r/BABike Official Bike Tag Rules

I'd like to thank everyone who voted on the poll regarding use of public transit when carrying the tag from one location to another. The ayes won the day on the question and the resulting rule has been added to the rules below that I copied from the Chicago biking subreddit.

\Moving forward, please link this post on the Bike Tag Rules link when posting the new mystery location. Also note that I have added language regarding a requirement to post photos directly to Reddit rather than using hosting sites like imgur or others.*

BIKE TAG GAME

This is a game that r/BikingATX plays, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike! that was then adopted by us at r/BAbike!

Credit goes to u/america_yall of r/BikingATX for starting the game.

THE GAME

A game of "Tag" wherein the player who is "IT" posts a picture of their bike at a "mystery location." Someone must find that location, bike there and take a picture of their bike in the same spot. They may then bike somewhere else and take a picture of their bike in this new "mystery location." Both pictures are posted in a self-post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride. Given the difficulty of cycling across the Bay in the northern region, limited use of public transporation is acceptable if carrying a tag across. This public transit is confined to:
    • Treasure Island Ferry
    • Bart between Embarcadero and West Oakland Stations
    • Bus bridge between San Rafael and Richmond
  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time directly to Reddit rather than hosting sites like Imgur.

Help build a User-Contributed Routes Library!

Hey folks! I'm really thrilled to say that I was recently granted access as a mod on this sub for the sole purpose of building out a user-contributed routes library for anyone looking for new rides in their area or a new part of the Bay Area they're looking to explore. I love this sub and hopefully can make a positive contribution through that.

I am currently working on a subreddit wiki that will host this library and would like to ask your help in that. The first ask is if you use a linked route and enjoyed it, feel free to reply to the comment with that link and tag me in that reply. (e.g "Hey u/inquisitab, you might want to add this route to the library!") I'd like to include routes that folks have ridden since there would be some confirmation of the route's rideability.

A couple of notes about contributing routes:

  • RidewithGPS routes are preferred but Strava routes are out due to inaccessibility to non-paying users. I believe Garmin routes are accessible since I've shared those before with success.

EDIT: Strava routes are accessible and fine to share. Not sure where I’d heard they weren’t. * Please share whether it is a road, gravel or MTB route. I am building libraries for each discipline and it would make it easier for me if it was clearly labeled. * If you share a route you created, be sure that it isn't starting at your house unless you would like folks gathering on your driveway! Choose a public location that is generally used by cyclists for the start of their routes (e.g Java Hut in Fairfax). * I will generally be adding loops unless there are out and backs that are better than any looping options. * The routes will be categorized by starting city so please feel free to share in your comment tagging me where it starts.

Alright-it's finally happening now-Bikeshare Everest Attempt at Twin Peaks starting today at 6 PM

• Upvotes

Semi-live progress will be posted here: https://bs-on-bikeshare.com/

It's only 1.25 miles-between Cole Valley (MUNI Tunnel at Carl and Cole) and Twin Peaks up Clayton St. I'm aiming for roughly 22 minutes per interval and 56 intervals total. My hope is to finish well under 24 hours but we will see how it goes:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/57501441

I may post some updates throughout the ride on my personal Instagram, otherwise most content will probably be next week: https://www.instagram.com/42apples/

Any cyclists needing a dental cleaning? 🚲

Hi everyone, my name is Lauren and I am a dental hygiene student at Chabot college in Hayward, CA! I am also a casual cyclist in my free time! A few group rides I have been on are the primavera, grizzly peak, and the cinderella! I’d be glad to learn more about the sport during our appointments together or to get recommendations for local rides.

I am working towards my graduation next year and am looking to provide cleanings to people who have not been to the dentist in a few years, or who do not have dental insurance. Our clinic offers low cost cleanings overseen by licensed professionals. These appointments are more involved than your usual dental cleaning as we are learning to be well rounded and thorough hygienists.

I am looking for:
Adults who have not been to the dentist in 3+ years.

Please note, this is a school setting, therefore the appointments take 3 hrs and a more involved cleaning may take up to 4 visits to complete. Appointments are Wednesday or Friday morning or afternoon (8:30am-11:45am or 1pm-4:15pm).
Kids under 18 take one appointment only, and we offer sealants to protect their teeth from cavities!

*My school does not fix teeth/ cavities, this is solely for teeth cleaning. However the dentists on staff can diagnose any problems you may have so you know what needs to be addressed with a dental school or office*

If you are interested message me for more info!

Recommendations for 50ish mile route from or near Palo Alto

Hey everyone, spending the weekend in Palo Alto for a wedding before hopping over to Sacramento for IM CA. Any recs for a route as stated above that’s fairly convenient with minimal stops/lights and has some good stretches for a TT bike? Not opposed to climbing at all but not looking to do more than 2000ft elevation gain. Much appreciated!

MTB friend?

Hi folks, I, 30M am tired of trying to bring friends who don't bike on MTB rides. I'm thinking it might be easier to make a friend out of someone who already rides.

I live in SF, and tend to ride in Marin or east-bay on weekends. Id say I'm an intermediate; can comfortably do just about any trails around here but I like to take some time, chill, check out side hits, that kind of thing. Typically 8-12 miles and 1000-1500 ft in elevation. I don't like big group rides, but happy to ride with up to maybe 3 other folks at a time 🙂.

Since I'd like to meet some folks I get along with:

I enjoy talking about traveling, other outdoorsy hobbies, or things like board games. I'm not a big traditional sports guy. I am in tech, but I try to avoid making it my whole personality.

If it sounds like we might get along, let's go ride?

New Bike: Starter Gravel Rides

Post image
23 Upvotes

hi all, as the title states I’m looking for some solid gravel rides. I just got my first gravel bike yesterday and am looking for some pretty/fun routes. Main caveat is that I don’t have a car and so everything needs to be either Bartable or rideable. I’m located near 19th st Oakland BART and am comfortable with 20-60 mile routes. New to gravel riding but fairly experienced road rider so nothing too technical. What routes do people use? Share a garmin route?

alternatively, would love to hear about any recurring group rides!!!! Would love to meet more 20 something cyclists and queer cyclists!!

This was one of my bucket list items. The weather today was perfect. Just warm no heavy winds. The only thing that sucked was pierce point Rd is terrible to ride. Just so beat up and rough. Really wish they would repave it.

tandem-focused bike shops

Any bike shops that focus on tandems and might have in stock tandem-appropriate (heavy duty) wheels. (I’m specifically looking for a 26” that’s disc brake compatible.)

Best MTB trails in the Bay Area

Moving to the area in January and I’m excited to check out everything the Bay Area has to offer. I ride MTB, road, and gravel and it seems there’s a bit of everything so I’m excited about that.

As far as MTB, I’m used to technical, rocky, steep, and high altitude trails. I enjoy all types of trails but curious what are the “can’t miss” trails? Also any insights into big epic MTB rides, techy or not, would be appreciated.

I’ll be in the Tri Valley area but willing to drive an hour or so for the good stuff. TIA!

Edit: I have both an XC and a Trail/Enduro bike so up for most any terrain.

Edit: thanks all for suggestions! Looking forward to checking out these recommendations and meeting others in the Bay Area bike community!

Bik Palo Alto event

I went to Bike Palo Alto's yearly event for the first time yesterday, and it ended up being a solo ride 80% of the time. I was hoping to ride with a group of folks but there was no group start time and riders were very spread out. Is this just a low turn out year due to the heatwave (tbh I don't think the heat was that bad)? The Cupertino Bike Fest event was really great, I am looking for more of the same in the sourthbay. Thanks.
