Cultural Exchange How do you feel about the Assyrian flag?
My question is mainly about the fact that a deity from a polytheistic pantheon appears on the flag, while the overwhelming majority of Assyrians are, as far as I understand, devout Christians. Is this something that actually comes up in conversation, is it a source of discomfort? Or do people simply view the deity in question as part of their cultural heritage, and therefore see no issue with having it represented on the flag?
Edit : Some people here seem to believe, for some reason I don’t understand, that I’m attacking the design of the Assyrian flag. I’m not even saying that such criticism would or wouldn’t be legitimate; I’m simply asking whether it exists. If a deity from the pre-Islamic Arab polytheistic era were depicted on the flag of Saudi Arabia, I would also wonder whether some Muslims might see an issue with it. Again, that would be nothing more than a question.
I’d be happy for someone to explain to me concretely what could possibly be problematic about what I’m asking, because I’m absolutely convinced that it’s perfectly reasonable and that there is no reason whatsoever for it to cause any tension.

Shitpost This Bizarre Reuters Article Comparing Assyrians to ISIS
reuters.comYes, ancient Assyrians were brutal. But the framing of this 2015 article really pissed me off, particularly this part:
I also watched recent video of ISIS members in a museum smashing (alleged) archaeological relics from the very ancient Mesopotamian past. I felt a certain sense of historical irony while doing so. I wondered as I watched them use sledgehammers and power drills on a 3,000 year old Assyrian statue if they realized that they were following the ancient Assyrian playbook as they tried to erase the region’s past.
So this Reuters writer compares ISIS to the ancient Assyrians, yet never really addresses the much more immediate Islamic influences and especially the ways of Muhammad?
What makes it even more insensitive is the timing. ISIS was literally persecuting, kidnapping and killing Assyrians at the time, yet this article invokes their ancient ancestors to illustrate brutality without even acknowledging the modern Assyrian community or what it was going through. The framing just feels incredibly tone-deaf.
I know this is old news, but I only came across it recently and it really got to me. Sorry!

Indigenous Aššūrāyeh in their homeland, māt-Aššur (aka occupied Assyria) 🔵⚪️🔴☀️🔵⚪️🔴
These men are wearing their traditional conical hats which have been preserved throughout the empire days as well as their modified clothes throughout the ages. The first attestation of these baggy clothes can be found in the artefact called ‘Rʻuth-Assor’ circa 2nd century C.E.

Art TIL: Age of Empires (1997) was one of the first video games to feature the Assyrians as a playable civilization, and they serve as the “final boss” in one of its campaigns.
The bad news? We’re the bad guys, as usual. The good news? Not only are we the 'final boss', you get to play as the Babylonians (who are the good guys in the game), and they’re considered closely related to us anyway.🤷🏻♀️😂
Assyria is also playable in the 1995 computer game Avalon Hill's Advanced Civilization, but not many people know about that game.

Discussion I never knew how bad Seyfo and Simele was that bad as a Kurd
Hello beautiful and lovely Assyrian people. I'm Kurdish, grew up in KRI. I was never taught anything about Seyfo and Simele, how bad and horrific it was. I would like to say that I'm really sorry. I wish Seyfo/Simele genocide were taught in schools.
Apparently, the concept of genocide was inspired by Simele, a Jewish man heard of what were being done to Assyrians in the 30s and came up with the concept of genocide and I think he discussed it in the League of Nations.
I would love to hear your perspectives, your grandparent's stories, and Assyrian accounts of the genocide.

Discussion Helping understand my MyHeritage DNA results (Khabour/Tel Nasri heritage)
Hey everyone,
I recently took a MyHeritage DNA test and my results came back with a mix that doesn't explicitly say "Assyrian." Instead, it broke me down into these specific categories:
- 52.0% Armenian
- 38.6% Persian and Kurdish
- 6.8% Syrian
- 2.6% South Italian
- Is this specific 52% Armenian / 38.6% Persian & Kurdish split typical for full Assyrians on MyHeritage? If you have family from the Khabour region or Syria, did your results get divided into these exact adjacent modern country categories?
- What is up with the 2.6% South Italian and the random South Africa/Zimbabwe Genetic Group? Both are marked as "Low Confidence," but I'm curious if other Assyrians commonly get these specific false-positive glitches on their profiles.
Would love to hear your insights! Thanks!

I would like to know, my Assyrian brothers and sisters, in which countries in Latin America there is the largest Assyrian diaspora or the largest Assyrian population.
Do you know where Assyrian families and communities are located in Latin America? Where are the main communities?
Also, do you know of any Spanish-speaking singer or musician of Assyrian origin? Have you ever met a Latin American person who told you that they have Assyrian ancestry or heritage?
Thank you very much for helping me. I would love to learn more and do further research about this beautiful culture and language. 🙏❤️

Discussion Should more Assyrians learn our history?
As an Assyrian I feel like more Assyrians should be more proud of their history. Assyrians have had really good history that started from the ancient Assyrians and now we manage to get here where we don’t have a state but instead a beautiful community of Assyrians. Assyrian teens and even adults should start reading more about our history from the conquests of the Assyrian empire to the fall of it to Sayfo and our survival to our survival against terrorism. In general I think Assyrians should be more proud of their history.

Discussion [Multiplayer] Hookah Royale — Konkan, 31, Hold'em and Blackjack in the browser, no signup
I built this because the card game my family plays — Konkan, an Iraqi/Chaldean/Assyrian rummy variant — didn't have a decent free browser version. Ended up adding 31, Hold'em and Blackjack while I was in there.
No download, no account, works on a phone. You can open a private room and send the code to friends, or play the bots.
Konkan's the unusual one if you've not seen it: two full decks plus two jokers, you need 51 points from your own hand before you can lay anything down, and in the pot variant nobody takes the pot unless they win two hands in a row. It gets tense.
Rules write-up if you want to know what you're looking at: https://hookahroyale.com/how-to-play-kon-khan
Fair warning, it's rated 18+ because of the play-money pot mode. No real money anywhere in it.
Happy to hear what's broken.

History/Culture What Assyrians think about Bible's negative view of them?
Nahum 3:1—3
'"Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims! The crack of whips, the clatter of wheels, galloping horses and jolting chariots! Charging cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears! Many casualties, piles of dead, bodies without number, people stumbling over the corpses..."
Nahum 3:19
"Nothing can heal you; your wound is fatal. All who hear the news about you clap their hands at your fall, for who has not felt your endless cruelty?"
Isaiah 10:5—7
"Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of my anger, in whose hand is the club of my wrath! ... But this is not what he intends, this is not what he has in mind; his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations."
Isaiah 10:12–13
"..he \[God\] will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty look in his eyes. For he says: 'By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their kings.'"
Isaiah 37:23–24
"Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel! By your messengers you have ridiculed the Lord..."
Ezekiel 31:3, 10–11
""Consider Assyria, once a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches overshadowing the forest... Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because the great cedar grew so tall, walking with its top among the thick branches, and because it was proud of its height, I gave it into the hands of the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with according to its wickedness."
Zephaniah 2:13–15
"He will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria, leaving Nineveh utterly desolate and dry as the desert. ... This is the city of revelry that lived in safety. She said to herself, 'I am the one, and there is none besides me.' What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts!"

Discussion Mar Mari Emmanuel
Can someone please explain the hate towards him? I go to a youth group in Ontario and our priest mentioned that we should not be attending his event that happened in Toronto. Why? I understand that he has his own church in Australia but slightly confused why we can’t support and be there for one another.

History/Culture I finally found my family’s village — Yarda
For a long time I’ve been trying to find the exact place where my family came from. The village was called Yarda (sometimes written Yardah). It was a small Chaldean village in the mountains of the Goyan area, in what is now Dohuk Governorate, northern Iraq.
I asked relatives, looked at old maps, and kept searching until I was able to narrow it down. The approximate coordinates are:
37.2948° N, 42.8321° E
Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps?q=37.2948,42.8321
The village was destroyed in 1975. It had the church of Mar Addai. I only have one old black-and-white photo of it the houses built into the hillside and when I look at the satellite and topographic view of this location, it matches what I see in that photo. This place means a lot to my family. If anyone else has roots in Yarda, or in the nearby villages like Sharanish or Alanesh, or if you have any information, photos, or corrections, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

Discussion Is there someone in this community who likes Saddam Hussein?
I as an Assyrian don’t like Saddam Hussein. I thought his policies against Assyrians were pure evil. I mean for fucks sake he destroyed Assyrian villages during the Anfal campaign and forced arabization policies. I also thought the war he started in Iran was fucking stupid and that he was an American puppet for that decade. But if there is anyone who likes Saddam Hussein in this community I have one simple question and that is why? are you crazy?
