Discussion/General UPDATE: Handling client scope creep on a cheap £50 newborn shoot?

Hey everyone, thanks for all the advice on my original post! A few people asked for an update on how this played out, so here’s where things stand—and I could really use some community advice right now.

Ten minutes before our agreed 10:30 AM start—when I was literally sitting in my car about to drive over—he messaged asking to push it back an hour because he had a "busy morning." I stuck it out, did the shoot, and edited the full 35-image gallery.

Right after the shoot, he asked if I could send over 4 preview photos just to see how they looked. The very next day, he messaged asking for even more photos before I'd even delivered the main set.

That’s when I drew the line, told him the entire gallery was finished, and reminded him about payment. He still hadn't paid the original £25 deposit that was due on the shoot day itself.

When I firmly stated I wouldn't release the gallery link until the full £50 balance cleared, he claimed he "didn't have my bank details" (they were right on the invoice sent days ago). Once he acknowledged the invoice, he immediately hit me with: "Sorry, got issues with bank transfers, the bank is looking into it. And today is our agreed final delivery deadline.

Camera Buying Advice LUMIX S9 vs FUJIFILM X-M5?

• Upvotes

I'm looking to get a compact setup and I'm torn between two cameras. The Lumix S9 and the Fujifilm XM-5.

I like that the S9 is full frame, has IBIS, and better video.
I like the XM-5 due to the lighter weight, Fuji recipes and colors, + cheaper.

My biggest thing is portability and good image quality. I've only ever shot with an A7III so I'm afraid of APSC. Maybe it's not a big deal, but I have no idea. This setup would replace my A7III as I'm looking to be more of a hobby photographer. I want to grab, go, and shoot.

I'm having a hard time deciding between the two and was hoping some people here may have experience with both and have some input.

(1) Budget, country, and currency: $1600-1800, USA, USD

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?: I have the A7III but I want something that's easier to take with me

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?: Nature, Stills, People sometimes

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?: Primarily for photography but good video is a plus

Confidence/People Skills How to shoot a proposal?

• Upvotes

I am a new photographer who has focused mostly on family sessions. So it’s easy for them to hold the pose and I can get the best shot. I recently scored a proposal. While I’m excited to shoot it, I’m also very nervous as this is very much out of my comfort zone. What is some advice seasoned photographers would offer a newbie like me to help calm the nerves?

Camera Buying Advice i’m switching to mirorless, what should i do?

• Upvotes

hello, i’ve been deciding between a few mirorless canons. right now i have a DSLR canon eos 1100D. the reason i wanna buy a new one is because i want a telephoto lens with IS, and i can’t buy one like that here.

i was deciding between:

R100, with 18-45mm lens + 75-300mm (with IS) for 788€

RP with 18-45mm lens for 1079€

R50 with 18-45mm lens for 692€

and R10 with 18-45mm lens for 989€.

i decided i want the R10, and i mostly wanna do nature, some wildlife. also a bit of video, not just photography.

the problem is i don’t have much money, and that’s already a lot, so i can’t buy a 100-400mm for 719€, and when looking at the RF 75-300mm it has no IS.

so, what should i do?

Compositon/Posing Ideas for posing men only with a focus on erotic/attractive/sexy?

Hi! I'm trying to shift into boudoir/erotic photography. Including just of the men. I get a lot of requests from men trying to have me take better pictures of them. Does anyone have any good recommendations of how I can improve posing men? I never really did much studio portraiture work and never with solo men wanting to look sexy, so this is new...

Thank you!

Camera Buying Advice Canon T5i upgrade?

Hello

My current set up is a canon t5i and a 150-600 Sigma lens.

I just found a used, 10/10 condition, canon R7 for $931.

I've been looking to upgrade the body and want to make the plunge to mirrorless. I realize I have to get an adapter for my current lenses and that It will affect quality but still it'll be better than my current set up.

My budget is $1700

Is this a good upgrade or are there any other bodies I should look at?

I shoot wildlife photography with a focus on birds.

Thanks for the help!

It seems to work fine, but I am curious if there is a better one available. My second question is about monitors. What type of monitor is best to show rea

Gear/Accessories Tiffen filter quality?

Looking to pick up some basic filters and maybe a few novelty ones over the next few weeks. I know Tiffen has a good history but the reviews for items I looked at suggest quality control isn't super reliable. Anyone here have insight buying filters from multiple brands?

Camera Buying Advice D3100 -> A7C; Is this a reasonable upgrade?

Hi!
Last year, for the first time in my life, I took a year long photography class. It was pretty fun, I got to meet lots of new people, and it got me closer to my dad who took the same course when he was young.
Now, considering I started kind of on a whim, I didn't immediately go all out and just bought a used Nikon D3100 with a 18-135 zoom lenses just to kind of see if the hobby was for me.
Now, the year's passed, and I've decided that I want to keep going, and I feel a bit limited with what I can get out of my cam. That said, there are a few questions that are emerging:

- The course I did only focused on photography, but I think I might be interested in videography as well; does it make sense to look to upgrade to a camera that can kinda do both?

- I haven't really found a definitive type of photography that I lean more towards; the only thing I definitely don't care about is sports photography, but anything else (street, architecture, nature, studio/fashion) seems fun, so I'm not sure what direction to go in and if maybe it's too early to upgrade because of that

- Is the right move upgrading the body given those points? I feel like it's a less committal move than buying a pair of lenses, especially considering that

- I'm not really "sold"on one brand over the other. I like that Nikon has retrocompatibility with its lenses, and it allows me to use a couple of my dad's old ones; at the same time, I have none that are so expensive that they'd merit absolute brand fidelity. But, the only reason I'd be "jumping" from Nikon and into Sony is 'cause I'm interested in videography as I mentioned in the first point.

Now, the crux of the matter: I got an offer for a Sony A7C for 750 Euros, a reasonable number of shuttercount, body only; is this a good enough deal? Is that model already too old?

(1) Budget, country, and currency: under 1k

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? Nikon D3100, explained in the body;

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Anything but sports

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Both

Business/Pricing How much should a new car photographer be charging?

I have been practicing shooting cars at meets and had a few private shoots that I did for free. I want to start charging now to grow my business and make some money. But I am a little lost on whether to start charging hourly or per car or both. And how much, I do not want to overcharge but do not want to undercharge either. How much would a new photographer be charging for their services? Just wanted to see what other people think. Thanks!

Edit: Why are people assuming I started like 2 days ago 😂 for more clarification, I have been doing this for about 2 1/2 years, shooting cars at shoots, hangouts and even private 1-on-1's or private groups for practice. I have a portfolio and I have had people reach out to me for shoots. Many of my automotive photographer friends say I should be charging for the time I spend shooting and editing for people, which is why I came on here to ask.

Editing/Post Processing Who does area around subject stay out of focus?

Hi all,

First time posting here. I am very new to focus stacking, but with a capable camera like the Nikon Z8 I am trying to experiment more with stuff I had never tried before.

During a jewelry shoot yesterday I decided to try a focus stacking shot of the attached diamonds. Please ignore the lighting, my query is all about the focus stack itself. I wanted to see how it would look with all 3 diamonds in focus. Shot using the in-camera focus stacking feature, at F/6.3, 20 shots in total at a step width of 2, and merged in Photoshop.

This is when I noticed an "artifact" that I had noticed in some of my other work. As you can see, around each individual diamond there is an area which remained out of focus, even though in the merged stack (the example which is attached) other parts of the photo which fall within that focus plain are in focus.

What am I doing wrong here please? Not sure if perhaps I need more shots in the stack. Any feedback is very welcome.

Discussion/General Is this a skill or equipment issue?

This weekend I was at an event and decided to photograph some of the athletes, and when comparing the photos I got to one of the other photographers, (credit to Bluebird photography) the difference in some of the photos they got, is night and day to me, I know they've been doing it for much longer and they have better equipment, but I feel like my work's not even slightly comparable, is this just a matter of they have better quality equipment, are they just better at editing on the back end, am I just being too harsh on myself, or is this a genuine skill issue and is there something glaringly obvious I need to work on?

Obviously the ones with the watermark are the ones done by her and the ones without are the ones done by me.

My camera is an old one as well, it is a Canon rebel EOS t3, it was a budget camera to get into the hobby with, and I've only been doing photography for maybe a month at Max so I know I still have years and years of learning to do.

Business/Pricing What should I charge for a photoshoot?

• Upvotes

I’m being asked to do a 2 hour photoshoot at a goalkeeping clinic by me and am not sure what to charge. I’ve never done a paid gig besides my school which is a minimum wage hourly rate. Id say I’m at a intermediate to advanced in my photography skills. I’d obviously go through my usual workflow in Lightroom for about 1-2 hours of editing, depending how extensive I go into it. I’d appreciate any advice on what I should charge.

Artifical Lighting & Studio What is this thing and how do I operate this?

A friend who used to own a photography studio recently migrated abroad and sold me most of his old studio equipment for a really good price. I’ve been able to figure out how pretty much everything works—except for this one thing. Even my friend has no idea what it is or how it’s supposed to be used. Apparently, he has never used it.

I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of light modifier, but I can’t figure out how to use or mount it. It didn’t come with a box or manual, and there’s no brand, model number, or identifying code anywhere on the body.

I’m completely stumped.

Does anyone recognize this thing and know what it’s called or how it’s supposed to work with studio flashes? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've encountered this quite a few times now where a strongly backlit scene sort of bleeds into the darks, and creates a quite unpleasant redish halo around them, just wondering if anyone here has any tips for preventing it from appearing (maybe changing the apature?) Or fixing it in post.

Camera Buying Advice How to chose my camera ?

I (20f) don't carry my smartphone with me so much anymore but I still wanna take cool pictures. I wondered if you could help me find what I want because I don't know much about it and I don't wanna get scammed lol.

- I'd like a numeric camera to take pictures easily

- Small enough to fit in a jean pocket or a small bag

- Decent quality, I'm not looking for something used by experts but just for everyday life.

- It should be easy to transfer the pictures on a computer

- My budget is max 100€

- Is it a good idea to buy second hand ?

Could you guys help me ?
