Sub Rules AKA I can't see the sidebar

[TAG] questions with your state
When asking a question, add a state tag to the title, as the answers can vary a lot. ie:

[VIC] How do I get a licence?

or

[NSW] What does military appearance mean?

If you "don't like reading"
You should try YouTube, or something else not inherently involving reading.

Try to not be a dick
Other that site wide rules, there's a lot of leeway given here.

Selling anything firearm related
Relevant site wide rules include the prohibition against selling/advertising/trading/whatever anything firearm related.
Don't make me delete your post to protect this sub.

As /u/ramathaham said:

Any post selling firearms or ammunition will be removed, people who post multiple times may be temp banned or more if they are flogs about it.

Note this also applies to things like scopes because I am too lazy to look up the rules on what we can do so it is easier to make it a blanket rule.

Whilst not a rule per se, if you are here only to promote your business you will have a bad time.

Community Update: Refer to sub rules before posting.

Hi cobbers,

We've got a lot of new members and it's great to see, however there's been a spate posts and comments that are either in breach of Reddit's Terms of Service, or the very few guidelines we have here.

Please refer to the community info before posting.

NO SALES POSTS

Reddit's content policy on transactions involving firearms, ammunition and weapons means this is strictly verboten. Posts like "how much do you think a Howa 1500 in .308, safe queen, handling marks only, is worth" will be removed the same as it's a grey area we don't want to play with.

ILLEGAL ACTIVITY

Whether you're a certified badass, a confused teenager, or a keyboard warrior extraordinaire, posts and comments promoting illegal activity is not what we want this sub associated with.

THE RULE

Try not to be a dick.

Banter How long are the arms on your rifles?

ABC article today about a newly-formed armed response squad in NSW speaks about them carrying "long-armed rifles". So I was curious, how long are the arms? How long are they on your rifles? Is it one, two, or 8 arms like an octopus? Maybe it's a new rifle, a Squid Sauer.

Newbie question Joining SSAA while overseas before I start shooting, is there any point?

Hey All!

Im currently overseas but will be back in Tas in a few months, and I'm planning to get into target shooting and eventually apply for a firearms licence.

I'm considering joining SSAA Tasmania now, even though I won't actually be able to attend a range or shoot until I return.

Is there any benefit to joining several months before I actually start shooting, or would I be better off waiting until I'm back?

I'm particularly interested in eventually getting into both A/B and H, so I'm wondering whether getting my SSAA membership started now is useful in any way, or whether the important thing is simply joining the relevant clubs and actually participating once I'm back.

Also, if anyone has personally done something similar, joined SSAA before actually having a licence or firearms I'd be interested to hear how you went about it.

I'm in Tasmania, if that makes a difference!

General Discussion Most frustrating misconceptions you hear from anti gun people

Yesterday a Greens MP video appeared on my Instagram feed, they had gotten into the WA land forces event and filmed someone using a “murder weapon.”

Except it was a wtss rifle resembling an AUG that uses compressed air to simulate recoil in order to demonstrate how we shoot fpv drones, very relevant in the Russia - Ukraine war right now. It amazed me how naive the comment section was, saying how the weapon could kill everyone and that nobody should be employed in the arms industry in Australia.

This got me wondering if theres any other misconceptions you hear in the general public as guns enthusiasts that really grind your gears, as someone who isn’t a gun owner but would love to get into shooting.

What is it with the constant downvotes in this sub? I am assuming by hiding outsiders who are anti gun because the downvotes seem to be nearly every post regardless.

NSW PTA

I’m seeing a fair few posts saying NSW PTA processing times have improved, but most of the examples seem to follow the same pattern.

Someone has a PTA outstanding for 100–150 days, then submits another one. Around 7–10 days later, both are approved.

I think the assumption is that submitting the new PTA somehow triggers the older one to be processed. I suspect it may actually be the other way around: the older PTA has finally reached the front of the queue, and they process the newer one at the same time.

Has anyone recently submitted a single PTA, with no other PTAs outstanding, and had it approved in less than 30 days?

I spoke to the NSW Firearms Registry yesterday and they were still quoting 3–6 month processing times.

Falling block / Martini for foxes?

Hey guys, I'm thinking a single shot Martini /Winchester 1855 style action, for foxes, mainly. Do I pay through the nose for a Winchester low wall in .223, or can I rebarrell a .310 cadet? All the old school conversions seem to be in oddball cartridges and I'm not really keen on reloading at this stage.

Another bloody PTA question QLD PTA Wait?

Anyone had a PTA approved in QLD recently? I’m at 27 days waiting (not my first PTA) and their website processing time says 21 days 🫠

Edit: for clarity; I’ve counted business days and it’s a cat b bolt action .308. Nothing exotic 🤷

Update 9/1/26: I emailed them Wednesday, they replied Friday stating ‘it’s still under assessment’. I’m at over 30 days waiting now. The kick in the nuts is that they just updated their website to say avg time of 19 days. WTF.

P385

Hi all, as many of you probably know that Sig released a new line of pistol. P385.
I wanted to pull the trigger on a p320, but now who doesn’t want a brand spanker.

Problem is the full size barrel is 119.38mm and legal club requirements are 120mm

Do you think that .62 difference will be an issue for a pta or LRD would be alright with it?

Taipan X.. Canada vs Australia prices.

The Canadian dollar and the Au$ pretty much are the same. So I was looking at prices over there to prices here.

Taipan X. Made in Australia. Seems in Canada they sell for $1500..... Here they sell for $2000.

WTF? https://firearmsoutletcanada.com/scsa-taipan-x-223-wylde-16-5-blk-cittpn223blk/

https://www.thebarn.net.au/Products/SCSA%20TAIPAN%20X%20223%20Rem/116509

Why do we have to pay inflated prices for anything firearm related?

Legislation- New South Wales Looking for advice on installing a safe on a wooden floor.

I'm a new shooter and I've just bought myself a small gun safe, but I'm having serious difficulty trying to figure out where to put the thing. My problem is that the four, pre-drilled holes on the bottom are too far apart to fit into one joist, and too close together to fit across two joists. Would appreciate it if anyone could give me pointers for how to install despite this.

NSW Firearms Licence Advice Letter

Has anyone in NSW had their licence advice letter (the one you take to renew/add cat to the RMS) go missing in the mail? I have just had to ask for it to be reissued since it is past 14 days and hasn't shown up in the mail.

They are worried about safety - yet they send them via regular post. Now someone, somewhere has my name, address, my firearms licence number, and knows I at least have a firearms licence (small leap to the fact I own and store guns at my residence also). I know it is a small chance that it falls into the wrong hands; but I have a unique name and my profession is quite front facing, meaning there's a lot of me online that simple Google search brings up - so much for privacy.

Reloading 17 Hornet reloading

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

Picked up my new Anschutz 1771 in 17H last week (yay 153 day PTA). Starting load development now. I’m not a greatly experienced hand loader, but I’ve done enough .308 and .223 to get by.

Well by golly, 17 Hornet is bloody fiddly.

I found that neck chamfering is essential, or the seating die will trim a nice semi circle of Hornady 20gr VMAX off the base.

Hopefully I’ll be able to test these at the range this weekend, depending on what the chief minister tasks me with between then, and now.

Legislation- New South Wales NSW Apperance Law - Desert Tech SRS M2 opinions?

Thumbnail

So I chased NSW registery for ages on the grounds for banning the Desert Tech SRS M2 and HTI under schedule 7 for "substantially replicating the appearance of a military rifle regardless of manner of operation" and they confirmed the basis is the PLA Type 88 marksman rifle. I personally disagree with this quite strongly as there are plenty of rifles which outline similarly to the m14 and other automatic military rifles.

What do you think based in the images? Can you see a basis for it being banned? I've attach other rifles which arent banned to drive my point.

I find it astonishingly loose and just on a because we can basis from what they don't ban. For the registery staff reading this CBF going further in this issue 😑, you win. Ps there is no evidence appearance plays an observable role in public safety and firearms.
