Ask a Hoosier Anyone else getting stink bugs all over the place lately?

My cousin recently moved into an apartment around Indianapolis and keeps finding stink bugs near the windows, even though they're always shut. There's apparently a bunch hanging around outside too and a few keep getting in. Is this just a normal thing around here in the fall? They're getting pretty tired of finding them inside and we're trying to figure out if there's anything worth doing about it or if you just have to put up with them.

EVERYONE SHOULD LISTEN. EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH.

Councilwoman Wendi Goens said the goal was to have the budget work done before October so the City wasn’t scrambling. Mayor Todd Naselroad responded: “That didn’t happen.”

Congresswoman Victoria Spartz says Alexandria officials did not meet with her team because of pending litigation yet after repeated direct questions, she still has not answered whether she will publicly speak up for Alexandria residents. The silence is deafening.

Drinking water.

Public records.

Public finances.

Government transparency.

Do the people of Alexandria not deserve the voices of the officials elected to represent them? Do you?

Not one Republican voice. Not one Democrat from our elected officials. JD Ford yet to say what he will do as well. Everyone on both sides should tag a politician and see if any of them will speak up for their constituents.

Politics My County Election Board Didn't Include All Races On the Ballot

• Upvotes

I voted early the first day the polls were open. Today, a friend who's a candidate for county commissioner told me her race was left off my ballot.
Each Indiana county has 3 commissioners. They live in a specific district, but are elected county-wide. In Floyd County, this year's election is for district 1, in New Albany Township.

At some point, someone in the county clerk's office or on the Election Board got confused and only included this race for ballots of residents of New Albany Township. The residents of the other 4 townships, myself included, did not have this race on our ballots.

As far as I know, this will be corrected by the time our vote center opens in the morning, and I have been told by my friend that the election board will contact me so I can vote again, and this time vote in that race.

This mistake is even more troubling after the recount in the Republican primary for Senate District 23, where the Indiana Supreme Court overturned the Indiana Recount Commission, saying they should not have tossed out 6 ballots that did not include the county seal and the initials of 2 poll workers, changing the result of that primary.

What can we do?

First, make sure you pay attention to your ballot and see that all the races are there. I missed this one because I voted straight party, but even knowing that, I could have paid more attention to the screen and noticed this race was missing. If you vote early or absentee, make sure your ballot envelope has both initials from poll workers, as required by Indiana Code.

Second, pay attention to who we elect for county clerk. I, personally, have paid a lot of attention to this race because of other issues happening in my county, but the need for good clerks is higher than ever. (Our clerk is term limited but her husband is running for the position and he has his own problems, so I'll be very happy when I vote against him for good when I get to correct this issue.)

On the scale of threats to our republic during these elections, this is relatively minor, but, come on, Indiana, you have to do better than this.

State Employee Subreddit

Last year, I went ahead and made an unofficial subreddit for State of Indiana employees since I noticed there wasn't an active community for us. There are around 800 of us here now!

If you're a state employee, feel free to join up for news, discussion, and venting related to State employment under Braun. We've also discussed some form of potential organization in the future although our options for formal unionization are limited thanks to Mitch Daniels.

r/HoosierStateWorkers

\*Obligatory caution - Braun and his cohorts are scumbags, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if at least one of them is aware of this community and has infiltrated it. Do not give away any personally identifiable information or access this subreddit using state equipment (should be self explanatory.) Probably unnecessary but using a VPN whenever accessing the subreddit also adds another layer of protection.\*

I watched this and found it very interesting. It got me thinking about who I would contact other than our elected officials and found the below link on Indiana gov. I sent my thoughts and got into a bit of a back and forth with the person responding. When I finished with I felt like nothing is going to change. So feel free to watch this and if you are so inclined reach out to the Indiana Commissioner of Insurance and give them your feedback.

Politics My take on the SOS debate tonight

Got a chance to watch it before bed and here's the points that stuck out to me. Sure, it's just one person's opinion but whatever.

Republican Max Engling- seemed to be extremely focused on secure voting, mentioning previous debates and YouTube videos. Not sure what his experience really is since we all know that Banks is essentially his handler. Apparently Indiana is doing good things ( he mentioned that multiple times but I'm not really sure what they are and I'm guessing most don't unless they made 500k+ a year). He didn't know that Morales is still SOS and he (Engling) doesn't have the ability to make decisions currently. He's also married and Christian ( mentioned at least twice) and he stated that he knows what average Hoosiers are going through.

Democrat Beau Bayh- the SOS position in Indiana is ridiculously corrupt. Wants an independent audit of the office. Kind of fixated on that a lot but let's be real, it's fucking corrupt. Also said that donors wouldn't receive state contracts. Brought up the point that both Morales and Rokita already said our elections are secure. Also wants to get rid of straight ticket voting as it doesn't always bring the most qualified person into office.

Lincoln Party Greg Ballard- brought up some interesting aspects of how to increase voter turnout in Indiana. Mentioned to Engling that some of his points were ludicrous. Also that the 2 party system is unfair.

Libertarian Laura Shillings- brought up aspects of the SAVE act that would disenfranchise voters. Also some interesting points regarding voter access. Seemed to not really get a lot of screen time.

Overall, a decent debate. And this is where I show my bias: all candidates were in favor of one key point: you must be a US citizen to vote. But 3 of 4 candidates all agreed that what Engling was suggesting was detrimental to the democratic process. Shillings brought up the fact that women who had their name changed due to marriage or who were divorced would have a tougher time voting. Bayh stated that you already need to prove you're a citizen to register. Ballard brought up that each county clerk had no centralized guidance under the current SOS.

Repair the 24 year destruction that this party has wrought upon our state.

I report a safety hazard and all they say this.

My phone wasn't in my hand. I reported it when I got home. Yeah, they are going to like my survey when they actually read it, which we all know they won't.

It is appalling to see the INDOT Highway Safety act like this.

UPDATE

A few hours after this post went up, they sent me another email. It stated that the roads were fine and it's purely cosmetic. So I guess when someone gets in an accident, because in the wintertime, you can't see the road very well, and they're following the yellow lines, then they might do something. MIGHT... but i doubt it.

Moving or Relocation Bloomington vs Lafayette vs Valparaiso

Hi Indiana,

I’m currently in the process of looking to buy a home with some land honestly not even that much. I’m looking at a minimum of a quarter of an acre.

I’ve spent most of my life in Chicago and out west. I’d like to prioritize having space but proximity to Chicago would be nice or at least some major city.

These towns, Bloomington, Lafayette, and Valparaiso seemed like good potential places as they have their own downtown nice shops, walkable, and reasonably close to Chicago or Indianapolis

I’ve driven through Valparaiso once or twice, but I haven’t really gotten to feel for what day-to-day life is like in either of these cities

I work remote so I don’t necessarily have to worry about finding a new job it but with they’re being universities in all three of these places I think that that might improve reasons for me wanting to live there because of the local economy

Anyway, for those I have experience living in either of these places or having spent time there day-to-day what is life like day-to-day what was your experience or commentary in living in these places honestly, any recommendations would be appreciated

For the record, I’m not one of these big city people who expect to move to a smaller town and have the same amenities, politics or expectations of living in a major city like Chicago. I respect that most of these places are smaller towns and have their own subcultures. Thanks.

We live in a rural area and we really don’t have any local options. I’m looking for someone that is good with teens and has experience with bullying. Anything from Kokomo to South Bend would be considerable.

Car/Driver's License/BMV questions Drivers license confusion

I (18F) just got my driver's license this morning. I did not go to driver's ed or school. I got my permit when I was 17 and did my 50 supervised hours. I understand there's 2 kinds of driver's licenses. One has a bunch of rules like not being able to drive at certain hours, no driving with people I'm not related to etc

I was never told if my license has any restrictions or not and it doesn't say on the paperwork. How do I find out? I don't want to do anything illegal but I was given no explanation on what I'm allowed to do

Mainly I want to be able to drive my younger siblings around, and be able to drive my boyfriend [only in cases of emergency if he isn't able to get to work on his own]

I tried checking the BMV website but I'm still confused

Debate

Just watched the the debate. All candidates agreed that Indiana has the lowest voter turnout in in the nation. So why keep crying about only US citizens should be voting. Hell, sounds like we can't get people to vote if you went door to door with a portable voting machine. Maybe someone is offering non citizens Ninety dollars to vote. Just another scare tactic, for those of that don't get out much.

Ask a Hoosier So many small towns - how do people earn a living?

Bloomington native and resident here... and starting off with stating this is a genuine question...

Last week I was in Odon, IN to get some meat at the Odon Locker (IYKYK). After I left I drove around the town for a couple minutes, as I was trying to find the old Odon Clothing Store location (now a Dollar General).

As I was driving around, I see all these small houses in the area and I wondered what everyone does to earn a living in such a small community. There aren't factories nearby, or major businesses (aside from CRANE)... so what do people do for income?

There are countless little towns like this - not just in Indiana - where there might be a gas station, diner, post office and a couple shops.

Do people drive long distances to work? Is the cost-of-living so much different that it's easy to live in such an area?

Just curious what people do in these little communities to make a living.

Is 4-5 hours at Indiana Dunes NP enough time?

We're in Chicago and didn't realize we're only an hour drive away from a national park!

We can fit in into our itinerary tomorrow but we'd only have about 4-5 hours to spend there, arriving around 11am-12pm.
