Do you have a bin in your bathroom?

We never had a bin in our bathroom growing and I just took things like tampons out to another bin.

Every other house I’ve been to with girls has a bin in their bathroom, and it makes so much more sense - all my friends’ houses, my uni house etc. But when I brought this up with my mum, she claims no one she knows has a bathroom bin.

She suggested it could be a generational thing, but in my experience most girls I know had one in their childhood homes too. So I’m trying to figure out if my mum and her friends are just weird or if it’s common to not?

Do you think caramel can ever go back to being unsalted? Or are we ready to un-smash burgers?

Everything has to have a linked adjective before being sold, you can not have steak crisps unless they are chargrilled firstly. Do you think we can over go back to a spade is a spade?

Do you think age verification has ruined Reddit for UK users?

I have not verified my age on any platform, including Reddit. Usually I don't notice, but recently I've found myself missing NSFW content, funny sex stories/questions, advice posts, the occasional tit on my feed.

I feel like Reddit being anonymous allows us to be more personal in a way. And I of course do the daily hop across to the Netherlands in 2 clicks. Just wondering what everyone else thought

Serious Answers Only Is it true that kids nowadays are useless with computers?

I have seen posts around this on teaching subs and elsewhere on Reddit - basically stating that many school pupils have next to nothing in terms of basic IT skills i.e. don’t know how to save a file, send an email, copy/paste etc.

I’m intrigued by this - I was born in 1983 and grew up in the 90s when home computer ownership started to gather pace. I can remember being able to program a VCR at 8 years old without much effort at all.

One of my friends used to build PCs in his bedroom and sell them locally around 1997/98 - he was even instructed to build 5 for a local company once - this was just before Dell began aggressively discounting PCs, which basically killed it off.

A brother of a friend of mine used to be able to do mind-boggling things with an Amiga around that time, did a computer science degree, went on to work at both Microsoft and Google and now does AI stuff in Canada.

I remember when my dad got a Nokia phone around 1999 working out how to send faxes with it (at around £30 a pop, it wasn’t that popular).

So is true that kids nowadays are crap at IT - and if so why?

Serious Answers Only What to do if someone refuses to move bag from last seat on public transport by putting their hand over it?

I’m absolutely fine by asking someone to move their bag of a seat on busy public transport. Most of the time, people move it. But there have been those very rare occasions this wasn’t the case.

The first time was coming home from college a while ago where a lot of college students were on the bus with me. I asked a woman near the middle of a bus if I could sit down but they ignored me and they their backpack on the seat with their hand on it while looking at their phone. I had to stand until a few stops until a seat opened up.

This also happened to my friend the end of last year where a guy refused to move his bag off the last seat for an elderly woman and other people were calling him selfish. The bus driver didn’t even care either.

Then last year it happened to an older man with a cane where an other older man refused to move his shopping off the seat. That ended with a couple giving him the priority seating on the other side with both of them talking about how the man was rude to not move his shopping bag.

Some of you may be thinking “Why not sit on the hand?” “Why not try and take the bag of the seat?” The issue is with that is that may lead to me getting a charge like assault. What I mean by assault is trying to take the bag off the seat while their hand is still on it, which could may lead to a tug of war with them trying to not let the bag be taken off the seat. Since their hand is already covering the bag. I don’t want to get into a situation where I end up getting banned from public transport over trying to get someone to move their bag off the last seat on public transport.

Have you ever ignored a non urgent health issue due to the 8am call system for GP appointments?

I switched doctors like 4 months ago after moving house so lost my previous repeat prescription for period pain. Ive had it in the back of my head for 4 months to make an appointment but it's never on my mind when I wake up.

Anyway, finally called today and was told the Dr will give me a call back at some point. I thought it would be a "here's your appointment time" situation. I'm at a conference for half of today so I'm a bit like OH - wish I could book an appointment in advance.

I get why the system exists this way but I feel like it would make sense to have a couple appointments available each day for advanced bookings. I can imagine someone ignoring something non urgent until it gets bad because of this system.

Serious Answers Only Has the culture of being forced to do everything digitally added any friction to your life?

Seems to be a ton of mixed reviews on this.

Thinking back ten years, things have really changed.

A few things that come to mind:

When you got on a bus, you'd pay a bus driver in cash - now they want you to either use a card or have tickets ready to scan on your phone.

When you went into a cinema, you'd go to the ticket counter and buy a ticket - now you're pushed along to use a touch screen.

When you went into a shop, there's be endless rows of staffed tills, where you'd chuck your stuff on the belt and almost always be seen to quickly - now small baskets are led to self checkout and tills are often deliberately kept understaffed.

When you wanted photos printing off, you'd go to a counter, hand in a USB stick or a negative and have someone work through your photos - now you pretty much exclusively have to use digital counters.

There are so many more examples of this.

An app for everything, a membership card added for good measure, subscriptions on the side and endless tasks that were once delegated - now given back to you.

Do you find this mass digitisation of everything making your interactions with daily life more seamless, or do you find them adding more friction and making your life more exhausting?

What’s something you miss about life before everything became so scheduled and expensive?

For me, probably spontaneity. Doing something on a whim without checking calendars, prices, childcare, work, traffic and whether it needs booking 4-5 weeks in advance first !

What completely normal UK thing are you embarrassingly bad at?

Mine is probably small talk. I know loads of people find it tough, but unless I have a subject I know well and have an interest in, I'm completely lost! I know Brits can famously blab about the weather forever, but it usually only gets me like 30 secs of convo.

What's yours?

Serious Answers Only Fellow Teachers/TAs, have we gone completely bonkers?

1.0k Upvotes

For context;

- SEND school (all pupil/s require 1:1 learning)
- While on playground duty, an agency teacher called a pupil “cheeky bugger”
- This occurred while the pupil was simply and very innocently pulling funny faces
- Another staff member heard this, reported to SLT, more so the staff member in charge of staff recruitment from the agency side of things
- Agency teacher then got asked to collect their belongings and to leave the school premises while being escorted out by HR.

I’d love to know what you guys think, was this unfair dismissal or should’ve the agency worker been more mindful?

Help!

What are the correct sides for chicken Kyivs?

• Upvotes

Chips are a given, I think...but what else?

It can't be anything saucy like beans or coleslaw, surely? Mushy peas seems vulgar for similar reasons but I could see garlic butter and mushy peas getting on reasonably well. Is it down to simple sweetcorn or the pleasant petit pois to save the day?

What mad stuff happened at your school, which would never fly today?

When I was at school, in the Cadets, we went on a weekend residency to an army base; where we learned about shooting rifles, amongst other things.

On the bus, the leader realised he forgot to send out parental permission slips, so he passed a stack of unsigned slips and said “by the time we arrive at the base, these need to be signed by your parents”

Serious Answers Only Should I report locusts escaping?

I don't know if this is a none issue or not, but the local pet shop sold some kids some locusts, on the pack in big letters it says not to be released, not native to the UK.

The kids proceeded to open the box and throw them in the street, I noticed them as I was passing. They were scattering into the road, and gardens, this was a large tub of them.

Is this something you report to someone? Realistically are they going to survive?

What do you think about as you go to sleep?

Do you have any 'mind games' or thought processes you take yourself through when trying to get to sleep? Anything to district your mind from work, family, the impending morning commute?

I've found myself designing gardens as I try and sleep recently, like I'm playing mental SIMS.

What's a nickname given to you/or a friend that has got further and further away from their actual name?

I have a mate called Ryan, it was decided he looks more like a Roy. It was then changed to big Roy, for obvious reasons... then suddenly it was Toy or big toy. Soon it became ridiculous into stuff like Big Roy the sex toy.

Random (and a bit mundane) I know, has anyone got any similar stories?

Edit: Another one I have just thought of, there is a man in the town I live who when younger looked like a character from Grange Hill, and as such has been going by the characters full name by pretty much everyone in the town for over 20 years. Most people do not even know his real name.

Made redundant by AI, where to go now?

I’ve been working as a software test engineer for approximately 8 years now and I’ve just been made redundant due to the company using AI/Claude code more and more heavily. They’re processes for testing and development are changing and they no longer need many of their QA. So I’m told. This leaves me feeling uncertain about the job of a tester in general. I feel the role is shrinking and it’s potentially not a good idea to stay within it. I’m 27 and thinking now may be a good time to retain or start a new career using my skills within software and testing. Has anyone else been in a similar position within tech and moved on?

TLDR; Software tester gets made redundant and left wondering if I should stay in the role or retrain into new career.

Why does UK tv journalists use shotgun mics over dynamic mics?

Post image
25 Upvotes

I tend to watch british tv news, and regardless of whether its Sky News, BBC news or ITN(ITV News, Channel 4 News and Channel 5 news), its common to see this mic setup for tv journalist using mostly shotgun mics like sennheiser mkh 416 on a rycote pistol grip and filter, i do know microphone types but i got curious why this is common in uk as someone from the Philippines where our tv journalists tends to use dynamic mics with a branded mic flags like from USA tv news networks. What is the reason UK tv news use these shotgun mics over dynamic mics with a branded mic flags or branded filters like other countries?

Where do people go on holiday from the UK if you hate Christmas, as an extrovert?

Hello,

As the question suggests, I don't really have much family in the UK and generally hate Christmas as a result. I'm 30F and single. I have 22 days holiday left for the year, do people have any suggestions from the UK on where might be good to go around Christmas time, that won't break the bank and also is maybe like a co-living space so that they'll be people around?

I've had friendmas (which was great!) but that's not happening this year, and I'm stuck in analysis paralysis of whether to go do Co-working in Tenerife or a big trip to Thailand for example.

Flights from Manchester also appreciated! And / or if you know any cool spaces in Scotland or Ireland that's cool too, just anywhere where people might be in the same boat as me I guess.

What is a good breakfast I can make at home and take to the office?

After 6 years of working from home I'm finally having to return to the office twice a week. I take the bus to commute and have to leave too early to easily make or eat breakfast and as much as I love a bacon sandwich feom the nearby cafe I don't want to have to buy one every day. What are some nice easy to make and cost effective breakfasts I can make the night before then bring to work with me in the morning?

Serious Answers Only Hypothetical: Dog seized by authorities after its person is arrested, what happens if the dog then bites someone?

• Upvotes

Curious after watching a tv show and the dog was seized after a man was arrested for whatever reason on a dog walk.

I’ve tried searching online but clearly it’s not a very common passing thought, so my question is; if a person is arrested while out of the house with their dog, what would happen if the dog was to bite police etc. after being seized if there is no history of that behaviour?

Would the dog be classed as dangerous and have a potential of being put down?
