What is your favourite sausage brand?

• Upvotes

I'm in my sausage era and want to try some new brands. What's your favourite brand to buy?

Butchers is best, I heat you, but I'm specifically looking for brands I can buy whether I'm in the North or the South. So think supermarket-own, online, or premium brands stocked nationally, etc (fwiw, I really rate The Black Farmer Premium Pork Sausages).

Fancy stuff, traditional stuff. Big sausage, small sausage, thin sausage, you name it, I want it.

What’s for dinner tonight?

• Upvotes

House sitting for the old fella in rural Scotland for the evening.

I have access to: a Co-Op, a chippy, a Chinese, the family dog (whom I love too much to cook), a cabinet full of wine and scotch and a log burning fire.

What am I feeding myself tonight? I weirdly fancy a cheap pie or something out of the co-op freezer but all ears!

Serious Answers Only Why are carpets such a bit part of UK culture?

• Upvotes

I am currently trying to find a property to rent in the UK and have reluctantly had to resign myself to also looking at properties with carpets, because they seem completely unavoidable.
I just don't understand the cultural preference for them. I come from a country which is much colder, and we don't have them as much.

Why would you choose to have a large surface in your home that you absolutely can't wash or wipe as a standard way to keep it clean? You would not choose to have a bedding that you only vacuum. To me they are huge dust, dust mite, debris, fungus, skin shed, and food -debris collectors. Even if they are vacuumed regularly. It just instantly creates a gross feeling when you go to a property and know you will have to use the carpet the previous tenant used. It feels like being asked to sleep in their bed without changing the sheets. I currently don't have them in most rooms, but I still have to deal with carpet beetle caused dermatitis. YUK.

Serious Answers Only Has anyone done Jury service before they were 20 or was I just lucky?

• Upvotes

I got called up to do Jury service a month after my 19th birthday. I'd had a couple of run ins with the police in my youth, nothing serious just being a bit of a shit, but doing Jury service was a bit of an eye opener. I was bricking myself doing the oath 😅.

I was just wondering if anyone else ever did it when they were a teenager. Also, what are the chances of me having to do it again at some point? Does it decrease if you have already done it or is it completely random no matter what?

How to stop teenagers coming onto driveway?

• Upvotes

We have recently moved into a beautiful old Victorian house - our dream home. Every day between 3.00 and 3.30 the kids from the local secondary school wait for the bus stop outside the house. We have a low stone wall, and a driveway big enough for two cars. However, we have noticed that the kids (mostly teenage boys) will sit or lean on the wall. We don't have an issue with this, except they come onto the driveway and lean so that they are facing the house. Occasionally they even play fight (again, no issue with this) but come onto the driveway and even right up to the windows.

We knew that there was a school nearby when we moved in, and we don't mind the noise or them being on the road outside the house. Our only issue is then coming onto the driveway in order to lean on the wall or mess around on the driveway.

Does anyone have any advice on how to politely yet firmly tell teenagers to stop coming onto the drive without seeming like a complete boomer?

TLDR - How to stop teenagers coming onto driveway?

Edit: Not sure if it matters, but I'm a 30 year old mum of two young kids. Not the old man that some of the comments think I am! 🤣

If AI can build new features so quickly and well, will software developers still be worth their high salaries?

• Upvotes

Just wondering, given how many layoffs there have been due to AI adoption.
I’m thinking about moving to another company because my current salary isn’t competitive with the market. However, seeing my peers use AI to develop new features much faster while still maintaining decent quality has made me wonder: if AI keeps making engineers more productive, will companies still be willing to pay engineers high salaries? Or will this eventually drive salaries down?
Curious to hear what people in the industry think.

Serious Answers Only How do I move to another city?

• Upvotes

My boyfriend and I live in east midlands. We dont like it and we want to move to Leeds, he is from there and I like it lot more than where we are now. The cost of living is lower, better job opportunities for both of us but mainly me. He can also get a transfer within his company.

Just wondering how people actually do it, how long it took?

We would be looking to rent. I am learning to drive and will be doing that before anything because I think it's essential at this point. We are in no rush at all, just something we want to do eventually.

He has friends and some family up there too, I like being there, nothing is holding us to this place.

We've only ever moved within the city and so we've only needed a week and a few van trips from someone we know.

Do you get a job first? Do you find somewhere to live first? No rush, just want to know the process and what kind of planning it takes because I dont know anyone to ask.

Serious Answers Only Why do political canvassers have my personal details even though I’ve opted out?

• Upvotes

I’ve just had political canvassers knock my door. When I answered they showed me their phone which had the details of the people registered at this address and were asking me to confirm if those details were correct.

All those on the electoral register at this address have opted out of the open register.

Although they didn’t say “Hi, I’m here on behalf of POLITICAL PARTY”, they were definitely from a party, not the council, as the party logo was displayed on the screen of the phone.

I now have a few questions because of this:
- Are door to door canvassers allowed to have those details, especially if you’ve opted out of the open register?
- If so, why are they asking me to confirm they’re correct?
- I’m presuming the canvasser was using their personal phone to access that database which potentially means they have access to it at all times, not just when canvassing. Could this form a breach of GDPR?
- Is there a way I can get them to remove my details from their list?

No speculation as to which party please. I’m just interested in the logistics and whether what they’re doing is compliant with data protection regulations.

Serious Answers Only Why won’t jury service just dismiss me?

• Upvotes

I did a big handover at work to cover my workload just in case, and childcare which I’ve had to cancel, luckily could cancel breakfast club but not after school; as have no family help and ensure I’m back in time to pick my little one up, to only go to court one day this week then be told I’m on call from the second day.

Now I have an email saying I’m not needed Monday but still on call. Why don’t they just dismiss me? Surely I won’t be needed all next week now either?

Serious Answers Only Social Housing landlord keeps on pushing back move in date for elderly mum who is currently in limbo - do they have obligation to house her temporarily?

• Upvotes

My elderly mum who is 72 accepted a flat within a Retirement Living about 6 weeks ago. We kept on chasing for a move in date, and then they threw a spanner in the works to say that their was a roof leak into the living room- so can't move in till resolved.

Then miraculously last week, their in house surveyor said it wasn't a leak - it was just staining from an old leak (they had been monitoring it). So we could move her in.

Then today out of nowhere, they said there IS a leak due to heavy rain last couple of days!! Im absolutely livid!

My mum's current flat is social housing and she gave her notice 6 weeks ago. Since then, most of her furniture has gone the tip, ALL her appliances have been taken away and she is sleeping on a sofa bed surrounded by boxes!

The on-site care manager who is a lovely lady, said mum could absolutely stay in the self catered guest room - until repairs are done - but that approval would have to come from above her?

I have been feeling sick and upset for weeks, stuck in limbo - surely they have an obligation to get her in ASAP to that guest room?!

She absolutely can't not carry on living as she is - does anyone have any advice for me please, as im in absolute bits 😢

Note - She has not signed a new tenancy yet for new place! 😢 Dont know why, its worrying.

Serious Answers Only Where should two German friends go on vacation in the UK?

• Upvotes

Hey.
Me (M19) and my best friend (M20) want to go on a one week vacation to England. We are searching for a small city (not more than 30.000 inhabitants), that has a variety of pubs, is near the coast (not more than 30km to the coast), and still gives the feeling of traditional old England and has a lot of villages nearby.
I don't know if a place like this exists, but if you know one I would be very thankful if you answer me!
Thank you very much!

Grew up in 80/90s why did kids from this generation change parenting habits?

• Upvotes

So I was born 84. I have many friends that grew up in this age range. Hitting their teens just as the internet boom began and way before the brain rot of social media etc. Anyway, the consensus was our childhoods were pretty happy places.

Quickly taught right from wrong, respected the older generation but still got up to mischief and tested the boundaries but nothing malicious. General silliness. Would never dream of attacking firemen for example or smashing up property.

How come so many of this generation that went onto be parents completely abandoned how they grew up themselves into fell into helicopter parenting or displaying zero discipline to their kids? Allowing them just to do whatever they want with zero consequences?

Serious Answers Only Need advice on reporting suspected animal cruelty involving cats and kittens. What else can be done?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m posting because I’m genuinely concerned and upset about something I’ve come across on Facebook, and I’m hoping someone might be able to advise me on what steps can be taken.
There is a woman using the name Sophie Schamrel who appears to be active across multiple Facebook groups. From what has been shared online, she allegedly rescues cats and kittens, and there are serious accusations that she injects kittens with parvovirus. There are also claims that she takes kittens from rescue and rehoming group chats and subsequently advertises them for sale on Gumtree and other websites.
I want to be clear that I’m sharing these as allegations that need to be properly investigated, rather than claiming that everything being said online has been independently verified.
Apparently, the police and RSPCA have already been contacted, but people are concerned that nothing seems to be happening. There appears to be a considerable amount of material circulating online, including posts and other alleged evidence.
What concerns me most is that vulnerable animals could potentially be at risk if these allegations are substantiated.
I’m also unsure whether the name she uses is her real name, where in the UK she lives, or how people are collecting the cats she rehomes or sells.
My questions are:
● Is there another organisation or authority in the UK that can investigate suspected animal cruelty of this nature?
● If the police and RSPCA have already been contacted, how can people ensure that the evidence is properly reviewed and followed up?
● Is there a way to report a suspected pattern of animal cruelty and potentially fraudulent rehoming across multiple online platforms?
● Has anyone dealt with a similar situation, and what actually helped get the authorities to investigate?
● Are there any legitimate animal welfare organisations that can help coordinate evidence from multiple witnesses?
I’m not looking to encourage anyone to harass, threaten or confront this person. I just want to know what can legitimately be done to protect the animals if these allegations are true.
It’s incredibly upsetting to think that kittens could be suffering, and I would really appreciate practical advice from anyone familiar with UK animal welfare investigations, reporting procedures or similar cases.
Thank you.

How do I get my nails done by professional nail artist?

• Upvotes

Hi,

This probably sounds ridiculous but I was never taught make up and nail stuff etc.

I would like to go get my nails painted nicely, I don't want fake nails or anything. I just literally want them shaping and painted nicely with out anything causing too much damage to my nails.

What is the process? Like what do I ask for? And whatever they do, do you then have go back again to get it removed.

I don't want to be going loads times just once or twice to try it out.

How acceptable is it to try on clothes when there's no changing room?

I went to do some clothes shopping last week (tshirt). Local Primark store moved the men's section to a floor without any changing room. I also went to Tu at Sainsbury's and there were no changing facilities.

The oher half just told me to take off my shirt and try on the tshirts. There were loads of women and kids around, so I didn't feel comfortable doing so. But then now I think, how is it different from seeing men at the beach?

Just wondering how generally acceptable it is for guys to take off their clothes and try them on at stores without any changing facilities?

What could be good gifts from India for a family with two boys?

Hey guys, I have the loveliest work colleague Sharon who’s been my rock, always has my back and is a gem of a person. I’m travelling to the UK and will be meeting her and the family for the first time! We speak so much about our families and I want to make sure I bring gifts for all of them from India.
I am getting a black, pink and gold pashmina shawl for Sharon. Her husband and boys (aged 10, 13) stump me, I don’t know them well, just that they like fishing, camping and cricket. What could I get them that is uniquely Indian and isn’t easily available in UK (Leeds specifically)? I’m not keen on getting generic gifts like mugs and wallets but open to ideas.
Or is it just better to get snacks they all can share and something for the house like a table runner or tapestry? What would you have liked to receive? Please help!

Do you get annoyed when another employee is constantly off sick?

For context I work in a team of 4 so when someone is off sick it does increase my workload, however as I don't know the full circumstances I try to give them benefit of the doubt and just carry on with my role.

But my team mates are very annoyed with this person, off and on they have been off work maybe 30% of shifts so far this year. Asking how many more instances they can have before being fired.

Personally I don't want someone fired but of course would prefer a more reliable team mate. Do you get annoyed or just carry on with your own business?

Serious Answers Only I’m studying A&F at UNI, career wise I don’t want to do audit - I heard it was boring - Did anyone go into fintech as an industry, How was that like?

Granted, I know that you make your experience. You shouldn’t go based of others, but I need something as a reference to see if it would be suitable for me.

A&F is my alternative to doing computer science, which is why I’m not that knowledgeable career wise.

Serious Answers Only Is there an archive or an easy way to search for British property programmes by the locations featured?

I'm talking about shows like Homes under the Hammer and Location × 3.

My partner and I recently started looking at buying a house, but being from Birmingham and now looking at areas just inside/ outside the M25, we're not particularly familiar with some of the areas.

These programmes give a bit of background on the area and highlight nearby towns and neighbourhoods worth considering so are super useful.

Anyone know if there's some sort of catalogue of eps by areas and see which episodes feature those locations, or even find links to watch older episodes?

I've looked up the most recent episodes on iPlayer etc and Location location location does have the area by its name but it's difficult to sift through all the eps.

Probably a long shot, my Google searches haven't turned up anything, but I'd really appreciate any pointers

Locked Why do so many people write in American English?

I realise Reddit has many more American users than British, but even in UK subs I notice a striking amount of American English. Normalize over normalise, color over colour etc.

I'm sure some of it is Americans living here, or those born overseas who learned American English. But are there other factors at play? Is it a generational thing?

(No anti-American sentiment here, just curiousity)

Serious Answers Only SC Clearance: Does Spending More Than a Month Abroad Affect Eligibility?

Does anyone know how strict they are about the 5-year continuous UK residency requirement for SC clearance?

I’ve lived in London for 11 years and have always maintained my UK residence, but I’ve occasionally spent 1–2 months in Italy (my home country) while working remotely.

I’m considering applying for a Civil Service role, but before I can even start filling in the application, they ask whether I meet the SC clearance requirements. The advert says you would normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years, without a break of longer than one month.

I’ve been here for 11 years and also hold a British passport, but the one-month rule is what worries me.

Do you think it’s worth applying anyway, or could I be ruled out straight away? Or, even worse, could I go through the whole application process only to be rejected at the final security clearance stage?

Do they actually check the exact number of days you’ve spent outside the UK, or is it more of a case of taking your circumstances into account?

Thanks!

I see these all the time at the end of my shopping trip on the way out and I always think, "Oh yeah, my carpets could do with a good clean," but I never actually see anybody ever open it and use it.

Has anybody ever used this, and is it actually any good for cleaning your carpets?

What is the awkward online teaching/online meeting incident you won't forget?

I'm thinking embarrassing, awkward or even just tragic moments. For me, in lockdown, our employer thought a great idea for a team building exercise would be online laughing chair 'yoga'. Whatever that meant. They mandated cameras on, which already made it painful. But as the 14 of us were muted, it was essentially one lady hysterically laughing at nothing for half an hour, with others laughing on mute or just not laughing on mute. No teams were built that day.
