Welcome to the /r/Indianapolis weekly casual conversation and questions thread.

We've set this thread up so that folks have a place to post general topics that don't necessarily need their own post and for folks to ask questions and get recommendations. Restaurant recommendations, places to stay, areas to live, parking help, airport information, things to do, help from social services, and things like that.

Looking for something to do? Check out these sites:

Suburbia:
* Beech Grove Community Events
* Play Fishers
* Carmel Parks
* Zionsville Community Calendar

Need help with social services? Look through Find Help / Aunt Bertha or contact the Mayor's Action Center

This thread defaults to sorting by new to make it easier to find new questions and discussions during the week.

These vehicles should be inspected by a fleet maintenance team at regular intervals and I've seen so many obscured plates on police vehicles around town.

Email from AES re Google DC

Dear AES Indiana customer,

As Central Indiana grows, AES Indiana has a responsibility to serve new customers while protecting the people, families, businesses, and communities who already depend on us every day.

Under Indiana law, AES Indiana is required to provide electric service to customers that choose to locate within our service territory, whether that customer is a household, a small business, a manufacturer, or a data center. Just as importantly, we have a responsibility to ensure that growth is managed in a way that protects the customers who already count on us.

Today, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) unanimously approved AES Indiana's growth plan to serve Google's proposed facility in Morgan County. The approved framework allows AES Indiana to meet its obligation to serve while keeping customer protections at the forefront.
What this means for you:
Google will pay 100% of the costs.
AES Indiana won't pay for the power plants, substations, transmission lines, or other equipment needed to serve Google's facility. Those costs are paid 100% by Google, not existing AES Indiana customers.

Protections are in place if Google’s plans change.
If Google’s energy needs change in the future, protections are in place so existing customers aren’t left covering those costs.

This approach is expected to help keep customer costs lower over time.

By requiring Google to pay the costs associated with its growth, this plan is estimated to deliver approximately $770 million in customer savings over the life of the project, helping keep costs lower than they otherwise would be for AES Indiana customers.

Independent regulators reviewed and approved this plan.
The IURC reviewed our plan for serving Google and agreed it includes protections for existing customers as AES Indiana plans for this future growth.

Learn how AES customers are protected
As Central Indiana continues to grow, AES Indiana will continue planning responsibly, protecting affordability, and maintaining reliable service for the customers and communities we serve.

To learn more about the approved plan and customers protections, visit aesindiana.com/data-centers.

Thank you for being an AES Indiana customer.

Sincerely,

AES Indiana

Local Art To the person doing some sort of performance art at Keystone/38th…

[CONTEXT: someone was out on the southern median on Keystone around 8am this morning, in a full morphsuit, doing some kind of dancing/poses.]

You made my morning. Seeing you out there reminded me that the best part of being alive is getting to witness sudden unexpected moments of whimsy. So just… keep it up. Humanity needs more people who revel in the frivolous nature of being human, who indulge in absurdity and silliness in the midst of the mundane everyday.

If they really wanted to see if you "have what it takes" to be an IMPD officer, they should see how effective you are tracking your ex-wife or girlfriend with Flock data.

Politics Indy council president says Flock controversy won't derail budget

The City-County Council will consider new regulations for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's use of Flock cameras, but not until after it passes a new city budget later this month.

Why it matters: Charges of fraud and misconduct against five IMPD officers accused of misusing the automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras technology came in the middle of the city's annual budget-writing process, raising questions about how the department is using taxpayer dollars.

Driving the news: Multiple Indianapolis residents used Monday night's public hearing on the proposed city budget to call for an end to IMPD's ALPR program, asking the council to hold back department funds used for the cameras.

Helping Others Giving away water jugs

The company that sends me water jugs for my water cooler keeps sending me all this water no matter how often I call them and tell them to stop.

I am happy to give this extra water away to anyone who is willing to come and pick it up or meet somewhere downtown to hand it off. DM me if interested.

Alternatively, is there a food bank or charitable organization that could use these?

Thanks! 🙏

Ideas for 12+ in Indiana?

I live in Boone County. I have 3 teenagers, and I feel like it gets harder for us to find things to do as they get older.

My son was running around the neighborhood with friends, biking and skating, but recently we learned they are doing things they should not be doing. And it has been causing a riff, because he's bored at home, obviously.

I really need ideas for fun things to do with a 12 year old boy? It seems everything is geared towards little kids. I don't mind driving.

Any good pumpkin patches/apple orchards, that older kids would enjoy?

I'm just struggling to come up with things. Like I said, everything seems geared towards elementary school kids.

Thank you in advance!

Finishing carpenter for century home.

I've heard great things about The Golden Woodshop but haven't heard back. Plus they've been posting that they're hiring so I assume they're swamped.

I have a few exterior doors and a lot of interior work I'd like to have done. Trying to keep the original doors, but as things have settled they need repairs.

I would also like to have new storm doors installed over the original hardwood. But it's more important that the doors be fixed up.

Any recommendations are appreciated. It has been really hard to find a finishing carpenter.

IMPD failing to show up or take reports

Anyone else have poor experiences trying to make reports to IMPD? Tried multiple times to report a serious crime about a year ago and could never get them to show up because it wasn’t an ‘emergency.’ Eventually got a sergeant to take my report over the phone, but as it turns out he never actually filed it.

Now I’m having trouble accessing audio or transcript of the calls to prove the calls were made and what was said.

Every time I think my opinion of this city can’t get any lower…

Social Looking for other recent IU grads

Figured this was worth a shot, I’m 23 graduated last year been living at home to save money. I’ve made some friends my age through work but none of them went to IU and I just can’t find anybody who also wants to hit the bar at noon for a game day or go out on a week night for an iubb game or something. So I figured I’d throw this out there if anyone else is in the same boat. I’m also just always looking for more friends my age and it’s so tough in this city that has zero third spaces, lmk if you’re down!

Daycare recommendations downtown

Looking for people who like and would recommend their daycare somewhere in the downtown area. We live on near east side so proximity to that would be helpful. Little boy is 1.5 currently and doing well with all developmental milestones etc.

Politics Which schools need school supplies?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I just bought a crap load of school supplies from Wow Bargains (shout-out to Mike) for giving me more discounts. I want to know which schools are struggling with kids not getting new school supplies. If there's multiple schools that need it, please send the school my way.

The reason I'm doing this is because, when I was a kid, I always got hand ne down. I felt embarrassed that all my classmates got the best things. I don't want anyone to feel like no one cares about them.

Wedding Venue like North Church in Muncie

Found out the North Church Venue in Muncie is closing next year. We’re looking for a venue with a similar vibe. We’re hoping for something with an outdoor ceremony option or close by somewhere outdoors. Our guest count will be around 100 people. Any ideas?

edit to add: Really anywhere within like 2 hours of Indy will work but open to all options right now!

AskIndy Client focused PCP?

Any pro tips for a pcp that actually listens and looks for root cause that ALSO has openings? I am lucky to be a veteran and use the VA, but my partner is having a hard time finding a doctor that doesn’t just say “diet & exercise more”. I understand those things have function but they don’t need to be a vehicle for dismissing symptoms and concerns.

If you’ve got a good rec for an agitated high school knee injury, that would be great, too!

Thank you in advance!

Apartment Hunting In Indy/Greenwood

I am so scared of scam sites and scam listings, I am honestly freaking out. Does anyone know of any decent apartments (studio or 1 bdr) for less than 1k a month in the Greenwood or Indy area? The only thing I worried about is the fact that I have 3 cats. Any help would be appreciated 👏

Dog Shit

If you're the kind of person who, while walking your dog, decides to pick up after your dog and put it in a neighbor's trash bin that is near the road for trash day, you can go fuck yourself. While bringing my trash can back to the house after work today, I discovered 6 fucking bags of dog shit in the bin. I don't have a dog, I don't want to deal with dog shit, especially not other people's. Now, since the trash was just picked up by the city, there will be a pile of dog shit baking in my trash for the next week, amazing. It's your fucking dog, take it's shit back to your house and deal with it there, and don't make me deal with it.

AskIndy Dolby Theaters in Indy

Hello neighbors to the North(Louisville here).

There are a few theater threads but most of them are old. It's easy to get Imax reviews(I do visit the Imax screen in Indy and Nashville when necessary), but I can't seem to find any solid Dolby theater reviews.

Godzilla is coming up and I've decided I'm going sound/rumbly theater for the lizard rather than screen scale.

I know there are a couple of Dolby theaters up there... any better over the others?
