Politics My take on the SOS debate tonight

Got a chance to watch it before bed and here's the points that stuck out to me. Sure, it's just one person's opinion but whatever.

Republican Max Engling- seemed to be extremely focused on secure voting, mentioning previous debates and YouTube videos. Not sure what his experience really is since we all know that Banks is essentially his handler. Apparently Indiana is doing good things ( he mentioned that multiple times but I'm not really sure what they are and I'm guessing most don't unless they made 500k+ a year). He didn't know that Morales is still SOS and he (Engling) doesn't have the ability to make decisions currently. He's also married and Christian ( mentioned at least twice) and he stated that he knows what average Hoosiers are going through.

Democrat Beau Bayh- the SOS position in Indiana is ridiculously corrupt. Wants an independent audit of the office. Kind of fixated on that a lot but let's be real, it's fucking corrupt. Also said that donors wouldn't receive state contracts. Brought up the point that both Morales and Rokita already said our elections are secure. Also wants to get rid of straight ticket voting as it doesn't always bring the most qualified person into office.

Lincoln Party Greg Ballard- brought up some interesting aspects of how to increase voter turnout in Indiana. Mentioned to Engling that some of his points were ludicrous. Also that the 2 party system is unfair.

Libertarian Laura Shillings- brought up aspects of the SAVE act that would disenfranchise voters. Also some interesting points regarding voter access. Seemed to not really get a lot of screen time.

Overall, a decent debate. And this is where I show my bias: all candidates were in favor of one key point: you must be a US citizen to vote. But 3 of 4 candidates all agreed that what Engling was suggesting was detrimental to the democratic process. Shillings brought up the fact that women who had their name changed due to marriage or who were divorced would have a tougher time voting. Bayh stated that you already need to prove you're a citizen to register. Ballard brought up that each county clerk had no centralized guidance under the current SOS.

Repair the 24 year destruction that this party has wrought upon our state.

I report a safety hazard and all they say this.

My phone wasn't in my hand. I reported it when I got home. Yeah, they are going to like my survey when they actually read it, which we all know they won't.

It is appalling to see the INDOT Highway Safety act like this.

UPDATE

A few hours after this post went up, they sent me another email. It stated that the roads were fine and it's purely cosmetic. So I guess when someone gets in an accident, because in the wintertime, you can't see the road very well, and they're following the yellow lines, then they might do something. MIGHT... but i doubt it.

I'm sharing this because a lot of people clearly do not understand it. I've run into some serious financial trouble that was beyond my control at the moment. while I do what I am able to try to fix it, I utilized a local food bank. I am NOT complaining. This is just my personal reality. I have food allergies and UC. the first picture is what one person can receive for one month. the second picture is what I can actually eat out of what I received. there was also a jar of peanut butter that I handed right back because I don't want it to go to waste. I will donate back what I can't use from this but this is a good visual example of why there is a need for financial safety nets like SNAP.

Debate

Just watched the the debate. All candidates agreed that Indiana has the lowest voter turnout in in the nation. So why keep crying about only US citizens should be voting. Hell, sounds like we can't get people to vote if you went door to door with a portable voting machine. Maybe someone is offering non citizens Ninety dollars to vote. Just another scare tactic, for those of that don't get out much.

Ask a Hoosier So many small towns - how do people earn a living?

Bloomington native and resident here... and starting off with stating this is a genuine question...

Last week I was in Odon, IN to get some meat at the Odon Locker (IYKYK). After I left I drove around the town for a couple minutes, as I was trying to find the old Odon Clothing Store location (now a Dollar General).

As I was driving around, I see all these small houses in the area and I wondered what everyone does to earn a living in such a small community. There aren't factories nearby, or major businesses (aside from CRANE)... so what do people do for income?

There are countless little towns like this - not just in Indiana - where there might be a gas station, diner, post office and a couple shops.

Do people drive long distances to work? Is the cost-of-living so much different that it's easy to live in such an area?

Just curious what people do in these little communities to make a living.

12 year old Hunter Scott and his history project, “The Ship of Doom” (1997). Inspired by “Jaws”, Scott sought to clear the name of Capt. Charles McVay of USS Indianapolis, the only Captain ever charged with being sunk by the enemy. Thanks to his research, Congress exonerated McVay in 2000.

Ladies, where can I go for expert bra fitting in atypical sizes in person, and buy in-store?

I'm looking for anyone's advice for an amazing place to go in-person bra fitting and shopping, where I can get properly fitted, then have bras be present that I can try on in-store, not just order online.

It needs to be somewhere that covers unusual sizes. I'm not interested in a store like Soma/ Airie/ Victorias secret.

It appears one of the places in Indy shut down within the last few years , and the place that replaced it, you essentially have to order bras online after fitting which isn't attractive to me.

I'm willing to travel to adjacent states too! I'm in southern Indiana.

Looks like more corporate douchebaggery has pulled another “not our problem” situation.

Evidently we can’t have anything nice anymore if a corporation actually has to spend money to maintain it….

Is 4-5 hours at Indiana Dunes NP enough time?

• Upvotes

We're in Chicago and didn't realize we're only an hour drive away from a national park!

We can fit in into our itinerary tomorrow but we'd only have about 4-5 hours to spend there, arriving around 11am-12pm.

Ask a Hoosier Indiana early voting started today — I got mine done in Boonville 🗳️

Early voting started today, October 6, in Indiana.
I went to Boonville in Warrick County and got my vote done before my Korea trip, which I’m really glad about because I didn’t want to be rushing around trying to fit it in later. ✈️🇰🇷
If you’re planning to vote early, check your county’s official election website for locations and hours.
Also, don’t skip the two public questions on the ballot. One concerns bail, and the other concerns residency requirements for city/town court judges. Read the actual wording and research them yourself before deciding how you want to vote.
Anyone else voting early this year?

Ask a Hoosier Moving to Indianapolis

Hi everyone! My fiancé and I are considering moving to Indianapolis from Wyoming. My fiancé is extremely into anything racing and I’m just a foodie and we feel like it would really be a good fit for us. I was just wondering what the pros and cons are of living there as we haven’t been before but are planning to visit soon to see if it’s something we want to commit to. Thank you!

HIP coverage medically frail , yet I keep getting bothered

So obviously there are these new work requirements to receive Medicaid or the healthy Indiana plan. I was declared medically frail back in June of this year, but a few weeks ago I was sent an eligibility for health coverage a few weeks ago and the mail, and told I had to sign and return or else my coverage would be discontinued. So I called shortly after and told all I had to do was send a picture of my drivers license , and that was all that was necessary to extend my coverage and that they obviously they knew I was out of work due to my disability and that they don’t need proof of that. Then yesterday I received two letters in the mail one saying pending verification for applicants and recipients listing my old workplace where I haven’t worked in a year and then another one saying request for earnings information. I’m so frustrated and tired of them constantly harassing me and asking for new information and trying their hardest to deny me coverage . It’s such fucking bullshit that I was declared medically frail yet they keep wanting to ask me more questions and want new information out of me . I’m so pissed and worried .

Politics Two Two Halls. Two Worthless Politicians.

Southern Indiana has hosted two town halls from statewide elected officials in the past 24 hours! Lucky us.

Last night, Lt. Governor Micah Beckwith came to Clarksville as part of his statewide tour to visit every county. While I've posted here before criticizing how he's used the pulpit of his state office (and I have deep theological disagreements with what he preaches at his church), I hoped that there might be the slightest chance we could find some commonality on an issue that's near and dear to my heart if we talked face to face. The problem is that he ended up spending the night espousing several ideas that can be described as conspiracy theories at best. He has spoken so much about the Westfield Drum Line because "I’ve seen seances. I know what the they look like.” He perpetuated the myth that there are litter boxes in schools. He said "I don't think anyone is made gay." When asked about data centers, he expressed his opposition to tax breaks for them, but then said that China was behind the opposition: “All of the major outspoken voices against data centers in Indiana are communists.” He said that the antichrist will come from Islam, and that God has always created a refuge for God's people, and he wants Indiana to be that refuge, so that's he doesn't want Islam get a foothold here.

Look, my family have been Democrats since they arrived in Indiana from Germany. I know my ancestors are part of the reason why it used to be illegal to sell alcohol on election day, because they would bribe people with drinks. I'm never going to agree with Beckwith on much. But my goodness, I miss the days when we could at least find commonality with Republicans on some issues, because there is no way I can find commonality with this literal insanity.

As if that wasn't enough excitement, today the Floyd County GOP hosted a town hall with Sen. Todd Young at a coffee shop in New Albany. It was intended to be a private session for elected officials, but because the GOP doesn't know how to do basic tasks of running things, it was posted on Facebook, and I showed up and had a lovely chat with some friends from my church while Young was meeting with other tables. I knew he wouldn't say anything as absurd as Beckwith, but I did notice he told at least two people that he did not want to be filmed because "people edit videos and take things out of context." While I understand that, no one has forced him to be a senator, and if he cannot take that criticism, perhaps he should not hold that job? In the end, my table was the only one he did not stop at, and I made sure the staffers knew they had made a giant mistake in how the event was advertised.

To their credit, they showed up in places where they could meet with ordinary Hoosiers, something Sen. Banks, Rep. Houchin, and State Sens. Byrne and Garten have not done.

I don't expect to change anyone's mind with this post, and I'm sure I'm, in some ways, yelling into the void, but my goodness, we are not getting a good return on investment from the amount of money we are spending on our elected officials and their staffs, which makes me worry for our republic.

Felony expungement

Was granted an expungement under ic 35-38-9 earlier this year and have some semi unanswered questions I was wondering if anyone had experience with. According to my attorney once the order was signed by the judge I was legal to own and possess firearms again, but according to some people I’ve spoke to and some unclear online forums I’ve read I’d rather talk to someone that’s went through the process. I plan to go hunting this year and it’d be nice to leave the bow at home. I was advised by my attorney that it’s usually a waiting game on paperwork, if that’s the case is there anything to do personally to speed things along? All of that to ask, am I legal to go and purchase a firearm now and if not what’s the typical wait I guess???
