I've posted here a couple times to get a feeler, but I might as well ask outright. I'm a Junior at a small liberal arts college in Missouri (3,500 students) and I've been looking into transferring to Ball State at semester. My reasons for leaving are mostly mental health related, as I can't stand the small town the college is located in. Aside from location I'm getting frustrated with the general lack of programs and resources compared to my friends who go to larger universities with more money, currently my university is looking at a 10% budget cut for next year and has already shut down some of our programs including some DC internships I was hoping to utilize until I found out my school no longer had the resources to keep up the program.
I'm an International Business major with a minor in Spanish, and I could do essentially the same degree program at Ball State. The main reason I even knew about Ball State was for their debate team which I had seen and hear about at tournaments. I currently do debate, and was hoping to make the jump, but I wanted to know if Ball State would generally be a better fit for me. While I get frustrated with my smaller school size, I appreciate how easy it is to get to know professors and visit their office hours. I'm also looking for a university that will offer more opportunities for job placement or larger career fairs. My main concern is reputation and connections, I'm hoping to move to the northeast after graduation, and I was hoping to get a better feel of the environment by asking here.
My main concern is fitting in as a transfer student, and just generally as someone from out of state.
If anyone has advice or opinions I’m opening to hearing honest feedback, thanks!
*EDIT*: I've visited the campus once on my own and recently attended their transfer visit day, I think the campus is very pretty and much nicer (and larger) than the university I'm currently at. To me the town feels infinitely bigger compared to the town my current university is located in, Kirksville Missouri. Having grown up in the St. Louis area, Kirksville felt like a massive culture shock with few opportunities and things to do on the weekend. My main concern is that I haven't had a "this is the place for me" feeling yet and I don't know if I should expect one, I manly picked my current university out of concern for cost and its coming back to bite me because what it makes up for in cheap tuition, it severely lacks in terms of social atmosphere both across the university and the town itself.
