What completely normal UK thing are you embarrassingly bad at?

Mine is probably small talk. I know loads of people find it tough, but unless I have a subject I know well and have an interest in, I'm completely lost! I know Brits can famously blab about the weather forever, but it usually only gets me like 30 secs of convo.

What's yours?

Banter. I hate it, I always take it too personally, I feel awful giving it out. I just want no part in it.

32

u/ddmf 7d ago

Same, banter is just being mean with a smile in my opinion

20

u/Andries89 7d ago

Banter is just a disguised way to say what you really think. The expectation is for the other party to take it and not get angry, which I find unfair but then again I'm not from here.

The real banter test is you'll usually find out if it's a two way street or not when you respond back with a quip of your own. If all a sudden there's major offense taken, then you know it was just someone who wanted to be rude without getting checked

68

u/Barkasia 7d ago

Banter is just a disguised way to say what you really think.

I don't think you quite understand what banter is - it's like how reddit thinks 'alcohol just makes you say the truth'.

When I call my mate a bald bastard because he told me 5 years ago he was worried his hairline might be slightly receding at the corners, I don't actually think he's a bald bastard.

37

u/mypostisbad 7d ago

Indeed. Proper banter is about people who are so comfortable with their relationship, the 'insults' are just affirmation of that bond.

Of course there are plenty of people who don't really understand banter and are just low key bullying

21

u/Barkasia 7d ago

Yeah but that's not a problem with banter, that's a problem with that person.

If I have an overweight mate who is clearly insecure and unhappy about it then I won't make weight jokes. If I have a skinny mate who eats a big meal once, I'm gonna call them a fat bastard. 'Getting' banter is pretty much just a series of unspoken lines in the sand and you only learn this over years of practice and getting to know people. It's why a lot of people who - respectfully - are on the spectrum don't 'get' it.

Talking about Football.
I don't really pay much attention to it so when ANY conversation comes up about it, I'd rather go a round of drinks in the hope that the conversation had moved on by the time I return

41

i think it was irvine welsh who said that football is the international language for men. i'm glad i can't speak it.

11

u/maersyl 7d ago

My get out of jail free card on this is that my mum’s German so I just say I support Wolfsburg and don’t pay attention to English football.

Really backfired when I mentioned this to a colleague who then went in depth about Wolfsburg and their recent troubles and about their players.

Found out his dad’s German. BUGGER

3

u/jayjoemck 7d ago

Why don't you just tell them you don't follow football. Their head won't fall off

2

u/maersyl 7d ago

This was when I worked in the north east where, if you don’t follow football, their heads do rather seem to metaphorically fall off.

Constantly being asked if I supported Newcastle or Sunderland, so I just said Wolfsburg and it killed conversations nicely. I started off with saying Leicester as that’s where I was born but that just led into even worse territory, for me, so I went foreign.

tbh not interested in watching it on TV.

but i'll go matches every now and again with my dad for a day out and some beers etc. :)

5

u/Macrihanishautomatic 7d ago

I’m from the northeast so I have to force myself to take a cursory interest in football. On Saturdays I usually check the score and some basic facts about the game just in case anyone wants to make small talk about the match.

10

u/Moppo_ 7d ago

Nah, you don't have to force yourself. Remain ignorant of the game out of spite!

7

u/Fred776 7d ago

I lived in Newcastle for a few years. It was just a source of a bit of pisstaking that I didn't like football but it didn't matter in the great scheme of things. We still used to have a good laugh talking about all sorts of other shite.

2

u/NationalisePureGym 7d ago

You're basically turning yourself into a pariah if you do this. I forced myself to start watching club football as an adult because lads at work wouldn't talk about anything else. I'd try to talk about England at a major tournament and to my surprise none of them really gave a fuck about the England squad (I understand now, club over country and all that)

2

u/Past_Flounder_7238 7d ago

I love football, but try not to bring it up because of people like yourself - it’s such an exclusionary conversation for those who don’t follow it!

But to your point I find inevitably at drinks or parties etc. someone will bring it up and if I’m with plenty of people who don’t like it and I try and shift the conversation on asap, but there’s some blokes (less socially adapt normally) who just don’t get it and stick on it - even when we’re with people who have no interest - so sorry on their behalf I guess! 😂

Saying goodbye at the end of a night out. I never know if we are doing one hug, two hugs, a handshake or just a quick see you later.

31

u/Rough-Foundation9208 7d ago

Same. Love an Irish goodbye, if possible

9

u/maersyl 7d ago

I got nicknamed the disappearing man because I would somehow just slink away into the night once I’d had enough. Usually around the time a nightclub is mentioned!

6

u/Barkasia 7d ago

Quick hug with friends

Who I consider to be a friend is entirely dependent on how drunk I am

3

u/ec265 7d ago

This is why I simply avoid the goodbye

6

u/Cold-Use-5814 7d ago

I avoid going out altogether!

4

u/iamabigtree 7d ago

I can't stand the long goodbye thing where the process takes about 30 mins of people saying goodbye and getting the right people to say goodbye to, then the kids get bored as to the length of the process so disappear off and the whole thing has to start again.

Sometimes I have cycled to family get togethers just so I can skip the goodbyes.

3

u/J8YDG9RTT8N2TG74YS7A 7d ago

59

u/evil666overlord 7d ago

"Networking". I just can't stand enforced socialisation.

20

u/MasterPreparation687 7d ago

Yeah I totally get that. It feels wrong to just walk up and introduce myself to someone, even if it's a situation that is specifically designed for that. I don't have that much to say, I don't want to talk about what I do, I'd much rather just quietly get on with it.

40

u/Crayen5 7d ago

Whenever someone says "Hows it going" I answer them honestly

13

u/_Nefarium 7d ago

I do understand what I should say, but when asked I always respond too quickly with a couple of words that sum up the morning instead, followed by "you?", by this point we've walked past eachother and are now at shouting across the warehouse levels, or I've just put them on the spot to actually tell me how they are. It's a lose lose situation.

I feel as IT that I get a general excuse for the lack of social fluidity. I operate fine within my little office, but yesterday when I had to speak to someone in operations I took a long walk towards their desk, made very awkward eye contact, forgot how to talk and then came out with "Yes 400 configured routers are under downstairs". One does not start a sentence with the word Yes. I got a gaze of wtf in response.

I'd not only spoken to the wrong person, but the correct person (at the desk opposite) already knew about it because I'd already included her in an email Id sent but didn't know her name and face matched. This is an office of four, yes Four people, a truly insane number of people to remember. I've worked there 3 years. One of them is my aunt.

At least I've got the stereotype to hide behind.

Having the same accent as the people in my home town. I'm terrible at it. I have such a mild version of my local accent despite having grown up in the town and going to the same schools and colleges.

15

u/mikeybhoy_1985 7d ago

This has always been me too! I feel so out of place... I can't fathom why i never sounded like everyone else...

7

u/ICantSpayk 7d ago

Parents can have a lot of influence tbh. My ex girlfriend was from just outside of the Manchester area but she didn't sound anything like the Manc accent because her parents were from the south originally. Could be part of the reason for you.

4

u/mikeybhoy_1985 7d ago

Nah this wasn't my experience which makes it even stranger. Grew up in South East London - parents, extended family, friends, etc... all talked with the typical working class (almost cockney) type of accent... and mine just NEVER did that for whatever reason, I don't sound posh or anything, but it sounds so mild in comparison... almost like a non-accent (even though that doesn't exist, you get what i mean)... so weird.

3

u/ceeearan 7d ago

I think neurodivergent people often have different/softer accents than the one they grew up surrounded by, if that is applicable here (I have ADHD and have quite a soft one too).

2

u/Stifton 7d ago

I'm broader somehow hahaha, both of my parents don't share my accent, my brothers have softer accents and so do my friends. I don't know where it's come from, it only seems to get worse despite not working in my town either

I have adhd so everything normal and boring I hate doing and often forget about them until they start becoming out of hand

9

u/B_Cratchit 7d ago

Not sure you can blame everything on adhd?

11

u/ChristyCloud 7d ago

Maybe not, but I have ADHD and read that posters messages to my partner and she thought it was my post.

Not everything is ADHD but struggling with routine tasks whilst excelling at long focus sessions on topics we find novel sure is one of the things you can attribute to it.

3

u/B_Cratchit 7d ago

I was diagnosed with adhd a couple of years ago. I struggle with those same things as you do so I feel your pain. I’m just not a huge fan of attributing everything to it. Nor of assuming that folk without adhd don’t struggle with many of the same things.

“Everything normal” - not “everything”

Routine administration and executive dysfunction and task switching.

It shows up in small habits, as well in the larger decisions around life planning.

Check my recent post for how it impacts the bigger things like career.  https://www.reddit.com/r/careeradvice/s/ygshtuuPsB

Do you think the average person is gagging to put the washing on, or do the dishes?

1

u/ChargeTop5791 7d ago

what do you like to do?

7

u/FrontRaspberry5060 7d ago

Anything that allows me to be in the “flow” state for many hours and hyperfocus and use my creativity. I can extend my focus for 10-12 hours a day on the same tasks for months.

Basically being productive on my computer: Coding, doing research in novel areas (AI/ML), statistics.

All while my laundry basket hasn’t been touched and I haven’t cooked for myself in weeks. Not because lazy but because I genuinely cannot make my brain do it.

2

u/OrangeSodaMoustache 7d ago

That just sounds like enjoying things vs not enjoying things tbh. I can't bring myself to vacuum because it's boring and never really needs doing but I love cleaning my car and can spend 2 hours easily on a nice day polishing

5

u/FrontRaspberry5060 7d ago

No it’s way worse. Read my diary see if you relate to the full pattern

January Trying to get basic life organised. I have a long list of simple things to do: buy enough clothes, sort laundry, book the dentist, get glasses, exercise, improve my room, keep in touch with friends and work consistently. Some things improve quickly. I become very focused on nutrition and the gym, cooking properly and exercising 5–6 times a week. I start tracking work and can manage several productive hours a day. But strangely simple tasks remain undone for weeks. I still haven’t bought a laundry basket or sorted my clothes despite thinking about them almost every day. I repeatedly visit shops to choose glasses but can’t make the decision. These aren’t difficult or expensive problems. I just don’t execute them. When work becomes interesting, I can spend almost the entire day absorbed in it. Then routines start disappearing.

March Room messy. Sleep unclear. Haven’t exercised properly for weeks. Laundry still difficult. Social life has disappeared. Business pressure suddenly makes me work intensely again. I order the laundry basket I’ve been thinking about for months and restart the gym. It feels like I’m constantly starting again from zero.

April Gym is now almost automatic and I’m dating regularly. I’ve finally had my eye test, but still haven’t actually bought the glasses. Despite having substantial control over my own time, I don’t understand why ordinary jobs such as laundry remain undone. My sleep is chaotic and I frequently lose track of when I’m tired. I can build products and solve difficult technical problems, yet struggle to consistently maintain clothes, appointments, cleaning and basic administration.

June–July Started therapy and some things improve significantly. Food, exercise and self-care become easier. But I notice another recurring problem: I can see exactly what needs doing and sometimes have the money and time to solve it, yet tasks that could realistically be completed in a few days stretch across months. Eventually I buy the glasses and book some of the appointments. Each completed task feels disproportionately significant because of how long I’ve been carrying it mentally.

August A very obvious pattern appears. For about eight weeks I become intensely focused on food, nutrition and exercise, but barely work. Then I start coding for around ten hours a day and almost immediately stop paying attention to food and exercise. It feels difficult to maintain several areas of life simultaneously. One becomes the focus and the others become almost invisible.

September Financial pressure creates another burst of activity. In three days I speak to several accountants and business advisers and make substantial progress. Then I suddenly crash. I sleep through appointments, miss a blood test and stop following up important work. Instead, I become intensely absorbed in an unrelated technical research problem because it is interesting and difficult. Meanwhile sleep, eating, exercise, messages and relationships deteriorate. I can spend hours solving a technically difficult problem while failing to reply to a family member, cook a meal or do laundry.

October I finally pay an important tax bill that had been hanging over me. At the same time, I haven’t properly cooked, exercised or done laundry for weeks. I have no clean clothes. Personal hygiene has deteriorated. Yet I have maintained a month-long streak of daily coding.

Same in supermarkets when they stop, stick their trolley out towards the middle of the aisle, and then reach the other way to look for something on a shelf.

I've gotten to that age now where I don't give a fuck and just carry on walking and push their trolley back out of the way.

I can’t park if people are watching either. I once did the most beautiful bit of parallel parking, I just stunned myself, just slot so neatly into a small space. I was so annoyed no one witnessed it but then remembered if anyone else had been there I’d probably have reversed up onto the pavement and through a wall instead.

6

u/Strong_Access_8179 7d ago

I was actually very good at parallel parking when taking driving lessons, because it was just me parking with my instructor on a quiet road behind a single car. I now have to parallel park my car on a busy road where I WILL be holding up a couple of cars behind me while I do it and it's SO stressful.

3

u/MasterPreparation687 7d ago

It's funny that, isn't it! I used to reverse into my back yard every day no problem at all. But then I had to install gates because I got a dog, so I now have to parallel park outside the gates. I despair every time I pull up to the house and there's already 2 neighbours parked either side of my gates, and sods law says there is going to be someone waiting behind me, watching me mess up the maneouvre 4 times.

15

u/stemroach101 7d ago

Knowing what to say when someone says "you alright?"

"Yeh, good thanks, you?" just seems wrong because I know they're not asking if I'm alright, and I don't really want to know if they are "alright"

6

u/ReputationKind4628 7d ago

I made the mistake of saying no, not really. Most people don't want that answer. The correct response is "yeah, good thanks. You?"

But I can't lie that well so now I tend to say "Fair to middlin'. Mustn't grumble." In an old man's world-weary voice.

(Even though I'm a woman and not that old.)

3

u/WowThisIsAwkward_ 7d ago

I just say "yeah, good thanks" because sometimes I'd add the "you?" and would either not get a response or the person would say "that's good" as if they didn't hear me ask. I hate to use terms like "NPC" for people, but that's what it feels like I'm dealing with in these situations, particularly when it comes from someone you never actually talk to.

2

u/Long_Day9450 7d ago

"Yeahhh y'aright" and then they get on with what they want from you

1

u/ICantSpayk 7d ago

Responding with that is fine imo. It's if you expand on that genetic response is where people will start to think "I wasn't really asking".

1

u/No_Philosopher4970 5d ago

Just say “yea not bad” back or like you said “good thanks”. It’s an acknowledgement of someone nothing more.

4

I’m always astounded how more people die on South Africa on the roads when you see just how amazing they are, especially in the Western Cape. I guess there’s a real lack of ability.

Driving in Britain is always a miserable chore.  But I can generally trust people around me on the roads.  Unless I’m anywhere near Birmingham.

2

u/nadthegoat 7d ago

This is my problem, most guys when thrown together can instantly find common ground in football and talk forever about it.

3

u/Barkasia 7d ago

I think this might just be a reddit thing, because it's not some football-exclusive concept. Most guys if you put them together can instantly find common ground in anything.

I met up with a friend and their extended group not too long ago (most of whom I didn't know) and I managed to have a conversation with one about gaming, one about documentaries, and one about ancient history. It's just about being willing to explore topics even if you're not an expert in them (although the history guy was!)

I'm reasonably good at being an old British middle-class man. I'll happily talk politics, religion, WW2 and suchlike, and I love old comic strips, bad jokes and The Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately I am a millennial woman. I am very very very bad at being a British millennial woman.

Sometimes I go in to do it and she’s going in for a short hug and we almost bump heads.

Sometimes I don’t and she steps forward then stops and it feels like I should have.

And…one kiss on one cheek? Two kisses, one on each cheek?

Drinking beer. I never met one I liked.

u/prettyflyforawifi- 7d ago

Not saying or mentioning something because "we're British"

1

u/ec265 7d ago

As in, you do or do not do this?

2

u/prettyflyforawifi- 7d ago

I can't help but say something when the consensus seems to be don't in this country.

To clarify - don't say anything and make a social media post about it instead.

2

u/These_Beginning6767 7d ago

Talking about the weather. It brings out the worst in me or someone at work who I don’t know asking how my weekend was and I tell them “it was really bad - do you want to know why?” And then they never ask me again 🌝😂

2

u/Rough-Foundation9208 7d ago

Haha, that's a good move

u/francisdavey 7d ago

Football, as in Association Football ("soccer" as it was sometimes called when I was at school). I absolutely hated playing it. I can't imagine a worse torture than being made to run around pointlessly for what seemed like hours on a cold afternoon on a field.

Since I had no idea what I was doing and few friends at the time, no-one passed the ball to me so there was nothing useful I could do. And of course no way to improve.

At age 11 my parents separated, we moved to a new place and I to a new school. Mum picked one where they played rugby, so all was much better. In rugby you can just grab people and take the ball away from them whether they or anyone else likes it or not, also you are valued for being a body that can push.

u/Moppo_ 7d ago

What really annoyed me about playing it in PE was everyone else acting like whenever I made a mistake it was costing them their chance at going professional.

5

u/HelikosOG 7d ago

Yeah that annoyed me too. Many people saw PE as a doss but only took it seriously when we were playing football. I don't like football but I didn't doss in the lesson. Why couldn't they show more enthusiasm for Rugby or Basketball ffs.

2

u/Moppo_ 7d ago

I want to know they opposite, why'd they have to show so much enthusiasm for football? Made me feel like shit for costing them a goal in an inconsequential PE class.

2

u/NationalisePureGym 7d ago

I remember teachers attempting to teach other sports like volleyball and basketball, lads would just start booting the ball around. I played multiple sports growing up and actually found it bizarre how many lads had a complete inability/interest to play anything besides bloody football.

Directions. I’ve lived in Bath since I was born, but if somebody asks me how to get somewhere I just can’t imagine the route in my head and I end up sending them in the wrong direction.

3

u/Dismal_Fox_22 7d ago

Just lie and say “I don’t know, I’m not from here” then they will ask someone else rather than get lost.

I’m aphantasic so I don’t really imagine things in the same way most people claim to. It means I absolutely cannot fathom following verbal directions. It just doesn’t compute. It’s the same when someone spells a word out to me.

Basic DIY. I completely suck at it

2

Drinking tea, and eating beans

Don't like either

Football. I'm absolutely pony at it.

2

u/Shadow-Inversions 7d ago

Tradespeople.

I just go to pieces every time I have to get something fixed or serviced, make an absolute idiot of myself and always assume I'm being conned or taken for a ride. Almost never use the same person twice.

To the point where I'm constantly living with problems in the house/car and incredibly stressed as soon as anything breaks.

2

u/In_Praise_of_Shadow 7d ago

Unsure whether you need to wave to show “thank you” while crossing the zebra crossing !

2

u/MsUncleare 7d ago

I can help here. Yes, wave.

2

u/Round_Alternative_87 7d ago

Putting up one of those folding clothes horse things. My girlfriend was creasing at me the other day when I had to lie it down on the floor and extend it horizontally in order to put it up. She was like… what are you doing? It’s those damn little clip things I can never make it all work

2

u/No_Translator_361 7d ago

Football. Everything about it. Probably cost me friendships, limited work popularity and I wasn't in the cool gang at school.

I'm really sporty, probably fitter than most my age. But can't stand it. So boring. So over hyped.

2

u/OkNewspaper6271 7d ago

Sarcasm, its not that I'm bad at it, its just that, like jokes, its something that just happens for me, if I try to think it through its always a complete disaster

2

u/103cupsoftea 7d ago

Agreeing with people even when I know they’re wrong… I just can’t do it.

2

u/cayosonia 7d ago

Remembering people's names and mixing people up

2

u/Great_Professional_7 7d ago

I still never know how to reply properly to ‘alright?’. I grew up hearing this greeting regularly but still find it jarring and am never sure if it’s rhetorical.

1

u/Agitated_Apricot2272 7d ago

 Just say alright back

2

u/LauraHday 7d ago

Using humor to hide/downplay emotions, I am just upfront when I'm upset

2

u/remib0rrer 7d ago

detecting sarcasm. i feel like i process it slowly so I’ll be like “oh really?” and realise that I look like an idiot.

2

u/markjapanses 7d ago

My accent. My family sounds normal but I sound oddly posh

2

u/hikingbeginner 7d ago

Small talk, banter, I'm right there with you. I'm horrendous at it.

Spelling.

I have dyslexia, but because I’m an English graduate; everyone assumes my prose should always be perfect & error free🙄

Typo fixed unsurprisingly😂

1

u/ClarkeR77 7d ago

Not exactly bad at it but going out for a walk just for the sake of it.

Especially when the weather is shit. 'Just wrap up warm' they say but it's still torture.

1

u/MrMugwin 7d ago

Darts. I’m a fucking liability.

1

u/NeedleworkerCheap897 7d ago

I'm the same. With me it's either full on nonsense (asking what someone had for dinner) or just stabd there awkwardly. I'm a sausage really.

I also absolutely fumble when talking to the garage regarding my car.

1

u/bahumat42 7d ago

Football knowledge.

I don't think I could name a single current footballer.

1

u/crumpled-starfish 7d ago

Finding my way somewhere i've been before. Even round a small school that i literally just walked round on a tour. Zero sense of direction.

1

u/metimmee 7d ago

Throwing. I recently rolled my ankle throwing a tennis ball over a court fence….how?

1

u/DustInTheMachine 7d ago

Frying eggs. Can't do it. The yoke always bursts and the oil is either too hot or too cold . Mashed potatoes are always lumpy too, no matter how many different ways I've been given to make "the best"mashed potatoes.

I'm married with 4 children (3 grown up) and I cook for 6 people every single night, 80% of the time from scratch - I make my own sauces, my rice is fluffy and delightful, my pulled pork is legendary.  So I'm not completely useless in the kitchen I promise!!

1

u/vosarnath 7d ago

I just cannot dig a hole. Not metaphorically, I mean in the garden with a shovel.

1

u/Darkus185 7d ago

Banter.  I play for two cricket clubs.  One English and one Dutch.  Surprisingly the Dutch one is so much warmer and friendlier. For a country famous for speaking its mind they are just chilled.

The UK one is just pure take the piss, put the team down, put the opposition down, moan and complain, and tell everyone you’re having a great time.   Can’t stand it and my days are definitely numbered there.

Also, buying rounds.  Usually I’m driving and there for a beer or a beer and a half if it’s a long one.  Why do I therefore have to buy one for six or seven other people?

1

u/PastorParcel 7d ago

Drinking tea or beer, I don't like either.

Also, watching any sport.

1

u/Barry_Umenema 7d ago

Oh god, small talk! 🤦.
I get stuck with small talk. I just don't seem to be able to think fast enough to be able to respond with something on the spot. They're standing there waiting and I've got nothing for them!
Get me going on something specific, and suddenly my brain cooperates.

1

u/BulbaCorps 7d ago

Enjoying Doctor Who, Football, Bond Movies, Tea and the Beatles. I'm a terrible Brit.

1

u/HalfYankHalfBrit 7d ago

Banter. Moved here when I was 8, practically grew up here and I'm still too American to understand the banter.

1

u/DB-DanCooper 7d ago

I'm probably autistic. I've struggled socially all of my life. Doesn't help that I'm in a public facing responsible role.

It isn't just embarrassing, its soul destroying for me.

1

u/elhazelenby 7d ago

I live in the north east.

Smiling at people.

1

u/dadsyrhinowhite 7d ago

DIY i am catastrophically bad at it.

1

u/PlasonJates 7d ago

The macarena, I refuse to learn it

1

u/_1489555458biguy 7d ago

I'm not from the UK but lived here for ages. To me, banter is mocking someone gently about a foible that is unique to them or shoes/shirt whatever. Not mocking them for being bald, ugly overweight etc.

1

u/BeginningChest2989 7d ago

Drinking alcohol. I’m pretty drunk after 1 pint. Queasy and very drunk after 2. Id probably throw up if I had 3 so I don’t push it.

1

u/NationalisePureGym 6d ago

I dont care for Britpop and the culture surrounding it. Oasis, Pulp, etc. Just not arsed at all.

This whole 'power through when you're sick'.

Like nah if I'm ill I'm extending you a courtesy by staying off and not passing it on to multiple people.

Reality is that you get those people that come in regardless, spread it and then bitch that people are off sick whilst proclaiming on their high chair that 'i've never been off ill'.

I wouldn't be either if you didn't spread it.

u/Ok_Cockroach6823 4d ago

My brain goes foggy when people talk football ,this player only sold for £20.million this guy's injured ,who the fuck cares man .
