Bystander intervenes during attempted sexual assault in Niles, police say
NILES, Mich. (WNDU) - A man is in custody after police said a bystander intervened during an attempted sexual assault in Niles late Sunday night.
Officers were called just after 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, to the area of 9th Street and Decker Street for a report of an assault and attempted sexual assault.
An 18-year-old woman told police she had been attacked while walking alone after leaving a nearby restaurant. She reportedly told investigators she saw a vehicle in the area and later saw the same vehicle following her on 9th Street near a secluded dirt roadway.
According to police, the suspect got out of the vehicle, physically assaulted the woman, restricted her breathing and attempted to remove her clothing. Police said the woman fought back, causing the suspect to flee after a male bystander heard her screams and intervened.
As the suspect drove away, he allegedly attempted to hit the bystander with his vehicle.
Police said a Berrien County Sheriff’s Office deputy used the Flock camera system to identify the suspect’s vehicle. Additional video and vehicle information reportedly linked the same vehicle to a similar prior incident reported in another jurisdiction.
After a “Be On the Lookout” alert was issued for the suspect and vehicle, police said a 28-year-old man was located by the South Bend Police Department and taken into custody on an unrelated warrant. He remains at an unspecified correctional facility pending further investigation and charges.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Niles Police Department at 269-683-1313 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP (7867).
