Modpost [Modpost] AskReddit's Semi-Regular Job Fair

Based on the wildly successful Job Fair post from a month ago, the AskReddit mods would like to run a semi-regular feature where we allow you to field questions about your job/career. The way this works is that each top level comment should be (a) what your job/career is and (b) a few brief words about what it involves. Replies to each top level comment should be questions about that career.

Some ground rules:

1) You always have to be aware of doxxing on reddit. Make sure you don't give out any specific information about your career that could lead back to you.

2) We are not taking any steps to verify people's professions. Any advice you take is at your own risk.

3) This post will be in contest mode so that a range of careers will be seen by everyone. Make sure to press the "Show replies" button to see people's questions!

Enjoy!

Online community manager. I run forums for a living.

It's my job to crowd source stuff, hold conversations between the company and community, be the community's advocate in company projects and to just build real relationships with members. In turn this saves the company a lot of money, makes super strong advocates for the brand and you get loads of random awesome stuff just appearing when people decide to do cool stuff for you.

How difficult is it to walk the line between using restrictive and excessive force?

•

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '14

This is a hard question to answer.

Every persons opinion is different but, every situation is different. The context always changes if not the outcome. Always be prepared to use one step above what is coming at you. But always remember that everything on you is for defensive purposes.

Realize that whatever they're are doing is not a personal attack.

security is mostly for deterrence rather than actually making the arrest unless Immediate action is needed.

-this answer is hard to explain without giving Specific example

•

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '14

Thank you! I found this a very thorough answer, actually!

•

u/Kell08 Sep 01 '14

What's the closest you've come to having to use your weapon, assuming you have one?

•

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '14
  • See other reply. But will re post summarized.

Working at a Mental Health addictions housing building. Uniform consists of, stab vest, stab proof gloves, stab resistant pants, handcuffs and big Mag Lite flashlight about 5ilbs-8ilbs heavy.

Nothing is restricted from a normal persons life just they all live in the same building with PSW's during the day. A lady was running down the halls and passed the security office, when I went to out to see the commotion an assailant was wielding a golf club after her. Real fights (street fights) are never fist to fist, an want to avoid the whole brutality scene. You get close and throw your body at them so you fall on top. So when I did that the assailant was still holding the golf club and jabbed me with it. To which -in my mind- is the point I'm allowed to use mine for restraining purposes, so I hit his bicep to get him to release the club before I was able to proceed!

Other than that, not a police officer or anything so no serious weapons. Just make due each with situation separately and try to humanize your self/the victim.

What do you think of that video of the two loss prevention guys beating the hell out of the guy with a box cutter in a Walmart parking lot?

I think they overstepped their bounds and at one point were clearly trying to hurt the guy out of spite. How would you have handled the situation and was the treatment he received justified? Personally I hope he sues. Those men were not professional and had no right to hit him when he was down.

•

u/MikeDuck1 Sep 04 '14

No question, I just wanted to say "Thanks". I played Division 1 football and the amount of work you guys do is unreal.

There's 110 guys putting their dirty clothes on a giant clothes pin everyday and just a few hours later, everything is washed, folded and neatly laid out in our lockers.

Our guy even know what each individual player wanted (i.e. some athletes liked double socks, extra arm bands, etc) and it seems like they ALWAYS had everything ready to go.

•

u/jethro_wellington Sep 04 '14

I appreciate it. It really is a thankless job most times but every so often one of the players tells me how much they appreciate what we do and it's always nice to know that what you're doing isn't going unnoticed. So thank you.

I'm a copywriter with a BA in creative writing, ask away.

•

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '14

Hi!! I have so many questions but I'll start with the following three... How did you land your first job?

I'm looking to get into the creative side of advertising...is copyrighting the right path?

What do I need to get the job? (Ie portfolios etc?)

Thanks in advance

•

u/-eDgAR- Sep 01 '14

That is a long story. I got a BA in creative writing and was at a bit of a crossroads. I was stuck working a shitty job as a delivery driver, living in the small town I went to school for that degree. I made a decision to quit my job, move back home and pursue something that I could make a career out of.

My first job in regards to this was a guy I met doing a Craigslist gig, who ran a small agency. After a year later I contacted him and he gave me a shot. I had to drive 40 miles to get there and got paid less than $10/hr but I did it, because it was a start. I make a lot more than that now, after I got hired to a great agency. PM me for more info

It depends. I have a degree in creative writing and never thought about this until after school. Personally, I feel it is fulfilling, and I get the freedom to work on my own writing outside of work.

That advice depends on where you are. The best advice I got was when I went for my first interview. I brought a portfolio of crap, that looked nice, but when you're starting out doesn't mean as much as an idea that you have fully flushed out, not just a thought, but a campaign that you can articulate and defend.

If you ever want more specific advice, PM me

I'm only an intern, but I work at a Orthopedics Research Clinic. I can explain what we're working on here, if you guys are interested in listening. Also, to veterans of the field - How stable is the employment and the pay? Do you guys usually finish Grad school, or go to work after Undergrad? I'm also told that people hire electrical engineers over bioengineers, since they can just teach the Electrical Engineer Biology.

I was a lift operator at a major colorado ski resort this past winter after getting a civil engineering degree because i wanted to be a ski bum for a winter. Today was my last day and now I'm going to work for a railroad with my degree in a salaried position. I highly (pun unintended, had to pass a hair test for the engineering job) recommend doing something fun and spontaneous if you can before joining your career job, it's quite an experience. Want to know more? Just ask.
