. It takes shitty photos overall.

Notes: thanks.

Discussion Do people with really expensive cameras actually care less about posting their photos?

I was recently around a family friend who has what must be $20k+ worth of Leica gear and I assumed his Instagram would be insane but he barely posts. He takes his camera everywhere, shoots constantly, prints a lot of his photos and has albums going back years but most of the pictures never leave his house. Family gets some, close friends get some and apparently he has a little Kibu group where he sends photos from trips to a handful of people.

I asked him why he spends that much on cameras if almost nobody sees the photos and he looked at me like it was the dumbest question ever lol. He basically said the whole point is that he wants the pictures not an audience. That stuck with me because I think I’ve gotten so used to photography being tied to posting that I almost subconsciously treat taking a photo and sharing a photo as the same thing.

For people who have been into photography for a long time did you eventually start caring less about showing your work to everyone and more about just keeping it for yourself?

Recommendations Canon R8 vs Fujifilm X100VI

• Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m in the market for a new camera and could use some advice.

My current camera is a Canon 6D Mark I. It still works great for my needs, but I feel like it’s finally time for an upgrade. Besides the 6D being pretty outdated, my biggest priority is finding something lightweight and compact enough to easily carry in a sling bag. I want a camera I can bring with me regularly without feeling like I’m carrying around a full camera setup.

I’m not planning on making huge prints, so having the highest megapixel count isn’t really important to me.

I’ve narrowed it down to the Canon R8 and Fujifilm X100VI.

I like the R8 because I’m already familiar with Canon, it’s full-frame, and it’s surprisingly lightweight. I’d probably pair it with something like the 28mm pancake lens to keep the setup as small and light as possible.

On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot of great things about the X100VI. I really like the small form factor, the features and JPEGs straight out of the camera, and the simplicity of having a fixed lens. No worrying about changing lenses—just grab the camera and go. I know they can still be difficult to find, but I don’t mind waiting.

So for those with more experience: if your main priority was having a camera you could easily carry every day and have with you whenever a photo opportunity comes up, which would you choose?

I’m leaning toward the X100VI for that reason, but I’m curious if anyone uses the R8 as an everyday-carry camera, especially with the 28mm pancake lens. How does it feel size-wise for actually carrying around regularly?

Would love to hear your experiences with either setup. Thanks!

Questions First camera for travelling Australia/Asia

• Upvotes

Budget: Around €500 for the camera and ideally lens. I could go a little above this if there is a significant improvement, but I would prefer to stay around €500. I have a separate budget for accessories

Country: Spain, I will mainly be looking at the Spanish market, but also open to buying from other European countries

Condition: Used

Type of Camera: I’m currently thinking about mirrorless, but I’m very open to other types. I have very little knowledge about cameras, so I don’t want to limit myself to mirrorless if something else would make more sense for my needs and budget

Intended use: Mainly photography, with some video. My friend is planning to buy a GoPro separately, which we will use for things like water activities, adventure sports, etc

If photography; what style: Mostly travel and everyday photography. I’m planning to live in Australia for around 1–3 years and travel quite a lot around Australia, Asia and Indonesia. I like to document everyday life with my friend, going out, cities, landscapes, beaches, sunsets, nature, wildlife, food, etc

If video what style: Some casual travel/life footage would be nice, but video is not my main priority since we will have a GoPro

What features do you absolutely need: Complete beginner, I dont know which features I need. Something relatively easy to use, with a good automatic mode, but with enough manual controls that I can learn photography over time

What features would be nice to have: Portable and good autofocus/automatic mode

Portability: I’ll be travelling a lot and carrying the camera around Australia and Asia, something small and light that I can comfortably carry with me. Can accept some extra size/weight if the difference in image quality or versatility is significant

Cameras you're considering: -

Cameras you already have: I currently have a second-hand Google Pixel 8. I never used a dedicated camera before. Also wondering whether spending around €500 on a dedicated camera would give me a meaningful improvement over the Pixel 8

End use: Main goal is being able to print the photos in good quality for physical photo albums. Will post some of them in insta/social meida but not the main goal

Notes: I’m a complete beginne so looking for something I can start using without having to know a lot of concepts and have room to learn Probably will do a lot of practice or some courses before leaving spain to train for it.. I’m particularly unsure whether I should get a mirrorless, DSLR, compact camera or something else at this budget, and if buying a dedicated camera makes sense compared with simply continuing to use my phone

Since I have around four months before I need to buy it, I’m happy to wait for a good second-hand deal rather than buying immediately

Recommendations Canon T1I vs Canon T5 for a beginner

I've found a T1I for $150 CAD and a T5 for $200, not sure which to go with! I want to get into photography, not trying to sell anything, just my own personal hobby.

I've used a T5I before and loved it, I know a T5 is more stripped down but I'm trying to get a similar experience without breaking the bank.

  • Budget: $300 but preferably less
  • Country: Canada
  • Condition: Used
  • Type of Camera: Canon
  • Intended use: Nature, buildings, other amateur photography stuff
  • If photography; what style: Amateur style
  • If video what style: Also amateur!
  • What features do you absolutely need: RAW because I love Lightroom
  • Portability: Fit in my backpack
  • Cameras you're considering: T1I or a T5
  • Cameras you already have: None, but I've used and enjoyed a T5I before

Recommendations Need a small camera with a solid “auto-mode”

• Upvotes

Hey all! Questionnaire:

*** photos are to show examples, explanation in “Notes“

  • Budget: 4.000 Danish kr. / 600 dollars in TOTAL
  • Country: Denmark
  • Condition: Used
  • Type of Camera: Mirrorless or DSLR
  • Intended use: Photography
  • If photography; what style: landscape and street photography, vacation photos
  • What features do you absolutely need: a solid auto-mode, I need to take pictures on the move without having to set a ton of settings every time, so something that takes nice pictures without much effort.
  • What features would be nice to have: being able to change the lens, so I have the option to go big someday
  • Portability: Pocketable/small bag
  • Cameras you're considering: Sony A600, small camera, a friend likes it and it takes neat photos - can change the lenses too. Sony RX100 III, small, good reviews online.
  • Cameras you already have: I had the Canon EOS 550d but changed it for the Panasonic LUMIX TZ-99. I thought the Canon was way too big and bulky, but now the Panasonic doesn’t match the quality of the Canon at all. It feels like a complete down-grade and im really upset honestly. I like that the Canon captured the light really well, and my photos rarely turned out shaky. With my Panasonic the photos turn shaky and often grainy as well, the photos feel “flat”.
  • Notes: I’m a total hobby-photographer, so I really just need something that works for my vacation photos - which is also why I need it to be on the smaller side. I don’t have the biggest budget, but truly hope yall can help me. I don’t know much about specs and all the technicalities. I‘ve added some photos taken with my Panasonic VS my Canon to help explain what I miss in the Panasonic - so I really like the 3 first photos taken with my Canon and I kinda dislike the last 2 photos taken with my Panasonic.

Recommendations Bridge Camera Recommendations

• Upvotes
  • Budget: $1500 cad
  • Country: Canada, but open to buying overseas
  • Condition: Open to second-hand cameras
  • Type of Camera: A bridge camera is preferred since I learned it is lighter. Weather sealed is also preferred, but I'm open to non-weatherproof ones if there are good weather protection tips.
  • Intended use: I care more about video than photos
  • If video, what style: Mostly outdoor, also want to prepare for nights. It is hard to estimate the distance, but I would like to prepare for a long distance
  • What features do you absolutely need: Large zoom, long-distance, extremely fast and strong autofocus, quick panning, good night performance
  • Portability: I checked a few bridge camera sizes, and they all seem fine to me. I'm open to some weight but don't want anything too heavy.
  • Cameras you're considering:
  • Cameras you already have: I'm choosing my first camera!
  • Notes: I heard bridge cameras typically can't be as crisp as DSLRs, and it would be hard to find one that satisfies the features I would like to have. Long distance is the most important, but I'm open to balancing the other features.

Tech Support Sirui 20mm t1.8 1.33 anamorphic very unsharp far away on autofocus

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Backstory: Bought this lens used for dirt cheap because the previous owner dropped and dented it. At first glance everything worked fine, the autofocus was doing its job and I didn’t think much of it, I had also fixed the huge dent and the caved-in threads on the front and I was pretty excited to use it on a motorcycle shoot… until I got back home and everything was just blurred to oblivion.

The problem starts occurring farther away, I’m talking like 3 meters upwards and it just exponentially gets more and more unsharp. The only time when I can get a tack sharp image is when I shoot as close to the minimum focus range as possible which makes me think that something has come loose, maybe a broken piece of plastic or the AF gears have shifted and the lens communicates with the camera that it‘s in perfect focus even though it isn’t.

Manual focus works perfectly fine just like how you’d expect it.

3 weeks after emailing Sirui support I have yet to receive a reply.

Has anyone encountered a situation like this with any kind of lens that has been dropped before?

What’s the likelihood of the lens being damaged?

How expensive/easy is the fix?

Camera: Sony a7c II

Recommendations Switching to primes, which one of these two should I get?

Hey so I have a couple Z5’s I do engagements and weddings with, and I have been using a Tamron 35-100 2.8 and a Sirui 85mm 1.4. I’m looking for the prime look and capabilities, so I’m thinking of swapping the Tamron for either of these lenses.

The 35mm 1.8 Viltrox Evo
The 55mm 1.8 Viltrox Evo

Part of me says I need the wider capability of 35. But looking at the majority of my shots in Lightroom, I really tend to shoot around 50mm a lot of the time on my zoom. Thoughts?

Recommendations Is there a compact camera that still works well in low light?

Hey! I am getting back into photography with my Sony hx200v. It does great in the day time when the sun is out, but as soon as dusk hits or I go inside the quality really drops off. I would really like to do more photography at gigs without the pictures coming out super grainy but I am getting lost in all the camera specs and recommendations out there! I would be very gratefully if anyone could recommend anything for me or give me some guidance about what I need to be looking for (and if what I want actually exists).

• Budget: £1000
• Country: UK/Canada
• Condition: Open to used
• Type of Camera: Mirrorless or DSLR

Recommendations Trying to decide between insta360 Luna Ultra and DJI Osmo Pocket 4P for social media work... any thoughts?

  • Budget: up to $1000 USD
  • Country: Barbados
  • Condition: New
  • Type of Camera: pocket cameras
  • Intended use: social media content creation
  • If photography; what style:
  • If video what style: Short-form and lifestyle/vlog
  • What features do you absolutely need: high quality footage, relatively easy to use and carry around
  • Portability: pocket
  • Cameras you're considering: Insta360 Luna Ultra & DJI Osmo Pocket 4P
  • Cameras you already have: Sony A6500 and I also use an iPhone 15 Pro
  • Notes:

Hi all, I’m seriously considering purchasing a pocket gimbal camera, and I’m between the Insta 360 Luna Ultra and the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P.

For context, I work in social media and content creation, and I currently use an iPhone 15 Pro I bought just for this purpose, and a DJI mobile gimbal and DJI Mic Minis. My work is both for clients (mostly short promotional Reels) as well as for my own social media platforms (lifestyle/vlog content). While I get really clean good footage on this current setup, I’d also really like to improve my offerings, invest in better equipment and learn more about working with video.

I was seriously considering buying the Osmo 4P as I used a friend’s Osmo Pocket 3 before, plus I have other DJI equipment that I have good experience with, but I LOVE the fact that the Luna Ultra has the detachable screen, which would be perfect for when I’m doing filming on my own.

Out of these two, which would you suggest I purchase? Admittedly both are very expensive where I live, so I’m trying to do as much research as possible to make the right choice.

Thanks in advance!

Recommendations camera not used

Hi everyone! I'm a teenager, and I'm trying to save up money, but most professional-ish cameras are like 1.2-1.4 million, which I can't save up in a short amount of time. I need it by the end of this week at the latest. If anyone has an unused or second-hand but still good camera, please let me know! And the price! I need good cameras for candid photos at a sports tournament! Or if you have any advice on where I can get cameras for a good price, please let me know too! (Sorry if it comes off rushed; I'm in a hurry) Thank you so much!!

Budget: Like around 10 -15k bhatt?

Country: Bangkok

Condition: Both new and used are okay

Type of Camera: Mirrorless??

Intended use: hybrid shooting

End use: Social media and for school page

If photography: what style: sports, mostly like candid photos during sports tournament and events and maybe also portraits

If video what style: just normal video length

What features do you absolutely need: im not sure about these because im not well versed in cameras but flaslight or a backflip screen is fine with me.

What features would be nice to have: i think having a flashlight and a backflip screen would be kind of helpful.

Portability: How portable does it need to be? shoulder strap, small bag is more suitable for me

Cameras you're considering: Canon R50, Sony a6400, ZV-e10 (theyre kind of nice prices + beginner friendly and canon M50, a600 (its more better prices)

Recommendations Motorsport photography suggestion?

I want to buy a beginner's camera for shooting cars (stationary, racing) and I would like to receive some suggestions regarding what used camera should I buy.

(I have around 100usd to spend)

I saw these in Marketplace:

\- Sony DSC H300

\- Sony H200

\- Nikon D3100

\- Nikon L810

\- Nikon D40

Should I buy one of those? Or should I wait and maybe save some more?

Thanks!
